    In this video:
    An expensive meal at a fancy restaurant, a declaration of romance, and a big, fat diamond ring- this is a pretty standard formula for an engagement proposal. After all, it has been ingrained in all of us that a diamond ring equals love and the bigger the diamond, the more love there must be. Well, believe it or not, diamonds really aren’t all that rare. In fact, the reason diamonds cost so much is more due to savvy (and sometimes unethical) business practices and incredibly successful advertising campaigns than the actual inherent value of the stone based on supply and demand, something anyone who has actually tried to sell a diamond quickly comes to realize. Here now is the story of how and why we all fell in love with diamonds.

    Interesting diamond story: Kimberlite, a type of rock usually sitting on top of diamond deposits, was found in northern Canada. De Beers rushed agents to Canada to secure the rights to the land where the Kimberlite was found. However, a Canadian company purchased the rights to land situated to the north of the find. This is because glaciation, something that doesn't happen in South Africa, would have pushed the Kimberlite to the south of its original location. De Beers, digging straight down, found no diamonds but the Canadian company did.

      You forget the MASSIVE impact it has had on tooling. Everything you use, including your food and water, can be traced back to a diamond saw in some way or another. Without diamonds, many products we use would be far too expensive (or of a much lower quality) for most consumers. And that is just one commercial use for them.

      Small diamonds in the rough for industrial applications are far cheaper though. Actually working the diamond into a regular shape adds to its value tremendously, and the price goes up exponentially with the size, ie a dozen very small diamonds cost far less than a single large one with the same total carat. Which is why diamonds are used in power tools and they're not that expensive.

    My mother worked for a jeweler about twenty years ago, and to this day will still try to discredit man-made stones as somehow being fake or deceptive. In trying to convince customers that the more expensive natural diamonds were somehow preferable, she convinced herself too. I'm surprised more commenters aren't mentioning moissanite as an alternative to traditional diamonds. It's a pretty fascinating stone, with a cool history -- not to mention it's superior to a diamond in almost every way, for a fraction of the cost. For anyone looking for an engagement ring or other sparkly gift, look for moissanite jewelry. It's been around for quite a while, but most jewelers like Jared's or Kay don't carry it, because it competes with the much more profitable diamond. Etsy sellers and independent jewelers are a much better bet for quality moissanite jewelry. Plus, it's always nice to buy something from an independent craftsman than a massive corporation.

      Well, they cost a lot to buy "new" (obviously they are bloody old) but cost and intrinsic value are two very different things (just look at Number Plates on cars).
      Diamonds do have a value, they can be used in industry, for example, and they are nice to look at, but not £30 million worth of nice, as in the case of a blue diamond.

    • @johncrafton8319
      @johncrafton8319 6 лет назад +1

      Value has two components: What it's worth to the buyer, and what it's worth to the seller. If you, as the buyer, believe a specific diamond to be worth a certain amount, you're partially correct. The seller also has to agree to that number.
      The moment you decide that any given thing is worth less than the asking price, than - in your case -that thing is without value to you. If enough people feel that way, the demand for that thing will drop. When demand drops, so does the market value.
      Since demand for diamonds is steady, they have a much higher value than you may specifically be willing to pay. As such, they're worth a LOT to those that own the market as well as to consumers willing to buy them. To you, they're worth shit.
      And yes, if you try to resell a diamond, you'll find that there's a big difference between the value of a "new" diamond from a diamond retailer and a "used" diamond from an individual reseller. Why? Because DeBeers convinced the market that only "new" diamonds have value. They did this by connecting a diamond purchase with perceived "love".
      Personally, to you and I and many others here, a diamond is worth less than shit. To the market, it's worth far more. This is what happens when a monopoly is able to control the supply of what would otherwise be a commodity.

    Thirty-one years ago, my then wife won a diamond ring at a department store jewelers. The ring retailed for $500. Maybe a year later, we had it appraised. The new jeweler said it was worthless, but he'd buy the band itself for $10 (and remove the diamonds and give them to us.) This started a conversation where he explained in detail why the diamonds in the ring were worthless and used a microscope as part of his "lecture." It was interesting.

    This might be difficult to believe for some people but when I offered my wife to buy her a diamond ring she answered with what is said in this video.
    One more proof, if you check the stock markets you'll see Gold, Silver, Platinum, and other minerals but no Diamonds.

      wishbone346 that's not why. There are other reasons. You are just hiding behind this excuse. If I had to guess I would think you are cheap. Or perhaps you don't feel like any woman is worth getting it for. Although a diamond does not show love itself, the fact that you would go out and spend the money on it because it means so much to her despite the fact that you think it's a rip off is what shows the love and that you are willing to go along with social norms even though you don't believe in them and are willing to fulfill her dreams is what shows the love. Maybe one day you will meet a woman so fabulous that you would make the sacrifice. I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do.

    • @wishbone346
      @wishbone346 7 лет назад +178

      Katie Kat Lol you know nothing about me, sweet heart, so don't go making assumptions. I'd buy someone I love a ring, just not a diamond that is worthless and represents everything wrong with capitalism. Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, or even just pure gold are all far more valuable, and I'd have no problem buying them.
      What's more if a woman is dumb enough to "dream" of getting a diamond and refuses to change her mind even after seeing how worthless they are then she can hit the bricks. I've got no interest in someone that superficial. Hell, if she measures love based on any gift I give her she's not worth my time. I'll give someone a gift because I love them, not because they expect it based on social "norms."
      "I don't think its a sacrifice but I get the feeling you guys do." How do you know I or anyone else here feels that way? You're making sexist assumptions and lumping all men together as if we're all just dimwitted neanderthals.

    Try selling it back to the seller, if you lost your receipts, records of authentication and proofs ... you're diamond is worth nothing.

    Diamonds can be produced in a laboratory with complete perfection and indistinguishable from natural diamonds for relatively low cost. I have always hated the idea of wearing a big diamond ring. Just for all of the ethical and practical reasons available. My now husband was more than happy to comply. When we got married, I got a beautiful ring with an aquamarine center surrounded by white sapphires. It is simple, attractive, and it cost us next to nothing. I just wish more couples were comfortable taking the more practical approach to engagement. Seriously, save the money because nobody is going to notice or care what your ring looks like.

    • @Namron9797
      @Namron9797 5 лет назад +1

      Not true. White sapphires don't refract light even a fraction of what diamond does. It looks like garbage (sorry to dis your ring). Also, aquamarines are not great for daily wear. A diamond can look the same for another million years. Your stone won't last 20 years and still look the same as when you bought it.
      You are correct that no one else cares what your ring looks like. Unless you work in certain fields or with high salary clients.

    • @hyperhektor7733
      @hyperhektor7733 5 лет назад +5

      haha sell your diamons elsewhere, you choose the wrong place here xD
      we all know Moissianite is the better Diamond and Zirconia(CZ) is also an option, they are 100x/1000x cheaper and the fire is even better. If you have money to burn you have too much, there are always better things to invest in.
      Its totally unreasonable to bring up 1 million years since a human can only wear a diamond max 100 years. Maybe 200 if the daughter is willing to wear Grandmas ring (usually not xD) (sorry to dis your micro diamonds)

    I never wanted a diamond for many reasons. When my hubs proposed to me he gave me a very cute man made emerald ring. The reaction from quite a few women was shocking, like I had been cheated out of a big diamond I never wanted. Reactions are pretty different since I switched to the huge Russian alexandrite ring I inherited from my Mom. I did wind up with man made diamonds on my wedding bands because it was hard to find a band that worked around a large stone. I love the continuity of wearing the ring my Mom wore everyday and that it's unique.

    According to Neal Degrasse Tyson, the technology to synthetically create diamonds in minutes exists now. They even have better clarity than the natural ones. I wonder if they are available on the market and if they cost less.

    • @shadenox8164
      @shadenox8164 7 лет назад +3

      Also yes, synthetic diamonds are cheaper.

    • @modestoca25
      @modestoca25 7 лет назад

      OF course, synthetic diamonds ( as well as other gemstones) have been around for awhile now, they're better quality and they have to add a florescent chemical to them so they glow in UV light to distinguish them from the real thing. Diamonds are made in volcanoes and there are volcanoes all over.....even on other planets, so they are quite common.

    • @dlevi67
      @dlevi67 7 лет назад +16

      There is no fluorescent chemical added to synthetic diamonds, nor is it true that natural diamonds have no fluorescence (about 20% do), or that they are "made in volcanoes". It is however true that at the current state of things, one of the safest ways of telling synthetic from natural diamond is through UV spectroscopy.

    When my Mum died in 2014 we had her 1ct. Canadian mined diamond ring appraised for estate purposes. My dad paid over $10,000 for that ring when he bought it. It's kinda a romantic story, when they were young he could only afford a cheap diamond ring. He wanted to surprise Mum with a big diamond for their 30th anniversary. Every month he secretly went to the jewellery store and made a payment. It took him two years to pay for it. He missed the 30th anniversary but gave it to her on Christmas day (her birthday) She loved it. A few years after she developed cancer. Any way, we were shocked to find out it only had a resale value of $2000 AT BEST! Most of that value was in the platinum setting. We never intended on selling it. We never told my Dad about the appraisal either. He now wears that ring on a chain around his neck as a symbol of his love for our Mum. In that sense it's priceless!
