Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress. But the role she plays in "Silver Linings Playbook" cannot compare with the nuances and complexities that Emmanuelle Riva gracefully gives in "Amour".
I think Watts should have won for the impossible. She was incredibly powerful in the role.
This is one of the rare but unfortunate cases where they gave the award to the least-deserving of the 5 nominees. But it's not really her fault, it was Weinstein

I don't know if "gracefully" is the word I would use to describe what Riva goes through during the second hour of "Amour" because it's so agonizingly realistic in the deterioration, but yes to all of this.

In my opinion, she didn't win an Oscar because she was better than all the female nominees in the category but for the fact she played an aged widow perfectly when she herself was in her early 20's. Kelly Applegath Fame is pointless. A movie can be a message, an allegory, an eye-opener towards the "real picture" as you put it, much like a book. Not perhaps as hard-hitting, but people devote their lives to the artistry of movies, of creating the message not only within the story but the shots, the sounds, the mise en scene. The oscars are a way of celebrating skill in that work.
Is it as important as a stand in? A riot against oppression? The war in Syria? The inevitable collapse of the American way of life? Probably not. Is it even important at all? Maybe not. I don't know. But I see more value in the Oscars than I do in watching Jersey Shore, The X Factor, or a social justice post on the internet.
Kelly Applegath self expression and art isn't meaningless. Yah the way hollywood makes celebrities gods is absolutely pointless. But performing is something that you can't understand if you have never done it. Also. the times i have been the most moved in my life are by watching a movie or film. This oscar was won for a movie about mental illness, which helped raise awareness and in her interviews she talks about erasing the stigma that comes with a mental disorder. That is NOT pointless. I am just saying, like don't hate on someone's passion.
