  • 4 Bmw 335i Reliability issues you should know about! If your looking to purchase a BMW 335i equipped with N54 engine, you might want to reconsider.
    I have owned a one for about 3 years and i can tell you that this car can be very fun but at the same time very stressful to own. I'll be breaking down 4 common issues found in the N54 engine model of the 335i. Hopefully with this guide I'll be able to help shed some light on potential headaches you may experience as an owner to this BMW.
    Don't get me wrong. I absolutely adore my BMW and would never consider getting rid of it. In my opinion the positives out weigh the negatives. The BMW 335i is a joy to ride. That said, it might not be for everyone.

      Your wrong it doesnt matter how long. If theres a recall and it hasn't been brought in for the recall. You can bring it in and they'll fix the recall issue. And if it comes with the 120,000 miles 10 year warranty they have to give it to you. It's a procedural thing and it comes with the recall fix.

    eBay has the valve cover and gasket together for $75, the water pump for $105, the fuel pump for $110, and the turbos are $655 (OEM) or about $850 for performance ones. So about $1,200 in parts just so y'all know

    • @MP_pov
      @MP_pov 3 года назад +14

      Ive been there and you absolutely should not buy a water pump or fuel pump for 100 bucks… not unless you want to replace both again in a year, or you want to get rid of a lemon and have no conscience. Proper Oem parts here in uk are 4x that price - each.

      one thing i'd add on here is the cam trays the metal rings on the cams and changing them to teflon due to them eating into the trays.

    I can agree if you plan on keeping the car stock those problems may seem significant, but if you are someone who plans on modifying and tuning their car, those issues are honestly no big deal in the scheme of things. A motor that can put our 700hp safely on stock internals is an engine worth a little maintenance.

      Hey N54 engine is amazing don’t know why you get so much Criticism.. It’s unreliable this that whatever.. I have one 2006 listen to this.. I had a 123d 2008 done a swap for a 335i 2006 with 96,000 on the clock with no service history or car history.. I had the car 2 years in July 2022. The only problem I had was ignition coil number 3 and 5, what blew by ECU, and that was my fault. I had a check engine light came on and I ignored it put it into sports mode put my foot down and blow the ECU.. and front two wheel bearings.. so far I’ve done 127,000 and it’s going strong.. remember I have no history on this car.. plus I have stage 1 map on it too..
      I think with these cars the problem is people do not look after them they use abuse them use cheap shit fuel do not put any additives to keep the car clean from inside. Remember being direct port injection the soot buildup is crazy so you have to use additives to keep it clean or CarbonClean or walnut blast.. I haven’t done either of them I just put a bottle of additives into the fuel tank every 3000 miles.. and I really do push the car.. remember if you do not clean your direct port injection that’s what causes the The failure of your high-pressure fuel pump.. so far for me it’s going good.. 😍😍love your channel bro you gave me some good tips….

    This is hilarious. I have a 2007 335i 6spd manual coupe that I have had since 2007. I have had to fix every single one of these issues. I paid $35K for the car. I have over $10K in repairs on it and some of the majors got covered by warranty, but of course the most expensive were on my dime. 2020 I still have it taking up a spot in my garage to drive about every 3rd weekend. Wife begs me to get rid of it, but still love it.

      I did the same thing, bought a MINT condition one at 120,000KMS back in late 2017 for a STEAL (only reason why i bought it) Since then i've changed the Valve cover gasket, oil filter housing, fuel pump, sparks and ignition coils, pcv valve, vacuum lines, you name it. It is full bolt on now and i just recently discovered my turbo seals are blown so im getting new turbos (Fuck my life) But for the price i got the car it's more than enough to justify the maintenance. especially if you do it yourself.

    I bought a very nice 335i convertible. It is fully loaded. After buying it literally getting on the highway and check engine light on. I’ve been trying to figure out what it could be, and it keeps going different direction. First I thought it was the HPFP, I then had it scanned by an expensive scanner, and there was nothing about that HPFP. It was reset and as soon as you open it up you get the check engine light. I get an erratic idle when it is cold and have video of it. I got s code for the exhaust camshaft solenoid. I took them both out cleaned the one and replaced the one for the exhaust. I went to start it in the morning after doing that hoping it would make a difference, but it was sputtering when I first turned it on.

    As a mechanic (and N54 owner) the number one mistake I see people make with this car/engine is they don't maintain them OR when 1 part fails they don't fix everything else that is going to fail soon. Example: Oil cooler seal. If your oil cooler seal is gone it takes your belt out and wraps it around the crank seal (everyone here knows that). The problem is if your oil cooler seal is gone your oil filter housing seal is going very soon and so is your valve cover gaskets. Now you're going to pay 3-5x labor (at $100+ hour) because you're going to let the filter housing seal go and then it takes your crank seal out AGAIN and then the same happens with the valve cover gaskets. Just do all the seals at once, they're all gone. It's so much cheaper than replacing the crank seal, belt and having to remove the fan and top engine cover multiple times. This all happens within a few months of each other and the owners think this car is horrible when it really isn't.

Not knowing the past maintenance from previous owners , I 'm thinking this model of car could be a " Money Pit " because of the cost of parts & labor ! It's so amusing researching BMWs. I was thinking about a few different BMWs recently. Almost everyone of them seems to have very common and very significant engine issues. N47 Diesels have timing chain issues. These have multiple issues outlined in this video.
    And you know what...ive been driving Alfa Romeos for years and none of their models have any engine issues like these BMWs. They just make much more reliable engines. But my god, when you mention that you own an Alfa to people they almost lose their mind wondering how I drive anywhere without breaking down. Its amazing what perceptions people have.
    I'm still considering an M135/140i but the reliability issues mean I will probably steer clear.

    • @VehicleVirals
      @VehicleVirals  5 лет назад +2

      Most speak without knowing. They hear someone say a certain car is unreliable and they add on like an echo effect. The 135i is definitely a fun car. If you want more tuning potential opt in for the N54 engine like I have or go for the more reliable engine in the later models, the N55.

    i had this exact problems 2007 335i and replaced water pump 130,000.00 km( 400 $), ,plugs,heater fan ,at 200,000 oil leak valve cover(250.$)door lock,when oil leak on belt it will damage the belt and break the cooling fan too. (300$),the car will shut down.radiator hose break down.But the car has 300 hp, 300 ft lb torque and will beat most cars on stand still acceleration .if you cut the exhaust and put straight pipes (380 $) you get a amazing not too loud sound and crackle with steptronic shift down shift . it is worth the repair cost.you can replace the rear tires with 285x18x30 will give a sporty look will cost you 1000 $ for the rim and tires.turbos run with exhaust gases called -by twin turbo. I had a problem in side the electronic shift had to take the gear shift cover out and fix the wires too. they are very flimsy.I have a friend mechanic who was fixing the issues in toronto with out rip off. parts are cheap and readily available for these 335i cars .

    Have owned many BMW's, including 3 E39 models and various 3 series including a E92 M3 and recently a 2011 335 sport package. My 335 had 155,000 miles on it and, after spending a small fortune replacing gaskets, etc. I had the infamous rod bearing failure that made the car, at 8+ years old and with that many miles pretty much not worth anything for a slug like me who is not mechanical. I am friends with the service manager at our local BMW dealership, and he told me a few years ago that BMW has serially been cheapening its drive train parts with each new model in an effort to cut costs.
    I NEVER EVER red lined any of my BMW's and am not really a GM fan, but we had a 2002 Escalade that sat outside for 17 years and had almost 300,000 miles on it when I sold it, and my last few BMW's have had 10X the mechanical issues with a lot less strain and better care. Also own a 2014 C7 Corvette that now has 30,000 miles on it and it has been flawless. I don't think I will ever own another BMW sadly.

    • @VehicleVirals
      @VehicleVirals  6 лет назад +23

      Ah ok. I'll tell you this, make sure your injectors are actually bad and not just misfiring from bad spark plugs and coils. They tried to rip me off once at the BMW dealer by trying to charge me around 4K for brand new injectors because 3 misfired. I changed the plugs and coils for around $100 and problem solved, no more missfires.

    • @smeltelf
      @smeltelf 6 лет назад +9

      Good advice. I'm going to do it myself. Ordered a k+dcan cable and installing INPA so I can go through my codes. I know number 3 is misfiring so I can swap the coil pack from one that's not and see if the misfire follows. That's def cheaper if it's coils and plugs for sure.

    Hi bro, considering a 2008 335 coupe with 110k on it and a 2009 4dr with 60k on it. They have similar price around 8K. The coupe have some replacements listed here:
    Jun 2015: 6 fuel injectors replaced, Brake replacement
    Dec 2017: Replaced engine valve cover gasket, oil filter housing gasket, coolant hoses
    Nov 2018: Battery replacement, brake flush, water pump & thermostat repair
    July 2019: Blower Motor recall
    Sep 2019: Coolant expansion tank
    while the 4dr barely change anything.

    2008 535i, 110k miles, replaced lpfp sensor and coil after a misfire at cyclinder 3, few months ago, problem went away after. And then recently been having long crank issues cold/warm starts, and slight rough idle/vibrations at stop light, no codes, went to Indy and dealers for checkup, and they all said it’s fine... is HPFP or leaky injectors the problem now? Will I get stuck on the roadway one day when some of these things fail? Thanks!

    • @VehicleVirals

      I had the same with long crank starts and vibrations with limited power. I was told by BMW that 3 injectors were miss firing and that I had to replace all 6 because the older ones were no longer sold. Instead of listening to them I changed the coils and the spark plugs and all the issues went away. I also added fuel injection cleaner to a tank of gas and it's been nearly 2 years without any issues.

I guess this is when the previous owner decided to give up lol. Just don’t understand why give up when you’ve already done so much work so recent. But taken he was from Orange County Ca he probably upgraded to a newer car😏. HUGE shoutout to the previous owner as I plan to upgrade and tune the hell outta this stock 335i 😝
