Can these cheap Honda Goldwings make it 4,000 miles to Key West and back?

- GoPro, you let us down... We left from Iowa and headed out to the southern most point (Key West, Florida) during the winter. Battling cold weather, snow, rain, wind, and more cold our GoPros failed on us consistantly throughout our trip. We scraped together what we could salvage and made one big @$$ video out of it! Even though it didn't turn out as planned I hope everyone still enjoys our "Old wing" challenge!!!
Sorry for selling out and monetizing! I don’t like ads anymore than the next guy but it’ll help support future endeavors and boy do we have some ideas!!!
I seen this forsale on marketplace & have the bike saved. Chuckled & figured I’d give this a view!
You put in the work! Might as well get paid. I'll gladly watch ads for content like this!
I'm from Iowa too man! Keep up the great content. Was thinking about driving down to Florida myself.
I want to hear about your upcoming adventures. I ride and big fan of proven (old) motorcycles.
((( ALASKA !!! )))
I live in Boise, Idaho. A few years back I bought a '85 Goldwing Interstate 1200 w/71K miles on it that had sat in a garage for 2 years. 2 weeks later, after some minor preventative maintenance, I rode it to Portland, Oregon. Stayed a week for work. Then up to Mt. St. Helens before returning back to Boise. That bike purred like a kitten getting its back rubbed. I still have it. Great bike.
As someone who just bought a goldwing 2 weeks ago, in the short time I've had it, I can safely say, 95% of the remaining goldwings (88+) can make that trip regardless of mileage
LOL.
Theres definestly some high miles old ones that are still ticking so
What's wrong with my 86? Lol
thats honda for ya
I had a 1985 Aspencade got it with 60 000 miles on it put another 60,000 miles on it, took it motorcycle camping loaded to the max always handled great 40 mph up hill down hill head wind tail wind great bike, one thing to watch for is the stator connection to the wiring harness next to the battery they corrode and take out the stator I eliminated the plug and just hard wired it.
It goes to show you don’t need to buy a crazy expensive motorcycle to take a long road trip and enjoy yourself. As long as it’s been maintained. I did that same trip solo on my Honda 750 Super Sport back in 1976. No windshield,
No credit card, no cell phone, no GPS, no camping gear. Just a sissy bar with extra clothes, a black leather jacket, leather boots, jeans and a $19 dollar K mart helmet. I avoided Georgia as much as possible going through South Carolina and on to Florida east coast then down to the Keys back to Illinois. About 3500 round trip.
I remember shopping at K-mart and waiting for the “Blue Light Special”. 😆😆😆
@@NuvolariF1 Actually I remember getting my red metal flake helmet and clear face shield on sale that day. But it wasn’t a blue light special! Lol
I was a mechanic for Honda, so I got my motorcycle at a discount too!
I literally broke it out of the crate on my lunch hour, put it together and did the service. My boss asked me why I didn’t work that fast on his customers bikes…lol. Ended up quitting that summer for a better paying job. Worked that one long enough to save money for my motorcycle trip. I actually got the job back when I returned three months later and 27 pounds lighter! I saved my money for fuel and ran out of money for food.
Came back with only $14 left in my pocket. I calculated my mileage and fuel cost for my return trip extremely close and slept in rest stops all night next to my Motorcycle. A nice lady felt sorry for me and gave me a paper plate with pork and beans in the morning before I left Jacksonville Florida”s rest stop. That paper plate of beans had to sustain me all the way back to Illinois. I still remember that nice lady to this day!
@@Michael-st1hl Thank you for sharing your story. I could relate as a similar scenario happened to me and my brother on a skiing trip up in Mammoth Mountain and running out of money. We under-budgeted our trip. With the grace of God and with the help of kind people we made it home. We were just teenagers back then 😆😆😆. I do remember one particular man that asked us if we were Christians which we were and still are (Catholics) and gave us a prayer and gifted us 20.00 dollars which allowed us to get enough gas to get home. Gas back then was .85/gal. It was an adventure that I will never forget. I miss those days in the 70s and 80s.
@@NuvolariF1 Thank you for sharing your story as well. When we are young I guess we all have that adventurous spirit. I am catholic as well and sure miss the seventies when things where more innocent and we lived in a sane society. God Bless!
Funny. Did a Montreal to Vancouver, British Columbia and down the left coast to LA in 77 on my 750 Super Sport like you. Ha.
my grandfather rode goldwings and was a member of the gold wing road riders association and i kinda spent my later childhood riding his 1800 and going to meets. he recently passed and in his later years was unable to ride and eventually had his bike converted to a trike but still unfortunately didn’t get to enjoy it much. hearing those wings again and those distinct honda shifts brought back a lot of good memories. thanks for the great video
What an epic trip! Thank for letting us join in! Just got in to Motorcycling and looking at taking a longer Solo trip this summer across my country of Sweden.
Every ride my brother-in-law and I went on is summed up in the great comradary experienced by you guys in taking "another ride" There are inevitable glitches, rain, crappy gas stations, more rain, "where are we moments?" become secondary to the scenery, people, and saddle miles that make a ride unforgettable. Thank you for letting me ride along!
Everyone go yell at GoPro for letting us down! Not even these ‘action’ cameras could survive what we went through!
Fast action jackson loved watching the video
Wouldnt have those problems with a Drift HD. Ridden through tropical storms in Florida with those and they worked flawlessly. Not sure about the new stuff though.
Whoever owned that blue bike first you can tell really loved it.
GoPro's are shit....Osmo Action 3 all the way.
Maybe stop using GoPro and get a decent camera. Insta360 and DJI are good
Fantastic video. Just bought an 1800 2 years ago, they really are made for that kind of travel. Lots of weird little electrical things but the owners typically take really good care of them, and they are comfortable for doing all day riding long miles.
I’m jealous of his 1800 haha. Infinite power!
this video definitely earned you guys a new subscriber. i love seeing guys put it out there you dont to spend 40k on a bike and gear to go have a great adventure on motorcycles
Some people are missing the whole point of the video just because we didn’t come out and say it. I’m glad you and some others got it!
I'm from one of those small towns like you see abandoned. 90% of the time the story behind those, is they are industry towns, where most of the population was employed by a major factory of some sort in that area. Those places close down for whatever reason and most of the population moves out. The south is a blue collar industry. My hometown died off like that because they built a bypass hwy around the main center of town and it relied a lot on travelers income. The main factory that employed most everyone ended up getting bought out by an outside company and in a matter of 5 years the town went from population 10,000 to about 900. You usually hear stories like that from the early 20th century but it still happens in this day and age. Especially in southern towns. My hometown for instance died off between 2006 and 2012. Even the school closed.
Missouri native here I live pretty close to Illinois and do know a little back story to those towns on the Illinois side, they used to be booming industrial towns that supplied barges. But as St. Louis got more popular and the industry’s moved through more populated towns. There wasn’t really any good paying jobs on the Illinois side. People either worked in missouri and lived in Illinois or found good paying jobs in Illinois which is not so common. Illinois has some pretty high taxes so people either moved to northern Illinois or surrounding states.
GREAT video...and the Wings came through. Can't beat a Honda. You guys are hilarious...especially with the beer. Funny as hell.
Fantastic video guys, true to life with the ups and downs on the road. Thanks again.
Gotta tell you guys that this is the 2nd time watching this. Living vicariously as my bikes here in Canada are stored for the winter and Key West is my happy place. Been there a 1/2 dozen times. Thanks for making the video!
10:58 aww man! Love it when when they finally roll over but always fun in starting process 😊
Thank you for sharing the adventure! I've always wanted to do a motorcycle trip like this. Makes me want to buy an old goldwing now haha
Классное видео получилось! Классно прокатились на мотоциклах! Хонда хорошие мотоциклы делает! Мне понравилось! Круто Круто!!!
I am a native Iowan. Got my first little Honda Mini bike in 1971, so yeah, i 'm old as dirt., but i do still ride a 1996 Honda ST 1100. Gotta say you guys are a little crazy, and impressive all at the same time leaving in the snowy part of the year, and going so far away. But, you went the correct direction !:) Job well done !
You guys loading up with beer was the perfect splash of midwestern flavor from the Iowa boys. Grea5 vid for a lazy Sunday afternoon. Thanks!
Great video. I picked up a GL1500 for $500 and it is now my daily driver. It has some amount more than 57K miles on it. I am sure even though that 1800 had 200k+ miles on it, it was much nicer than the 1200. I had a 1200 and it ran great, but it wasn't the best.
I really enjoyed your trip. Thanks!
Thanx for the vid guys, God bless. Amazing trip, like the beer space on the old girl. My girl and I are planning a 3500 - 4000 km trip in Des on our 2009 Vulcan 900 Classic LT. I love the old wing more
Cool trip guys. Thanks for sharing
Congrats on 1K! I was number 942, you guys make some great content that I've been watching all day. Keep it up, I look forward to more adventures!
Nashville 2008 Goldwing rider here. I recognized the neighborhood you stayed in here. I have ridden my wing to Key West, Yellowstone, California/Mexico, Atlantic coast from Delaware through the Carolinas and enjoyed watching your adventure.
Awesome video! Got a kick out of the extra cargo you guys picked up , on the way back. The cargo space in the ‘86 is impressive.
An excellent video. It must have been frustrating having your rain gear let you down. But not as frustrating as the GoPro crapping the bed. For all that it was a great trip. you definitely proved the reliability of the Hondas.
The Hondas were supposed to let us down and pulled through. All the fancy crap failed. It’s all backwards!
@@Project-Odyssey It’s hard to go past Hondas and Yamahas for longevity and reliability. They are very solidly built in my experience.
I too have a 1986 GL1200 Aspencade, looks like the sister bike of your guys' (but the paint is original). Got mine for $450 with only 18,000 miles on it. Shes hard to start to but hasn't let me down in the last ~4,000 miles. They are great bikes even though they do have their quirks!
Ride on brother!
Excellent ride and job documenting it.
What a great video that was, really enjoyed it. 👍
That looked like so much fun!! That's the kind of riding I love in Michigan. If you want more breaks from Harleys I'll definitely watch more like this!!! Have fun guys!!
Looks like fun! Looks like your trip went well. I’m currently riding vicariously through videos like this. Thanks for posting.
Second thought. I feel for you guys having to drive through ATL. Especially in the rain. Glad you made it out alive. You earned another sub with this awesome video. Keep 'em coming!
I am in Colo. and have a 2002 Honda Gold wing. Been to Montana and Virginia. All over great bike. Glad you both had good luck with your bikes. You can go very long distances and get home. Good video thanks.🎅🏼🇺🇸🏍
Nice job boys. I really enjoyed the vid and the adventure. Be safe…
That was great. thanks for sharing
That was a great ride you took us along for, those old bikes performed great. I have also been disappointed with my GoPro's they have let me down too many times on long trips randomly shutting down and overheating. I just ordered a Insta 360 I am hoping it performs a bit better. Bought my GL1800 new in 2013 and its never let me down.
That had to be the adventure of a lifetime guys!!! I strongly doubt that this ride can be topped just based on the old, not in the best shape Goldwings you guys were brave enough to ride that far, plus all the other obstacles! But to take a ride like that with a great friend, makes it all worthwhile. Also this proves that you can’t beat a Honda no matter what shape it’s in!Awesome job guys! 👏👍
Awesome 😎 thanks for posting this. Very informative and interesting.
just a hint .. get plastic wax for the winshield.. it'll help in the rain and if buffed out good makes bugs easy to get off
My hometown is like 30 miles from where these guys started their journey, so cool!
Great trip and video, I am always impressed with people riding in the snow, not a big problem in Australia ... okay we have to deal with 45C (113F) :)
Even with the GoPro mishaps, the video turned out great. This was very entertaining and looked like a fun (and challenging) experience.
Cool running 👍😎 enjoyed the video, thanks guys
I Totally had Fun Watching This Video, What made it was ,whilst you both were driving, you both could convers with each other. OH and the Two Old Honda Goldwings were Bonkers, Ya can't beat those Comfortable Bikes to Do a Long Trip with...
Old Wings for life!
A trip full of lifetime memories. Please get some gortex rainproof jacket, pants, socks, and maybe some gloves. Insulated is great for cold weather but to hot for warm temperatures. Buy a couple of sizes bigger to wear layered clothing and you can ride in freezing temps, gortex will keep your hands and feet from freezing. You need a light weight suit for the summer time.
I was wearing extremely high end goretex believe it or not. It still didn’t hold up!
I envy you fellas other than the rain. At 76 I would have holed up in a motel. Real cycles riding down from Wisconsin. When I was young and dumb I rod Mt Harley 165 in sub zero weather an only newspaper under my jacket for wind protection. What a nasty ride. Thx 4 taking me along on your adventure
As someone who lives only 5 miles from key west (Iowa), and, coincidentally, has once, and only once, stopped at Dudley's Corner while in college at NIACC, I would have loved to join you on your ride. Great vid!
Great video. As an Alabama native I always have to laugh about the stigma attached to us. Everybody jokes about travelling through our fine state like they are going to be lynched by a crazed mob. I live right on the Gulf Coast and rarely see license plates from anywhere in New England. They are scared of us because they pre-judge us. We like it that way. I'll take it a step further and say that I don't give a damn what happens East of I-95 or West of I-5.
I must say that I'm pretty sure you two just made the longest beer run in history. I loved it.
Fantastic. I miss my old 86 Aspencade. Mine had the Markland running boards, which was rare for the UK. It did everything asked of it.
Awesome trip guys, this just further reinforced my need for a goldwing haha
Well now I have to buy a goldwing
Subbed . Great content guys. I have an 1985 limited edition Goldwing. These bikes are so much fun it's silly. cheers from Vancouver Island BC Canada.
Hello Vancouver Isle! I was on the Marguerite! I am a old BC boy in the cold cold east with 92 Suzzy vx800 ...:)
That was GREAT; I enjoyed the ride!!! I have a 2010 Goldwing, but not the butt that you guys have for those kinds of riding hours!!!
My kind of trip. Great time great video
As a Iowa boy who spent every summer in Alabama and the panhandle this brought a smile to my face.
Great video guys, I don't own a Goldwing as of yet but I am currently looking for one for myself, can't afford a new but I'm looking around for a nice used one, thank you both for your videos,, 🙏🙏
Nice trip! Can’t wait to do something like this on my Victory Vision this year. These touring bikes are amazing my vision is like a recliner on two wheels! I’ve always heard amazing things about the wings!
Vision is one of my dream bikes!
Just got back from Daytona Beach Shores, FL on my Vision. Done the trip many times on a two wheeler, several times with my Vision. Everywhere I go people comment on it. Like the Wing, The big Victory is just a great touring bike.
I bought an 82 in 2010 with over 100k miles on it. It smoked a little on startup if it had been sitting but cleared up quick and ran like a top. Loved the storage.
Seriously... that last comment was on my mind from the time you walked in to see Robert.
Your the first person to finally say something about that!
Great footage, loved the video.
Go Through WV sometime. You'd love the hills!
That’s the homie Jackson!! TBU! Also that was a well put together video! Congrats guys!
Ayyyy! #tbu
Love Goldwings man. They are great bikes. I ride an '83 GL1100.
Honda’s are bulletproof. Made my mega trips on a naked 750 but I was 21. At 67 I ride my Valkyrie now and then to the beach with no problems at all.
Hi Guys, a big hello from the UK here. Super-annuated Goldwing rider responding. Brilliant video, loved it all. You younguns nailed it for me. Subscribing as I write. Now just feel the need to import and try your 'Yeung Ling' brew...
Keep up the great work guys 👍🍻
Cheers! 🍻
good adventure. i watched the whole thing, the bikes did well; so did you guys.
Shit fella sure you don't have a little Canadian ya. Looks like weekend drivin up here lol. Just subscribe great video. 👍
Next time going through Atlanta, ride in the HOV lane, it is motorcycle friendly. Thanks for the video. Seriously thinking about getting a Goldwing next.
Hey guys that was me Mr Mile on the black gold wing that pasted u in Iowa!
I'm from mn
You were the first bike we saw on our trip! Nice bike!
I think he was the first and only motorcycle we saw until the keys!
I stayed in NASHVILLE THAT NITE TOO at cousin's than Tampa next day, than went to Daytona for bike week! Ya I forgot all about seeing u guys in Iowa! Nice video! U guys didn't stop in Daytona did u? U still have bikes or u sell them!
@@mrmile5911 we never went by Daytona. The bikes are still for sale just the trailer has been sold so far. I’m very surprised no one has jumped on either one yet. It’s still early for regular people’s riding season though
Das ist ein tolles Video. Es macht Spaß .
As an OTR truck driver it was super cool to see this trip done on a gold wing! I loved it I’ve been everywhere in the country and wanna buy a gold wing soon they definitely have went up but I found a 2002 with 20k miles for 6k
What a Great bikes..
1:17 😮 that was too long. But i like it 👌🏻 i congrats you both ... its amazing to see how the weather changes from place to another...you gave us opportunity to see all of that with joy 😊... so thank you for Sharing this episode...keep it up ...
I wish if could make the Episode's for like 30 minutes...and you can make it 2 Part's... thats in my opinion gonna attract more viewers to the Channel 💯...
I do enjoyed it
New subscriber
Greetings from Kingdom of Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦 🌴👌🏻
I love this. I have often thought about buying a cheap wing and riding it a good distance, then selling it for nothing on the other side.
absolult great one! Regards from Hungary :)
Really very entertaining.
Wow... The last time I was in Key West was in 1989. It definitely looks different in your adventure. I'm at the 39:51 mark. I hope the Pirate's Den is still there and you find it in your travels.
It's amazing how my Yamaha 1900cc Raider only gets 25mpg yet a 1800cc loaded down goldwing can double that mpg
Hey man, great video! Tossed you a sub! God bless.
Loved this. Watched the whole thing in one sitting. You guys have good energy, must’ve been buds for a while huh?
At times you guys reminded me of James Franco and Seth Rogen from Pineapple Express haha.
Jackson also kinda sounds like Patrick Star from SpongeBob at times, and you a bit like Kurt Cobain at times haha. Subscribed.
Also found the loading the bikes up with beer so funny, totally something I would do lol
Enjoyed the video!
I'm in key largo every other week we usually stop at the Big chill have a couple drinks and have a little something to eat.. WELCOME to Florida guys!
Excellent video !
You didnt introduce yourself to the doll😮😮 lol just got my first bike and just found your channel this looks like soooo much fun keep having fun
This was great!
Nice trip! Cool you two can do this together..... memories!! Would love to do that trip on my "84 Honda V65 Sabre! My buddy and i took a road trip to Colorado and Utah from Cincy last year to ski, of course not on bikes. Not that big of a deal except the fact we hadn't driven that far together in 35 years! Lol. I subed, will check out your other vids. Thanks!
It’s all about the memories! 🍻
Subscribed. This was truly great content, I need MMMOOOAAARRR!!! lol
That was a fun trip 😂 it’s funny that when y’all were in Tampa, you were in the parking lot of the Burger King I stopped at for dinner tonight! Small world
Great video
Gem of a channel!
So far I'm just 15 minutes in and I have 1 thought. You're gonna love that backrest. It'll keep you in the saddle much longer. Enjoy!
Not nearly a goldwing but im getting my first bike this week, a 1984 Shadow 500! Super excited to get on the road, id love to tour like this!
If we proved anything it’s that you can take even the cheapest motorcycle across the country. Don’t even hesitate to tour with that thing!
Excellent video
SUBBED. Great video fellas
great stuff yall, we just did a 2200 mile trip, always an adventure! yeungling is in texas now, but we used to do the same thing, grab as much as we could!
Cheers!
Man, that 1200 brought back some memories.... And it looks like you discovered the biggest complaint with the 1800: smallest luggage since the original GL1000.
The only time I ever went thru Atlanta without traffic was in 1973 on a non stop run from Key West to CLE., Ohio in a 1972 Vega. We hit the city limits around 3AM if I recall.
Honda Quality!!💫⭐️👍🏻🇺🇸
Definitely will make it!
