Hubby loves any kind of beef soup,, now during the summer doing wonderful yard work , I put 2 home canned jars, some veggies in slow cooker , plugged in on the porch,, have when ever we like while sitting around looking at God’s beauty..👍❤️
If you have a dehydrator you can pre cook hulled barley, dehydrate it & it will rehydrate in the soup almost as fast as the quick barley. Hulled barley is cheaper & more filling than quick barley.
I made that mistake when I first started canning. As soon as I found out barley was a no I chucked them. This is one of my favorite soups. I put in carrots too.
I just had the beef barley soup with my canned jars. Flank steak, mushrooms and onions with quick cooking barley. I also add some beef granules, bay leaf, thyme and pepper. OH SO GOOD! ❤
One of the first soups that I canned was beef, vegetables, and barley soup from a recipe I found on Pintetest. It came out perfect, with no problems. The barley was added to the bottom or my pint jars, then adding everything else on top. It turned out amazing!!
@SuttonsDaze Just call me a rebel, Leisa. One of your favorite sayings comes to mind, "You do you!". I canned it over a year ago, and my guy and I are still enjoying it with no problems.
This just looks amazing. Phil looks like he is willing to risk it, being so hot. He looks like he really is enjoying his dinner. Another winner for sure.
I really like for jars lids havent had a failure yet. The edges of the lids can be very sharp though so be careful because ive cut my thumb pre washing them twice now.
Something else you could do with those jars of beef and mushroom goodness would be to add either a little cornstarch or your beef gravy mix and thicken it and then over potatoes or noodles. That's what I do with my cans dear a lot. We really like it over mashed potatoes noodles are good too.
Looks delicious! Not sure I like barley, ordering some & will definitely try! Thanks! Your knife is so sharp, I ordered one a couple of months ago(thank you) how do you sharpen? Love your videos! Phil is such a good taste tester!
I make chicken/celery and barley soup. I love the regular barley too. My family loves this soup and asks for it when they are sick. So can I use this method to can the chicken/celery/broth and add the barley as you did to prepare the soup for a meal?
Love beef and barley soup, the roast looks like an eye of the round, but you called it an arm roast, is arm another cut or the same, eyes tend to be dry and only good for roasting, how tender did it get after canning? Who cares right, Phil loved it.
I'm always amazed when you use that knife - it's like cutting through butter. Do you sharpen it regularly? My brother is a chef and he recently brought his whetstone to my house and sharpened my knives for me and wow - what a HUGE diffrence that made! But I know that over time, they're going to dull again. Your knife doesn't ever seem to be dull!!
I canned some quarts of beef stew 2 years ago and have eaten a couple of jars. When I canned it, I went by the "meat time" of 90 minutes (filled 1/3 of the jar with solids and the rest with broth). Should I dump the remaining jar? I thought you always used the longest time for ingredients (so meat would be the longest). BTW, that soup looks delicious! I've never eaten barley, but it is going on my list!
Think about five minutes was mentioned but its a quick cook..Cannot seem to find it here so I usually rinse "normal" barley, cover with boiling water then leave overnight.
This looks yummy. Going to make some this week. However, will replay the video with ear buds in. When I play over speaker, my dogs hear your pups whine in the background and they lose their minds! LOL
What happened to the kitchen stove you had? I love barley. I make a good size instant pot batch of regular cook barley and freeze it up in meal size packages for my canned meat soups. Very easy to thaw.
Why couldnt you can with barley? I have bought beef barley soup for years at the store and I love the barley in that soup. Just curious, Im new to canning.
Beef barley soup is my absolute favorite but I've never had it with mushrooms. A must try on my next batch! I'm new to canning and really enjoy your channel. I haven't taken the time to look it up so I guess I'm looking for an "easy" answer. Why can't you can barley?
Do you have a recipe you can share with us for this soup? I’m not sure I remember how much barley you added or when. So a recipe you kinda went from. Please reply
Can you can this with a little brown lentils in the jar? I can no longer eat barley since being diagnosed with celiac disease but I miss the earthy savory flavours of the barley. Is it safe to can with them in the jar at this process time and would this change the headspace? I tried adding to the pot when you made the barley but the lentils didn't really pickup any of the flavours like it normally would have if cooked with the other ingredients. My family loves the beef and barley soup so I'm hoping to make a compromise where I could ladle out a portion for me and add barley for the rest of them.
Serious question. Now, I am 70 and have been canning for 50++ years. But only pressure canning, to which I am addicted, for 2 years. So, do you actually boil for 10 to 20 minutes depending on contents before eating it ?? ?

Love beef barley soup! I used ground beef when I was making the soup for my father, in his 90s and he wanted it everyday
Ordered the knife! Watching you cut up the meat so easily in your videos I just couldn't resist
Looks yummy! Frozen mixed vegetables could also be added when heating it up for a vegetable beef and barley soup, too!
Super hearty
Love that idea! Extra nutrition and delicious tasting I'm sure.
Thank you for the lesson…It looks great!!!
But!
Is anyone else here salivating over that knife?!?!
😂😂😂
That looks like my next meal in a jar project. Hubby won’t likely eat it but his dad lives with us (91!) and he’d love it.
If you have a dehydrator you can pre cook hulled barley, dehydrate it & it will rehydrate in the soup almost as fast as the quick barley. Hulled barley is cheaper & more filling than quick barley.
Give Phil a gold star! He works hard for these cameos!
Best part of the video was the 😋 taste test love, his head nodding🤗
That looked amazing, and I am sitting on about 600 wide mouth lids and 400 small mouth. I will be ordering more in July. Thanks as always.
Thanks, Leisa. You have such a calm and caring voice I find I learn more. Thank you for still sharing with us newbies. ❤❤❤
Awe, thank you
I saw the sparkle in Phil's eyes to confirm the amount of barley was just right!
I cook barley and then freeze it. That way I can break off a chunk when I am ready to cook my canned soup.
Beef barley is one of my all time favorite soups ❤
Yup been stocking up i have around 800 lids. I order once a month
Bless Phil’s heart…he loves all your food!! He’s just the sweetest! You are a lucky woman, Leisa! 🥰
I love that you showed how to can and then how to use in the same video! Would love to see more like this!
Ah yum ! Now I guess I’m cracking open a jar of beef stew I canned for dinner tonight 😂. Your such an enabler 😜
I try hahaha
Thus is definitely a must do canning session for me. Time to go grocery shopping.
I didn’t know you can’t can Barley! Love the look of making this soup! 😊
Grains are a huge canning no no.
I made that mistake when I first started canning. As soon as I found out barley was a no I chucked them. This is one of my favorite soups. I put in carrots too.
All my favorite channels always make me hungry.

If this is your favorite soup then I have to try it.

And I can corn beef! Not approved, except for Leisa 😉 and me! Sometimes you have to go outside the box, even though nobody has given permission 😂

Hi 😊 Some how I missed the recipe ? I got the beef from watching but not any thing else !

Arm roast

Going to try this with pork hubby can’t eat red meat due to gout
Good to see Phil get a proper sized sample 😂😂😂
Yeah, I try to feed him once a week 🤣🤣

You cannot replicate commercial at home, 2 different processes. Significantly different equipment needed

Ok....note to self. Don't can grains!
Do forjar canning lids have to be bought online or are they sold in any stores?
I’ve never used barley… how much??? 1/2 cup ? When ya haven’t used it before it’s hard to know how much…, looks great!
Add a 1/4 cup and adjust from there

Did you use fresh mushrooms or commercially canned mushrooms? Sorry for such a goofy question.
Cooked fresh mushrooms

Never, because I go by the book. Can it properly and its totally unnecessary
I want want to make this soup ..
Wounder if quinoa would ruin the taste for lower carbs?I've never tried the stuff.
It would be good!
No onions??... 😢.. My heart is sad.
No but seriously, this is a great soup soup base! ☺
Could I do the same soup with pork instead? I have three pork picnic hams that I bought on sale $.99#.
Absolutely
How do you know if it's syphoned too much to be unsafe
Liquid must be half or more
That's pretty
Okay raw shrooms will work.
My finger happens to be 3 inches so not hunting for a measuring tape or yard stick.😅
Why cant you can barley?
It's a grain, you cannot safely can grains
Yum! but that burner is way too big for that saucepan. Waste of energy and dangerous.
Thank you for your thoughts.
