  • So I didn't actually set out to make this but things got a little out of hand. I'm actually making a video on the music theory of Joy Division to go along with my ongoing series.I was making short examples of what's happening with each instrument. And i got carried away with this one.
I'd already heard the great AI version of the song with vocals modelled on Ian Curtis voice.
    • Joy Division [AI] - Ce...
I used the same process, and I think different software.
The one problem is that to train this kind of thing you need clean vocals without reverb or distortion. So I went about splitting tracks using the excellent studio.gaudiol.... I used songs that had very little effects on the vocals. so basically nothing that martin Hannett had a hand in. I compiled these together, processed them a little cunning to make the voice more even.
Then I used Kits.ai to make a modelled voice. Like the first person who did this I used Thom Yorke's voice as the melody guide. The vocals are still a little glitchy in parts (I'm only using the free versions of everything) so frequency masking had to be used (it's lucky that a string machine was consistent with the theme.
Visual Wise I've used excerpts of the famous 'No City Fun' footage of 1970s Manchester
    • Joy Division - No City...
I've mixed that up with an interesting tour around the deserted Debenhams store in the centre of Manchester.
    • Exploring Manchester's...
    Anyway, enjoy.

if you told me this was an old missing tape I'd believe it.

I'll take that, thankyou. It was quite strange taking my instrumental and adding *his* vocal. It started out with me thinking "I haven't played guitar in a while". Things escalated.

even if the comments don't think it's an accurate depiction, it still feels sentimental to me for what could've been since they performed this but never released a studio recording under joy division. so thank you for this 🤝

Well, the pitch element is Thom Yorke. He's probably too 'good' a singer to actually capture the essence. You've nailed why I made this. I knew it wasn't real I just wanted a taste of what it would have been like if he'd lived just a little longer. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks.

Not bad! Do you think you could do "In A Lonely Place"?

You hum it I'll play it... It would be the obvious pairing wouldn't it.

AI Curtis' voice on Blue Monday!

Yes, but also, as if it's 1980, so 'Closer' production values... I think it could be a goer.

I'm not sure how I feel about AI Ian Curtis. My gut says, just because we can do something doesn't necessary mean we should?

It's Jurassic Park isn't it. You may well be right.

...I sure do appreciate the (hard) work and great effort put into this and send my compliments for creating the track itself...but why ..why jump on the AI (Ian Curtis / JD / NO) bandwagon?...why not add your own or someone else's real vocals to this and make it a special cover version and very personal tribute?....no hard feelings of course...just wondering...all the best...

I hear you completely and no offense taken. This was very much a case of mission creep. Believe it or not adding the vocals was an afterthought. At one point it was indeed going to be me. Then I heard the playback.
A big part of it was satisfying my OCD.

No idea how you did this but it's amazing. Somehow the idea of an AI voice seems appropriate to the whole feel of Joy Division☺️👍

It's kind of reassuring because it doesn't sound at all like Ian singing as his voice was not straight.

The base voice is actually Thom Yorke. He's probably too good a singer to hit the right/wrong notes.

Ok now make Ian sing Shellshock

I think there are people doing this with various new order songs at the moment.

I think that's what he was aiming for tbh. Banks not Ai Curtis.

    What's the point?

      To provoke you into commenting.
      And it worked.
But seriously, as I've already noted in the comments here this was a case of mission creep. The scientists thought too much about what they could do and not what they should, all that.
Funny thing is everyone's focusing on the ethical implications of the vocal element. For me this was just the topping on a cover I made of ceremony, overdubbing guitars for hours. The main point for me was playing guitar again. It had been a while. Things escalated.
