pat metheny really is one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time. super excited to listen to moondial as ive listened to all the other stuff hes put out + his pat metheny group records. this man is truly an innovator and an idol figure of many generations
I think he’s one of the greatest guitarists period. Even if you can’t get behind the jazz language, any guitarist or even musician can’t deny how amazing his playing (not even mentioning him as a composer) and technical skill. Not to mention just how unique is sound is

Once again, Pat proves his artistry and shows what a visionary he is in music. His latest album is a true palette of sonic colors, with incredibly rich harmonies, meticulously refined in every detail. It is a treasure trove of inspiration for every guitarist and composer writing for the guitar. I am grateful to be living in a time when Pat Metheny is creating music. Thank you.
Pat, many years ago, as a young jazz guitar wannabe, I bought "Bright Size Life" and knew that you had a place in the pantheon, because your sound was instantly identifiable. (My guitar heroes at the time were Joe Pass, George Benson, Larry Carlton, and the three Kings: BB, Albert, and Freddy. I also had many blues harmonica heroes.) Part of it, back then, was your fondness for a certain kind of deep delay/reverb. But you also had a completely unique spidery touch that I only found, a decade later, in Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Championship table tennis players speak reverently about "touch"; you've always had that thing. In the summer of '77, as a 19-year old student in the summer jazz session at Berklee, I went out with the other young guitar hotheads, on our first evening in town, to a club where Steve Morse was just finishing up a set--followed by you, opening up for Pat Martino. Needless to say, our head gaskets were blown. Fast forward how many years....and RUclips's algorithm spat one of your video performances from those days into my laptop. "Pat Metheny," I thought. "I wonder what he's doing now." And I found this video. Of course I noticed--because we OCD types notice--that the opening shot of your fingers on the fingerboard weren't synced up with the soundtrack. But no matter: your blues have deepened over the years, and I was completely taken with your description of how different it is to stop mid-tour and jump into the studio because there's rich new music happening and it needs to be captured. I'm taking you on faith. I just jumped onto Amazon and bought the CD, happy to trust in your vision. And here's the thing: I know I won't be disappointed. Thanks for doing what you do.
Saw Pat in Gary Burton group with 2 bass players. Then bought Bright Size Life. then KRE, AM, Berkeley, played 1st PMG & I was hooked! San Lorenzo became their most requested song that year! Saw the group live; then the Joni line up, & more!

I was just reading the notes on the vinyl copy I just got, (signed, thanks!!), and listening to the first tracks, and you are absolutely right, is the "mellow" sound that can give you company at night, and any moment you just want to sit down and listen. I saw Pat on the last tour - he joked about talking more during these shows (solo) than he ever had before. I really enjoyed hearing from him. I'll order the CD today - since we no longer have local 'record stores.'

Love all of the group, trio, duo and large ensemble projects but for me there is no greater listening experience in the world than Pat Metheny in solo acoustic guitar mode, it is an amazing journey
I feel so privileged to be able to immerse myself in such music magic. With Pat’s music it does not matter how many time a track or album is listened to, there is always something new to hear because the arrangements, the improvisation and the playing is so nuanced, sublimely beautiful. @@heavymetalmusictheory Actually, the album "From This Place" won a Grammy award in 2021, and Lyle didn't contribute to that one at all. I wish we would stop comparing Pat and Lyle and let Pat continue to do what he does, because he has so many blessings to share with people all around the world. Gwillam Simcock was the piano player on "From This Place", and he really shined, plus he's played with Pat before as well.

From what he says, the *guitar tuning* must be the following then: *B1 E2 A3 D4 F#3 B3* This yields a 2-voiced instrument, effectively: 2 strings in the bass register + 4 strings in the mid (with the cluster F# A B D!)... Brilliant!
I believe he described it from the stage during the Dreambox tour as a string trio: two bass strings -> cello, middle -> violin, upper -> viola. As a result it leads to e very different way of playing that almost requires three voice counterpoint.

I can feel Charlie’s presence in the bottom end of the tunes and the tone of this guitar. There’s a good reason why you had this guitar built Sir Pat. There’s a beautiful gentle spirit here that in some incomprehensible way suggests this is not just a solo album.
Nine days long in Tokyo at the great blue note during the "solo tour". He every night explain this new guitar and others of course. The end of any concerts was withe the GR 300 and the orchestrion. I every night waiting ouside the exit for meet him but for some mistakes of the crew somethings gone wrong. I'm from Neaples buti live in Japan for 26 years and follow this legend for 55 years starts in Neaples at the teatro tenda. One of the loving side of this legend is the "teach". He explain all of this creative and innovative music. This is beautiful. Thank you my friend Pat for anything and I hope to see soon without mistakes.
Love this dude since the early 80s when I discovered him. Have seen him in concert twice. Most recently in Chicago’s Thalia Hall (great acoustic room) October 2023. He shared so many nuggets it is awe inspiring! Keep it up Pat!

At my 59 I have token off the word "idol" from my dictionary now. Pat is an "inspiration" to me, not to giving up searching for a little beauty, so forgotten in our collapsed civilization. 1st time I had the opportunity to seeing him on stage, live, was in 1996, Brasília, the capital of Brazil, where I was born. The last, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2013, when I had to catch an airbus to do so. I could not miss such rare opportunity. I saw a Brazilian friend of him on the lounge of the theater, Toninho Horta, guitarrist and composer who joined the "Clube da Esquina", a couple of friends that used to play together, and Pat did a lovely solo as aways on his unique style, tone abs phrases, on the song "Manuel o audaz", back in 1980. 😀😀

Most of the time 2, or max.5 favorite songs on the Album. Pat's first record where sorting out was not possible to me. Each song somehow special. So it had to be the whole Album. Congratulations Pat! Great!

14 fret, looks like an adjustable bridge for individual strings...any idea what the scale length is? Seems normalish. Have always loved Pat's playing and his live shows are not to be missed.
I agree and I think I get your point. I consider myself a serious musician who has dedicated their entire life to writing and creating music in the jazz genre similar to Pat. But I had to hold down 2 jobs, work on my automobile, (grease wrenches) chainsaw trimming trees, plumbing, electrical problems, paying for 3 kids to go to school, doing construction work, playing shitty bars, having to have cuts on my fingers, broken knuckles, bruises, and what not. My point is, all Pat has been doing his entire life is playing guitar, 320 days a year, concerts, guitar techs making sure his strings are in tune, making everything perfect for a guy that can spend every minute of his life playing and writing. What about the rest of us? Did we ever get the chance? Would any one of us be better than Pats music if we were ever given a chance instead of having to survive and do chores getting very limited time to do what we love also? To me the guy has never worked a job, invested in family time, had any real interests besides himself. He never had to cut his hands or fingers, for over 50 years, just walks on stage to applause, people worship and adore him, and never even realize how fortunate he is, and the rest of my extremely talented friends who are musicians, they can’t find 30 minutes in the week to play their instruments. I don’t think what he is producing is any better than Kenny G who he has in the past insulted to an extreme level, pure inhumane trashing and insulting as if he thinks he is the greatest musician on the planet. I mean really, what is so special about what he is doing? I use to think he was something, but not anymore.
Your the victim of your own surcomstance be the change why suffer living in the past is an issue for ya. Pat is doing something he loves in the moment He could point out all the issues that arise from being a dad having a family being on tour living in a new bed every night etc. etc. etc. We know what your Brian is suffering from where is your heart and soul be the change whining will always make you suffer and comparing what other stories that justify your state of living in the past the best

I'm from Neaples buti live in Japan for 26 years and follow this legend for 55 years starts in Neaples at the teatro tenda. One of the loving side of this legend is the "teach". Love this dude since the early 80s when I discovered him. Have seen him in concert twice. Most recently in Chicago’s Thalia Hall (great acoustic room) October 2023. He shared so many nuggets it is awe inspiring! Keep it up Pat!

At my 59 I have token off the word "idol" from my dictionary now. Pat is an "inspiration" to me, not to giving up searching for a little beauty, so forgotten in our collapsed civilization. 1st time I had the opportunity to seeing him on stage, live, was in 1996, Brasília, the capital of Brazil, where I was born. The last, in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, 2013, when I had to catch an airbus to do so. I could not miss such rare opportunity. I saw a Brazilian friend of him on the lounge of the theater, Toninho Horta, guitarrist and composer who joined the "Clube da Esquina", a couple of friends that used to play together, and Pat did a lovely solo as aways on his unique style, tone abs phrases, on the song "Manuel o audaz", back in 1980. 😀😀
Depuis des dizaines d'années, je ne me lasse pas de ces petits modules que vous faites pour présenter vos nouvelles compositions et improvisations. C'est chaque fois un plaisir frais et inédit. J'ai en tête le souvenir de l'EPK qui introduisait l'Orchestrion pour la première fois en 2010, c'était la même impatience. D'ailleurs, je suis allé voir et entendre ça sans coup férir au Palais des Congrès de Nantes au début de la tournée mondiale, en janvier ou février de cette année-là, si ma mémoire est bonne. Merci pour toutes ces années de pur plaisir, Pat.

14 fret, looks like an adjustable bridge for individual strings...any idea what the scale length is? Seems normalish. Have always loved Pat's playing and his live shows are not to be missed.

I find it extraordinarily hard to believe that in 2 1/2 weeks, Pat Metheny - the wunderkind from Lee’s Summit - will turn 70.

I agree and I think I get your point. I consider myself a serious musician who has dedicated their entire life to writing and creating music in the jazz genre similar to Pat. But I had to hold down 2 jobs, work on my automobile, (grease wrenches) chainsaw trimming trees, plumbing, electrical problems, paying for 3 kids to go to school, doing construction work, playing shitty bars, having to have cuts on my fingers, broken knuckles, bruises, and what not. My point is, all Pat has been doing his entire life is playing guitar, 320 days a year, concerts, guitar techs making sure his strings are in tune, making everything perfect for a guy that can spend every minute of his life playing and writing.
What about the rest of us? Did we ever get the chance? Would any one of us be better than Pats music if we were ever given a chance instead of having to survive and do chores getting very limited time to do what we love also?
To me the guy has never worked a job, invested in family time, had any real interests besides himself. He never had to cut his hands or fingers, for over 50 years, just walks on stage to applause, people worship and adore him, and never even realize how fortunate he is, and the rest of my extremely talented friends who are musicians, they can’t find 30 minutes in the week to play their instruments.
I don’t think what he is producing is any better than Kenny G who he has in the past insulted to an extreme level, pure inhumane trashing and insulting as if he thinks he is the greatest musician on the planet.
I mean really, what is so special about what he is doing? I use to think he was something, but not anymore.
