Careful, there are natural disasters that take out hundreds of thousands of homes every year. I'd think we've lost more personal homes due to fires in the last several years than hurricanes, by a long shot. At least after a hurricane most people only have some minor repairs, and some major clean up, whereas with fires there is no repairing the home, it's gone.

It’s the counties that lose the discounts and the money to cover the difference will come out of everyone’s pocket - that is why code enforcement is so on the ball here. The homeowner can still get work done but under a Florida licensed contractor so that hurricane level building codes are followed. This also keeps a check on insurance costs so those of us who cannot afford to rebuild their home are not bankrupted by a loss like this.
buckle up, the beaches dont play with no-permits. 5x permit fees. Hire a licensed Contractor, pull a permit. Hopefully dont loose your home to the 49 percent rule.
Ya, 22 million plus people who live there as residents are going to pack up and move. I live on the river 14 miles inland from where Milton hit...the eye went right over us. They said 10 to 15 feet of storm surge for 5 full days. We got zero. The island got zero. Nobody on the river got any damage other than downed trees. What you almost always see videos of when Hurricanes hit Florida are the barrier islands, which have been majority rentals for years now. Anna Maria island is currently 80% rentals. This is mostly because the islands allow airbnb and people get sick of seeing new people in and out on a daily or weekly basis. Inland, most communties have banned airbnb short term rentals. Island communties get built up for tourism and short term rentals. Locals begin to see their small community beaches turned into Disney world by the government to add tax revenue since added tax revenue is created beyond property taxes with airbnb type rentals. This is the main reason people leave the islands...not the storms. Hurricanes have been a part of Florida since the beginning. Media always hypes it up like "this" is the worst season ever and only getting worse. Not true. The worst hurricane season for Florida was in the 1800's....second worst was 20 years ago. This is just a typical hurricane season for Florida. For Sarasota and Bradenton area, where I live, this is the most damage we have seen to the island in over 100 years. Its not like it comes every three years. Most people will assume they have another 100 before it happens again. New building codes will help most of the new property built. 95% of the damage is to older 1 story homes. Some of these homes are 75 to 100 years old and made out of wood.

Im on board with the %50 rule. If you total your home it needs to be built to the new code standards and requirements to prevent future failure. Code is there for a reason.
It's not harrassment. You have to comply with the rules or you risk losing the FEMA money for the entire city. If he does not want to stop working, it will cost him a lot more in the long run and he will be force to stop anyway. Just follow the rules for the good of everyone.
The building department will 50% rule this guy out of existence, change the zoning to require the house be elevated and he will be back in Georgia wondering what the hell happened. Your dream home was just that - a dream.
They have just as much to lose as the people they’re trying to bully………… You’re right though, they will continue their behavior until they start losing things they can’t get back, All it’ll take is one person to be pushed when they feel like they ain’t got nothing to lose, And in a chaotic situation like that one , They’ll get to be very nasty for several days before anybody gets a good look at them 🤓
So, a person brings out of state workers to repair his home, which may not be registered with the state, for insurance or construction licenses. If true he may need to be fined and all work torn down. You live here need to follow the law.
If you’re simply replacing dry wall, flooring, etc to the same specifications it was before then you don’t need permits from what I’ve read from my county website. As long as you’re not removing load bearing walls there shouldn’t be an issue.
I bet he doesn't stop. My uncle lives in Pinellas County. All he had was a little bit of tree damage from both hurricanes. They told him he couldn't stay. He told them to hit the road and don't come back.
Why doesn't he just get the permit? If he really 'has a contracting company' he ought to know about getting those. He's being a bad neighbor if he's risking everyone else losing an insurance discount because he can't control his impatience. With his attitude if he really does have a contracting company, I think that company ought to be investigated to make sure they aren't skipping other building rules.
I understand his frustration, but we need to make sure the house is safe for him and the next owner. Wish the inspectors could move quicker so these unfortunate folks can rebuild sooner.
Cape Coral/ Fort Myers learned about FEMA two years ago. Then, Tampa had a disaster and they said, FEMA is great! Now, here's a kick in the mouth from FEMA.
When he bought the house he signed agreements to follow code. Fixing things his way will only make the property unsellable. That is assuming it’s not washed away next year, which is likely. The ‘hundred year storm’ has become the ‘every year storm’.
This law has to be done. No one has the right to do this. You have to pull permits. That’s the law. This guy just wants to break him because it suits him but they’re important.
This issue of FEMA (Federal rules and regulations) should not apply to people who are paying for their own repairs. The rules and regulations should be based in each state.
Yeah thats cool keep working no permit,No government help. if it cost over 50% to rebuild city can make you tear it down build to new code standards. Think i will always rent in Florida never build.
Of course, tell them the rules after they start working what do you think people are going to do sit there and keep looking at it and letting it rot?? Sounds hinky to me.
This is why structures in Florida are subpar and all those condos collapsed. These people need to have extreme insurance deductibles - they are ignorant
DO NOT let anyone using federal loan money to rebuild without raising the foundation. These guys will patch these things up and sell to the next sucker that's never lived in the subtropics.
So a home that's damaged because of the flood zone area, Needs to be repaired accordingly because of high chances it will be damaged at some point by being where hurricanes cause damage and flooding ?
Why don't they put the power lines underground, instead of on poles. Water tight tech isnt that advanced? Short is Ezr to fix than downed power lines..
That's the problem with taking money from the federal government. They're in charge. BTW, if the federal government has hundreds of billions to sends to states that just means they're taking in too much federal dollars in taxes. The feds are suppose to protect our borders and provide for the general defense.
If you I am not asking FEMA for their assistance --- then how is FEMA going to tell me what to do? A locality accepting Federal dollars may bind their hands however their decisions cannot bind mine. IF I am not accepting FEMA money then how am I bound by their rules?

Hope he loses his subsidized FEMA funding that all tax payers are paying for. What a piece of work.
You need to do some research! FEMA funding? Have You ever been in this situation?
It’s the counties that lose the discounts and the money to cover the difference will come out of everyone’s pocket - that is why code enforcement is so on the ball here. The homeowner can still get work done but under a Florida licensed contractor so that hurricane level building codes are followed. This also keeps a check on insurance costs so those of us who cannot afford to rebuild their home are not bankrupted by a loss like this.
@@AzBats0221 LaLa land....
Are you talking about the $750.00 ?
All tax payers do not subsidize National flood insurance.
Owner -builder has always been standard in Florida
And with the government involved it will take years to get anything done
Ths is spinning out of control. Both sides need to come together and work this out. This doesn't have to be this way.
buckle up, the beaches dont play with no-permits. 5x permit fees. Hire a licensed Contractor, pull a permit. Hopefully dont loose your home to the 49 percent rule.
U only lose it u accept $ from the government. If u can afford to rebuild yourself, no one will take your house.
Florida will become a rental home state, with ownership being too costly. Florida, Sunshine State's new motto: “Visit and return home.”
Panama City Beach is already there nobody actually lives in PCB
Ur gay
Actually the local authorities can give waivers but don’t want to
Rebuilding in the swamp! 🤡 Keep building and I’ll keep watching every hurricane season. 🍿
When Galveston Tx was Hit. Fema rebuilt my uncles house. while they where rebuilding It got hit with another storm .tore down house Fema Rebuilt the house Twice For my Uncle. Yes two years later. but it was done
As long as the permits are issued before or after the work is completed
We have been dealing with this mother may I bull in Calif for 20 years
If you are taking money or Aid from the Government/Tax Payers they must do their utmost to insure Tax Payer Dollars are spent wisely and appropriately preventing fraud and abuses !
Vomit since when does the government do anything right, I would trust a private citizen more, ppl cheat because the government is so corrupt
You will comply!
Unfortunately , regardless of the reason, these owners need to hire a legal contractor to pull, permits and do the repairs.
Im on board with the %50 rule. If you total your home it needs to be built to the new code standards and requirements to prevent future failure. Code is there for a reason.
For the love of God, people do not need a bunch of red tape after a disaster of this magnitude!
It's not red tape. People expect the hoise to be up to code before it is sold. Dont want shady stuff going on.
Right, but many would patch things up and sell it without proper mold mitigation.
It's not harrassment. You have to comply with the rules or you risk losing the FEMA money for the entire city. If he does not want to stop working, it will cost him a lot more in the long run and he will be force to stop anyway. Just follow the rules for the good of everyone.
Yes. Just follow the rules. Exactly what the Germans said in the 30’s.
The building department will 50% rule this guy out of existence, change the zoning to require the house be elevated and he will be back in Georgia wondering what the hell happened. Your dream home was just that - a dream.
They have just as much to lose as the people they’re trying to bully………… You’re right though, they will continue their behavior until they start losing things they can’t get back, All it’ll take is one person to be pushed when they feel like they ain’t got nothing to lose, And in a chaotic situation like that one , They’ll get to be very nasty for several days before anybody gets a good look at them 🤓
I live in Port Orange, Florida. They regularly waive permit fees. I'd hope other cities do, too.
Fix your home and tell them to pound sand. They are playing a grift.
So, a person brings out of state workers to repair his home, which may not be registered with the state, for insurance or construction licenses. If true he may need to be fined and all work torn down. You live here need to follow the law.
Guarantee you he doesn't live here. this is either a second home for him or an Airbnb rental.
It doesn’t matter, it’s his house and he brought down people he knew to get shit done. Registered with the state. Lol
If you’re simply replacing dry wall, flooring, etc to the same specifications it was before then you don’t need permits from what I’ve read from my county website. As long as you’re not removing load bearing walls there shouldn’t be an issue.
Their crazy. They all need repairs. Their lucky people stay with snakes, alligators , hurricanes.
Sorry, Florida has strict building codes, you can't just build a bunch of non code repairs that will blow away in the next storm.
Idiot to go camera and emphatically say I’m not going to stop working after getting a stop work order. Real smart guy…
Good for him standing up against tyrants
Florida has strict building codes for a reason, this is not the Bahamas where everything blows over
I understand his frustration, but we need to make sure the house is safe for him and the next owner.
No one forced these people to live on the coast
Why the hell would you buy a home in St. Pete’s? Renting seems like a better option nowadays.
This law has to be done. No one has the right to do this. You have to pull permits. That’s the law. This guy just wants to break him because it suits him but they’re important.
What is your favorite shoe polish flavor on the boots you lick?
I'm surprised. The way people talk I meet from Florida, about how low construction wages are, I didn't think they had building standards at all.
Desantia said no red tape
50% of the depreciated value of the structure, suggest you check the rules before you start your restoration.
That lady sounds like she's in the Gustavo.
I'm not going government permission on my repairs either.
Screw them. Are they paying? No.
I don't have insurance.
Most people dont own their homes the BANK does
This issue of FEMA (Federal rules and regulations) should not apply to people who are paying for their own repairs. The rules and regulations should be based in each state.
Yeah thats cool keep working no permit,No government help. if it cost over 50% to rebuild city can make you tear it down build to new code standards. Think i will always rent in Florida never build.
Rich guy doesn't like rules everyone else has to follow... Only news on a Sinclair station...
Gee, sounds like FL. is now California Jr.
You sound like a Kraut! 😂🤣
Of course, tell them the rules after they start working what do you think people are going to do sit there and keep looking at it and letting it rot?? Sounds hinky to me.
If you are getting any kind of payment and i mean any doesn’t have to be money
Then yoy must have a license
This guy. Dont stop the work and dont tell them either.
It’s fun watching adults slowly understand how the world works. At 55… 😏
This is why structures in Florida are subpar and all those condos collapsed. These people need to have extreme insurance deductibles - they are ignorant
DO NOT let anyone using federal loan money to rebuild without raising the foundation. These guys will patch these things up and sell to the next sucker that's never lived in the subtropics.
Who cares.
You just moved there but don't want to follow the rules.
Nice Try ... if You are making "the rules" and they benefit You.
@@chipsramek3868 FEMA makes the rules.
So a home that's damaged because of the flood zone area, Needs to be repaired accordingly because of high chances it will be damaged at some point by being where hurricanes cause damage and flooding ?
You voted for it, you deserve it!!🤡👍
This is the new eminent domain. Push back now or loose it forever.
This guy is just learning about building codes? Has he been living in a cave for the first 50 years of his life? What an entitled jerk.
They need to raise the entire state of Florida!
I feel so bad for this rich guy. What a horrible thing to have to follow laws. Poor baby!
Fema doesn't work for us.
More red tape who would have thought
Want control
Why don't they put the power lines underground, instead of on poles. Water tight tech isnt that advanced? Short is Ezr to fix than downed power lines..
Geography, geology, and environmental factors.
That's the problem with taking money from the federal government. They're in charge. BTW, if the federal government has hundreds of billions to sends to states that just means they're taking in too much federal dollars in taxes. The feds are suppose to protect our borders and provide for the general defense.
Got to love the government
“ Code Enforcement “ is out of control EVERYWHERE !!
Wow,they want our taxpayers money but don’t want to follow the local laws?
Insurance money
If you I am not asking FEMA for their assistance --- then how is FEMA going to tell me what to do? A locality accepting Federal dollars may bind their hands however their decisions cannot bind mine. IF I am not accepting FEMA money then how am I bound by their rules?
