Your memory quilt is very beautiful. I love the way you did it. I am confused though as you called it a T-shirt quilt and from what I could see none of the shirts were actual T-shirts. They looked like woven button down shirts? If that is what they were, they would not need any stabilizer, correct? The stabilizer is used on T-shirts because they are a knit fabric, not woven, and they stretch. The stabilizer keeps them from stretching.
Hey, Marcia! You definitely make an excellent point! There were a few regular shirts here but mostly button down. I make a lot of puzzle piece quilts with regular t-shirts. I don’t use any stabilizer on the puzzle quilts, even with the knit fabrics. I definitely could relabel this tutorial as ‘Button Down Memory Quilt’ which I didn’t think to do lol. I didn’t want to deter people from using this pattern if they had plain shirts instead of button downs.
Just ordered my pattern on itsy, can't wait to get started i must have watch you video a 1000 times just to make sure. Im a beginner. On the blocks do I use a stabilizer or can I use the heat and Bond? Because I have mixed shirts and a few tshirts as well. And I already cut the blocks I hope thats ok 🤦🏽 please advise.
@@annarivera4636 hey!! Great question. I’m so excited for you to get started! On the blocks (if you want to) use the stabilizer. You can square them up again after fusing if you need to. Save the heat n bond for the hearts ❤️. Let me know if I can help more!
@southernsewingco thank you so much for responding. I will keep you posted. I don't have the fussing stuff so I'll have to go look tomorrow and get some.
Thank you so much for sharing this! I am such a visual person that it is hard to just follow a pattern. This is so helpful. Getting ready to make 3 of these quilts for my clients. One question, did you end up using 4 yards of backing for each quilt like the pattern calls for?
Hey!! Thanks for your comment! I can’t quite remember if I used the full 4 yards…but I looked back at the pattern and did some math. I maybe got away with 3.75” but you really can use the full 4 if you’re long arming! Hope this helps.
Hey! I actually found this pattern on Etsy and figured I would share how I used it to create this. Here’s a link! www.etsy.com/listing/959784020/ thank you for watching!!
@Southern Sewing Co. thank you, I've purchased it & will finally be able to make the quilts from Dad's shirts for my sisters & brother......nothing spoke to me before I saw this one. Thank you again 💙
I don’t! I think the fraying is a naturally beautiful part of the quilt! In my experience, it takes people a long time to wash a quilt (and me too!). I generally don’t mention it, and let it be a thing they experience! For the name quilts in example, I’ve sent out hundreds of these. I never hear anything negative about the fraying! Don’t let this deter you from washing first if you want!
Hi Ashley I'm back at working on my father's quilt. I have a question. For the borders it says 6 inches wide but no length. It says for border lengths. Sure what that means.?
Hey! I'll have to pull up my pattern...but I think I estimated the width on the top and bottom, sewed those on, then evened them up...then guesstimated the other 2 edge's length and sewed those on. The finally just squared everything up. I hope this makes sense! I'll look back at my pattern and see if I can figure something else out here.
@@yukonswimmom hey! For this quilt I used a mix of several different types of shirts! Tshirt Quilt is a much easier phrase to use in a title lol. I have made this type of quilt and many puzzle pieced design quilts made with T-shirts only turn out wonderfully.
In the beginning of the video, you showed a photo of the pattern and said you need 24 t-shirt blocks; however, I'm only seeing 20 in the photo. Just curious if you're using 24 blocks to make a difference size than what is pictured. Thanks for your tutorial :)
Hey, Darlene! Great question. I had to refer back to the pattern to make sure I didn’t make a mistake lol. It seems as though maybe the pattern calls for 24 blocks so that the creator has a little wiggle room for design with the block placement? Or even to use the blocks for the hearts. Sorry for the confusion there! I should have caught that!
Beautiful quilt, but take care if you are using actual t-shirts you MUST stabilize before cutting. She is using cotton or cotton blend shirt fabric. I have made a number of t-shirt quilts. She did a wonderful job on the memory quilt.
Haha, I get this comment a lot! While many of the shirts I used for this quilt aren't 't-shirts', this pattern is definitely a good one if you have them! I've made another version with t-shirts and it turned out equally as nice. Happy quilting!

@@trishkaking I'm so happy to hear that! I know your quilt will turn out beautifully!
Do you usually wash the top before you gift it so that the edges are frayed or do you just tell the person that will happen after washing?
