No pregnant teenagers or Snooki. Those were the good old days.
No dumb girls getting pregnant or Shore...
well, we never let the preggies on MTV back then. They were on Springer.
I definetly agree with you 💯% MTV now is the deploration of humanity in general with the crap they show kids now a day's!
Goes to show you how Generation X and the Boomers create something wonderful and the millennials turned it to $hit in no time.
What the fuck is a "Snookie"?
These were the best VJs of MTV (1981-1986).
But, oh how we STILL lost one of 'em, J.J. Jackson.
I did not know J.J. passed away. May his name be blessed - April 8, 1941 - March 17, 2004)
In those early 80's MTV years I had a tiny apartment and lived alone. So when I was home I'd have MTV on constantly - even on when I slept. It was a kind of living-breathing background "noise" that I could dip in and out of whenever I wanted. It felt like these were my friends and we were all in this amazing music world together.
Those were very cool days 24-hour music on TV that was revolutionary then
Very well said
@@BAKER22-l4u absolutely GameChanger
Absolutely GameChanger
Did anyone else watch the commercials? I did at first because I wasn't paying attention but then I was reminiscing as they were playing. It was weird. Thanks for posting this.
R.I.P JJ Jackson, David Bowie and Classic MTV
Legend has it that "M" in MTV stood for Music
MTV was/is the perfect example of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
Oh how I miss these wonderful MTV days!
I really miss the old days!
Me too. We did not have cell phones or internet but I love the early 80’s
Rest in peace J.J. Jackson. You are still missed.
How did he die and when
@@kascnef He visited Chicago and got whacked by assident.
@Justin Fencsak he died from a heart attack while driving home to LA after dinner with a friend in 2004
I enjoyed making Video Killed the Radio Star in wandsworth london
During the early 2000s, MTV still cared about their rock and 80s roots. People kinda tend to forget that. It wasn't until about 2005 they went full blown reality TV and pretended like their past never existed.
JPMcFly1985Two #FeelTheBern very true. MTV used to air specials like this all the time amongst newer stuff like Making the Video
is that when they moved into he masonic lodge? i know its always been masonic controlled like everything but when the reality stuff started it became a full blown operation... n from what i can tell it worked.
"pretended like their past never existed" well said.
TRL destroy it.
It's true. I remember seeing clips of Sledgehammer, Video Killed and various Madonna videos on the regular in the late '90s. They were very proud of their heritage.
As far as I'm concerned, MTV has only had five VJs in their entire existence.
It was a great time to be that age. I still love to listen to the New Wave/New Romantic music and watch the music videos. If it weren't for MTV, that phenomenon would not have had mainstream success in the United States.
I really miss the good days of cool music and awesome VJ's! I grew up with you!!!!
My wife and i were both in high school when MTV came out. We both agree, MTV should suspend the idiotic programming every weekend and show classic MTV music videos. Begin on Friday night prime time and run non stop until late Sunday night.
MTV is a shell of itself. It is so irrelevant today. It was great back in the day.
I ♥️ my “old school” MTV! You guys were the best!
I was 13 in 1983 and I have to say MTV opened my mind to other kinds of music. I did like the occasional MTV show- the tom green show was the last one I loved-but --it is so sad what it became. Same with Vh1! Remember how fun they used to be?
My brother(who's 13 years older than me) was only 6, but he distinctly remember loving MTV back then.
Those were the original when it was all music..all awesome!!! Being a lifelong Duran fan..I thanks these guys everyday!♥
It seemed like "Hungry Like the Wolf" played 24x7! Rio, The Reflex...great old times.
I was sitting in front of the tv with my friends when the launch and first video played. Being a teen in the 80s was the greatest. Graduated in 87 so i was in deep in the 80 and early 90s. Steve
I love 80's on 8on Sirius XM radio.
From "Video Killed the Radio Star" to "Internet Killes the Rockstar".
When MTV actually played music videos.
There's an MTV 80s channell but is not the same without the commercials, the DJS and MTV Flag intros.
1981 - 1986: Golden Years
1987 - 1999: Silver Years
2000 - 2009: Downfall
2010 - Now: Terrible
I still remember my sister calling me into house to watch Thriller world premiere video.
Mary M. Revis
When MTV was perfect!! Alan, Mark, JJ, Martha, and Nina the perfect group!. Rest In Peace JJ. Thank God SiriusXM has them for 80s on 8 😄👍❤️
Alan was tolerable. The rest belong in a strip mall dumpster.
MTV(Music Television(80s)( not now) was/is a zeitgeist of its time.
Damn, do I miss those days. The internet really did ruin everything. I think it has done more bad than good when you look how it has changed our society and world.
I can vividly remember being one of the first houses in the neighborhood to get cable. I invited about 20 kids over after school one day to watch this AWESOME NEW THING called MTV.
It was a great time to be young and totally into music when that rocket took off.
The best was when MTV recently had some sort of birthday milestone and I saw a meme that said MTV TURNS 25 TODAY HELP CELEBRATE 15 YEARS OF MUSIC hahahahaha
Glorious! : D
I much prefer the original MTV.
Such great memories! The first couple of years literally looked like Wayne's World, like it was underground television filmed in a basement. I remember an early studio interview with Hall & Oates where the band members started arguing with each other and I couldn't believe someone was actually broadcasting it on television.
That is some brilliant shit right there. Glad someone was able to witness it! : D
Pretty cool interviews with the MTV VJs! Also cool to see some footage of the early MTV videos and appearances from many of my fave musicians - David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Billy Idol, Duran Duran, Flock of Seagulls, Human League, Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Ozzy, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna!
MTV-Music Television, In Stereo Where Available!
Need it back now! MTV is just full of reality tv and other tv shows... more music more input from youth was what it used to be.
I Miss My MTV!!
Sting needs to do a reprise: I miss my, I miss my MTV. 😂
I remember watching one day when Mark Goodman introduced the compact disc. He was highly unimpressed and flung it like a Frisbee. It was hilarious. I grew up in Philly and watched mtv come on air for the first time because I knew Mark from Philadelphia's WMMR. I sure miss those days. Now that I'm disabled and homebound, the original MTV would certainly help kill my depression. I'd gice anything to have a collection of dvds of the original years on MTV.
You can find lots of the old school MTV stuff right here on RUclips.
Yes Mark was our favourite DJ on WMMR. M M MARCH !!! Funny he didn't mention MMR here, but mentioned WPLG.
I Miss Them Especially J.J r.i.p
God I'd give anything to relive those days in front of the original MTV on tele. It sure went downhill the last time I watched it in the 90's. Pure Crap
Beaver N It will downhill when they stopped showing music videos. Should we blame TRL for the downslide of the channel?
@@truediva18 The real world started it all.
@@christschool Yeah, "Real World" fucked everything up.
THIS IS AWESOME! IT HAD ME USE MY OWN HOBBY WITH VIDEO TAPES WHILE COPPING REGULAR VIDEOS AND MAKING MY OWN! IT IS AWESOME THE VJS ARE NOW DJS ON THE XM80S RADIO STATION
So here it is 19 years after a recap of a show 19 years earlier! A bloody paradox!
And now it's been 3 years since the comment about it being 19 years after a recap of a show about 19 years earlier!
I miss this era of MTV. Annoyed at all the teen mom spinoffs and dumbass Floribama Shore. RIP JJ Jackson.
Happy Birthday to Nina.9-12-55.Springfield,MA. The original MTV VJ's.Graduated from Rocky River High.
would love to see the original format return
Watching a show 20 years later, that was about stuff that happened 20 years before that, that I remember first hand...feeling old lol.
I'm so happy there are uploads here of lots of old shows i grew up with it is so nice to see
who's seeing this for the first time in 2024? Hard to find actually find posts of early years WITH music videos, but they are out there
Martha.....
I was 15 in 1981......
I gave her probably 1 gallon of attention in those days......
Man, they sure picked the right five. I am forever in the debt of J.J., Mark, Alan, Nina and of course, Martha for being such an integral part of my youth.
Happy 38th Anniversary to MTV and the VJs!
Yass! I grew up with all of them.
THOSE were the days!!!
I had a crush on Martha
to this day, martha quinn is a delight. her interviews are wonderful - she has a wide-eyed wonder and appreciation for those days. I'm a 63-year-old happily married man, and I still have a tiny crush on her!
I want my MTV! ❤️👍
❤ I Want My MTV… when they played nothing but Videos
Glad they didn't fire Alan Hunter. He was good. Always liked him. Of course they were all good.
R.I.P. triple J.
very good...miss those days.
People forget Prince's "1999" Dec 1982 was first black video to come on MTV then Billy Jean 83!!! I used to love MTV we couldnt get it where i was in L.A. i dont know maybe cable co. wasnt broadcasting it jackberry cable we didnt Cinemax, Showtime, and ON TV so in 1982 i watched it all day all night in Texas it was perfect it was hot outside 102-03 degrees!! Buggles, The Bangles, The Go-Gos, Duran Duran, Eurythmics, Madness, Billy Idol, Adam Ant, Dexy Midnight Runners, Rod Stewart, Flock of Seaguls,Pat Benetar, Motels, Human League, Spandu Ballet, Prince, MJ, Cindy Lauper, Van Halen, Quiet Riot, Madonna, Journey, The Motels, Pretenders. I Loved MTV!!!!!
The original MTV VJ's were like the original NASA astronauts. Love them all.
Rip🙏 J.J Jackson! You are definitely missed!👋😢✌I miss the early day's of MTV! 1981-85.
Sweet, sweet memories! Thanks for posting, wish the border wasn't so big. Pure nostalgic bliss! 💗📺🎶
after about 1990 mtv became a complete shell of its former self. People would probably watch if they went back to its original format
Martha Quinn!
Here in Canada we had our own version called MuchMusic with one veejay named JD Roberts who is now with Fox under the name John Roberts...
Ahhhh, Summer of 1981. MTV was new, hot, and I was 13 years old.
Alan Hunter and Mark Goodman are both beautiful and sexy guys. I still listen to them on Sirius XM on 80's on 8 in 2018. I was sadden that Martha Quinn quit working as a VJ on 80's on 8 couple of years ago. I love 80's on 8. Now there is only three left Nia, Alan, and Mark, since Martha left.
I basically stopped watching MTV in January 1983, when I went into the Navy. After that I had money to buy cassettes, a boom box, and concert tickets...
They were the right people at the right moment. The concept was great back then. But looking back, they made it great. Original VJ's, you were the interviewers then, but for my generation, you are the stars we remember most now that we are older.
Agreed. Very well said.
I was 14yrs old when MTV came out. I tried to look like Nina Blackwood.
What a wonderful memories. Wow. Love you guys
I remember watching the first video (Buggles) and several hours on the first night of MTV until my folks forced me to go to bed around 11pm. Watched religiously all month thru August '81 until school started in Sept. I went to school (9th grade) and asked everyone what they thought of MTV - They all just looked at me like, "WTF are you goin' on about?"
Ii want my MTV!
I watched this when it originally aired, and the second one as well.
They sent Alan Hunter “Amok in America” and he vanished from the channel. I liked him too.
Amazing how they could do something so groundbreaking and then throw it all in the trash...
It left a huge legacy behind and it will never see the light of day again.
Really interesting. Thanks for posting this.
I was 11 when MTV premiered. I'm Canadian, and we couldn't get MTV. But I happened to be in Spokane WA visiting relatives that day. My older cousin told me we had to stay up until midnight to see this new channel start up. I didnt get it, but I waited and remember the excitement of the screen going from fuzz to the countdown of the rocket ship launching and the music starting as the spaceman planted the flag. I witnessed history.
The first 8 to ten years were magic.....to bad it turned to shit.
I didn't stay up that night to watch but I started watching the next day or so. And I lived in Spokane Wa.
I remember there were some good concerts on mtv. A couple that come to mind are Prince with Shelia E. and George Thorogood. Of course there was Live Aid and the whole unplugged movement as well.
I want my MTV
I wanna get innnnn martha quinn !!!!
I wish they stuck to damn music
Loved it! All great! Nina was my favorite.
Really enjoyed this! I was in love with Martha Quinn. Her and Alan Hunter were favorites. Alan use to crack me up.
Classic MTV. 15 minutes of content. 15 minutes of commercials.
One of those rare groups of intrepid souls who have the balls to try something new -- and possibly fail big time. Not like the rest, who simply wait for someone else to come up with the big ideas and copy them. Thanks for being the first, guys! :-)
At the 7 minute mark was the first song I heard from MTV. Owner of a lonely heart by Yes. Followed by Jump Van Halen.
awesome doc.
Quite a few are now on Sirius XM.
Man, some of this stuff was so long ago. I barely remembered J.J. Jackson and Alan Hunter, until I saw them again. But I thought Martha Quinn was just adorable.
I had, have the biggest crush on Martha Quinn.
Ahhh the good old days
They should thank Mick Nesmith for this concept, since he was the one who came up with it.
they're still rocking.
Back When MTV was All about The Music ,and Giving Away, Trips to Party, With Van Halen,or Aerosmith
Black. White. We didn't give a F. We were GenX. It was an awesome time!!
I was the perfect age. About 13 when it aired in my city. That's all I watched for at least a year .
3:30 holy crap, a real Meg Griffin!
