    Those early Detroit Diesels LOVED WASTING Oil. The oil made sure nothing rusted. The seals and gaskets leaked badly. The Great improvement was when the 92 series came out. I drove the 6V92 series in the 1980's. It didn't use nearly any oil compared to the 71 series motors.

    Great bus. I was a driver for Greyhound in the 1971 year . First bus ever driven in drivers school. Never will be another one like it. Passenger's waited in terminal just to ride it. I retired after 23 years , but will never forget the experience. This type bus went from Detroit to Miami and was dubbed the chicken bone express. Detroit to Chattanooga to Atlanta to Tampa to Miami. All aboard. Thanks for videos from Ohio

I've worked hard all my life but broke my neck and back in a few different places and it just took everything of life right out of me. Now I'm lucky to have a pot to pee in. I tell you what, if I could have one wish it would be to travel the 🇺🇸 living in my bus and just enjoy getting lost and fishing for my food.. God I need to feel alive again.. Bless you all. That was one thing I loved about running a 13-speed Roadranger or a 5x4 twin-stick because you could easily gear them in a way to keep rpm's high. Unlike today's 4-cycle diesels like my 60 Series which can run down the road 1100-1400 rpm, the old 2-stroke engines needed to stay high rev'd. As for that towing hitch on back bumper, it's got to go. These older buses were never built nor intended for that use and now there is structural failure which needs immediate remediation. The owners of these buses must be reminded that there is no body on frame in this design, the body of the bus is the frame. Otherwise, this is a nice looking coach.

    Lots of memories of riding in a Scenicruiser when I was a kid, more than once when the driver had chained the old girl up and a 6 hour run took 10 or more hours. I love those buses for that reason. I sincerely hope he makes it home safely, but were it mine it would be living at your place until she was right. Most common repower on the old dodge power wagon is a a 5 speed from a 2 1/2 Army truck hooked up to a 3-53 Detroit. It's a tight fit but works very well. 5th gear in the Deuce and a half is overdrive.
    Food for thought.

  • @marlinrowe4841
    @marlinrowe4841 Год назад +6

    Actually, the very first of these scenicruisers, had twin (2) 4-71 Detroit’s. The 8v71’s did not arrive until about 1958. The first 8v-71’s were built as “no water below the ports” ( the lower part of the cylinder had no cooling) those engines are not desirable as they lead to uneven expansion of the cylinder walls. They might have had “2 valve(per cylinder) heads also. Not sure what year they started to build the “water below the ports” engine. If you ever had to pull out the first design, junk it and put in the later version. All the twin 4’s were swapped out (?)as they had a hard time synchronizing the engines and were gut less. If there was still a twin 4 in existence, it would be super rare.
    I think the early 8-71’s with no water below the ports had a different air box “door” kinda like a 6-71 I recall . I remember you could tell by just looking. The rectangular port doors is the correct engine. Hope this helps…Marlin, old Detroit mech.

    Awesome rig, what a neat bus. Definitely don’t tow anything with it though!

    Rode on an "Express" Greyhound,in first passenger seats in raised "scenic"area, alone at 12yrs old in 1962 from San Diego to Amarillo....and yes, the driver got a speeding ticket just east of Flagstaff!! Those guys drove those babies

      Must have been an ass of an officer. Usually they didn't ticket Greyhound drivers because of the respect they had for each other.

    I hate to be that guy.. But for me a lot of my pleasure in your channel is the great audio.. I know it's from an iPhone, but all the mechanical and combustion sounds are so soothing... The electric golf cart? Eh... It sucks. Lol

    Would it be over fueling on the wet cylinder as the rings still looked firm in their grooves as best as i could tell from the video? New shoes and seals. Both sides as if ones leaking the other one wont be far away from doing the same. Those valve clearances are all over the place. Hes lucky he hasnt burned the valves.

    I’d be quite concerned about the ass hanging out of it. Really not designed to have 3+ tons strapped to its rear as the cracks seem to illustrate. Chains and turnbuckles to the bulkhead seem a rather sketchy solution.

      The trailer hitch is the red flag.

      @@skinnerhound2660 I agree. These buses were never designed to tow anything. Especially not a car on a trailer.
