I'd be stoked if Mikey drops in on me!!!😅😅😅
Anyway david ill stop commenting on your vids. I actually saw your name pop up in this online article about surfing. Its cool to see youre out here making a podcast and stuff. You and i were friends as teenagers and i always liked you. I wish you luck with your surfing podcast.
Love the specs bro i wear them too now. 😂😂😂 You look like a dad who gets mad at his kids for adjusting the thermostat 😂😂
"electric acid" that's awesome it's a reference to an author named Tom Wolfe who wrote the "electric cool aid acid test". He wrote about surfers and the psychedelic community. There were some fascinating characters in that time. Check out the brotherhood of light commune super interesting
Thanks for sharing this. Thinking we covered the name's meaning etc in a previous year's episode, but not sure so thank you!
@SurfSplendor do you not remember me dude? 😂🤣🤣
@SurfSplendor we should do an interview thing on your podcast some time I have some funny surfing stories and also we could reminisce about surfing as teenagers. What a story!! 😂.
Ive slept with a few boards
Yeah you did!
Well, can't say that I've slept with my surfboards, but I do name them all.
That's even stranger! What are their names? Dude names???
@ Rubina, Penelope, Debbie, Ricardita, Matilda, Tanya, Japeda, and Jameeker. All female names, c’mon now!
Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory for the apples AND Chocolate covered graham crackers those are better barrels.
I feel like you guys are out of touch. You’re pussy’s 😂
Richie!! Was a grom when he was dominating. He was one of the first punk surfers. Big fan of Richie!
Awesome!
thanks all 3 of you legends.. (but especially Brad legendary) 🤣🤣
Legend-fest! thank you!
I was at Sunset Beach 3 weeks ago and got some really great pictures of Luke. I didn't realize who it was until his friends walked up and asked if I got the shots. Pretty freaking cool! He was riding a bright green board.
that's awesome... you should send them to him on instagram
Gerr!! Love That Guy!! Best Style Ever Besides, You Know Who!!!! TC
Definitely
Where you surfing at these days Mr David Scales? Still going to Trestles?
Almost never haha
@SurfSplendor where you surf at these days?
Laird is an amazing surfer. Imo one of if not THE best. Physicality, huge waves, whatever and the most important innovations in surfing. 100% a fan of his big wave surfing! BUT! if u r thinking he doesnt burn people , alot, u r not serious! Read his book. The title is enough!
That's so cool you interviewed my favorite surfer from the 90s. I saw him out at Cardiff a few times when I used to go camping down there. I see Dodger Kremell at my job a lot he's a firefighter in Cypress now. There I just dropped another hint at who I am 😂😂😂
Haha, drop a name
@SurfSplendor it's Matt. We used to surf together a few times. You left cypress and moved to Whittier you must have been like 15 or so. We ran into each other at Trestles it's been a while. 😂
@@SurfSplendor I remember your dad took us to Old Mans once and then we also went to Huntington once in the afternoon and surfed the blown out slop with another buddy of mine Kyle we all three went. I have a pretty good memory 😂😂😂
26:00 Good to hear about some smaller independent contests hosting great surfers in good conditions. Maybe surfing could be more like Rodeo where the cowboys just show up, pay their entry fee and compete. Maybe the power move against big corporate style people controlling surfing is to ignore them and build something ground up, less money focused, more community focused, that speaks to the core community and in so doing take it from the man. 39:00 Thumbs up for creating a safe space for real people to tell their story.
The thing we always forget is that the WSL, for all its faults and failures, does a really nice technical broadcast. And that's not cheap and we all want to watch!
@SurfSplendor yea, I dont know how hard it is to broadcast but I do know I have stopped following wsl almost completely and would check out some smaller contest happily
Research Halloween we should not celebrate darkness and evil. More kids get killed and taken away on this night than any other night. We’ve got to wake up as humans. God bless you all.
It's not cruel buddy, maybe a little clumsy. Another of your whiny whinges that pop up here and there for no reason. Sam is fine.
Sasha Jane is a proper muppet why tf you talking about it
For my 16th birthday (1966) my dad surprised me with a Brewer baby gun ... and you bet I slept with it! The more gorgeous board ever!
Match made in heaven
Album’s BomDia and Lovemachine’s Satilite models are both narrow boards but keep plenty of volume through the straight rail lines and pushing foam out wide. I think the pickle forks would be similar in that they still pack a decent amount of foam into a narrow package. I am keen to ride a pickle fork but living in Australia makes it way too costly.
One would imagine they start popping up over there
@@calebsandercock8538 I think for himself he’s always trying to push the limit on how little foam he can ride. Even mine which is totally reasonable on paper, is pretty refined. I think that’s the intention with the design.
Brah. I posted my experience on one of Brad’s videos some months back and got totally attacked by the vegan squad. I’ve been eating like Paul for 3 years, but going more and more animal based for probably 7 years. Best thing I ever did. I stopped aging and started skating again after 25 years, and have been surfing again regularly for the last 3 years, every single day, for 4 to 6 hours in the water a day. I surf circles around kids and adults alike now, I heal rapidly, and can surf through injuries with no issues, from rotator cuff tears to fractured metatarsals in my foot, and it’s all because I eat basically only meat. I know because I did all the, “healthy”, eating stuff for years, aka organic vegetables, and my health went to shite and I couldn’t out workout that diet and injuries took me out. I surfed 4 hours everyday for the last 12 days with my lower back out, from a snowboard tailbone fall on ice, a hole through my forearm muscle where my nose speared my arm on an inside wipeout on double up wonk, a stretch thigh muscle from doing the splits on another wipeout, and a nematocyst sting on my leg from wiping out trying to pull into a backhand barrel and hitting the bottom. My arm has been swollen with fluid for 12 days from the hole in my muscle, and it doesn’t bother me at all and I’ve lost no strength nor mobility. I’m 43 and nothing bothers me now and I wish I had known that all that, “healthy eating”, chicken and broccoli and kale salads, was NONSENSE!, 20 years ago. I could’ve done so much more with my life had I known to just eat meat only. And that’s not to mention any of the cognitive benefits I’ve seen. I also got rid of my 80 year old dad’s type 2 diabetes and slowed his onset dementia. There’s no going back to stupid to make vegan chicks who surf to be cool accept me. No ma’am!
I recently received my custom 7’ Seaside & Beyond shaped by Rob Machado, The first day, went for a surf even though it was 2’ onshore slop, had a great time as she rendered the feeling I was looking for. Washed her off, kissed her goodnight, and slept with her in bed
18th street newps legend. Big piont
although gisell"s bjj instructor may not be world champion but he and his whole family is very well known in bjj community .... the bf and his other brothers were doing bjj probably before they were walking because of they dad who is a red belt in bjj .....
He's pretty well known
If your from san Clemente you can remember Sam George (before he started plagiarizing Steinbeck as a self appointed surf chronicler) back in the day as a pretty boy with a farah fawcett haircut doing coke in the charthouse bathroom and dropping in on locals at uppers and getting told to "go home kook" by the same local crew at the hut
He's got great speaking charisma though.
@bonsummers2657 lol hes a fast talking bs'er
A tale as old as time
Organic Omnivore is good for me. most people are getting sick from vegetables because the are coated in water resistant pesticides. If they could wash off from a simple rinse then one rain in the field would render that pesticide useless.
Lots of good points many of us are unaware of
1:06:48 I noticed this while trying a “one wheel” electric skateboard after being really good at balancing manuals skateboarding, I was trying to fight the gyro in the one wheel and getting frustrated.
So it's opposite of a manual?
@ it’s kind of hard to explain, the one wheel does all the work for you with the balance and I was fighting it rather than just trusting
See's is a Warren Buffet company. He runs it without trying to make it growth stock or make a lot of money off of the business. Apparently they can't do what they do and make a lot of money or grow real big. On sexuality I learned from Amia Srinivasan to think of peoples sexuality as not reflecting who you are, but more what you want in that aspect of ones life. The thing with trans and transition is that it's extreme and historically a small minority of people; like trans rights in prison? OK but what about human rights in prison. Tolerance lets you not worry too much about fringe stuff.
Never heard that about Sees! Interesting
Another great interview DLS. I resolved/ cured some so called incurable autoimmune conditions through a strict carnivore diet back in 2020. After two years eating only red meat the diet ran its course and started to become very problematic. I believe the way Dr Saladino eats is definitely sustainable but could still be problematic to some. I perfer variety, if something doesn't agree with me I don't eat it. The plants are toxic movement is a bit ridiculous. If you think something is toxic it probably is going to be a problem for you because you have made it that way.
So many different humans, in a different stages of health, it's definitely confusing sometimes. Thanks for this input
you should have asked why he doesn't have a medical practice, why a year ago fruit was bad and now it's good, or what was the lifespan of our ancestors, without modern medicine we would all be dead at 20, I can go on and on. justifying his lies with "just because there's no study..." truth is there are many studies and they all show he is full of BS he just decides to no mention them. disappointing to see you give this charlatan an audience without challenging any of his claims. he is a book salesman, he needs controversy to get attention otherwise he'd be irrelevant.
This is a surf based infotainment show, not a hard hitting news hour. Over 10 years we've had on a range of different guests as they relate to what's being talked about in surfing. Appreciate your critical thoughts here because that's what the show is for: creating conversations.
Hes a hack. Carnivore one year. Then Slamming honey, because some random african tribe ate it. One minute hates oxalates, now says veg is good. Just because he barely surfs he's our boy. His business partner and dealings. Go get bloodwork. Don't drink. Lift weights. And don't listen to influencer bro's who doesn't know how to cite studies without getting flamed online.
Lots of great points here, thank you for adding this to the discussion
Like the other comment, this guy is off-base in my personal experience and I've dug into these diet fads for 4-5 years now. A salesman. I got lured into the keto/carni world and it drove up my LDL-C from a lifetime in the 80s and 90s to 175. Freaked my doc because of bloodwork last year enough to push me to a cardiologist in a couple of days. Even my liver enzymes pointed to fatty liver at my ideal weight and 12% body fat. It was a chore to surf without cramps... odd cramps and spasms in the lower legs all the time. Even working hard on electrolytes. The most proven diet is plant-centric with perhaps some fish (medditeranean). I went lowish fat pescatarian to work out the fat in my liver from keto and my LDL-C when from 175 to 60 in 3 months. Every single health metric went ideal and body fat dropped to 10%. Never have cramps surfing now. Super stable weight (5'10" 165 lb). Zero inflammation. Surfing feels like I'm in a grom body literally. Lucky to have a big year-round garden and now only eat fish I catch otherwise vegetarian for health and reducing carbon footprint. High saturated fat diets and high red meat diet in particular are a dangerous fad. Especially if you don't have some autoimmune or digestive issue. Unless perhaps if you can maintain low cholesterol levels. If you're LDL-C is rising into the mid-100s it's a huge warning sign. Need to watch AST and ALT liver enzymes too. Not enough carbs and you rely on your liver for glucose all the time. Can raise your fasting blood glucose to prediabetes levels and put you in a state of insulin resistance. Just my experience.
Sounds like an amazing experience, and in line with the majority of personal anecdotes we hear. Thanks for listening with an open mind and commenting with your experience!

@scott I got a Gemini twin from Jeff who lives here in Bali. I also got a pickle fork from Ryan this year. They are nothing alike, at all, in any way. Ok ok - except for having 2 pointies up front. But I don’t think they really have the same intention or share any design principles. They are both wonderful, and wonderfully strange looking. The pickle twin is hands down, the most high performance board I have ever surfed - it’s far outside of my comfort zone, but that’s not to say it isn’t amazing to surf. And for the record @DLS he can make them for mortals too - I went for a step up version @6’6” and he pumped mine up a bit to 19” x 2 7/16”. When there’s a bit of shape and energy in the ocean, it flies, and is incredibly responsive. One of the most unusual and exciting boards I’ve tried *end scene
End scene hahaha thanks for the comment!
Another great episode! Never thought the day would come when being a meat-head is the way to a healthy lifestyle. This definitely fits the bill for me. Thanks Dave!
Great interview! I grew up in HB and surfing was my life for many decades. I am now 53yrs old and have been blessed to experience a "flow state" in surfing, snow boarding, and mountain biking the local canyons and wetlands. It is intoxicating!! It is also addicting!! I sometimes refer to it as, "spontaneous combustion of stoke!" Thanks for sharing!!
You have the stoke John, now spread it!!
@ Great point. The only thing better than being in a flow state is being in it with others. Share the stoke!!
We were selling WTs clear sanded finish thrusters for $235 at windansea surf shop in HB all day long 83,84 ish
Those were the days
what is up David Scales? You and I were surf buddies wayyyyy back in the day. Cool to see your podcast buddy
Awesome What's your name?
@SurfSplendor I'll give you some hints. We went to high school together for like a year or 2 and I ran into you at trestles randomly one time. I also remember your dad took us to old mans once. We were pretty good friends for a while 😂😂
The guy that says vegetables are bad for you…. Next
They are. So is ignoring evidence.
Great discussion. The Hello Fresh advertisment about kale salad was a bit ironic given Paul's stance on kale lol
😂

Yeah I really wanted Brad to make that floater. It was still a ballzy move.
I find beer is very healthy for me, especially if non pastueurized, maybe non filtered, and generally below 4.8%. It's not about drinking a lot, it's about drinking modestly for health,… not for getting tipsy or drunk or for being social, it's just a good healthy beverage. I find wine not so good for me. I'm social without drinking. Beer is a just a great beverage as has been for thousands of years in agrarian society, and others.
@@bonsummers2657 It is unfortunate that someone, with administrative rights, deleted my reply. For the sake of those who do not know, please understand that ALCOHOL, not beer, is toxic to every cell your body. This is a fact. If anyone knows a recognized institution that says otherwise, please let me know.
Popeye is 1930's, 1933-1957 was the main run of Popeye.
I do best with plant and animal products. Prudent omnivore for the win. Besides fruit, as long as not too sweet or too acid, plants/veggies I do well with: radishes, asteraceae leafy greens, some cruciferae greens, some apiaceae greens, rarely other veggies. If dairy, usually truly raw is best for me, rarely do I have non-truly-raw. Avoid homogenized, avoid pasteurized milk,… if you have the choice, means, and budget. Especially true beyond about age 40; below that age you've got more intrinsic 'youth hormones' which over-power less ideal eating. And main thing, do what works well for you within your means/budget.
Paying attention to your body and adjusting as needed works best. Agreed
Please ask Brad to do his OCCY impersonation.
Next time!!

In the process of Clint building a new board for me and I can tell you that he is genuine , sincere and gifted in ways that others simply can’t understand. Very excited about this project and a new friend! Great podcast too ! Subscribed
Congrats on the board and thank for subscribing!
On the style of surfing topic, I think you are trying to separate new school and old school. I think the best surfers need to have both of them. A good combination of power surfing and innovation in the air. Old school, on rail surfing will never go out of style. Surfing is on the wave, the airs are a bonus. By the way, I think Dane Reynolds is up there in the best surfing done on a Burch pickle fork.
Super good explanations here, thank you
When did Dane surf a pickle fork?

@@BYS_LIFE you’re not wrong!
I always like his surfing. He was smooth and lanky. His backside floaters are unmatched.
Totally agree! Did you ever wear the web gloves? 🧤
Great pod
Thanks stereo!
