Okay push back….when you fast food…eventually you won’t actually hunger. Your body releases another hormone. When you cut out food groups, you hunger the whole time. Reminds you dependence on Father. Also, let’s be careful not to be pharisacal. Also, fasting, is very important I agree.

When Jesus said this kind only by prayer and fasting... Interpretation of Dan Mohler... by fasting you are denying your flesh... and that gets enough of YOU out of the equation for the spirit in you and God to operate.

    Great show, thanks.
I was addicted to Diet Coke for decades but one day I went on a 21 day fast where we fasted our favorite indulgences. First 3 days were tough but I made it through and was completely set free! Been 15 years, Thank you Lord🙌🏼
There’s also what I’ve heard people call a “Fasted Lifestyle” where you eat but don’t overdo it, you may watch TV but don’t binge watch, same with all things that can be taken to excess. This restraint is done to the Lord, assisted by His Spirit. You could also call it a Spirit led life.
Personally I sense the presence of God significantly stronger when I live this way. Also it causes me to go to Him more often when anxious, bored or lonely and all I want to do is eat or shop. Still growing in this.
If you haven’t tried fasting I recommend you try it once and enjoy the huge benefits it brings.

Lol same here, I guess I haven't technically been fasting since I was doing the Daniel "mourning". Maybe it isn't fasting but I've loved learning how I don't really need the things I always thought I needed, the self-control that's been growing in me + dependence on the Holy Spirit has been pretty sweet fruit. I wonder if there's a genuinely noticeable difference with real fasting beyond more intense hunger, if so I've gotta sign up.

I have to disagree with you about your definition of fasting and how you derived it. You say Daniel was not fasting bc the word fasting was not used. However, the word fasting was also not used in Ex 34, 32, 35 or Lev. 9 and 10. In these chapters Moses went without food or water 40 consecutive days three times. However, the word fast is never used. Therefore, according to your logic, Moses did not fast because the Bible does not use the word fast in reference to Moses. As in the Daniel passages you reference, Moses's decision to refrain from certain foods and beverages (all of them) was described but not labeled a fast. Be careful about making an argument based solely up vocabulary. Vocabulary alone is not always sufficient. Defining terms is important, but as I Tim 6 warns, arguing about the meaning of words can also be problematic. Isaiah 58 is a sobering passage about proper fasting. It extends the definition further than withholding food and water. Your arguments that people sometimes fast silly things (I.e. caviar) is not an argument that those fasts are not legitimate because they are not fasts. They are not legitimate because they demean fasting. They make a game out of it. They reduce fasting to matter of "mere externals." What legitimizes a fast is not what one denies oneself but the heart and attitude one possesses when one fasts. When Isaiah and Jesus rebuke improper fasting, neither quibble over whether the definition of fasting was externally followed. They go directly to the heart of the faster or the presence of corroborating fasts of behavior, attitude, and justice in the life of the faster. I commend to you John Piper's thorough treatment of the subject in his book A Hunger for God. Other helpful resources are Jentezen Franklin's book Fasting and Susan Gregory's resources on the Daniel fast. Experientially, I have engaged in many types of fasts: food, food and water, Daniel, social media, and other. I've never gone on a fast of any type that I didn't find beneficial. The best fast to go on at any given time is the fast the Lord calls you too. I submit to you that encouraging people to seek the Lord to include fasting into their lives regularly, often, and in a variety of means is a better path to follow than to encourage them to hold to a narrow definition. The important thing is to seek first his kingdom.

I agree very much with the concept of voluntary weakness. I also would say denial of flesh. And I would say a display of desperation. David said he would not say sacrifice anything to God that cost him nothing. It s putting your money where your mouth is. Especially on the long fasts. The importunate prayer.

I think you misinterpret Isaiah 58 here. He doesn’t seem to be saying how to literally fast and what fasting from food accomplishes; he instead says more important than a day of starving is a lifestyle of charity and justice and God fearing humility. That this is true fasting in the realest sense. Very similar to the kinds of things Jesus taught about tithing… you should have focused more on this etc etc.

I’d like to point out that Jesus fasted 40 days BEFORE BEGINNING HIS MINISTRY: He is our example. That was an act of dedication TO THE FATHER’S agenda and an example of subjugation of His own will to that of THE FATHER’S. THAT’S the reason for fasting.

The Isaiah 58 list lines up perfectly with the effect that being in ketosis has on cognitive function.
When in ketosis, assuming a fast is going well, there tends to be greater mental focus and clarity, less distractibility or competing/racing thoughts, and lower anxiety. So physical effects that logically are conducive to spiritual benefits including potentially better overall prayer/a better ability to hear from God with clarity/ better ability to make wise but maybe tough decisions etc.

The "prayer and fasting" comment by Jesus is in Mark 9:29 as well. In variant manuscripts, only fasting is removed in Mark. The devil is trying to hide this and many other things in the new translations. Edit: I am glad you addressed Mark 9. Two games of telephone with the same end miscommunication seems rather suspicious to me

This thought came to me and so here's the question/thought: They couldn't achieve the task casting the demon out of the child because of an apparent lack of prayer and fasting. (Here was my thought) Jesus had not yet taken back all authority. Our Lord had not yet died, been buried and rose again. And they had not yet received the Holy Spirit like they would have "post" resurrection. Surely the difference lies within these two different sequences in time. Right?

That said, biblically; as in what the text is saying - it makes little sense since after Jesus told the disciples that this kind goes out by fasting and prayer, he continued to cast it out and the boy got free.
In that sense, it was not a receipe for a boy but advice for the men. That said, the verse (Matthew 17:21) is not there in most translations.

In this video you debate whether fasting may refer to other things besides food or not. I recently read what Jesus said about marriage that the man “shall hold fast to his wife” Matt 19:5. In other words he is forsaking or abstaining from all others. I think maybe all faithfulness inherently includes some form of fasting, but not necessarily food.

Your doctor doesn’t understand ketosis. Were your blood ketones measured? I bet not. When in ketosis, blood sugar is irrelevant. Your body is operating on ketones. On a fast, low blood sugar would be a concern for someone who hasn’t transitioned into ketosis because their body is still running on glucose.
One reason that you may not look good on a fast is you’re burning fat. What many people don’t know is that your body will store toxins in fat. When you burn the fat, the toxins are released back into your blood stream.
During a fast, your body cleans out the cells too. Also, gets rid of bad proteins - called autophagy.
You can use keto sticks to see if you’re in ketosis. Meters also exist to measure it. Some blood sugar meters (for diabetics) will also measure ketones.

Maybe there's a fast in more liturgical churches- Orhtodox, Lutheran, Catholic- on that day, as those denominations (and some others) have a lot of holy days not necessarily in the bible directly. October 31t is "reformation Day" the deemed "start" day of the reformation. And, of course, the month of "October" didn't exist in bible times and culture anyway, lol.

What is wrong with literally fasting? You guys open this video with a mockery of what it is to fast and pray.
There is nothing wrong with denying the flesh in order to consecrate ourselves before God. Jesus Himself did it and taught it. Do you not think that He meant and did what He said, and yet He is God incarnate? He also has complete power and authority over ever spirit, in heaven and in earth.
You use as your premise, textual criticism, and put God's Word in question.
I'm familiar with the arguments, and most of what I hear has no validity, and the newer translations, the NLT, the NIV, tamper with God's Word, taking out part of John 8:1-11...
It's pitiful that we have allowed this to happen.
God's Word has power, and Jesus said, not one י or . will disappear from God's Word, until it is all fulfilled.
I would also suggest you research Panin who did a mathematical study of the Hebrew text and the Greek text, all inclusive of the verses you guys leave out at the end of Mark 16.
What is pathetic is that the church and believers will easily take your word instead of studying for themselves.
I have heard scholars attack the KJV, while they will gulp down Shakespeare.
