Great video! I live in a place called Ballarat in Victoria, Australia - and we have a huge mural as you enter the city saying "Welcome to Ballarat, home of Mars" so I always just assumed it originated here. Now im just assuming its because we have one of their biggest processing plants located here..? Any further info would be fantastic. Ive heard more than one local around here proudly claim Mars was born in Ballarat, hope they dont mind being disappointed!
Because we trust everything Simon says as gospel, yeah? Yeahh??

Quite interesting for me that this showed up in my recommended videos...
My late but very great-uncle was the engineer behind the automation of the production of Mars Bars. Before he devised the process they were made by hand. Uncle Jack was an insanely fascinating fellow who had survived a V1 attack in WW2 and married a Wren who worked in one of the Bletchley satellites. Post-war he drove an MG far too quickly around Berkshire and used to head to Silverstone with my grandfather (his brother-in-law) to watch motor racing. In the process he witnessed Fangio do the first 100mph lap of Silverstone and also saw a man tumble into the open latrines that used to be a feature of 1950s motorsport...
His engineering prowess showed in everything he did... My uncle told me about him using a theodolite to lay a patio, and carrying out full structural calcs on a straightforward lintel. In retirement he built clocks using a lathe that he offered me (and every day I regret not accepting that offer).
The full compliment of marbles was maintained right until his very end and he was a very lovely man who anybody would get along with.

Possibly as the Mars Family asked WB's Berkshire Hatherway for a $20B loan (correct me if i'm wrong) to buy out Wrigley, so I think somebody left in the picture by mistake. Remember also that one of the brothers, I think it's John, has since died and passed his 1/3rd onto his kids. Anyway, apart from that mistake, very little is known about the family, so much of what one reads will be 'fake news' as the man with the shredded wheat haircut drums on about.

I know I'm 4 years late but what a great video. My dad worked for Mars in Slough and also travelled to Europe and the US doing R n D. He even had Patients to his name regarding cooling chocolate amongst other things. Seeing the black and white photo of the guy in his whites standing next to one of the lines bought back so fond memories of seeing dad in his whites and hat. He managed to shut the Twix line down by mistake once but I can't remember the full story.
It was great growing up with a cupboard full of Mars goodies and some some from Europe and the States that we don't have in the UK.
I got to tour the Factory at least 3 times. Eating fresh Twix biscuit directly off the line while it's still warm is amazing. If they retain that taste even when it has cooled, Twix would be even better than they are.
I also had a hand in the final flavour of Mars Milk as dad bought home 9 samples for me to try. I'm 99% sure what we taste today was my favourite.
    Thank you for this video.

I thoroughly enjoy the production value and information your channel produces. Could you gentlemen please construct a video that answers this question which has bugged me for at least 15 years? Why is it that members of the British military exclusively pronounce the word Lieutenant as " Left-tenant" and yet continue to spell the rank with conventional French spelling? Unlike other English speaking countries which use the original French pronunciation. Do they also say "Left-tenant Colonel" or "Left-tenant General" ? Does it have anything to do with avoiding the British colloquialism for bathroom, i.e. the Loo? -Merci beaucoup

I was interested so did a little research. It seems there are many theories, one is that way back in the English language the letters U and V were basically the same and the lack of standardised spelling and pronunciation with U and V could have played a part. Also in old french, lieu was spelled luef. Another is that's french and we tended to anglicised words that could be mistaken as french. Another is that traditionally in the military lower ranked officers would walk on the left side of senior officers. Another simply being as a way for America to distance it's self from the U.K after the revolution. Hope this helps with your curiosity, but I don't think there is a specific answer. Language changes :p

I'm sure they're doing the same thing everybody else is doing, putting corn syrup in place of the sugar. Which makes them taste like crap and gives them a different texture. But they save money doing it that way, so... you're never going to convince them to do otherwise. Unless, of course, you could convince them that they'll sell more of the things if actually use SUGAR, instead of that corn syrup crap. Good luck doing that...

WRONG. Reese bought the rights to make Kit Kats in the United States from Rountree's of York creator of the Kit Kat bar. Reese is owned by Hershey. After this deal was struck, Nestle bought Rountree. Hershey does not own Nestle, Neslte does not own Hershey. Hershey continues to make Kit Kats under the previous licensing agreement they made with Roundtree. So now all Kit Kat bars are made by Nestle exept in the United States (where they are made by Hershy thier competitor).

And with large amounts I mean large amounts compared to that price tags. The rise in cocoa beans prices becomes less important when your product is anyway already fair trade or organic and expensive even without consideration of the cocoa prices.

At 7:09, or so, I heard Simon say "John Forrest Jr., and Jacqueline". I did some reading about it and discovered that he really WAS saying all three kid's names, "John, Forrest Jr., and Jacqueline". But it was very confusing for a bit, because of the way he said their names.
Hearing that fast talking, I was thinking maybe I should post an idiotic youtube comment saying that Simon mentioned the two men and didn't say anything the daughter. I listened to it again, then wondered why he was talking about one of the sons and the daughter, but not the other son. Then I started comparing names and reading about their family, and finally figured it all out.
But in the future, Simon, when you're narrating a script, keep this in mind... at 7:09 you literally said "John Forrest Jr. and...", even though now I know you meant "John, Forrest Jr., and..."
I understand that you're trying to do this quickly, and you enunciate your words quite well (a rarity on the youtubes). But perhaps, in a case like this, it MAY be better if you had written the script to say, "John, and Forrest Jr., and Jacqueline." I think adding the extra "and" in there would have made what you were saying much clearer to the casual viewer of your video - and would have prevented the initial confusion I had when hearing you list their names.
That being said... it's a minor little thing, and I wasn't terribly concerned about it overall. I still thought I should mention it to you, for the sake of future scripts, but it was only a tiny detail in an otherwise engaging video.
The videos you make are quite interesting and informative, and I do appreciate the efforts you go to in order to make your videos worth watching. So, thank you for those efforts - and I will be subscribing to your channel now, whereas over the past couple of weeks I've only been looking at your videos every now and then. It's actually quite interesting, many armies did this, and some (Germany for example) gave their soldiers chockolate with amphetamine (look up Panzerschokolade ) and some pills with other drugs to keep them fighting "better" (and have less moral qualms I guess). Great Brittain also gave their pilots amphetamine-based stuff.

They also own Domio. The easiest way to check who owns a brand is to a) look for company label e.g. Nestle around the back or b) look for company/factory address as that will have the parent company's name on it.
Most brands seem to be owned by a limited amount of companies for example Bertolli (margarine), Flora (margarine), Cornetto (icecream) and Magnum (icecream) are all owned by Unilever.

Here's another fun fact. Because Mars bars (or Milky Way as they are called in the US) are found in every country in the world, they are used by financial institutions to calculate the cost of living in those countries. They are one of a shopping list of goods which they add up to find a total cost of a weekly shop. They look at the retail price and the weight of the bar. The bar's weight is an indicator of how much the manufacturer is having to pay for raw ingredients like sugar, and it varies in order to maintain a steady profit while keeping the price of the mars bar stable.

You are missing some facts!! After attending the world's fair expo in new York he bought what was THE first candy making machine from a German engineer at the expo. He quickly patented the machine with the US patent office. This machine along with it's patent completely industrialized the food making industry! Like Henry Fords patent for the assembly line... He had patented something nobody else had ever done. Companies from all over the country sought after him to design food making machines... They had too..

The way to know if it's chocolate or if it's a candy is to read the packaging. If it doesn't explicitely say it's chocolate , then it's a candy. Be aware they will write things like "chocolate flavoured bar/candy" and in the ingredient list it will explicitely say : chocolate XX%
In the case of Mars, it's not chocolate , it's a chocolate flavoured nougat and caramel candy bar.

Mr MC I'm a pastry chef , there's international conventions to distinguish chocolate from candy. Chocolate must have certain %s of chocolate , sugar and chocolate butter . If those %s are not respected , it is called candy. For an example , white chocolate is actually candy, because it's basically only sugar and chocolate butter , so is brown cover ( the chocolate enrobage on a mars bar) , white cover , lettering oil , etc.

I was in the candy business as a 3rd generation candy broker and manufacturers representative in Maryland, USA, selling to wholesalers, chain drug stores , chain supermarkets, and vending machine opperators. Now many of the companies I worked for make their iconic candies in Mexico and are part of corporate conglomerates instead of family owned. Some of the products have been reduced in quality so that they do not even resemble the products I sold from 1972 to 1997. It is sad to see good products cheapened to a shadow of their former selves to achieve higher profits and golden parachutes for CEOs.
