I’m really excited to see the restoration process of this build. 🔥
Excited too! Tons of not so fun work ahead though.
You picked a diamond of a car for your project. Indestructible, and fast enough. Love the video 🙏🏻
Thanks! 👍
Great video! As a Porsche shop and Speed yellow 996 turbo owner found this video very entertaining. If you need any help / insight / parts along the way feel free to reach out! Keep up the great content
Thanks! Can you find me an OEM bumper? Lol
You cleaning the interior brought back so many memories of when I was doing that on my first car... Keep up the great content!
Will do, thanks!
So much work ahead, but super gassed to see you get into it Matt!
Thanks! More work than I can foresee lol.
Man every step you took was the exact same step I took years ago on my 92 C4 Vette.. it's a good start and a good way to see the car somewhat come back from an abusive owner.. I think you'll have a solid are eventually...Good Progress!!!!..👍🏽🏁
Thanks! Going to take a lot of time any money but the end goal is a super clean DD 911.
Just started watching your channel. Excited to watch the end results!
" Like throwing a hotdog down a hallway" LMAO!!!! Nice that the MAF fixed the dash lights, looks like the oil leak is going to be a bit more work. It will be worth it in the end. Still can't get over how amazing the LS E36 sounds!!! Keep up the good work Sir!
Thanks! Yea the LS sounds great....with no mufflers lol.
Loving this series. I’ve had a 996tt the last 8 years. Great car!
This one isn't great, but I'm going to make it at least good!
this editing is really good, man. great work.
Thanks! Takes soo much time to edit these so they aren’t super boring.
Love seeing people work on their Porsches. I’ve recently gotten my first (986 Boxster S) and hope to someday gain the knowledge and confidence to work on mine 😂
You'll learn as you go, give it a try!
Just found your channel and really enjoying your content and style!
Love the 996 as well. I know many Porsche fans don’t like the 996 generation, but as someone born in the mid 80’s, they are the quintessential Porsche to me.
Thanks for the support! I think the 996 is starting to grow on people, and it is for me too! I was just staring at it in the garage, though it's not very nice (yet).
Your content is way too good for the lack of people that get to it. Keep it up and Keep the Grind!! It will be worth it for sure! Both the car and the RUclips progression will happen with time, especially with your fantastic content! Keep it up!
Thank you for the kind words! I will have a 996 video coming out this weekend!
I think this is the build that will make your channel take off!
Hopeful for that! But so far, not lol. Very little views on the 911.
I started watching the video before seeing the views and the subscribers... and by the quality of your video I thought u were a really big channel! Good Luck on the build, I,ll be here waiting excited for the new video. SUBSCRIBED
Thanks so much! I love positive feedback, but also reminds me how small my channel is...lol.
Very entertaining video yet again! Can’t wait to see what’s to come in the future for the Porsche. I was browsing around earlier and came across your old Colorado on my neck of the woods. Very cool! May have to trade in the jeep for it 😂
Yea I traded it in near Baltimore lol. See it listed for $45k.
Good content, keep it like this forever! Don’t change.
Thanks and I won't!
Excellent video. I bought one that needed a bit of work. All was surprisingly good value including a full official Porsche sports suspension
I wish mine was a good value....lol
Really enjoying this series. The smoke smell will haunt you. I had a 1991 Corvette with same issue. The headliner and visors are notorious smoke holders. I tried an ozone machine and replaced headliner, visors. It helped a lot but there is always that hint of smoke especially on hot days.
Surprisingly, the smoke smell is mostly gone. But you may be right, heat could change that.
Im having issues with misfiring with my 986, will definetely take the MAF sensor into consideration considering ive had new coil packs, spark plugs and filters etc!
This model was one along with a 996.2 C4 that I considered before I took a plunge into the Porsche world. I currently own a 997.2 C2S. I see why it is so easy to fall head over heels with the 996 Turbo. See prices go up about 20-30% since 2021 in Southeast Asia as they quite rare here even more than the 997.1 TT which is quite plentiful here.
It’s amazing with just a little more care that Car would have so many less problems even just a simple stuff I’ve had cars three times older that were in so much better shape. Good luck with it! Gonna follow the transformation
Thanks, and true!
Matthew! May the force be with you… this is a challenging endeavor, but i hope you get it to a point of driving satisfaction !
Hell when you get a million subscribers you can get yourself a brand new 992 turbo!
Ha! That's the dream!!
28k subs plus a new one from me. Can’t wait to watch this Porsche restoration.
Thanks for the support!
I can rarely watch YT videos all the way through but this was great. Nice progress man. I have a blue on blue 997 I saved from a similar fate. Been thinking about doing the exact same thing and buying the worst turbo I can lol. Subscribed.
Thanks for the kind words and support! I try to keep the videos interesting and not just me blabbing on and on.
GREAT! Love this stuff. We want more!
I've got three videos so far, I'm only 1 man lol.
@@matt13ross apologies, that came off the wrong way man haha
Nah no need to apologize! Lol
I’m loving this series. 996 gang
I’m glad the Porsche guys are tuning in!
Also you can pick up a small oxone machine and run it in the car and that does A LOT. I have a rat filled range rover and it was magical the difference.
Keep up the good work, i really like your Channel
Thank you for the kind words! Will do!
The zip tie on the shifter linkage is a good thing. They pop off regularly and the zip tie is the usual fix. If you want it 1000% better get a numeric shifter with cables. Just did a video on our channel with a comparison between other short shifters too
Hadn't heard of that, thanks! I'm happy with my rebuilt shifter itself, but may replace the cables in the future.
@@matt13ross I was happy with my Ben Auto Design short shift kit until I tried a Cayman with a Numeric shifter at Porsche club meet. Order 2 that night, one for my car and one for my dad’s 996 Turbo.
Cool video
I'm doing similar to my 996 Carrera 2 but you seem more handy than I am. Although... watching you take that seat out over the doorsill without putting a moving blanket or something down... Just goes to show nobody's perfect haha.
I did do the function first shift right kit myself like you did and I put in PCCM Plus and done a whole Porsche load of other stuff but it's nowhere near done, I'm not sure it ever will be. looking forward to watching you build this car, good start and an entertaining style of shooting.
Thank you! I felt confident enough pulling the seat without a blanket. It worked out fine lol.
This restoration caught my attention, and you just by being you got me to subscribe, can't wait to see how this baby turns out. Keep up the great work and yes those wheels are terrible and that interior is worse off than my 01 Jeep grand cherokee (modified) thats been dumped on its side lol. Some people are just nasty.
Thanks for the sub! It needs a lot of work but makes for good RUclips content at least lol.
Can’t wait to see the transformation over time. Huge Porsche fan 😁
Same, though this car is DAMN expensive to fix lol.
@@matt13ross lol, yep! Gotta love the German cars.
Love and hate!
Surprised to see another MD resident, cheers from Baltimore
Actually from PA, got the car from MD though!
Love this video!
Thanks, I'm glad!
Just found your channel & I’m glad I did. Keep up the great content 👍🏻
Me too!
Thanks guys!
A+ for your hard work
Thank you! It has been a lot of work for sure.
Amazing video!! Thanks,
Glad you liked it!
Really cool content - I am in! Cool car and its a manual - Like!
Away with the stache :-)
For bad smell in the car - afaik you can do an O3 (Ozone) Treatment. Heard that this can work. There are also devices to buy so you can diy.
I may rent an ozone machine in the future. I'm trying to get everything else fixed first.
Great video series
Glad you enjoy it!
Looks like a TechArt Viper front bumper. Looks very much like the Imagine Auto (Porsche tuner in KS) from mid 2000's
Stoked on this build👐
You should do ozone treatment to your car interior. That kills all the smells. I'm sure you can rent the ozone machine somewhere
Solid idea! I’ll look into some rentals.
Are you in PA? I saw the Wawa coffee cup. Be sure to come to the swap meet in Carlisle on April 29th. See you there! Keep up the good work!
Yup. PA. I just looked that up. Might come! Tons of parts I need
Nice project!!!! Looking forward to see the end result!
BTW- Those are NOT original Porsche wheels. I agree… they are hideous!
Make sure you use the ‘green’ tool to properly install the gear cables to the shifter.
Looking forward to it too! Yea, I hate these wheels lol. I do not have that green tool though, never heard of it!
Was waiting this video cleaning the Porsche!! In my opinion is so satisfying to get it clean and feel good of be in the car. saying as carwash owner haha
- 23:04 Should i keep the stache? - No, cause is not 22:44
Still not entirely clean, but much better!
Good opportunity to put on a gt2 front bumper (and gt2 radiator conversion if you want to get spicy) instead of the turbo one.
If I found a good priced one, definitely!
what a beauty! congrats!!
Thank you!!
@@matt13ross are those carbon ceramic brakes? or are the calipers just painted yellow? ;)
I have the same fabspeed intake and exhaust. Looks you have a but more play in the intake bracket than mine, but doesn’t look like it’s missing anything.
Roger, any ducting to yours?
Awesome content man, sucks that these were friggin $40-45k for a nice example just 5 years ago, good on you for chasing the P car dream brother!
I know! I wish I could have gotten one back then!
Good start.
Agreed!
Well done @matt ross. Check out dry ice detailing, may be able to go that extra mile for the interior detailing and getting rid of the nasties and smoke
I'd like to have the undercarriage dry iced, but haven't heard of that on the interior, interesting!
@@matt13ross biggest benefit you may be able to get rid of some of that nasty smoke smell too! good luck!
Yea I need that!
Subbed for this car!
Good, and thanks! Will be working on it this weekend.
is the exhaust normal ?? I kinda like the sound !!
excited for this next build !!!
Fab speed exhaust. Sounds unique for sure!
That front bumper is criminal
Absolutely lol
As a Porsche owner myself, I’m here to watch this 996 Turbo project.
Thanks for the support!
Haha, nice. Zip tied shifter linkage. Just like mine!
Apparently that's common? lol
@@matt13ross My linkage just doesn't like to stay clipped into the bracket that's on the trans. A tie works great haha. These cars are awesome when they're sorted. My '03 m96 motor failed due to cylinder wall degradation but I just got it to the shop for a 4.0l stroker build with all the fault points addressed. JE pistons, Nickies sleaves, ported and polished heads, higher compression, GT3 throttle body, competition plenum, headers, etc. Fully tuned with all the GT3 type bolts ons will put me at 400+ na hp with peace of mind. I can not wait.
Jealous!
Impressive work.
Thanks!
@@matt13ross by the time you are done the car will likely be twice what you pay (not that you should sell it). Dream car indeed.
Maybe not quite that much but certainly more than 38k!
I was waiting for ur video 😂❤️
Nice to hear!
“Ya i didn’t turn it off, it died” 😂😂
Dope man! Loving the content 💪🏼 keep it up 🔥
Thanks, appreciate it!
In 2017 I was highly considering buying a 996 turbo. Prices were super reasonable. I remember going back and forth on a 2003 turbo, black with full brown leather interior. 3 owners, ~36k miles, immaculate condition, seller was asking 37 or 38k. I passed on it because I was about to go back to school and I remember seeing the listing sit without any action for at least 1 or 2 weeks. To see what that price will get you in a 996 today makes me hate myself just a little bit.
You're telling me!!! So wish I would have gotten one 5 years ago, or even sooner!
Porsche's especially turbos have negative camber. Inside tire wear is to be expected on the rear. Also you will go through 2:1 or 3:1 rear to front tires because of the rear wheel bias and engine on the back.
Ah, solid info. I'll have to look up what stock camber settings are. This seems a little too aggressive but I could be wrong.
Nice! This is one of my dream cars... Just not in this condition lmao. Huge transformation so far!
My thoughts exactly lol.
Re: FAB exhaust you might find they drone at speed. I swtiched to Speedtech 2.5 inch. go for 3" if you like it loud and proud! Definintely not 996 CATs. probably high flow maybe 100CEL. They look kind of generic. Check to see if the coolant piples are welded or pinned. They are hard to see. The came from factory GLUED and can fail causing massive coolant leak. Mine had a CAI and it sucked. Wash car or heavy rain would containate the MAF sensor. Bought a stock 996 turbo airbox and it worked a lot better. Boost leaks are realy common with 996's. Enjoy they are great cars! The switch on left is because of Leman's race starts back in the day. You ran to the car got in, had to buckle up and start. You could get in start it, grab buckle and drive off. I like that's it's different. There are so many things you can do to the 996TT and make really nice power and handle amazing and still just drive it around town. Good luck!
I can't tell about drone because of the humming noise coming from...well something. Does the Speedtech drone?
Thinking about a stock intake, just have to find one that isn't over priced. Not sure on the coolant pipes yet, haven't gotten that far though I did hear of that issues.
Thanks for the tips!
@@matt13ross The Speed tech doesn't drone for me. Re: Intake good luck. Years back I got a new one with MAF from ECS tuning for a good price. I couldn't just get the intake alone. Enjoy!
I'm gonna check out Speed Tech for sure. Thanks!
If you use a steamer with a microfibre wrapped around the end and some Apc on the headliner, that should remove the smoke smell.
Good call! I need a steamer for sure. Wouldn't helped with the tint too.
Great series. Use an ozone machine to get rid of the smoke smell.
Thanks for the tip!
0:05 yepppp lollll
Hey boss, just came across your channel. I also live in MD. I believe I saw this listed for sale a while ago. Was it in PA?
I bought it in MD
Nice edit. That seems like a crank seal leak behind the pulley. I have mine off and am replacing soon. I'll post my fix on the Facebook group.
I might start taking top end parts off to take a look. Is it easy to get to?
@@matt13ross You pull the bumper and exhaust off. Uh I'll message you some pics from facebook
Awesome!
I like it
@MattRoss13 I may have missed it, but what OBD adapter do you use? Everyone says you need to buy a special porsche one to reset the codes on our cars. I've had the "Service" message on forever for oil change because I do it myself but have never reset the code. I also have to do a window reset for the driverside window because it it overextends sometimes and is annoying when closing the door. Good find and this will be a great project!
Hrm, not sure about the service lights but any OBD2 scanner will clear codes in these cars no problem.
@@matt13ross Ah, oops I meant the service message on car startup. Alright, much appreciated
You need to locate a donor car, it might save you some $$$. Looking forward to this project. I bite my tongue saying this, but I agree with the thought of replacing the wheels.
Man, I don't even know where I would find a donor car for cheap! Do they exist?
A little late, but fyi to remove window tink, spray it with 409 cleaner, stick plastic bag to the wet window and let the car sit in the sun. When hot, the tint will peel right off with most of the glue.
Yup a little late, but maybe I'll use that in the future!
Out of curiosity, when you put 33s on your old Colorado did it affect your speedometer and if it did, how did you fix it to read correct speeds?
Nope, because I had a tune that accounted for the 33s.
I noticed the car is awd (I don't know much about Porsche) when you were running it in the air trying to locate the noise. Then you went on to show the awful rear tires. Is it possible that the mismatch of tire wear is causing the awd system to bind up and make noise?
Possibly, I haven't dug deeper yet.
I subscribed just to see how this car ends up. A not on the smoke smell, it’s very hard to remove it from the leather which is where most of the smell is embedded. Chemical removal seems to be the most effective other than time but then again it may never fully spear out.
I could see me replacing the carpet and front seats in the future. I’d think the headliner has a lot of smell too. I’ll keep cleaning and using smoke remover stuff and hope for the best.
To remove tint use a black trash bag, stick it to the window and leave it in the sun for about 30min and it will peal off, easy peasy nice and easy. Good luck
Is the a 996 gt3 rear number in that faded yellow color and the front bumper at first looks a little like a gt2 rep with 991 style or something turn signals. Weird mismatch or parts for sure..
It’s an ugly aftermarket bumper.
Your bumper is from TechArt, its a pretty common Porsche modification company. I have a few cars with their parts. In general they are very good quality, but with age comes wear so Im sure that's why its lacking a bit.
A few others mentioned TechArt. I'm just not a fan, but yeah, it's probably worn out. But nothing seems to fit well and its just super tacky.
hello just found your channel!!! If you can get the european bumpers , the front looks like it needs replacing. The eu looks better than the us ones
I would like that, but no idea how to get a Euro bumper here.
I do not know honestly , maybe a site that imports them or someone that makes aftermarket bumpers that look like the eu ones
One of these just sold for 250k, get her fixed and enjoy her bro!!!
YIKES!! That's the plan.
Glad you found and bought this car, Matt! It badly needed YOU to basically restore it to OEM. You're right many, most, ALL of those modifications look terrible(Charles Barkley Voice). Looking forward to your future videos!
Thanks! It won’t be strictly OEM, but an OEM plus route is where I’m taking it.
Interested in watching this as have one myself
Gotta be nicer than this one lol.
@@matt13ross it most definitely is, needs repainting, but it has not been loved in its life, but mechanically needs little fettling.
Plenty of repair parts out there for seats and carpet too with good prices. Look around. R&T Magazine, European Car Magazine.
New carpet? That would definitely help with the smoke smell!
2:38 Uh oh! That blue puff from the driver's side is a sign of bore scoring.
I’ve also read that it’s pretty normal? Doesn’t happen every time.
@@matt13ross Let's hope it's not bore scoring. I think it's worth scoping the cylinders just to be sure.
@@matt13ross it’s normal if intermittent. Turbo Merger engines are not really known to have bore scoring. Fellow 996TT owner here and pumped to see what you do with it!
Could be oil separator
Respect for all the work you're putting into this crap car. Will look awesome soon the way you go at everything
Thanks!
I’m pretty picky about car content. You sir have a new subscriber
Awesome thanks!!
Get It Done! "Dakar" 911 and Hellrot M. :D
Ha, it does look a little like Dakar huh?
Speed Yellow 911
I know this video is a couple months old at this point, but if anyone else is looking to get rid of interior funk, an ozone generator can be very useful. Turn the car on, max out the fan speed, and let the generator go nuts for a few hours and usually the smells are reduced quite a bit.
I'm in need of that!
If you can get your engine out in under an hour, working on these becomes so much easier.
Cool idea for channel. Subd
Thanks for the support!
the seediest Porsche ever
Seediest?
Next time use a fabric steamer for the tint. It will come off in one piece and no glue residue!
Wish I had one!
Pa tags FTW
FTL, PA sucks lol.
Ozone generator for smoke smell and a lot of agitated vacuuming.
Did a ton of vacuuming and scrubbing, might rent an Ozone machine.
Love the process!
A tip, when you were under the car the music stopped me from hearing you speak. Better to remove the music in the future👍🏻
That was actually a software mistake. I always turn the music down but I tried an auto feature and didn’t realize it didn’t work 😞
Really interesting build.
PCM or PSM?
Not sure what they means! lol
Expensive VW !!
😂
Ok, so I am not a sports car guy at all, but this car is COOL.
Thanks! A unique car for me too!
