The level of this match was more like a quarterfinal round. It's a pity these two great players had to face each other so early. Well done to Alcarez for showing the fighting spirit after being down 2 sets to love and likewise to Berrettini's phenomenal mental strength to pull out the 5th set. Hopefully Mateo's ankle will be fine for the next round.

I love how Berrettini won and yet everybody is still talking about Alcaraz. It shows how dynamic and visibly talented Alcaraz is. However, Berrettini is looking really solid early on. He has improved overall during the offseason, especially his backhand which has always been his greatest weakness. I'm not saying it's a strength now but it's much more powerful and consistent than it was last year.

His movement is so graceful and elegent that only a world-class ballerino can do. The way he hits the ball looks so gentle yet powerful. The backhand/forehand/slice/dropshot/lob/passing shots all are so smooth like running water, yet so deadly as the torrent. Wanna see him play more until the final day of the tournament. He has a monstrous and magnetic game, and together with that passion and that fight on court, he generates an incredible aura. Even when he loses, there is more talk about him than the winner, a sign of the charisma he has and the admiration that he already generates from people at such a young age. I hope he can stay healthy because if he is, we are going to see and enjoy amazing things with this child. There are defeats that are investments for the future, this is one of them. Berrettini’s big weapon COMMANDS respect and adoration. He easily intimidates all others with his big weapon, he bullies them into a vulnerable position, then he forces his way in and crushes it. No wonder he has that swagger, confidence and natural cockiness about him; he is physically superior, born to dominate.

I hate double faulting on a game point. But the game was superb.

Wow, just wow! These guys are sensational. I don't like to denigrate, but - just compare with the best matches the WTA can offer: they just thump the ball into the corners, relentlessly. This middle-ranking men's match has it all: slices, net play, lobs, dropshots, movement of the highest order, unbelievable power...
Btw - love the way that Berrettini has worked on his backhand. It's no longer a weakness. Maybe not yet a 'strength' but it's getting there. I like his attitude. But Alcaraz is on another level: we're looking at a dominant player of the next generation (along with Sinner, hopefully).

Why did Berretini keep asking for the balls from the ball girl/boys on Alcaraz serve? he wanted to send them across, vs them rolling it. Did anyone else notice that? A couple of times he was yelling at them for the ball.

I really hope Carlos could be win after two set down here, so sad to see him got shame after getting double fault in the last crucial point.

Finally a decent match in AO..I hope Berrettini can go very far in this GS..Alcaraz is no doubt strong and talented but lacks a bit of flexibility and variation
