Miriam Feuersinger with the "Echo" aria is Amazing, I have never heard an echo aria like that before by J.S Bach. And Tenor aria definitely has an oriental vibe! Bach was this guy who always tried new things, global not old Leipzig church composer: Italian, French, eastern etc. Absorbed knowledge, culture and synthesized his own original genre. What an original person! Just imagine if he had İnternet like nowadays we all have, just imagine what he could have created.
This is aria is from Bach's secular cantata "Hercules at the Crossroads" , another wonderful example of Bach reusing his other works. Don't know which came first though. The tenor aria has a vibe reminiscent of Bach's Double Violin Concerto.
Echo arias were a feature of Italian opera in Bach's time. On his visits to Dresden, the opera capital of Germany at the time, he attended the Dresden opera. German church music of Bach's time was heavily influenced by opera. A sophisticated listener of Bach's time would have recognized many operatic devices in Bach's Leipzig cantatas and Passion music. I don't hear anything even remotely "oriental" in the tenor aria "Ich will nur dir zu ehren leben" ("I will only you to honor live"). This is a parody of the aria "Auf meinen Flügeln sollst du schweben" ("Upon my wings shall you soar") from the secular cantata "Hercules at the Crossroads," BWV 213. The melisma on "leben" ("live") in the parody sounds more appropriate on "schweben" ("soar") in the original, where Virtue entreats Hercules to soar upon his wings "to the stars like an eagle."
@@js1757 Hercules at the Crossroads, BWV 213, was composed for the 11th birthday of Crown Prince Friedrich Christian of Saxony and first performed September 5, 1733, in Leipzig at Zimmermann's coffeehouse or at the University church, I'm not sure which. The parody BWV 248/IV was adapted from BWV 213 for the Xmas season of 1734.
@@herrickinman9303 On the part that you mentioned, exactly, I noticed the theme used in many folk songs in eastern european and ottoman palace music. The oriental songs I referred to was actually the amalgamation of Byzantine, Persian, Greek songs, taken by Ottoman Empire and transferred to Europe in 17th-18th century. Also the spanish music contained those archaic Arabic themes. Melisma is something we are used to hear in those music when singing, its full of them, I thought a little and this came to my mind: For example "Uskudara Giderken" is an old folk song, compiled by Dimitri Cantemir in early 1700s. ruclips.net/video/QKd5Lix8hGo/видео.html is a joyeous song which is about a journey, and bach used a theme just like the theme of this song, transposed to Dminor and at the end of the theme after melisma he didn't use cadance like the original folk song but added polyphony and continued the theme to an extended cadance. In his music theme continues goes up so He used it to glorification of God. I played it on the piano very similar.
@@lordchameleon2650 I'm not familiar with the oriental songs you allude to. But I do know that the fugue subject in this aria follows the pattern of many fugue subjects: a leap followed by a more or less stepwise progress in more or less the opposite direction of the leap to the dominant or tonic. Neither the melodies nor the harmonies in the aria sound even remotely oriental or Arabic to me. This music is constructed on Western principles of melody, counterpoint and harmony. The 8ve leap down in the subject of the aria corresponds to Hercules mounting Virtue's wings. The stepwise ascent that follows corresponds to him rising up on Virtue's wings "to soar like an eagle to the stars." There's a 2-1/2 measure melisma on "soar" ("schweben"). Schweben could also mean "hover," but I think "soar" fits the context better.
Marvellous as ever! The echo effect in the soprano aria is excellent - great respect to the echo soprano and oboist. And of course Miriam Feuersinger is a joy to listen to as well. And this comment is from a horn player - horn duo in the Chorales doing a fine job!

BRAVO BRAVA!!! Maestro Lutz & JS Bach Foundation, endless thanks to you, your magnificent ensemble of singers & instrumentalists....WOW...creme de la creme! Sheer genius! I never fail to be amazed by what you do. Truly the best performances & interpretations of Bach's choral works. I don't think anyone can top what you do. It is impossible to choose one Bach cantata as a favorite, but this one is beyond marvelous & you make it shine, from start to finish! One must single out the talents of Daniel Johannsen & continuo in the brilliant performance of the tenor aria, but the entire cantata was perfection...gorgeous playing & singing one and all! Kudos!
This is just unbelievable.. I have seen and heard a lot of very good Bach-performances. This one beats them all. What a passion, what a perfection, what a drive, what a schwung. Please give me more..!
I've heard over 50 live performances and recordings of the Christmas Oratorio. This offers such beauty and delicacy. Every section-strings, continuo, horns, oboes-is so immaculately balanced. The soloists are splendid, I especially liked the bass whose timbre and attack are so distinctive. Lutz is a true maestro. The lengthy applause is well-deserved.

Everything you could hope for! Special thanks to the horns (I know what it's like!) and the excellent camera-work, especially in the echo aria. This cantata often gets left out in concerts (far too often we just get 1, 2, 3, 6)
Benditos sean Bachstiftung!!!
Delicioso.
A particularly lively and musically sweet segment of the Christmas oratorium. As expected, you can hear segments of previous works (in the case, the echo aria). An excellent video and audio recording. Thanks.

Great performance, but once again no names of the orchestra musicians. This really should change in your videos dear Bach-Stiftung! It gives the impression that you think they are just disposable workers that you don't care whoever they might be.

Where is the performance?
They’ve already banned themselves from hearing good music. No worries.
Totally agree with you - such beautiful, heavenly music!
