    Is there any difference between this method and duplicating the layer and applying effects and then masking it?

      nope except you end up having less layers and this is way easier to apply to other layers if you need to

      I also imagine that it's easier to render as well. Since you're still just rendering a single layer, and less of the effects.

      Actually, i prefer duplicate one more layer, coz it will be easier to see what you've done by looking at the layers.
