My N54 has been the most reliable car Ive ever had and its been on upgraded twins for almost 2 years
Love to hear it!
How many miles have you put on them?
@@AnthonyGonzalez-zy5zm Over 20k hard miles
What turbos did u go with am planning on upgrading mine don't know what i should go with ( china turbos are not an option ) but the cheaper the better
@@hillalouls9419 FAPOMOTO 17T'S
For me 4.5k euro without man hours, took the engine out and changed everything in one go , from oil cooler , radiator, all the plastic from intakes to water pumps all aluminum now .
Damn that actually doesn’t sound too bad for an engine out service 👀
@@AlteredAutomotive The mechanic here in cyprus wanted 600 euro to take the engine out plus extra bits like valve cover gasket, oil pan gaskets that is extra labour all in with waste gate rattle Vargas stuff 1700 euro for mechanic bill. I bought all the parts from all over the world lol must have spent 1k in delivery charges . when you live on a small island this is the pain . But i cant fkin wait 1 week away from having her back lol
The newest N54 is 14 years old. Yes, if you wish to make a 14-17 year old car with likely around 150k on the clock “reliable”, you’ll need to do some maintenance. I do not recommend just throwing parts at it, though.
That’s a fact…a few of these things you don’t have to do
The newest N54 is 8 years old. They also came in the 2016 Z4 sDrive 35i (engine N54B30). They were in production as little as 8 years ago. Some over run made it into early 2017 for a few 7 year old motors.
@@the-next-gear3626 Thanks! I did not realize they were putting the N54 in the Z car that late. I bet that Z4 35is would move!
@chriswallace9113 there are a few Z4 35is (N54) builds out there, that are monsters. I think covered one of them a few years ago.
thank you so much for breaking this down this thoroughly bro
I do it for the people
This is such a straight to the point video. I’ve have a modded N54 335i before and want another one. Gotta remind myself what I’m getting back into again 😅
They’re so expensive but so fun (I made this video to keep prices down)
Do it, you know exactly what you’re doing
Once everything is done. You’ll have a reliable car that makes power EASY. Love my n54
Sheeeessshhhh I think imma stay away from them bm dubs! Very informative video mate!
Not a bad idea!
yeah they are shit
So right on. Seen a few of these issues on mine. As well, the issues you describe are consistent with the reports on many BMW fan sites about the n54. However, I believe it's worth making your n54 engine reliable to have one of the best engines of all time. Voted best engine 5 years in a row by International Engine of the Year Awards. Also for 3 years by Ward's Ten Best Engines. The n54 is a very tunable engine as well that can easily make a lot more hp with minor modifications.
Well said!
when i bought my 335i n54 it needed, valve cover which i did, coils n plugs, one injector, OFHG, charge pipe exploded lol and complete brake work. Now i need a rear axle seal and oil pan gasket but its not leaking too bad. also a plastic piece was replaced that controls the air/fuel mixture. runs great though and always a joy to drive.
What plastic piece did you replace for air/fuel mixture? I’m having mixture codes and just replaced the pcv but it didn’t do the trick
@@AlteredAutomotive not pcv, it might have been the air fuel ratio oxygen sensor but can’t remember for sure.
@@RE4L72 O2 is not plastic.. the PCV just recirculates spent gasses and pressure from the crankcase, so in a way it contributes to A/F mixture.. the PCV is plastic and monitored electrically.
@@exiteternium yeh no shit. I had a piece replaced that controls to air fuel mixture but can't remember how it looked or the name, might have been a sensor.
Awesome video ! Quick, informative and well detailed! Everything shared was spot on with the N54. You take care of it well, and it will show you real power !
IT TAKES A GOOD OWNER .
I am bad owner
Fantastic video man, super informative and I can tell you know what you’re talking about
That cost more than I thought it was going to Ngl
Same man same
no idea what the big deal is. i have a buck fiddy on my 2008 335xi n54. i did the oil filter housing gaskets once, the instrument cluster once, some front end bushings once. 2 windshields, 1 set of winter tires and 1 set of summer tires. that's it. tires are the biggest expense. and the thing still runs like a screaming raped ape. 3.4 0 to 60 and i get it over 150 at least once a week. i'll race anyone from anchorage to fairbank in february. one of the 10 best engines ever made.
Proper maintenance goes a long way!
I am about to buy 2007 335i tomorrow for 10k
79k mileage, 1 owner with clean car fax and good maintainence. After I watch yOur video I kinda scare from it :) now i don’t know what to do because I drove the car yesterday and it drives very smooth
I always recommend a pre purchase inspection from a mechanic you trust and make sure you’re keeping up on basic maintenance. If you really want to be safe get the engine compression tested before you buy it and the rest of the /most/ isn’t to bad to replace with a RUclips tutorial and a little motivation
Tbh the first thing you should do after you buy one is wall nut blast and a compression test and leak down test no point in placing money in a engine that could be on its way out thats what i do when i get a pre purchase inspection before I buy someones car I never truth the seller no matter how clean it looks
Me, unwalnut blasted, uncompression tested, sweating😅

Great video brotha!
Thank you!
My old n54 went into limp mode after a 140 pull 😭

really good, to the point Chanel.
Thanks man💪
Short and informative, ty. One info I am yet to find anywhere though: does this list apply to stock or almost stock (say 400 chp) N54's, or mostly (heavily) tuned ones. Asking cuz I'm considering a e92 335i but I certainly don't want to constantly worry about this and that part failing and potentially getting stranded, not to mention the big costs associated with it
I’d like to imagine it would be fairly reliable if you kept it on stock/mhd stage 1 (lowest map ~ 330ish whp) regardless you should swap out your spark plugs, coil packs, & charge pipe tuned or not. As for the rest these cars are getting old and there’s a lot of plastic in the bay that is prone to cracking + the engines run HOT and the gaskets aren’t the best material so those are also prone to fail in time as well. Unfortunately the water pump is guaranteed to fail within 70k-100k miles so if you get one around that mileage make sure it’s been replaced. These cars can be hit or miss regardless of all, just make sure that the one you’re looking at has been maintained by the previous owner and all should be well!
Edit: It never hurts to get a prepurchase inspection done by the BMW dealer if you’re buying 3rd party👍
@@AlteredAutomotive Gaskets, hoses, spark p. and coils, basically the regular Bmw items, I don't mind. It's the pricey stuff (HPFP, injectors...) that worries me, especially if they fail regularly. Thanks
I thought the N54 uses a timing chain, belt breaking shouldn't be fatal.
Its the auxiliary belt he's referring to. It can get sucked into the engine through the front crank seal if it breaks but Vargas makes a plate that goes behind the balancing wheel in case that happens. Saved me from destruction when my belt broke
I.never did anything with my toyota for 200k
Now I'm getting a n54 omg
I trust my gfs 300k mile 4 runner more than my 84k mile bmw 🤣
How do you keep your interior so nice?
Honestly I have no clue, I’ve only cleaned it once or twice since I got it😅
Just buy in n55
I wanted more fast, only thing fast is the money leaving my wallet
I have one of each and I consider the N54 the superior motor. My heavily modded N54 with 130k has zero codes. My F30 N55 has a list of them and rooting out the cause(s) has been a pain. Still haven’t got it sorted out.
my e90 got the HPFP recall sticker on the hood and its at 140k miles right now. Should I be worried about it or nah?
If you have MHD log a few pulls and check your rail pressure and fuel low pressure sensor, the HPFP should be at least 1800-2000psi and the lpfp shouldn’t be dipping into the mid to low 50s. (Safe values around 2200-2500 for hpfp and 70+ on lpfp under load)
If your HPFP is showing lower values make sure to check your LPFP first. The LPFP having low pressures could cause the HPFP to drop in pressure and is also the cheaper part! I hope this helps 👍🏻
Thank you! I had my LPFP replaced with a brand new OEM bout a year back so it should be good.
Radiator man radiator. Had to fix two leaks on a less than year old mahle radiator
Not a bad thing to replace/upgrade tbh
rod bearings,turbos,injectors
I always thought rod bearings were only common on the m3s until I made this video 😭
@@AlteredAutomotiverod bearings is common on every bmw I swear. Good to just do. People never maintained these cars.
So rod bearings & crack hub is ignored? lol.
Tbh I never heard of those being common issues until I made this video
Rod bearings aren’t really common unless the oil change history is dodgy. Crank hub can spin but unlikely at power levels most will achieve

@@federicosuarez1714 Did they change from hydraulic steering to electric power steering on the LCI models? I thought all the e92 had hydraulic power steering
ain’t no way im spending 12K on just maintenance… VQ it is
