Five Things You Should FORGET About Anthrax

Поделиться

  • Опубликовано: 12 авг 2024
  • Thrash Metal deities, Anthrax, have been shredding guitars and ripping through bangers for headbangers for nearly four decades. As esteemed members of the Big Four of Heavy Metal, Anthrax have revolutionized heavy music in the mainstream, blended rap and rock before it was trendy, and have became a household name...which hasn't always been an easy one to have...
Although thrash royalty, the path to the throne has not always been smooth. In this APTV exclusive, Scott Ian and Charlie Benante reflect on the bad album covers, whacky fashion choices and rushed records of the mighty Anthrax-the stuff they'll omit from their inevitable Rock Hall induction speech and the cringe-worthy missteps they would like you to forget about.

    1. The Fistful of Metal cover is the coolest thing I have seen.
    2. The pink Anthrax logo is smart.
    3. State really isn't that bad - it does feel rushed but it's still a unique album with atleast 4 or 5 songs they should play live.
    4. Their style was still better than how they dress now.
    5. The anthrax scares gave them free publicity at a time when no one cared about them...
Anthrax (specifically Scott and Charlie) have always been too worried about their image - just do you, guys 😔

Why would anyone want to forget the shorts? Picture this... a cold November night in the North of England... opening band was Testament, who came out in typical black jeans and t shirts. Then this goofy bunch of lunatics came out it in outrageous Bermuda shorts, guitars covered in Ninja turtles graphics, NOT caps... and they were awesome!!! A complete breath of fresh air, and the crowd loved them. Newcastle City Hall, Friday 6th November 1987. To this day one of the best gigs I’ve ever seen.

That's why I got into them when I was like 14 and smaller than every kid in my school. My best friend introduced me to them, and then it was just like the floodgates opened, and we were way into Thrash throughout our time in school together. I just remember hearing Among The Living for the first time, and just being blown away. It was the first Metal album I ever bought actually. But yeah I 100% agree they have that light-hearted vibe that is missing from a lot of Metal.

I liked Anthrax' skater phase. I was in 7th grade at the time, and them wearing Jammz onstage was really cool. Yeah, they were the only band doing it, and they had a sense of humor about them that was different from the other thrash bands. I love Persistence of Time, but to me they just kind of joined the ranks of all the other bands and stopped being their goofy selves

    • @WhyTheHorseface
      @WhyTheHorseface 5 лет назад +6

AGREED. They were fucking cool as shit because they could rip it up but they wrote songs about Stephen King and Comic Books and were into skate stuff and punk and rap and comics and were giving the finger to anyone who said "dress like this, write songs like that, fit into this mold". Then they fucking just became another shitty metal band. I tried to like them into the 90's. But the songs weren't there and the image was gone to shit. Even now, with the wearing all black and the pentagram logo and scott's dimebag wannabe facial hair it's just wannabe bullshit. but i do like the new records. and i buy all their shit. even tho they are chodes.

Mos def! I know a lot of people, including the band, rip on that particular album n their career but SOE was and is still a great album and is the first album I ever listened to from Anthrax around 89 or 90 and is what made me such a massive fan for the past 30 years or so (hard to think that it's been that damn long!). If not for that album, not sure if I'd become such a massive fan or not, so I hate when I hear them or anyone put that album down but at the same time, I know there's legitimate reasons for them to not like it as much but I've always loved it...from the opening of "Be All, End All" to the damn end of "Finale", I've always loved every track!! It was my first Anthrax album and can't imagine ever not hearing it at all, sad to even contemplate that. Lol. Love that band and there music for me through some very rough patches and events throughout my life. 🤘🤘🤘

I personally think the whole colorful image was their main downfall. I applaud them for going against the grain from all the other metal bands. But 30+ years later, people still think they are the lamest of the big 4 and would love to replace them. Those people are wrong. Because they kick ass, but I don't blame them for thinking it.

State of Euphoria is still my favorite Anthrax record; always has been, and likely always will be. If it was truly rushed, that doesn't come across to me in the material at all. Perhaps it was a happy accident? Maybe obsessing over details and perfectionism doesn't give the best result, or at least wouldn't have at the time? Because I think it's brilliant. It's tight as fuck with brilliant hooks, creative songwriting, great and relatively timeless topics, and it was FUN. They weren't taking themselves as seriously, and it worked in their favor.
Persistence coming out immediately thereafter seems to help to highlight this point, with it seemingly being much more of a serious, darker record that they went over with a fine-toothed comb. And as much as I dig that record, too (lots), SoE is better.

I can definitely understand their point with State of Euphoria. It was a rushed album. I can totally emphasize with that feeling of shame and such for putting out a product when you know you can do better.

Alternative Press oof. I'm pretty sure his favorite band is either Metallica or Slipknot. I can't decide between Black Veil Brides and Set it off. If I ever get to meet any of the members of either band I think I would probably have a heart attack because I live them so much lol

Ok. Just to show you how lousy the art of 'Fistful of Metal' is..I first saw that cover when it came out and all I saw was a fist smashing INTO a guy's face (like a regular punch), not out of his head. It was only watching this video right now that I've heard what it is supposed to be. WTF....

Speaking of bad 80's album covers...nobody ever seems to notice that on the cover of Master of Puppets, the middle row of cross tombstones only has the top of the cross on the first stone and every other stone down the middle line is missing it and is just an uppercase T.

I walked into the Riverbend in Cincinnati to see Judas Priest and I heard Anthrax playing , but I thought it was just the CD playing through the PA system until I looked up and saw it was actually them . They were opening but it wasn't on the ticket and nobody had mentioned it. I was surprised even more because I didn't know they'd got Joe B back on vocals. It was pretty cool , reminded me of 1980s .

The first Anthrax album I heard was Spreading the Disease in 1986 (little late to that one), but I absolutely love State of Euphoria and fall into that “outside” camp, it just feels really consistent and solid, oddly enough, where I feel an album like Persistence is a bit wonky.
