This is great. Also, when I'm lighting, say, text, or whatever. A lot of times I can't even find my light, so I will just copy and paste the position of whatever object I'm trying to light and paste it into the light. From this point, at least I know that my light is exactly where my object is and I can start backing it up, move it around, etc from there. Thanks for the tip!
Very nice idk why but I have a lot of trouble getting the lights exactly where I want them. I can imagine it in my head but it just makes it so hard to get it where I need it. This seems like the perfect solution to that problem

Thank you for this Cameron - works perfectly and sooooo helpful. I create multiple sets of lights./ cams in my projects now with this 'system'. It seems Adobe keeps making After Effects tools harder to decipher and manipulate under the guise of making the 'more powerful'.
This is life changing. Adobe should maybe just make this built in to AE? Really great video and elegant solution. Would another solution to the camera controls moving off screen (requiring the zoom out) problem be to just scrub through values by twirling down on the camera layer and clicking/dragging on say, the z position. Or just trying rational values by typing those in and tweaking them until they are perfect? Then you are not relying on dragging the camera control on the canvas. I am a noob here but hopefully you can answer, thanks.
0:42 when i click ok only the transform circle appears on screen but the actual effecf doesnt get applied to the composition. I can see it in the layer but it has no effect on the composition. Can anybody solve my problem?
Excellent idea - thank you. Any tips on created shapes that don't cast shadows? I've checked the obvious...The "floor" does accept shadows; the light source does cast shadows etc. And, to be clear, my cubes and floor are rendering a beautifully shaded environment as the light moves; IE my cubes have shaded sides which behave as expected, but the cubes do not cast shadows onto the floor etc. Thanks in anticipation :-)
The Cubes are compositions of six squares (as you'd expect). And each of the 6 squares is a composition of a short 2-frame animation...to give each side a subtle retro look. The settings are as follows, using Classic 3D, and with the light's "cast shadows" checked: 1) The animated *squares* are not 3D, and are not required to be. 2) The composite cube which uses the above six squares IS 3D, of course, and set to cast shadows, accept shadows and accept lights. It also has a null which the sides are parented to. 3) Each "top" composite of the resulting cubes is ALSO set as per 2) - not sure if both NEED to be, but I tried one on and one off with no change. I added text to the scene and that doesn't cast shadows either - but IS shaded dependent on the light position. Now, whilst typing I've thought of a possible issue; the cube composite has to have the "rasterized" box checked to be a cube (or it's a flat mess). The "material options" are only visible if this is NOT checked. However, I have three cubes, using the same composition, and a shadow just appeared as I alternate the rasterize button for each one. Trouble is, I need them to be cubes, not flattened. Not sure I fully understand the rasterization aspect. I guess that's my problem! Seems the shadow is affected by which boxes are rasterized. How did your animation achieve shadows of the 3D box, and "X"?
Ah. Me again. OK, so I think I may have narrowed-down the area of the problem (without actually resolving it). I changed my rendering to "fast-draft" and ALL the required shadows appeared - cubes and all - albeit rough and low quality. Switched back to "Off - (final quality)" - gone. Out of curiosity, I rendered the animation whilst fast draft was selected:- The text had shading and shadows; the cubes had shading, but NO shadows. What a puzzle!
why adding light layer shows black screen whtever the color? i changed the light options but it dowsn't appear any thing from the under layers or even the light
Hey dude ur r awesome n ur videos also i thing u need to make tags when u uploading video also use big title m Sure you will get much much Views that u Actully Deserve 😚👍
I still have a black screen whenever I turn off the ambient light. I am shining it on an image backdrop. Can anyone help? This problem is driving me crazy.
Your insight or Lesson on 3D camera techniques took away my literal fear of working with cameras in AE, opening my mind to greater possibilities. I wonder how long it will take other people like me to come across this tutorials. I know I can't be like you because this is a life's years work of practice & experience for you to be able to make explanations like this in almost layman's term this simple for understanding, but I'm eager and look forward to coming to the level that you've been at least. Thank you so much.

This is so simple and obvious but absolutely genius, good show chap.
My saviour. I am familiar with Lightwave where you can view a scene through the light. This simple workaround gives me that. Genius. Thank you.

Cameron!!! This is a freakin sweet solution. Tip of the week? No way...Tip of the YEAR!
Thanks Cutter!
Thank you, this helped so much! I was really stuck trying to light a scene and getting nowhere!

Glad it was helpful!
Gold nuggets right there! Thanks!
Thanks Dan!
why hasn't adobe picked up on this? This is amazing. Thank you
Excellent tip!
This is briilant TIP!
Thanks alot, i have been struggling because the light goes way off the frame to control
Glad it helped!
Thank you!
Very useful.
you are the smartest one in youtube
Great video. It is concise, precise and simple. Thank you!

Great tip!
Joshua Kirby thanks!
cool beans! i can't get my lights to illuminate my subject! i'll have to try this! thanks brother!
Awesome super cool technique.

I agree it would be handy to have this built in.
Another solution to move the camera IS by scrubbing the position values. You are right!
Great short tutorial! Thank You!
Be sure to check out the ProFlows series of 1 minute tutorials on this channel.
Great technique. Thanks!!!
You bet!
Awesome!! super easy!!!
Great stuff!

good and great idea
Awesome Idea....!!!
well thats kind of cool, thanks bro
noti-squad up!
Great tips,...thank you...!!!
You are so welcome!
Can we do the same with the point of interest of the parallel light ?
Sure can!
thank you very much, fluffy
Thank you :)

Are the cubes set to cast shadows?

How did your animation achieve shadows of the 3D box, and "X"?
Of course...if I change the renderer to Cinema 4D it works ok, but CPU says "ouch, you're hurting me"
Ah. Me again. OK, so I think I may have narrowed-down the area of the problem (without actually resolving it). My 3D box had collapse transformations on. The layers inside the precomp were set to 3d and cast shadows as well.

You are a badass dude.
good tutorial thanks...
PHOTOFLASH POTHENCODE thanks!
Very helpful thank you!!! Also - are you Seth Rogen? I'm a BIG fan!

Dude that is awesome..IQ+100 lol..thanks for that 🤜🤛
Sweet!
How do you manage to cast shadows by the precomposition???
collapse transformations
WOW bless you, sir.
This doesn't work with Camera orbit null, would you happen to have a solution for that?
The camera has to be a one node camera.
smart af!
it’s 3D MAYA feature, Look Through Selected Light
Hey man.I have a problem using pallarel light.I can't drag the light caused it so far but when I zoom it out.its still unseen
Awesome
Helpful
VERY
when i add a spot light i cant even zoom out enough to see the cursor also have no option to switch to light view
I still have a black screen whenever I turn off the ambient light. I am shining it on an image backdrop. Can anyone help? This problem is driving me crazy.
ThanX from Russian Community!
TOP!!
U solve a nation problem 😂♥️
moving lights in after effects has always been a fucking nightmare
God save your working time, as you did to me.
my lights don't work :(
hmmm..
Why didn't I find you sooner? screw life
Ha! Glad to have you here.
