I still have one. It's broken. I've taken it in countless times to repair it, but it keeps crapping out. But it's never going to be something I scrap for parts because of what it is. I figure one day I'll sit down and learn how to solder and understand the mechanics and just do it myself.
Sounds like your repair shop might just be reflowing the solder with a hot air gun.
A temporary solution which can sometimes fix the problem for a short while.
Unfortunately these early PS3s also suffer from GPU issues unrelated from the capacitors mentioned in the video, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth trying to replace them!
Get it to someone who can replace the rsx with the slim ps3.
1 day ago... Seriously? People still think this is the problem? I doubt those tantalum caps are even a good enough alternative, the original nec/tokin are more similar to polymer caps. That'll fail in 2 weeks.
As I said in the video, this is what worked for me, and I’ve been using it for over 6 months without issue.
I’m happy with this solution, doesn’t mean you have to do it.
Because it is not only GPU rsx failure that can happen and cause ylod to your ps3. Here after seeing 2:52 it works for 5-6 seconds i can clearly say from my experience that this particular console for sure Had bad rsx NEC tokins problem. If ot will be a bad GPU then it should Die and ylod in 3 seconds.
SYSCON
its not tokin caps its dying gpu substrate
It’s a combination of both
@@Pendleton115 It's the GPU in like 99.99999% of cases.
@@jm036 Replacing the capacitors clearly got the unit up and running again, I’ve been using it for over 6 months with no issues.
Yes the GPU will likely fail sometime in the future but if you ask me getting an extra few years out of my console is worth it before having to get out a BGA resoldering station.
@321bandzai @jm036 actually in this case it is indeed rsx NEC tokins failure. At 2:52 you can see it works for 5-6 seconds after he pressed power button. If that console would stop working after 3 seconds after pressing power button then you guys would be right. 3 seconds to ylod after pressing power button means bad ( cold solder balls ) under cell or rsx chip or faulty rsx chip that needs replacing.
Looking forward to the update 👍🤩
Great tutorial but misleading title since I don't see a PS2 in the video
But it plays all PS2 games in HD :)
PS2 is inside of this ps3 😊( actually this ps3 really Has 2 consoles inside )
I sold one with this issue after reballing with no luck.😢😢😢😢. Spent a year to find another. Will be sure to do this repair if YLOD appears.
As a PC gamer I run a dual monitor setup and I also got a stack of ps2/ps3 games just waiting to be played so I bit the bullet and got myself one of those launch ps3 consoles. One of the best purchases I have made ngl and the console runs like a dream after owning it for about 6 months
Nice repair
If anyone here is thinking of doing this repair on their own especially WHEN they don't have any soldering exprience whatsover then please don't.
The PS3 mobo is a quite thick and absorbs heat like a mf. You will also need a pre heater for this, prying capacitors is very risky and heat tape won't protect the mobo from the slip ups that might happen when prying.
Also I'd recommend delidding the iHS on the Cell and RSX and applying new paste on the die themselves. (Only for experienced technicians because you can crack the die and completely trash the ps3).
Lastly the YLod is a GPU failure like the 360's RRod (which wasn't rrod but only three bars) the only long term solution for the YLod is GPU replacement, the ones from Slim PS3.
Finally, he made a game for the PS5.
If you update to newer firmware they run smoothly and quite
nice video but you should do also deled for every cpu
Hey man thats a great repair. I've always wanted to fix my CECHE01 Model ps3 ever since its gotten the yellow light of death. I know the methods of extracting the error logs through syscon but have zero soldering skills or experience. What would you recommend a beginner like me could start learning to solder?
Also just ignore the haters in the comments. They clearly skipped the video and missed the part where you referred to rip felixs video which said the ylod has several causes.
Honestly this is probably a great repair to start if you’re new to soldering!
It’s quite straight forward as the capacitors are large. Would definitely looking up some introductory soldering videos that show you the basics of how to use flux and soldering braid and then give the project a shot! :)
If your console makes ylod in like 2-3 seconds from pressing power button then you have problem with bga under cell / rsx or you have a faulty rsx chip itself. But if your console stays on green after pressing power button for 5-6 seconds and then ylod just the same like in this video at 2:52 then you have very big chance to fix it by replacing rsx capacitors like in this vid.
Is heat the main cause for cap failure on these models? My 60gb still works. I try to keep my room as cool as possible when I use it.
Heat probably doesn’t help, however it’s mostly just poorly designed capacitors that fail with age.
The og ps3 had faster blurays than ps3 slim. It would load slightly faster
Is that the one with 4 USB ports?
Crk.
Sure is!
so are we just going to forget about the ps2 now?
The whole point is that it can play every PS2 game :)
@Pendleton115 I know that but imo playing games on their original console is the best way to play a game.
@@R-E-D-A-C-T-E-D. PS3 is an entire PS2 just installed onto the PS3 mainboard. So it’s as close to gaming on the real thing as possible :)
