If you don't use tomato paste very often, you can freeze it in ice cube trays to save it. Measure how much you put into each cube so you can thaw just what you need. Vacuum sealing the cubes after you take them out of the tray is better than a ziplock for preventing ice crystals.
Thank you for adding this tip. I have a #10 can of tomato paste that I’ve been wanting to open and dehydrate. I will put it in ice cube trays and once frozen will freeze dry in our dryer. Portioned like that I will know how much I am using when I go to rehydrate it. Thanks!

There are usually only 6-12 tall skinning boxes hidden on the top shelf in the International Food section. It keeps longer in the refrig after opening the tube. Less spoilage, because of exposure to the air.

Made beef and barley soup dry mix. Added 1/8 cup of tomato powder In the jar on top of the seasonings in the jar. Now I have 2 cups of canned meat in one jar and the soup mix in a pint jar for my meals. Awesomeness!!!!
Beef Barley is a favorite of mine. I've been using canned ground beef and Vegetable barley soup (recipe in an old canning book). I canned the Vegetable Barley soup for years before I found out grains are on the no-no for canning list. I'm happy to have an alternative.
thankyou for this lovely recipe RoseRed Pam I made your soap and used white beans that were soaked overnight as the meat substitute it turned out very well. I dont have a dehydrator yet but Ive been chopping up a carrot and onion and a celery and drying it in the oven at the end of every oven "session" by turning the oven down to 100 degrees centigrade. The carrots if cooked after a sweet dish has been in the oven are good to be used in quick carrot cakes. I never thought of any of this until I saw your channel.
Love beef barley soup. One of my absolute favorites. Thank you I will definitely be making up meals in bags for my family. I am not a canner but I am thinking a can of roast beef from the grocery store would work just as well. I love the butane stoves. I purchased my first 3 in the early 90s for $5 each. My sister does Freeze drying, and she did a bunch of trays of cooked barley for me to make up some of my r Beef Barley Soup. Pam, sorry for posting twice but we just finished one of our favorite soups and I thought you and Jim may like it and it might be OK for your meal in a bag. It's Southwestern Turkey soup (I make it from a roast turkey carcass and meat). It has onion, garlic, carrot, celery, broth, black beans, corn, sweet peppers and tomatoes with green chilies, plus whatever spices you prefer, I add smoked paprika. This would easily work with ground beef or your canned chicken. I don't know if drained beans would be best or maybe your fast beans if they hold together. I just use canned. Anyway, I've gotten so many good ideas from you I wanted to possibly return the favor. We put crushed corn or tortilla chips on top and let them mix in, kind of like you'd use masa and top with sour cream. Thank you to you and Jim for all you do.
I just made 5 of these the other day! I used 6 minute quick cook barley, powdered tomato and worchestshire, recipe didn’t include soy, and I skip the step of sautéing veggies. Firehouse Flavors is where I bought my powdered seasonings and I don’t think it’s much more expensive than the liquid. Especially when giving as a gift I prefer to make my jars ‘just add water’.
Instead of using a plastic baggie to keep items separated, would a coffee filter work? I love using my canned beef chunks for beef & barley soup. So yummy!
Amazon has Augason Farms Buttermilk Pancake Mix 3 lbs 4 oz No. 10 Can for $7.32 from $21! Many other items can be made from this mix besides pancakes. Good long term storage!
Pam, dehydrate or freeze dry your tomato paste. Then make it into a powder. To make the equivalent of 6 ounce can just add 1/4 cup of tomato powder to 1/4 to 1/2 cup hot water depending on the consistency you want. Powdered tomato paste would be perfect for these meals in a bag. If people can’t dehydrate or freeze dry tomatoes to make a powder then there are many good tomato powders online with just tomatoes as the ingredient. I’ve even made tomato sauce in a pinch with tomato powder.

LOL! If you have tomato powder on hand, you could use that instead.
Hi ! I just found your channel and I am really enjoying it !!
I am a newbee to dehydrating and you have helped me a lot.
Could you tell me little bit more about the celery and baking soda ?
I’ve never tried it before and my celery loses its color….
Thanks for all your hard work . Really appreciate it ❤❤❤
Thank you for finding our channel. Precooking the the celery and adding the baking soda helps maintain the color. Jim
Thank you for posting the recipe. I start to write it down as you go but then I get to "watching" and forget to be "writing" lol... Thanks so much...
I make a similar soup by subbing canned venison. Very rich!
Sounds great! Fantastic way to use venison.
Rose Red, would you please do a video on spices, how to tell which are best? Also, where can I get myself one of your "gadgets" please?
