The reason I'll keep on coming back to your channel is because of how explanatory you made this video and the fact that you pointed out important things that I never even knew I needed. Thank you 🫶
Thank you so much for this! As an experienced Photoshop user learning AE 2020 I was frustrated always expecting AE to work similar to Photoshop, and to a certain extent it does. but this helped clarify the differences with regard to masking.
This was fantastic! I am very new to AE and just wanted to do something simple with a more complex shape, a heart, in a video and had no idea what to do. And masks were the answer all along. At first, they seem really intimidating, which they may be as you do more complicated animations, although your tutorial simplified them so well. Thank you so much!!!
Logan Pinney yo could you help when i render a regular video with no masking it renders perfectly but when i mask a video the video doesnt render fully
@@itsaer0 hmm very strange. You may have accidentally turned off effects for that layer, it is a small icon beside the layer name, you will have to google what it looks like. Are you exporting to media encoder and output to .mp4?
I was really hoping this video would help me understand why I can't create a mask over my single shape layer (the only layer in the entire project, as I'm just starting), but I'm not seeing the issue even after watching this video. I started a new project, created a star and keyframed it to scale up from 0-50% from the center and rotate in 145 degrees. Then, with the layer selected, I created a rectangle from just outside the viewing area at the top right to the center (as shown in the video you guys did on the benefits of precomposing - with the rotating masked squares). All it did was create a new rectangle shape within my layer. Creating a new mask from the layer menu isn't working either. I can't even figure out how to draw a path with the pen tool and convert it into a mask. Nothing is working!
I know this is a very old question, but - masks and shape layers use the same tools, but are different things. You *can* make a mask on a shape layer, but you need to make sure you select that before drawing. Create a shape so the shape layer has something visible. To add a mask, you need to make sure you're drawing a mask instead of a shape - there are two little icons in your top toolbar, between puppet pin and the Fill/Stroke controls. The star means you're drawing a shape, and the little checkerboard means you're drawing a mask.
How can you animate the image by keeping the mask static? Like you have a long image going bottom to up and you want a specific window to show the image. TIA
Hi there! I am curious, I have two words that I want to animate by making the first letter of the first world to move to the right into the second word which would be moving left with only the last letter remaining. So how would I get it have the letters in between disappear when I am having the words move to the center and all but two letter disappear?
Hi, I'm struggling with transparent pixels of images now and wandering is it possible to apply mask to layer cropping all blank pixels automatically? I can't do this in ps or somewhere else, because I use one premade composition many times, but I changed some layers every time by dragging them with Alt. I need to be sure that they will be in correct place (like I've draw it in ps) with all premade effects so that's why I import psd with only "Composition" and not "Composition - Retain layer size". But I really need this retain after :((
how are you able to select the masks and move them? for the life of me i can't figure it out. I click where it says masks, the points are selected, but when i drag the mask it doesn't move. what am I doing wrong?
What if the mask isn't showing what you did? For example, I set the mask around my subject. Whenever I do add, it doesn't do anything nor does it show a difference.
how do i use masks and motion tile together ? let's say i've removed the borders from a video with a mask, and i want to put motion tile on it. when i zoom out however the borders that i removed create space between the videos (does that make sense ? ) basically what i'm asking is how do you "remove" the excess parts of a video that's not included inside the mask?
The easiest route is to pre-compose the element, and crop that pre-composition to the size you want Motion Tile to actually "see." Applying Motion Tile to that pre-comp (as a layer in a parent comp) would then get you the results you're after.
I couldn't figure out how to draw a mask from the center with Ctrl: You have to left-click with the mouse first and only then hold Ctrl down, whereas when you use Shift to draw a square or a circle it doesn't matter what you click first.
Incredibly well explained. I wish all RUclips tutorials were as good as this. Bravo. 5 stars.
Excellent guide on using masks in After Effects! Your thorough explanations and practical examples make this complex topic much more approachable.
The BEST After Effects tutorial I've ever seen! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

Hi, there’s a quicker way of scaling a video inside a mask without scaling the mask?
Can I use a black and white png as a mask?
how do you center mask tho? there are only feather, opacity, mask expansion settings in there, how do i adjust just like shape layer?
It doesn't have those same capabilities.
the fact that school of motion never told us how to make their own intro is funny
There are no files to download. I made an account to see if I could and it logs me out each time I try to explore courses.
how can we copy the mask from a layer to another & then flip it without affecting the whole layer?
i want to do masking with mask 1 but it changes to mask 2 after some time ?
6:11 but where can I put keyframe for this movement??
