I was in the water with him on a chest high day in Ventura last week. I’ll never cease to be amazed by how much speed he can generate. Even kicking out he pulls out as he lays back down he carries so much speed throughout that whole process. It kinda didn’t make sense. He’s got it. Such a pleasure to watch. He also drops in on everyone and immediately pulls out if it looks like they’re not just gonna be the guy who goes straight. Masterclass. Really enjoyed the show.

Such an inspiring surfer and master of some of surfing's most technical aspects. The pace of the interview was incredibly fluid. What a joy.

1:44:57 People able to do that kind of stuff on a regular basis have probably developed an acute way to read the ocean by being particularly aware of their surroundings, without even thinking about it.

I went to Mike tabelings house once to place an order for some Thailand boards he was selling. I thought I had walked into Mike Tyson's house. It was full of gold tiger statues, elephant tusks, giant hi end paintings and tons of crazy safari stuff. It was at that moment I actually looked up who he was 😂

Love watching DH surf...just effortless. Got a CI Mid in 2020 because of his clips & hands down a superb board to ride. It de-lamed after 3 years unfortunately so I've gone back to a local Irish shaper with his own mid length model, surfs similar to the mid thankfully!

@markcapilitan3484 DH makes it look so easy! 🤙 Bummer about the de-lam, but awesome that you found a local shaper with a similar midlength ....Happy surfing! 🏄‍♂️ #SurfingLife #CIMid #LocalShapers 🌊

@@SurfSplendor loving the interview...DH just talking towards the end (function & form section), but it's a lesson on how to ride a mid-length properly...relax, let the board do its thing!

Watching the WSL's shambles these past 10 years or so and the conversation at 39 minutes makes me think about the relationship between competitive surfing and the core activity and scene of the practitioners. When that relationship breaks down it sucks a lot of life and personality out of the competitive side.
I wonder what would happen if you had a contest where you just let the surfers surf whenever they wanted over a full day on a chosen wave and then scored their waves. Maybe limit each competitor to 3 or 4 hours in the water and call the event for a day when there's good swell. Men and women could surf together, lots of strategy with conditions.
Also I can't get away from the idea that contests should be run based on swells rather than calendar. Figure out how to run them for a single good swell and wait for it before you call the event on. Surfers can prepare however they want and would just have to be there for the few contest days if they so choose. Pick your regions in advance so people can prepare like Indo and Australia in the spring and summer, west coast and mexico and caribean in the fall, hawaii in winter, mix in other regions like South America, Europe and Africa. They should always run in good waves at good spots, that seems like the most basic part of the job.
2:01:00 Ned Flanders decides to flex: guest shares a great anecdote on localism; fire inside? Highly recommended.

Surfing is a performance activity. there's room for posing and high performance. I love a nice pose. Milk it for it's entertaiment value. The caveat is if you can't performance then your posing is kooky. Smash a sick turn then soul arch a look back high line. Also, don't get stuck in the woowoo baloney. The magical timing of high level surfers is just accumulated knowledge, a deep understand of the rhythms of the ocean.
