Maybe one day, retrospect will hold Mays as one of the greatest - sort of underappreciated during his time like so many important composers.

This album was a stunning experience for me. I understood the greatness of this master not only on keyboard playing but especially on composition. I've been listening great music during the last 35 years, from soul to jazz to classic and I can say that Lyle Mays is a giant of modern music...I'm so sad he passed away

Assolutamente d'accordo... Andai letteralmente in estasi....

Such haunting music. I was born at Elemndorf Air Base, in Alaska in 1953. My mom said Alaska was beautiful!! And so is this suite

Tremendous talent. Saw Lyle when he was with Pat Metheny in the early 80s, the one time they performed in Victoria, BC. Watched the first show - then went right to the box office and bought tickets to the second show, starting an hour later. Magic.

One of my favourite compositions.... absolutely superb pianist and composer Lyle who was the cornerstone for guitarist Pat Metheny and his group... I will be playing this for a long long time... the 70s and 80s were the musical times for me... what more can I say for Lyle, he was simply wonderful and creative, good that I have his music ....Malcolm Hopkinson in Toronto, Nov 2023

For me this is one of the ten most beautiful musical incursions in the history of modern jazz and this record, which I have on vinyl is a masterpiece of Jazz... Lyle is a genius and it's no wonder he paired it with another "point out of curve"...the genius Pat Metheny.

the run-up to, and the actual change (at 8:58 ) is the most sublime ever recorded, imo. and i like my changes. definitely the centerpiece of the suite. also, i can't get enough of Frisell here. literally. he's used sparingly as a counterpoint, to the degree that gets me practically begging for more... but i don't ever quite *get* more. in other words, perfectly. Lyle Mays was a genius lost too soon, and his Alaskan Suite is a tour de force; a masterpiece.

No disrespect but Lyle always seemed to look quite frail. Him and Pat their compositions (kind of always sounded harmonically in the same bag chord wise and rhymically the same. Lyle was a genius acoustic pianist. Metheny's first album with Jaco was his best. The same with San Lorenzo.
