From what I remember reading at the time, the Fox engine suffers from most of the same problems as Square Enix's Luminous engine. Sure, it's super powerful and genuinely amazing, but you need to be able to program in both Japanese and English, it's super complicated, and Unreal does 90% of the same stuff much easier. Sometimes it's hard to justify a boutique engine.

Rather than zombies, I think the game would have been more well-received had the premise been something along the lines of a soldier trapped behind enemy lines having to escape/survive against overwhelming odds, with a focus on stealth and survival mechanics with the player having to manage their hunger, thirst and sleep while also avoiding enemy patrols. If the 80 Million was the total, even if overbudgeting the fault is in Konami for not caring enough to ask for an openworld AAA game from Kojima that costed less, they should be grateful for having a franchise and devs who can make great and acclaimed products that will be well received and turn in more profit and new loyal consumers in the future. Appropriate to its secret-time-travel story, Metal Gear Survive seems like a game displaced in time. Everything in this video makes it sound like it would've been a PERFECT smaller-scale portable release on like, the DS or PSP. Unfortunately it released in an era where those don't exist anymore, trying to fit it into the market that does exist only hurts them, and of course it was at basically the absolute WORST time to release a lower-budget Metal Gear spinoff.

@@nazrulaqmar4891 The concept of 'handheld gaming' has transformed significantly; thanks to the Steam Deck and Switch you can play full console games on handheld. And you've also got mobile gaming, where a much smaller team can make a smaller spinoff intended for a less involved playtime, but they've honed in on very specific styles of game that are nothing like the console games. So there is a divide, but it's a very different kind of divide.
I think Survive seems like specifically the kind of mobile game that you see a major franchise put out on a handheld console, particularly in the DS/PSP era. You know, where they hand it off to the B-team and you get something that plays mostly like the main games but is smaller-scale, has some weird experimental mechanics, is more designed around short bursts of playtime, and probably isn't canon? I'm not one of those that screams about gaming being better back in the day as we have a ton of amazing games these days, but I can't help but really miss some of the old days and how if you saw a publisher or dev associated with a game you could almost bet it would be good. Hell, go back in time far enough, and there was an era where a game with the Sonic Team logo on it would be considered gold. You could always bet on those developers' games being top notch, and now it feels like all of them have taken massive falls.

While I personally loved this game and how hard it was to actually survive, and to play around in the FOX engine a bit more, it really frustrated me when reviews for the game came out on RUclips and Dunkey, a very popular, (not good) reviewer did a video on the game. He basically played the first 20 minutes and then released a video about it as if that was anywhere near enough to actually review the game. The game has some cool stuff in it, I personally loved being able to use a Helicopter blade as a sword while dressing up like a random fake MGS military squad.

1:20 - In my experience most of the bad games eventually do skew back towards "Mostly Positive", even the real garbage. Once the post-launch reviews are in and it says "Mostly Negative", the only people who are going to buy it are people determined to like it, who'll insist on leaving a "I don't get why everyone hates this game?!?" review. And of course, people buying it to leave useless, unfunny joke reviews. Then as the recent reviews start to creep up, people will start to get it on sale because they think the game got an update that makes it good or something, and figure "Sure, now that the game's $1.50 and not $60 it's not so bad". Meanwhile anyone who knows why the game's so bad doesn't buy it and thus doesn't knock the score back down with negative reviews.

Heyyy, I'm one of those aforementioned crazy folks of the 100-ish daily players that still log in to Survive today. And I gotta say, you absolutely did a great job in being fair covering Survive, especially compared to what everyone said about it in 2018-19. To be perfectly clear, I have over 800 hours in the game, 4 characters, 2 of them with all 4 sublcasses maxed out (and the other 2 are almost there), and I even made my own review of the game on my main account's channel. I really like this game, and I am one of its craziest defenders today. I did note a couple of inconsistencies you didn't get 100% right but it was nothing big (one I remember is that you don't always have to reload a save on dying; the game lets you port back to base and leave a box with all your gathered materials in it that you can retrieve later). I did want to say that I feel like the multiplayer was the point of this game, and once you really dig into Extreme matches with a group of 4 you start to see a side of the game that doesn't come out at any other time, and really wouldn't work if you didn't work as hard as you have to in order to get to that point. In other words, the endgame of Survive is super hard, but it's very learnable for almost anyone, and once you get a team of 4 who have that learning already done, you'll be really impressed with what you can do just by having experience. You don't have to be a god gamer to be great at Survive, you just have to be smart enough and willing to put in the work. So in light of that I wish you hadn't said players shouldn't do multiplayer as soon as possible, because that's what I tell everyone. As soon as you hit level 5, hop into the Discord and there will inevitably be someone who's willing to carry you or let you tag along and help you get a lot of materials, which makes the rest of the single player story so much less of a chore. On that note, there's a big Survive Discord server with hundreds of people in it on every platform that I see match up every day, and the in-game matchmaking Survive provides absolutely blows, so you really should get on Discord to group up here like you mentioned. Thanks for being so fair to Survive, I enjoyed watching your video! I play on PC too, so if you ever want to come back to the game for some masochistic reason, hit me up on Steam. I'm Rossaroni on there. I solo hard salvages all the time, I'll show you what those hammers are really for.
[Edit to add] Oh I also wanted to say that despite my 800+ hours, I also have not gotten the 100% on Survive. It's a silly thing.

I played through the beta AND the game itself, and it was fun.
I think it was one of those games where it would've really hit its own sort of stride with a sequel that its almost definitely never going to get, though. And it REALLY shouldn't have been called Metal Gear. If it were just called 'Survive', or 'Dite', or something, and Konami used it to let their developers gain experience using the FOX engine, it would've gone over way better.
As is, though, I enjoyed it. I didn't have any friends who were willing to give it a go, so I was mostly going through it solo and without much of the end-game to experience, but the solo experience was solid if definitely not what I wanted out of a MGS game, and the handful of co-op matches I did were honestly kind of a blast, I'm not gonna lie.
Also, I still think the reveal that your home base is built from the wreckage of a Diamond Dogs Mother Base from a timeline where the Dust managed to return and infect everyone is a genuinely really well-done and shocking bit, complete with the realization that the logo also has that fucked up crystal protrusion coming out of the dog's head.
