Facts Verse Yes the bands were awesome. But what I could never figure out is during the mid 80’s they played videos from talent such as Tina Turner Bryan Adams , Hall and Oates, Springsteen. But where I lived in Indiana from 1:00 to 1:30 pm they played the most requested videos of the day. And they were always the Hairbands such as Whitesnake, Cinderella, Ratt, Twisted Sister etc. Never quite understood why they didn’t show the videos of these bands more during the day.
They got sued a few times in the early 2000's, and it really broke their spirit. They began to transition to shows with Daria, and for a while the programming was actually decent, but it had a particular nihilistic focus and philosophy and when that was combined with the Reality TV philosophy it was perfect lawsuit fuel. "Never quite understood why they didn’t show the videos of these bands more during the day." Because the people making the requests will tune in during a time of day when they wouldn't otherwise tune in to see the requests, whereas they'll tune in at peak hours regardless. Plus stuff that's being requested has already been seen a fair bit and is probably already borderline overplayed.

Well, "video killed the radio stars." - The Buggles - "Reality Shows killed the music videos on MTV. - Me - RUclips does have a lot of music videos from the old MTV days and a lot from the 50's, 60's' and 70's. I was 17 and a college freshman when MTV started, 1981 we would leave only MTV on for all 7 years of Bachelor’s & Masters, my who I met in college always tells everyone that I’m still an MTV teenager. Because I recorded days & months of MTV for my colleagues and she says I stayed in that phase even with a PhD I’m still immature.
What I liked about this classic MTV is that I might catch a video when my TV show on another channel was showing commercials. Even if MTV continued in this format today, I don't think I could tolerate all the rap videos they would be obligated to show..
I Definitely Miss the Old MTV, the VJ's, the Videos, & Especially the Types of Music. I know that I'm Dating myself... But I was getting ready to be a Senior in high school when MTV Debuted & it was Definitely a Hit & the Latest Craze. Years later when formats changed, it was a Very Sad☹ Day for the VJ's, Music, & Music Videos on MTV. Now MTV is All About Drama TV Shows & Everything that MTV was Created for, is Now Locked Up in the MTV History Vault. But, at Least We Have RUclips to Thank to Savor MTV's Music History from the Beginning on 08/01/1981. A little Tidbit from my local history....a few months after MTV became a Huge Success, a little know Detroit, Michigan TV Station created a place for teens to go to dance or we could watch at home that we could see the kids dancing, but watch the Videos of the songs being played too. Anyways, it was Our Version of MTV....but was Called MV3. It lasted roughly from late 1981-1984. I wrote to both MTV & MV3 & asked if I could Get their Iconic Original Logo Pins.....& After a few months, I Did Receive "1" from MTV, which is made of Pewtor, & "1" from MV3, which is a round metal pin with their Logo in pink & light blue. I still have both to this day & I got them both for Free. What Sweet Deal it Was & Is to be able to own a Piece of Music📻 History.
They were also forbidden to do endorsements. With their fame Coke Pepsi or Doritos would have jumped to have them as spokespeople. MTV didn't want anyone to be bigger than the MTV brand.
Back in the 80's everybody in my household watched MTV, it was the channel (channel 25 btw) that we always went to if we weren't watching a movie or the news etc. MTV was great for introducing you to new music and I miss that more than anything. Because I recorded days & months of MTV for my colleagues and she says I stayed in that phase even with a PhD I’m still immature.
19 in 81....what a year
What I liked about this classic MTV is that I might catch a video when my TV show on another channel was showing commercials.
Even if MTV continued in this format today, I don't think I could tolerate all the rap videos they would be obligated to show..
in 1982 I really like Martha Quinn and to this day I still watch Martha Quinns Rock trivia.
Steve "Perry" is from Journey. Steve "Tyler" is from Aerosmith.
Miss the old MTV.
Us too! Music is the best back then.
I had a crush on Nina Blackwood,,🔥😎
I can see why. She was a darling!
I do miss the original style and content of MTV.
We had peace
I strongly agree with Mark Goodman that RUclips is now literally today's Mtv.
Makes me sad and very nostalgic. Oh and I now feel old as dirt. Lol
Back in the 80's everybody in my household watched MTV, it was the channel (channel 25 btw) that we always went to if we weren't watching a movie or the news etc. MTV was great for introducing you to new music and I miss that more than anything. The 80's was just a better time in general partly due to having MTV
MTV's music v-j's need s to be back on the Air from the 1980's
.....like it used to be
You can never go home again. That saying applies to MTV, and too bad because I miss the old days.
Sad but true. Thanks for sharing. What other types of video would you like to see?
I miss the old Mtv!!Used to watch in college!!
a great time to be a teen in the 80s. i remember when mtv was literally fun to watch and stood for MUSIC. its turned into a pile of trash that has nothing to do with music at all.
Well said, we strongly concur! Thank you for watching our content and for sharing your thoughts. What other types of video would you like to see?
I was in my first enlistment in the Airforce living off base. Thought it was great being independent at the time as a 20 year old.
❤MTV❤ , Yo MTVRaps, MTV Cribs, videos and news was and will be great to watch now oh and if the vj’s were the🕺🏼 musicians themselves who are and were in videos! The videos helped bring their music to life 💃🏻with a better understanding, the meaning of their lyrics.🧟♂️” The Thriller”! Need I say more. Yes I 😢miss❤ my MTV!
Yes I do miss the old school MTV
I love the 80s musics ❤️👍
MTV isn't MTV without the M for music and the purpose of it. Now it's more about "Reality Shows" and not the music
I want my old MTV
Yea .. once upon a time... U had to hunt any info all over tv .. magazines.. buy cassettes n vinyls
Still got a thing for Martha Quinn
60s 70s 80s and 90s were the best years of my life and now we are in 2020 and the world 🌎 is upside down😞😞
At the time these were the coolest people.
I like the original MTV way of just videos and it’s all music and video concepts. Now I’m showing my age. That’s for this information.
Bring back the videos 24/7.
I miss the original MTV
I want my MTV
