    If the Joker's wife was so terrified of her husband that the cops faked her death so she could escape him, doesn't that mean that he was always the Joker? Doesn't it mean that his dump in acid was just the push he needed to give in to the monster that was already inside him? That's how I took it anyway. Great review btw!!

      It's a little hard to say. There could be some details left out in the origin that we as readers/fans might not know about. If I had to put a theory, I wanna say his change in career and not making anyone laugh was probably what began to drove him insane to the point he probably tortured his wife, only to come to realization and back off. However, that was just enough to put his wife on edge that she needed to get away from him, then leading to worse day of his life.
      I only say the whole torture thing because we know that the family was struggling to make ends met and she wanted him to be happy or so I re-call. So him snapping out at her in violence would make some sense, but again it's only a theory. Although I wonder if we'll ever see a "Son of the Joker" where somehow the survived son ends up taking on the mantle.

      We still don't know his name nor do we know the origin of the other 2 Jokers, we don't even know who was the original Joker. We just know Killing Joke is the definite Joker from this point on. Even though each Joker represented different eras in Batmans career, (1940's Joker, Silver age Joker & Killing Joke) they all seemed to share the same memories and take credit for each others work. It's pretty clever actually.

A man that can look his parents' killer in the face and not only forgive him but save his life. Then when you think that's beautiful he takes it to a new level completely unforseen. Something you'll probably never see anyone do for their parents killer. Be at his bedside with him when he dies. Mr. Wolfchamp...Comics, as you know, are representative to their time period. For example, in the golden age, Batman had machine guns on his Batmobile, and killed. Which is why I don't get all the hate for the movies like BvS, and Man Of Steel. There were times when Batman killed, and there were also times when things between Superman, and humans, were not so good. But, like you, I prefer a more pure Batman, a hero, without powers. Which is desperately needed in modern day comics.

      See, I get the point, and I totally understand it, but at this point it's simply getting ridiculous. This makes, what, the fourth or fifth storyline in the past decade where they try to put huge emphasis on the Joker's identity and they tease the whole "we'll find out who the Joker really is" in each one? Then they never reveal it, with the statement that "Joker's identity doesn't matter", only to bring it up again in another arc like two years later and starting the whole cycle over again. It's becoming repetitive as hell.
      If Joker's identity doesn't matter, then voila, it doesn't matter. Stop writing stories that revolve around it, have this one be the last one, and move on. But consistently bringing his identity up over and over again in multiple different arcs as a major plot point really kinda implies that his identity DOES actually matter.

    Three Jokers really focused on the Character development of Batman, Batgirl and Red Hood. The growth in character from Jason after he sees how Barbara kept her wheelchair, along with their sparked love interet was awesome! seeing a deep dive into her struggle was powerful and straight up tear jerking. plus finally seeing Batman move on by saving the life of his parents killer and being with him in his dying moments, like woa hella powerful. My only complaint is I wish they could've downplayed Barbara as a dougheyed sexual interest a bit, even if she is a goddess. This amazing character growth , ( AND AMAZING ARTWORK BY JASON FABOK AND BRAD ANDERSON, I MEAN SERIOUSLY THE COLORWORK IS NEXT LEVEL) are the reasons these books will be felt in the Batman world for years to come!

    The only thing the ending proves is that the killing joke is canon as one joker origin. We still have no orgin for the other two and the other two are older . The Comedian is from the 80s . The Clown is the silver age joker of the 60s. The Criminal is the golden age joker of the 40 50s . He is the oldest

    • @jaym8988
      @jaym8988 3 года назад +34

      From how I understand comics, a joker from the 40s doesn't make him 70+ years old. A story from the 40s could have been two years ago in comic years. That being said, the Killing Joke Joker could have created the other two, but the story made it seem like the 40s Joker could have been the original, just as much as the KJ.

    • @Chris-qr1io
      @Chris-qr1io 3 года назад +11

      Even if a 40s story is two years ago that mean everything else in the comics still takes place later after it in the timeline. The comics are still chronological. The older comics happen first and the newer comics happen later . So unless joker is a time traveler he can’t go back to before he was born and create more of him . The very idea of the three jokers shows them as different ages . One is clearly a lot older than the others the Criminal is the oldest

    • @Chris-qr1io
      @Chris-qr1io 3 года назад +10

      I think it is canon but not sure . This comic is really confusing people a lot and the problem is the last issue. The second issue makes it very clear the Criminal is the original he even tells Robin he is the first joker and he was in Gotham before Batman was even Batman. Then in issue 3 suddenly they have the killing joke Joker saying he doesn’t know who made who . It’s pretty obvious the criminal is the oldest and the original joker from the 1940s. Batman even say at one point the Criminal looks exactly like the first joker they met. The killing joke is the modern Joker . He can’t be the original because the 1940s joker is already the original and way older. Another reason is the killing joke shows joker falling in acid after he runs into Batman and gets scared. So Batman already exists before he turned into joker. The Criminal on the other hand has no orgin and and he was just joker from the beginning. He says he fell in chemicals at one point but that happens before Batman even meets him. So one Joker fell in chemicals long before meeting Batman while the killing joke Joker fell in chemicals after he met Batman

It’s hard to build upon Jokers story further without having a solid backstory to work from. I’d prefer he has no orgin but if he has one make him supernatural immortal make him The Pale Man from the endgame comics. This Criminal at least has mysterious past and he is the oldest anyway. It doesn’t even make sense to say the 80s joker of the killing joke is the original

    • @misterriktus151

      The Killing Joke story is canon but not for the comedian. He was imagining the criminals origin as his own. Bats confirms the criminal was the 1st he met n only confirms the part about having a family. The comedian still has no back story he just going back n forth like when he said he beat jason with a crowbar...that was the clown. So we are left with a Joker who is still a mystery. Man I loved this issue but I dislike that jokers wife is alive because she was simply avoiding him bc she was scared of him, that just doesn’t feel right to me. I liked the original origin in killing joke where joker was a good man and husband in the past who was just trying to find work to support them, but his wife’s death turned him and his sanity to the way side. I liked the aspect that joker was truly loved in his past and that it was stripped away from him, and that is what destroyed him. I always felt joker’s wife should always be his one grip to humanity, but since she’s dead then so is his humanity. I also loved how in killing joke she was supportive of joker despite his failing career as a comedian, and that is what it made it so tragic that she died. Joker’s one thing he loved, gone. The one thing that truly loved him, gone. Joker’s humanity, gone. Joker’s past, gone. All that remained once she died was every bit of him that she was not. All that was left was a miserable, intelligent, angry, and viciously bitter comedian. Then dropping joker in the acid was the last straw, the final push. The birth of the joker as we know him. I always liked how his killing joke origin mirrored Batman’s, Batman lost what he loved and plunged into his insanity by becoming a bat costumed hero. Joker lost what he loved and turned into a insane clown criminal.
    I dislike that this comic has joker as a more abusive husband that his wife avoided and left. That just doesn’t sit right with me for his origin. However maybe that sorrow of his wife never dying and just leaving will give joker some extreme pain and even more insanity when he finds out. Taking the love out of joker’s origin may just make him even more tragic if a villain and even more of a psycho. And what about his kid?! What’s gonna happen with that?!Who knows, either way this issue definitely leaves me excited for what’s next

In my opinion, I like the backstory of him being a normal struggling commoner with the tragedies keep happening leading him to be the joker. Just like what u've said, I also like the wife being supportive to joker. When in this issue turns out she was scared of him the whole time - just not feeling it. If there will be a sequel to this, idk maybe showing the wife's change of heart is because of their financial instability. Like having reason of her leaving the pre-joker because she realize that love won't guarantee they could eat a meal 3x a day or they won't even have a feast for birthdays of their son or something like that. I think the fact that Batman knows who the Joker is, and his origin is the one we saw in Killing Joke, confirms The Comedian is indeed the original one since he was the one having daydreams of his wife and child.
    I don't know how I feel about this story- my first thoughts were that it was somewhat underwhelming and didn't feel like something that was worth hyping up for years. Why would the Mobius chair say there were three Jokers when in the end Joker does have a true name and defined origin, one that Batman ALREADY KNEW?
    Having three Jokers turned out to be as unnecessary as I feared it would be. The Joker has had different motivations over the years, he's obsessed over different things and his crimes have varied dramatically depending on writers and what era of comics he was in. In Batman Arkham Asylum a Serious House on Serious Earth, this aspect of the Joker is explained by him having his own special brand of insanity where he changes how he is depending on his needs. I much prefer that, rather than just saying there was one Joker who is about certain things, and he made two other Jokers who are about different things. Rather than one unpredictable character who continuously reinvents himself deliberately, it's now just three characters with different ideals-- and then two of them die. They essentially streamlined the Joker and his motivations, which for some might be a good thing, but to me I like Joker being unpredictable.
    Confirming Joker's origin also felt unnecessary, idk that I ever needed that to happen.Again, it streamlines Joker and removes some of the mystery of the character.
    I didn't love how Barbara Gordon was used in this story. She's just kinda there. I also don't love how they made her a love interest for Jason. We've already seen her as Dick Grayson, Tim Drake, and even Bruce Wayne's love interest over the years- can they not think of anything interesting to do with her besides being a romantic foil for one of the Bat-family dudes?
    I did like how Jason was characterized and was happy they incorporated how he's really separate from batman and the main Bat-family (even tho we only saw Babs and Bruce). Again tho I didn't love the romance with Barbara, and it felt weird that he just really really wanted to be with her here. I know what they were going for since both he and Babs have Joker related trauma in common, but still, I can't say I loved it.
    I did really like the Joe Chill part of the story. Joker going out of his way to actually have Bruce resolve his anger and vengeance towards Chill so that his origin would no longer be the biggest trauma of his life is really interesting, and probably the best idea here. I'm just not sure it required three Jokers to tell that story.

      Really great post, didn’t agree with it all but the very end I simi agree with. Resolving Batman’s hate towards Chill didn’t need this kind of story.
      Side note. I do think Jason and Barbara would be good because they were tied so close together from both suffering from the Joker and going two completely different paths and I think it would be awesome to see those paths meet one day with an amazing writer

      The killing joke joker is one joker. We still have no orgin for the other two and the other are older. Silver age and Golden age comes before modern age . The killing joke is modern age so it’s impossible for him to be the original. The Criminal even says he is the first and Batman even says the Criminal is the first joker they met . The killing joke joker is also a complete different joker . How is this hard for people to understand.

    • @SpoonDude
      @SpoonDude 3 года назад

      @@Chris-qr1io

      I get that the Criminal is said to be basically the golden age Joker which implies he’s the first and original... except Batman says he knows who Joker is and it’s the one with the killing Joke origin- aka the Comedian. He said he knew that within the *first week* of meeting the Joker. The Comedian is the one who’s wife faked her death and is in hiding with their son. That has to be the original Joker since he’s the one related to the wife, and Batman knew about them since pretty much the beginning.
      They also never definitively give a timeline for when the other Jokers were created, so just because the Comedian Joker is the one of Killing Joke and Endgame and other later stories, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible he’s the original.
      If the Criminal Joker is supposed to be the original that created the other two how do you reconcile that with the confirmed Killing Joke origin Batman knows Joker has had since the beginning? Because that origin wouldn’t belong to the criminal, it applies to the comedian.
      And anyways this is all besides the point because I’d rather have had just one Joker with an unconfirmed origin, who himself changed and evolved over the years, than three jokers who exist to explain Joker’s change in character in the dumbest and most unnecessary way possible.

    • @brandonangstman
      @brandonangstman 3 года назад

      I'd like to give a different thought on the other two jokers origins. Let just say that for the sake of clarity that the killing joke joker is the original, what if he created these other jokers and through manipulation and brainwashing gave each of them distinctly different personalities based off his own at varying times in his life? The criminal being him at the beginning: focused, objective and cunning but still unhinged. The clown being him at the middle of his career after being foiled by Batman many times and made a mockery he begins to loose his focus and becomes less the challenge compared to the other villains making their appearance at this time, he can't get batmans attention from being just an ordenary bad guy so he further embraces the clown motif. Then as his gag crimes become less and less a challenge for the dark knight he evolves into the joker we know today, cunning but unfocused, a twisted humor but also a need to maintain the spotlight. The killing joke joker is the two others blended together. I think he created these two as a way to throw Batman off his game but what he failed to account for was that the same personalities he set in these two would become so dominant that they each believed themselves to be the original. When they started to be to hard to control and threatened to usurp him with their plot,he through his own cunning hatches the plan to use their plot for his own purposes. I think this joker just found a way to kill two birds with one stone. I think it makes sense for him not to waste the opertunity to mess with batsy.😂

    • @Chris-qr1io
      @Chris-qr1io 3 года назад

      If that’s tru then the joker is ruined as a character. He should not have an orgin or family. I get what you’re saying have the killing joke be retconned into the early 1950s and he brainwashed other to think they are him . That’s very overly complicated. I’d prefer the joker be a mystery no orgin at all. The Criminal is old old joker who has no orgin. The Clown another joker with no orgin. The killing joke joker is already ruined by having an origin

    It's not official that Killing Joke was actually his origin. It only shows that he may have suffered from some Split-Personality disorder.
    We all know The Joker's suffering from a split personality. The question is, did he always ? Or did it start because of the acid vat he fell into ? When he was a regular human, did he *genuinely* believe he was good to his wife ?
    Or did he know he abused her and just forgot about it because of his... "condition" ???

    • @aladdin8236
      @aladdin8236 3 года назад

      But it is official isn’t it? Because the panel we see of the officers helping his wife flee from him isn’t something he would know about, it’s something Batman knows about. So we were seeing a flashback from Batman to the point in time where his wife dipped on him ergo killing joke is canon

      @@aladdin8236 What I'm saying is that what we saw in Killing Joke is a rather... "happier" lie than the painful reality that we see in Three Jokers.
      In reality, Joker did abuse his wife. But that's not what he THINKS. Whether he understood what he was doing at the time or not is a different question, but the reality is that deep down, he knows something was wrong there, hence why when he was daydreaming in issue #2, they were afraid of him.

      @@daniellevy8935 I agree with this. The Killing Joke--for how twisted Joker is in that story--made his past self very tragic and someone who did care about his wife, but was suffering from constant pressure. The Three Jokers makes him look more like an abusive husband, which contradicts the previous belief. It's possible that Joker THOUGHT he was good to his wife because his mind is so messed up, but he simply wasn't, which would work well for the whole "identity crisis" he was known for having in the comics. Not sure how that explains there being two other Jokers, but eh...

    The Joker believes it only takes one bad day to turn someone into a monster like him, because that's what happened to him, but this is wrong. It didn't happen to Jim Gordon, it didn't happen to Barbara. Yes, Jason came back a wreck, and Harley broke for him, but you could argue Jason was already screwed up, and Harley was guided as much by compassion for him as she was her growing disillusionment with the world around her.
    The fact of the matter is, the Joker was always one step away from breaking. It didn't occur to me during that conversation with his wife in the Killing Joke, and I don't think it occurred to a lot of people, but he isn't only frustrated with his life, he's actively intimidating her, using her meager attempts to comfort him as a demonstration of disappointment. He's gaslighting her because he feels judged by her, so he lashes out in dramatic fashion and then plays to her sympathies to keep her from leaving. I am certain that the comedian is the Joker who broke his psychiatrist with only a few conversations, so this kind of thing is totally within his wheelhouse.
    He may not have hit her or tried to kill her with acid or anything, but he's already a psychotic narcissist with a talent for manipulating people, and his anger is building. He already believes the world is rotten and cruel, and it's confirmed every day he carries on.
    Batman was right, it's not the world that's ready to snap, it was always just him. He was ready to become the monster, he's just half assing it for his family, because as awful as he is, he wants that small remnant of normality that comes from having one. This is reflected later when the criminal walks in on him playing house with his mannequins.

    The meaning of the joker card: In Euchre it is often used to represent the highest trump. In poker, it is wild. However, in the children's game named Old Maid, a solitary Joker represents the Old Maid, a card that is to be avoided.
    The joker is no longer just a symbol of chaos. But a story of perception. The joker is a man built of ones own demanding for destiny. His life destroyed. His feelings cast away in a shell not of his own. He was avoided and cast away.
    The joke is not the fact that the joker lost everything anymore. Its that the joker was pushed away from everything he ever wanted. Pulled into the darkness. Much like Bruce was pulled into the darkness after Joe Chill killed his parents.
    His parents killer redeemed, deceased. Batman is aware of the fact people can change. The perception has shifted. There is no cowl. There is no lie. Only the blurred line of bitter sweet truth and that my friends is the real killing joke.

Also there is no reason why not to ask the chair for the identity of Joker since he’s the only one that knows, so he was testing the chair to see it’s credibility, Joe Chill being the killer wasn’t a true test, as Batman brushed it off and said “yeah yeah Joe Chill” then asked the question that only he knows, so that’s the true test to the chair and to his surprise it says that there are three jokers not just the one he already knew, again he kept it secret to save joker family from ever being exposed.
