In this 5 minute quick tip tutorial video, I will show you everything you will need to know about masks.
I will start with the very basics, on how masks work and what they are good for! I will go over the different tools to create them
and explain in detail all steps you need to know.
Learn all about the pen tool, the rectangel tool, the rounded rectangel tool, the ellipse tool, the polygon tool and the star tool!
Learn how to add and remove vertexes. How to convert them and how to feather a mask with its properties as well as the mask feather tool.
You will also learn some pro tips on how to create a mask with the least amount of points and I will guide you through some handy and helpfull shortcuts as well as the differnten masking options such as add subtract intersect and so on.
If you haven't heared about compositing options then this will be a gamechanger for you, as with this tipp you can mask out effects on layers.
Up next will be rotoscoping, I will show you the best workflows and some handy features, such as the mask tracker and the face tracker within after effects.
But that is not all, in an easy to understand way I will show you tips for beginners as well as tricks for pros / professionals.
Auto trace will be the next topic and here you will learn how to automatically mask out images based on their alpha channel or on their luma values and you can also mask out not only still images, but whole footage clips!
To end this I will show you some examples on how to use masks for specific effects, such as the stroke effect, or how to make a text follow a path or mask. You will also learn how to set your "fist vertex" and how to create masks from a text.

@@flo.motion I want to build a pc for vfx and animation under 100k in Indian Ruppes. Can you suggest which cpu, graphics card and other components should i buy ?
In 5 minutes I understood what I did not understand in 1 month of classes (sorry I speak spanish, I use translator XD) Thank u!!!!!!
Thanks for the nice comment!! That was the plan!!
Thank lot Flomotion!
Thanks for watching!!

@@flo.motion may I ask you to show us again the last part of this video, (on the same example) but with more detailed if it is possible. I'm not sure that I get it the part with text follow path (on the hand) and mask from text. Thank you again.
Amazing
Thank you!!
That my friend was a professional tutorial! Thanks.
Thank you so so much!!
Happy New Year bro!) Hi from Russia!
Happy New Year!!
What a legend 🔥
who?
@@flo.motion YOU OF COURSE
Very useful.
Thanks!!
many thanks
subbed
Thank you!!
Thanks!
Thank you!!
Great 👍. I hope to see tracking tutorial
Wait for it!!
this vid is so so so so helpful. Just one question: can you create a singular mask out of multiple shapes? Like, say I have a checkerboard picture, and I want to put two of the checkerboard squares in the same mask but they arent connected. How would I do that?
Hey, I don't think this will work. But for which reason do you want to do that? Maybe we find a solution for that!
@@flo.motion I figured out an alternative already, but thanks for your reply!
Thank you!!! Just upgraded my life bro
Haha... Great to hear!!
mouse wheel, haha that video, made me smile xD
Jeah!! Made that especially for you!!
What should I do if my mask point handles are missing? Although in the view setting the display checkbox is(
Hey, are just the mask points visible and not the handles or both of them? You need to select the mask, makie sure you are in comp and not layer mode and yes, enable the mask view! Does anything of that help out?
Such an underrated tutorial
Haha... thank you!!
When I scroll my mouse wheel, it changes the size of my composition in the preview panel, not the number of points in the mask. How do I change that?
You need to scroll, while still holding down the other buttons that create the mask, so scroll while creating!!
can you add a line (border in color) to an animated mask? thanks
Yes you can! Simply apply the "stroke" effect to the layer.
How to apply a mask to just a few frames of a layer, and then remove the mask? back to normal? how do I do that?
Hey, there are a few differnet ways. 1. Keyframe the path and on the frame you don't want it to be there, simple move it out of the frame. 2. Animate the transparency of the mask! 3. Simply trim the layer to the timing where you want to have the path! I think there will be more ways, but let me know if one of those already helped!
your the best #Flomotion
Wow, thanks a lot!!
if i have a car that has been roto brushed and frozen, can i make a text mask that only shows up when the rotobrushed car drives past the text?
Jeah, you can use that as a track matte with the pig whip next to the layer. Super easy!!
great
thank you!!
im not getting add/invert option how do i fix this?
Try to click the toggle switches button at the bottom of the timeline left
For a second, I thought you were going to teach us how to make our own custom masks in After Effects to go to 3D print, for the help in reducing the spread of Covid. Haha!
😷😷😅🤣
I'm trying what you're showing, but everytime I use a rectangle mask, it doesn't actually mask anything. I have all my settings exactly the same as yours but it's not working.
Can you please help? (BTW, I'm using After Effects 2021)
hmmm... ok, what are you trying to mask? Do you have a layer selected?
@@flo.motion It's alright, I've figured it out now. It's because I had Twixtor on and I hadn't pre-comped the clip yet.
you are a lion, a dragon. Thank you, it was useful🥰
Thanks a lot!!
Please cover the camera and a 3D scene in the next episode
Great topic!! Will definitely do that in one of the next videos!!
Hey bro could you please make a video using Avathar SDK demo site.
Using this site we can create 3d face with just an photo and this is absolutely free.
Please make a 3d animation video using this
Hey! I will have a look at it! What is the final effect that you want to achieve with that?
@@flo.motion I want to make character animation and I did with my friend face
I created face model with this and created a character using blender then make animation using mixamo then exported as obj sequance then created a video. But that is not perfect
When he got to shape layers and took a deep sigh, " That's a different topic" >.
Haha... because it really is!!
Clear and easy to understand, on a scale from 1 to 10, you're an 11
WOW!!
👍👍
Thank you!!
We need more tuts in general
Hey! No problem!! Just give me some topics!!
@@flo.motion Thanks. One thing that comes to my mind is 3D animation using E3D and Particular and how can you animate the camera in such a 3D space where the two effects live together and interacting with each other. I have already worked on something similar but you doing a Tut I am sure i will gain more knowledge.
I can suggest other things as well if this is not working with you.
❤❤❤❤❤
Tnx
bg music makes it hard to follow along TT
You mean it is too loud??
I just want to know how to create a mask that stays in place on a moving layer😭😭
Just create a mask. Done. Or should it stay on the same spot in the footage? Then track the footage and attach the mask to the track
@@flo.motion I imported an Illustrator file that includes smaller moving objects that dont fill out a whole layer. When I create a mask on the moving layer the mask automatically moves with the object :(
The countdown gives me anxiety. haha.
Haha... me too!!
Man he got everything except for one thing: pasting same layer masks onto one another
What do you mean by that? Then I have two identical masks?
@@flo.motion no sir, say you had two different masks, on a different layer, when you copy and paste one of the masks onto the same layer as the other mask it just creates another mask on that layer called mask 2. But say you wanted the both masks on the same layer under the same mask how would you do that
@@ShrineStudios Thats what i need to know!
Music is distracting and way too loud!
Is it distracting because it is too loud??
@@flo.motion I mean it's only in the beginning. It is distracting because it doesnt fit in the setting of "Listen up. I'm gonna explain something to you"
what a useful tutorial thanks🔥
I do make tutorial and your creativity inspire me 😍👏
Thanks a lot for your nice words!!
