11 Greatest Drummers Ever: Anthrax and Pantera's Charlie Benante Picks
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 28 сен 2024
- Charlie Benante is one of metal's most respected drummers, from his 40-plus years in Anthrax to his recent gig behind the kit of the newly-reformed Pantera. The guy not only knows how to play, but he has a near-scientific understanding of what makes a rock and/or metal drummer exceptional. We asked him to pick who he considers the 11 greatest drummers of all time, and he traced a line from the Beatles to Metallica to Dimmu Borgir.
Watch his picks above and let us know some of your top drummers in the comments below!

Bill Ward is probably the most underrated drummer of all time. FANTASTIC drummer!
Bill was very Big Band! 🤘🔥🤘
@@kristophertibbets5986 totally. He contributed to the black sabbath sound. Free and jazzy, yet laying down the groove
No.
His contribution on the drum composition in War Pigs is so unique and historical in an amaze way! 🤯
He's on my list of most underrated with Ian Paice.
Always nice to hear some love for Clive Burr. His drumming in Killers and NOTB is a work of Art. And he was a machine live.
Absolutely! I've always preferred the original drummer in any band. Even Rush; Megadeth, etc.
He never misses a note playing live.....true legend 🔥👍👏
Had a real feel for the song 🎵
Yes. Clive was a machine gun.
a fun fact about The Prisoner is that it was Adrian Smith who was playing drums for fun and find this masterpiece intro
This man is doing Vinnie proud on this Pantera tribute, he is absolutely amazing playing Pantera , thank you Charlie
Charlie is like a technically superior version of Vinnie.
If Charlie was the one who died and Vinnie were alive, Charlie would still be a better drummer.
I love Charlie but I don't think Vinnie would be very happy about it at all. He repeatedly dismissed the idea of a reunion without his brother and now with both of them gone, arguably the core of Pantera, it just feels wrong. If they were to market it as a tribute and go by a name which reflects that I think it would be far more respectful.
A hundred percent correct.
I hope the Abbott brothers are watching and enjoying it as much as we are!
Ian Paice from Deep Purple will always be my favorite drummer. Just incredible!! 🥁
Does Charlie wipe his chin with toilet paper 🧻
Bill Ward, Neil Peart, Vinnie Paul, David Silveria, Bun E. Carlos, Mick Fleetwood and Ray Luzier are some of my favorite drummers
@ghost mall Actually, I only own a few Cheap Trick records but he just always stood out to me as a drummer! I do need to check out more of their material though.
Bun E Carlos taught me how to drum in 1980.
Drums till Death
Great picks
Love Neil Peart AKA The Professor!!
Ian paice, cozy powell Steve Smith Neil peart, Tommy Aldridge Denny carmassi Danny sepherine.
0:16 - Ringo starr (The Beatles )
1:47 - John Bonham ( Led Zeppelin )
3:11 - Bill Ward ( Black Sabbath )
4:38 - Keith Moon ( The Who )
5:47 - Alex Van Halen ( Van Halen )
7:16 - Neil Peart ( Rush )
8:38 - Terry Bozzio ( Frank Zappa band/U.K./Missing Persons )
10:06- Clive Burr/ Nicko McBrain ( Iron Maiden )
11:24 - Les Binks/ Dave Holland ( Judas Priest )
12:25 - Nicholas Barker ( Cradle of Filth/ Dimmu Borgir )
13:47 - Lars Ulrich ( Metallica )
Thank you!! You saved me 15 minutes that I could never get back!!
Was happy to see the AVH mention and even... Lars. Metallica was never my band, but they didn't get put on the map with some slack drummer. Lars is essential to their early success and then some. Sue me.
Love for Bill Ward 👏👏👏
ringo by default .. jesus ...anyone heard him playing live without the backup drummer?
Someone can be your favorite but not necessarily the best. It's just your own personal preferences. I like Stewart Copeland from the Police. He's pretty good but not the best. Same with Dave Grohl.
The drums on "Children of the Grave" are just fantastic - Bill Ward is an often forgotten player.
Speaking of great old school drummers , Thin Lizzy's drummer Brian Downey is probably my favorite. Great sound and great beats and super tight fills with lots of great hi hat work incorporated. People always go on about the twin guitars but my ears where always nailed to what Brian was doing.
Love the sound of Downey :D
Yes, I totally agree. Deserves a big mention for how great some of their material was and a superb live player too
I'm sure I will get laughed out of the comments section for this but the drummer for Def Leppard is quite literally the only one armed drummer I know who has been doing this for as long as he's been doing it. Having his arm ripped off did not deter him whatsoever from fulfilling his dream of being a drummer. He retrained himself to play almost immediately and I am so very proud to say Rick Allen is one of a kind.
Facts! Just a beautiful story with Rick carrying on and the band not missing a beat....literally! Amazing footwork from Rick Allen!
Rick is really good
It's amazing that he's still playing with one arm. Just like Bethany Hamilton, the girl who continued to surf after a shark bit off her arm. Doesn't make him one of "the greatest" though, which he wasn't even when he had two arms.
You should listen to the first album by Def Leppard.. on through the night Ricks drumming is amazing I think you'll change your mind 🥁
@@markgreene6349 I've listened to that album many times and he's great. Still don't think he's one of "the greatest" though.
Great list with many unexpected but earned names. I feel Alex Van Halen is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time who was just over shadowed by his brother of course.
Dude turned 60 a few days ago, playing Pantera full set, looking great, what a great drummer!
he was in a photo with rex brown. rex is is 58 - 2 years younger than charlie. yet rex looks 10 years older - he looks 70. and charlie is 60 - yet he looks 10 years younger. that's what smoking and drinking will age you faster
Wait. What? 60? No f' ing way!
@@redhotmoon1656 yes---60...he could pass for 45...
Man's aging like Ringo
@@BRIANDER100 easily
Charlie is a great drummer. I'm glad he mentioned Ringo Star and Alex Van Halen. They inspired me also in my journey into learning to play and being creative. Thanks Charlie for your awesome musicianship and hope you continue to have a great career 👍
Charlie, YOU got me into metal. Among the Living is what broke my cherry 🍒. Must have been around 10 years old when that album came out, & it blew my mind forever! 🤯 Thank you Charlie.
Only missed Mike Portnoy on this list. Totally agree on Nicolas Barker and the fire drums on espesially Dimmus Puritanical euphoric misanthropya album. My Dimmu Borgir favorite to. And happy you gave Lars some credit👍 And not forgot Burr and McBrain🤘 You rock pretty good yourself🤘
All solid choices from a great great drummer and its nice to see Les Binks getting props for his pioneering work.
What a sincere dude. And I love his picks, 1-8 is exactly what I'd pick.
Charlie is such an awesome Musician, besides great Drummer.
I would have added, Cozy Powell, Tommy Aldridge, Peter Criss, Scott Travis and Ian Paice🤘🏻
Bill Ward is a horribly underrated drummer. Thanks for including him Charlie.
no he's not.
thats what i was gonna say lol
Charlie will go down as one of the greats. I’m glad he’s finally getting mainstream recognition
I always loved Mick Tucker from Sweet. Great drummer that was able to play different styles of drums. Just listening to his drums on "Set Me Free". Classic and so underrated.
Same here. Mick Tucker was a phenomenal drummer and one of my early influences
74 year old Carl Palmer. That man is incredible
Love your observations about Ringo, you are so right on. And Rain, forget about it. From 1963 (I was 15) to 66 his drumming was on the radio 24/7. It was the most wonderful 'brainwashing' of drums and harmonies. I dreamed it at night.
The thing I loved about Bonham was how perfectly he separated his right foot from his right hand.
No matter if he was doing quads with his foot or counter rhythms with his right hand, the separation was perfect.
The only other Rock drummer I ever heard who could equal that was Gary Driscoll, Ronnie Dio's drummer before Sabbath. The fastest foot I ever heard and saw. Separated accented 32nd notes.
Nobody had more of an influence on my drumming than Gary. He could do things with one foot I couldn't do with double bass.
And Keith was so syncopated in the 60s when drummers were into that syncopation. Keith, Mitch Mitchell, Ian, Clive Bunker, etc.
When Jean Luc Ponty left Zappa and went solo, on every album he had a different great drummer.
Awesome Charlie! Love how you had Lars in. Like you said Lars on those first 4 albums blows my mind. The fills he plays are incredible! For over 30 years I've always admired Lars' playing. Keep Rockin' hard! Love what you're doing honoring Vinnie and Dime. They would be proud, keep Rockin' hard Charlie! 🤘🥁🤘DC
Great choices for sure man... I love the comments about Alex VH with his new kits for every tour - so true. He was the first to have that "double - size" bass drums too... The comment about Neil Peart is so awesome as well - the "Tom Sawyer" fills are the absolute best and I can totally see Charlie and his friends at dinner at Sparks Steakhouse or something playing the fills with their silverware on the plates - so cool... Kind of weird that he didn't mention Scott Travis or Mike Portnoy - but hey, great commentary from a great drummer - thank you Charlie.
Great list of drummers. I like the inclusion of Ringo. One of his greatest strengths was that he was as steady as a metronome, no small feat. Two other rock drummers that I think would be worth including would be Ginger Baker known best from Cream and Yoshiki from X Japan. He ran a marathon on his double kicks.
This is one of the best of these that I've seen. He's actually providing much more commentary and depth, rather than just, "I really like so and so. They're great."
I'm so happy that Charlie brought up Nicholas Barker. He is THE reason I fell in love with Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir. That man doesn't get enough credit! Can't wait to see Charlie with PantetA WOOOOOOOOO
For me Vinnie Paul is my favorite drummer ever. He not only had ability to always write the perfect drum parts for Pantera stuff, but he was a damn metronome. Always had booming drum tone and kept groove like no other.
Charlie himself is literally the drummer that made me want to play drums 35 years ago
His playing has always amazed me and to see him doing the Pantera gigs now is mind-boggling to me he is doing so good at it
Charlie definitely is one of my musical Heroes
Hi Charlie, hope you read this! You are between the best that you've mention. I agree with you on every drummer you mentioned there. I'm sure we can add some other great ones too, but no need! Those are all awesome! You have contributed so much for Metal that many of us sometimes I feel you just don't get the credit you deserve. But to me, you are! You are and should be an inspiration and remembered at the TOP as an Incredible Drummer and Riff Master that helped shape and put Thrash Metal on the Map! I have met you before and hope to do it again someday because you are not only one of my top all favorites, but also an extremely humble guy that loves what you do! So cheers to you brother! See you on the next Anthrax Tour, and certainly with Pantera. Rock on!
Thank you Charlie to include Clive Burr as for me it is one of the greatest hard rock drummer.
I would have add also Chris Kontos as he hit so heavy and has his own style
Oh yeah Chris Kontos...BME is one of the best metal albums ever recorded. Also Eloy Casagrande
I love Charlie's drumming. I really enjoy when he's sitting in that groove pocket and keeping Anthrax songs ramming home. 🤘🤖🤘
Ian Paice and Bill Ward are my favorites. Some of the intros that Ian played , Pictures of Home for instance, blew me away
Thumbs up for Ian Paice!
Ian Paice and Cozy Powell and Lee Kerslake have old school feel for miles.
They have everything that Vinny Appice doesn’t (and Vinny’s drumming vocabulary works perfectly for that kind of really measured ‘marching’ metal feel of so many Dio songs, I wouldn’t want it differently with all those machine-gun snare fills and the endless Ting Ting ride cymbal 1/4 notes, it’s his very own.)
Great picks! I'm a Finnish drummer and Neil Peart was my biggest inspiration. I'm very glad that Les Binks gets a mention as well. He's got that real fluidity and groove in his playing. Sometimes it reminds me of Neil Peart. For example, they both often use the opening and closing hi-hat (while hitting it with a stick at the same time) to accentuate their drumming.
I'll just add some of my favorites to the list. They're not in any particular order:
Michael Giles
Phil Collins
Bill Bruford
Alan White
Cozy Powell
Bobby Rondinelli
Mikkey Dee
Richard Bailey
Ian Paice
Vinnie Appice
Carmine Appice
Barriemore Barlow
Charlie Benante
Steve "Doc" Wacholz
Kirk Arrington
Lee Kerslake
Tommy Aldridge
Scott Rockenfield
Gar Samuelson
Here's a few words about my history with Anthrax:
I listened to all kinds of hard rock and metal as a kid in the 1980s. As the 80s progressed I gravitated towards thrash metal and Anthrax was one of the coolest bands. I listened to "Spreading the Disease" a lot. I remember hearing songs like A.I.R. and Gung-Ho for the first time and being amazed by Charlie Benante's drumming. The album also had some very melodic metal tracks like "Medusa" for example. Mimicking that insane laughter in the intro of Madhouse was also a popular thing with my friends.
Some other songs I really liked was "I am the Law" from Among the Living. That song also has one of those cool Anthrax moments when they play a riff with a really fast tempo and then in a slower tempo after that. I loved it. That whole middle section (with also a great guitar solo) has some of my favorite playing and drum fills. It's so frenetic and perfect in its style. I listened to the first Anthrax albums from Fistful of Metal to Persistence of Time quite a lot but then I found the 2112 and Caress of Steel albums by Rush. I had to hear more... Listening to albums like "Hemispheres" blew my mind and I was mainly into 1970s progressive rock after that.
Some lyrics spoke to me quite a bit, like "H8 Red". The last lines of the lyrics end that song perfectly. I started to pay attention to the lyrics much more and Rush was also a perfect band for that later. It was metal bands like Anthrax, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Queensrÿche etc. that really made me listen. So, thanks for the inspiration.
Underrated what happened to Carl Palmer
@@mikekeeler6362 I'm glad you mentioned him. Carl Palmer is one of the best. I forgot to add quite a few great drummers. Take care and enjoy the music.
Most of your favourites are on my list - Charlie, Ty for helping to bring PANTERA back to us - Vinnie and Dime would be proud. No other drummer would have fit for the band or for us fans like you do. Cheers
That’s a solid list Charlie! Thanks for sharing. My Top 11 favorite Hard Rock/Metal drummers are:
1. Michael Giles / Bill Bruford (King Crimson)
2. Neil Peart
3. Bill Ward
4. Jimmy Chamberlin (Smashing Pumpkins)
5. Brian Downey (Thin Lizzy)
6. Johnny Kelly (Type O)
7. Charlie Benante (who that?)
8. Clive Burr
9. Jerry Gaskill (King’s X)
10. Sean Kinney (Alice in Chains)
11. Stephen Perkins (Jane’s Addiction)
I'm a big fan of Dirk Verbeuren, now in Megadeth, but especially his work in Soilwork. Not only the speed, power, quickbess, and complexity, you would expect, but also diversity, creativity, and subtlety. He doesn't just play verse part chorus part repeat, he builds his drum parts throughout the song to fit each song and the progression of each song.
Great video. I do miss Tommy Aldridge in the video. He must have been a source of inspiration too for Charlie. But I get it he can’t name everyone that would make more than 11😀 Charlie is a legend, can’t wait for the upcoming Anthrax album. Keep it going Charlie 👊🏻⚡️👊🏻
Great list and many of them are on mine. Here are a few others that I absolutely love:
* Nigel Olsson - Elton John Band. He played so many styles on "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". He was one of the very first drummers I really paid attention to at the tender age of 10! lol
*Bill Ward - Black Sabbath. Man, the absolute power and taste this guy has. I would spend countless hours in a class room playing that little drum riff from the verse of "Hand of Doom" with my pencils.
* Joey Kramer - Aerosmith. The first 4 Aerosmith albums are iconic moments of hard rock and Joey was a HUGE part of that.
* Brian Downey - Thin Lizzy. Jesus Christ, this guy is an amazing drummer and so overlooked it's criminal. I'd give my left nut to find a drummer like him to form a band with.
* D.H. Peligro - Dead Kennedys. It took me a long time to discover punk (1986) but when I did, I was blown away by this dude. Extremely tight drummer. It is a shame we lost him last year. RIP
* Matt Cameron - Soundgarden. His playing on "Badmotorfinger" "Superunknown" and the severely underrated "Down on the Upside" albums is right on par with vintage metal greats of yore such as Bill Ward.
* Charlie Benante - Anthrax. It's odd, but I didn't get into Anthrax fully until I got into my 50s. Charlie's playing made my jaw drop and to me, he is THE drummer of the 4 Horsemen of metal bands.
Lombardo and Peart for me. Two of my favs. Charlies a great guy.
Ian paice cozy powell Steve Smith Danny sepherine Neil peart Tommy Aldridge
You are absolutely one of my top ten favorite drummers in the world!! You’re playing has just gotten better and better. When I first heard worship music I was blown away. Keep up the good work Charlie!!
Hard to see a greatest drummer list without Charlie on it, but only because Charlie is reading them.
On the Blast Beat, Charlie don't Cheat!
How is he cheating? He was one of the first to deploy the blast beat in SOD's Milk off their 1985 Stormtroopers debut. Also Eric Brecht (DRI/Hirax) and Mick Harris (Napalm Death) were early pioneers and further developed by Pete Sandoval (Morbid Angel) into a more complex and brutal technique later deployed by all extreme metal bands.
@@rushshukla4636 He say "Charlie don`t cheat".
Charlie is as big of a fan as we are. Really cool dude to hang with. I had coffee with him and Mike Portnoy years ago. It was fun. He wore a RUSH t-shirt.
#1 COZY POWELL...I realised that all my favorite albums had Cozy Powell on the drum.
7:22 Neil Peart
So nice to see respect for Bozzio. That guy is still killing it live. His work with Zappa and Missing Persons elevated both bands.
Yeah I was hoping he'd mentioned Terry Bozzio. So far I'm not impressed with his pics where's Carl Palmer?
Bozzio also drummed for late 70s prog-rock supergroup trio U.K., which also featured future Asia singer/bassist John Wetton and Curved Air, Roxy Music and Jethro Tull keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson. Totally underrated.
Great ambassador for music, thanks, like listening to Bill Walton talk about basketball breaking down techniques of different players and coaches, the passion and appreciation for the art really comes through, thanks again
Charlie is a GOD. His playing is so unique and powerful. True inspiration
Great choices Charlie and, yes, you are up there for me. I would add your pal Mike Portnoy, Mike Mangini, Robert Sweet, Greg Bissonette and Jerry Gaskill.
My top 10. Ian Paice, Clive Burr/Nicko McBrain, Mickey Dee, Dave Lombardo, Stephen Perkins, Phil Rudd, Bill Ward, Mick Tucker, Paul Fergerson, Mike Bordin
I'd say at least 80% of his list matches mine, though I'm surprised no mention of Lombardo. My additions would be Mitch Mitchel, Stewart Copeland, Ian Paice & Charlie himself.
Ian Paice, Cozy Powell, Carl Palmer, Leonard Haze, Denny Carmassi, Carmine Appice, Vinnie Appice
Really intelligent and insightful clip with some great picks.
I always loved Anthrax. The first time I heard the song “Only” I decided I HAD to learn the drums! Charlie is incredible!
What about : COZY POWELL. IAN PACE . TOMMY ALDRIGDE . LEE KERSAKE. PHIL RUDD. PHIL TAYLOR. MIKE PORTNOY etc..?
Great list Charlie - Special mentions.... Vinnie Paul, Ray Luzier, Danny Carey, Tim Alexander, Dave Lombardo, Charlie Benante & Stewart Copeland
Lars is a great drummer. He developed his own style, a very, very good sounding style very early. It’s possible he was influenced by Bill Ward, but Lar’s style is so Lars. Maybe it’s simple, I don’t know, but he has a great sound and more important he knows when to play, when to hit a note.
Some things are simple others not.
Some stuff he could live also back then werz not easy as they look.
Add a great physicality to it.
Even he paid it.
Lars knew very well what he was doing yes
Huh? Man, you gotta learn your thrash drummers if you think Lars is even in the top 15.
@@bcg6760 So Charlie Benante has to learn his Thrash from YOU? I doubt it, son.
@@bcg6760 flying from Europe, Lars in the US was probably the first guy that set the ball rolling of that type of drumming, before the others radicalized the approach first after.
Charlie your one of the best!
Love your list! It’s really hard to narrow it down to 11!!
Cozy Powell, Carl Palmer and Alan White/Bill Buford need a shout out! Thanks…
Great list! Got to meet Charlie many years ago at a Tower Records in Yonkers NY of all places. Super cool guy. For myself I’d like to add Dave Lombardo and the late Kirk Arrington from Metal Church to the list. Kirk’s drumming on those first 3 metal church albums is amazing!
C'omon Charlie, Lars couldn't hold your broken drum sticks! I know you're being modest here but...Lars out, you in
Well Charlie I can say this. I always admired your drumming, but now that you're with Carla, you are kind of my hero.
I'm surprised no Cozy Powell or Ian Paice? no worries, still a great list ! cheers!
Phil Ehart as well, considering Anthrax covered Kansas.
Top 11 punk rock drummers? You are one of my favorite drummers, style influencers. Thank you.
Am younger so some of his early picks I am not familiar with but for me Lars gets SO much hate. Lars's double tapping is insane, Alex Van Halen is just a monster, the great Vinnie Paul's drumming took for me drumming to an entirely new level, VP to me is just insane. Tommy Lee I'd add only for his early drumming and his innovative rig set ups which really one could argue they are all bells and whistles but drumming upside down aint easy I imagine. 'The Rev' to me was another insane drummer who's never really mentioned. So many great drummers are forever lost, as are iconic generationally influential guitarists. A great video from Charlie.
Les Binks is one of the most underrated foundational metal players; great to hear him recieve some recognition. Awesome intro to “Exciter” on Unleashed in the East.
Charlie Benante has always been in my top 5 metal musicians, as a drummer that is also a guitarist and lyricist; your input towards Anthrax’s music is inspirational.
Shout outs, respect and thanks from Australia, cheers
Dude I met you guys outside MSG on the Somewhere In Time Tour. We were talking for like 30 minutes before I even realized you guys were Anthrax.
Charlie rules. Finally getting some long overdue recognition 🔥
I have always loved Lars' style. It *fits* Metallica's music *perfectly* .. And that's all that matters.
Nothing else matters
@@macadoo2530 lol I had put nothing else matters at first but I thought the pun was too much 😆.. now I wish I had.
Excellent choices..his comments shows his passion
You're so underrated , I hope he's gets recognized more after doing this Pantera tribute ... He's a legend
Hell yes you're on my top 10 metal drummers list. Among the Living and Persistence of Time were amazing. S.O.D. Speak English or Die was a crossover game changer for a lot of us growing up in that period of time. I definitely remember your drumming made me take notice. Thank you for all the great music!
My favorite all time drumming performance is Josh Freese on the album "13th Step" by A Perfect Circle. Josh is a session drummer (NIN, Guns N Roses, Paramore, Sublime, Sting, Foo Fighters, Weezer) but his drumming on that APC album is masterful. To any young drummers out there I highly encourage you to listen to at least the first 3 songs on that album, and pay attention to how his role is oriented towards making each song better, not just making the drums sound better.
As a drummer Charlie is by far one of my biggest influences, as well as Anthrax in general. Really cool that he mentioned Nick Barker, that dude is insane. He plays lightning fast, and doesn't makes mistakes live. He was Cradle of Filth's best drummer when he played with them in the late 90's, although Martin is an awesome drummer as well. I think another one who falls through the cracks is Bill Rieflin. Him playing with Ministry and RevCo was alwasy great, then went on to play with REM and King Crimson. That shows how versatile he was.
Seeing Anthrax NFV on VHS inspired me to play drums. I emailed Charlie in 99 and asked who his top influences were and now I'm seeing the list expanded! Mind blown.
Charlie Banante #1
Honourable mentiones:
Vinny Appice
Cozy Powell
Gar Samuelson
Vinnie Paul
Phil Rudd
Mike Smith (Suffocation)
Dave Lombardo
Steve Moore (Australian)
Mercedes Lander!
Yet another established and well respected drummer giving props to Lars. I think I’m going to take their word for it about Lars. Not some 50 year old still holding on to the 80’s while playing with his pud living in his moms basement
So good to see someone give props to Bill Ward, definitely my favorite drummer
Fair play this is the best fave drummer selection on youtube charlie has got it spot on
Tom Sawyer, air drumming that breakdown fill, you nailed it, much respect always!!
You are a master on drums, Charlie. And above all, a great person. Thank you.
One of the best drummers lists ive seen so far.
It’s awesome to see such a great drummer himself give his list of who he considers great. Have loved Charlie and his style for years. Very underrated. Charlie is 🔥🔥🔥
Lars catches a lot of grief, but I think his drumming on Justice is masterful. I can listen to that album for the drums alone.
The things he does on that album don't make sense to me at times. He knows what you expect, so he changes it up and messes with your expectations. I'm not even a drummer and I've worked on learning those drum parts mentally.
Easily his most technical but I think my favorite drumming from him comes from The Black Album, especially cause the tone is so good
@@JimVincent It's an old joke but sometimes you really do have to listen to the notes they aren't playing. Master of Puppets has the same qualities.
From what I understand, and correct me if I'm wrong. He has written most of anthaxas' song. So to hear a drummer talk about how he hears music is cool. It's like Dave grohl. Super under appreciated as a music maker. He's been doing since Among the living. As far as I know
Can't believe he didn't mention Peter Criss. Just one listen to his drum solo on Kiss Alive proves that he was an amazing drummer with jazz flair.
The funny thing is Adrian Smith goofing on the drums and that was the intro to the Prisoner. Clive Burr was awesome!
Nice list! There's so many great rock and metal drummers it's hard to have any definitive list. For me though, I'd go with this list...
Bill Ward
Bill Bruford
Neil Peart
Gene Hoglan
Sean Reinert
Steve Jannsen
Gavin Harrison
Danny Carey
Thomas Haake
Matt Gartska
Bernard Purdie
Simon Phillips
Vinnie Paul
Martin Lopez
the perfect list, RIP Niel Peart, thank you
Charlie so right on with all your pics
Bill lordan who played with robin trower was amazing with a great feel, Dave Lombardo gotta get a mention also
Fantastic list. And yes like so many other drummers I've seen talk about Bonham, he had such a unique, distinctive sound.
This was a great view into your mind and influence(s) as a drummer! Thank you for this video!!! I am not a drummer, some of my friends are drummers and among them, I can name at least four! And they inspired me to want to learn to play the drums myself. However, if I were to offer a list of pro drummers that I love, would include the Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Rush drummers as you mentioned. Then I would have to add Ron Bushy (Iron Butterfly), in as far as earlier rock/metal. Then it gets into Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Gene Hogland (Dark Angel), Bill Andrews (Death), Kirk Arrington (Metal Church), and YES!!! Honest and true! Charlie Benante (Anthrax)!!! Re-listening to Persistence of Time, State of Euphoria, some of your double bass runs were at the speed of guys like Tim Yeung (Divine Heresy), but much earlier!!!! The into and progression for the song, "Nobody Knows Anything" is absolute madness!!!! Just to name a couple off the cuff. Spreading the Disease was my first Anthrax back in the day. As my youngest son would say, "so yeah"... You are definitely Among the Living... I mean, List!!!!
I got ahold of Attack Of The Killer B’s when I was 9, set me up for life on drums, underrated album playing wise! Still listen to this day, thanks Charlie!
Just the fact that you can compliment your influences without your own ego getting in the way is so admirable. I realize Bernard Purdy wasn't a hard/metal rock drummer...but damn, his influence on other greats like Jeff Porcaro just can't be overstated👍
He influenced Mr.Bonham as well because Mr. Bonham always said how much he enjoyed listening to rhythm and blues.
CHEERS
Purdie
100% on Nick Barker. Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia is GODLY.
I was almost sure you were gonna mention tommy aldrige and you are on my list since 1985 and you are still on it i try to play that blood eagle wings bass drum part 😮 youre a genius love your playing forever everytime i see your name on a album i make sure to buy it and never deceived thank you Charlie for being Charlie we love ❤️ you Québec City 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🤟🏼🥁🥁🥁👏👏👏🔥👍
No Ginger Baker? That guy was phenomenal. Clive Burr/Nico McBrain was a surprise, but they were great. I didn't expect to see Lars Ulrich in your top 11 either. I love his work on... And Justice for all. I love your own work on among the living, Persistence of time and sound of white noise. 3 great thrash albums. I love Igor Cavalera's work on beneath the remains and Arise. Dave Lombardo is another of my favourites. His Slayer work is outstanding.
Great list. A couple drummers I can't speak for as I'm not a fan of all the bands represented in the list, but the majority if them I agree with. Especially Bonham and Peart, my personal favs.
In no specific order: you, of course!! And Jason Bittner, Sean Reinert, Jay Weinburg, Dave Lombardo....I'm stuck...lol...the greats you mentioned too- Ringo, Moon the Loon, Bill Ward, Alex Van Halen, John Bonham, Neal Peart and of course Vinnie Paul!!!
Charlie is the man. Just saw him again on their tour with BLS. He never disappoints. I love hearing who expert musicians were inspired by. Their opinion holds more weight than most.
Great picks Charlie, I've been playing Bass for 35 years and one drummer I always dreamed about playing with was Brain Downey of Thin Lizzy, very under rated and very rarely mentioned. Brain was one of the first drummers to have a massive kit, double kick drums and he could play any tempo and style. From the start of the 80's Mark Zonder (Warlord, Fates Warning...etc) is also one of my favourite prog drummers beside the Professor who will always be Number 1. The late Nick Menza was of your era Charlie but boy what he bought to metal from 1989 onwards was on an energy level and creativity level for his style that most drummers of the time admired.
Nick Menza on Rust in Peace....just wow.
