Expanding on this: your quest was a lie. MGSV burns the narrative down in flames. The big action Hollywood showdown you want? Metal Gear continually shows us how fruitless this image worship is, and V solidifies that hollowness. You get nothing except for endlessly recurring systemic war without end.
I remember watching "The Devil's Backbone" years ago when it came out on DVD and realizing immediately that it was a masterclass in film making. del Toro is a genius. I can't believe I didn't make the connection between MSGV and the movie.
I had similar thoughts when I watched Del Toro's Pinocchio, there are a lot of shared themes between that and Death Stranding, but I didn't realise some of it went back as far as 2001, that's awesome!
This recursive loop that Venom finds himself in is quite mirrored in our missing faceless friend, Skull Face. We're left burning forever. In Outer Heaven, in the burning weapons factory, in the burning hospital, burned at torturers hands, and recreating, by our own hands, our own recurring trauma at the quarantine factory, all while spreading war as a disease and deadly parasite. I like to think of Skull Face as if almost a reincarnation of The Medics (ours?) lingering will. A man whose face has been burned away on countless occasion in fire, who seeks to undo the system that has imprisoned him here. We see Skull Faces will recur, like action and reaction, textually through "Liquid"'s continual presence later, both physically and in "will". With how much MGSV distorts our vision of "reality", who's to say everything isn't a reflection of the medic (our) actual selves. Tactfully contrasted with Venom: an empty vessel, a nothing. Reduced to Zero, with nothing to light up the dark in his eyes, it's all been sucked out from him. Venom is just left there, stranded. Silent. Skull Face speaks, broadly and loudly. FOX vs XOF "Peace Day never came"
Always a good day when Futurasound uploads. Metal Gear Solid is my favorite game series of all time and it's so amazing to me that we have such quality deep dives into all the fassets of the games. It really feels like taking classes on my favorite game that I wanna learn and soak up every bit that I can.
Amazing job identifying these parallels, some of them I didn't even think about, like the horn-bomb. The halls mentioned really reminded me of the halls in mgsV intro, and the whole building in general, that hospital/orphanage vibe. Amazing video as always! keep it up ❤
very fun vid, Kojima's always been a film nerd so it's pretty interesting seeing just how far into Del Toro's works he's been influenced by. Devil's Backbone is one of Del Toro's favorite projects right up with Pan's Labyrinth and very recently Pinocchio. In fact, I find it amazing how Pinocchio not only dovetails motifs from Devil's Backbone (the idea of explosive events creating ghosts) but also in how "rebirth" is seen as explosive as seen in Death Stranding. Noticing more and more there's media exploring this theme of "rebirth" in terms of changing your life in a dramatic way following some sort of traumatic event, whether physical, emotional or spiritual. It could be seen as a distant homage to Akira in that respect while leaning on the overall concept of the Big Bang.
Reminds me of one of Kojima earlier games called Snatcher, it was heavily inspired by Blade Runner and the Terminator, hell even the first Metal Gear cover art is a modified picture of future war Kyle Reese
Metal gear solid will forever be the greatest masterpiece he has ever made, a game way ahead of its time, and to this day still smacks modern games even with it’s dated graphics.
The Spanish language mentioned in this video may also cause some "conflicts" of massive magnitude with the "good listener's" "internal timeline" "for a S-Special reason."
Jacob's Ladder is another inspiration for the game. Watch the movie an you'll see visual details that are reflective of th game. Also the protagonist being a "medic" who goes through psychological plot in a government conspiracy is kinda key
You have to look at mgsv as an unfinished psychological experiment, because it touches deeply on the theme of 'loss' before anything else, trauma, horror, war, demons and, angels if they were just able to stick to the paradise lost and lord of the flies themes, they could possibly reinvent the 'original' Metal Gear and have Liquid and Solid have parallel Synchronistic* events that branch into different games as they come to terms with who and what they really are. In the end its mostly about Man playing God with the whole splitting of the Atom/Adam, if you get where I'm going and The Boss's original intent of leaving the world as it is.
I've been watching videos of military folk analyzing movie scenes and it's really just pointed out how MGS, including V, is entirely comprised of explicit references to movie scenes. I'd have to go back and remind myself of some of them, but Shoutout to the airplane scene from Congo.
Yes. Basically anything he's ever been a part of has had most of the ideas ripped straight from a bunch of films, and not even in a remotely artful way.
@@someguyjohn6599 kojima doesn't borrow, he straight up steals. solid snake? literally kurt russel's snake plissken. there are shots from snatcher that are literally taken from blade runner.
You should check out a zombie film called Pontypool. Pretty sure Kojima took ideas from that for MGSV. I won't say which ones because it would spoil the film if you haven't seen it.
Wasn’t the original Metal Gear based on the Escape from “This location” movies with Kurt Russell? If I remember correctly his movie characters name was Pliskin Snake or something like that great films btw
While I am a really passionate fanatic of both MGS and Del Toro’s masterpieces, I am afraid I found this video highly speculative, stating ideas as facts that does not %100 seem to be the case
It’s kinda not only fitting that another word for phantom is demon But it’s also fitting that big boss/ venom snake is referred to as a demon since he is the bad guy after all.
I can totally see the influences with the hospital at the beginning of metal gear v being inspired by the orphanage, by the way its also called el orfanato or the orphanage
I absolutely loved mgs5. To think we aren't getting another stealth action game similar because of DS and now DS2 really hurts. Now i come here just to suffer and watch cool strange MSGV vide😢😂😒😡🤬🤪!
I love mgsv but I saw this movie a few times since it came out; and I never liked it. I now can finally understand why people don't like mgsv seeing these both compared.
While I enjoy the content about the games and around the games, nothing will make the Metal Gear Solid series not suffer from its hangover after metal gear solid 3. Metal gear sold, mgs2 and 3 were great games to play even with the overdone cinematic stuff and over acting by the voice actors. Mgsv just wasn’t good. It was promising with Ground Zeroes but Kojima just does too much bullshitting and the game suffered dramatically. The game wasn’t even finished. Wasn’t fully fleshed out. I hope kojima does another metal gear but at this point he’ll just make another stinker like death stranding aka DHS simulator.
That's the problem with creatives, one day they'll just walk away from their original vision and dive into something their original admirers don't care for
Many of his "greatest" ideas are just shlock from American B movies. It's embarrassing to realize most inspiration is simply lifted, and people put on blinders to the low quality because it's presented as quirky Japanese creativity.
Hahah I'd rather watch this movie than play the game honestly. Story wise it was weaaak af lol but the gameplay smooth as butter tho😅 It felt like a game with half the effort lol. Always keeping an eye on Kojima's next game coz he has a high probability of making a great game but MGS5 and Death's felt lukewarm to me if that makes sense, good gameplay tho 😅
This is far better than most commentary on RUclips that focuses on some variation of "The Boss was actually gray fox who was decoy octopus the whole time, and also Chapter 3 is totally coming even though literally in the game Paz expresses Peace Day Never Came"
Whenever I played mgsv, I always wished it would continue through at least to the end of the first Metal Gear
We all do brother, it’s clear there is a huge element of the game that is missing.
Metal Gear doesn't matter.
Venom does.
That would be a trip, pretty much a remake of Metal Gear, then meeting Solid Snake just to get beaten by him!

Cool video! I guess I’d better check out that movie…
We all know it was Snake from escape from New York where they got the idea for Metal Gear.
Albert Einstein over here
Kurt Russell was actually based on Iroquois Pliskin
Good video though I think PS1 Vagrant Story has better case for being a larger inspiration for MGSV
Created for the ruse or used for it?
Ah, so I finally know what to blame for that fucking dumpster fire
So John carpenter's escape from New York doesn't have any influence on metal gear??????????????????
none at all.
Just the character snake pliskin
