Just to throw in my 2 cent, I bought one of these when I was in Brazil and tried it out in person before buying it (certainly wouldn't buy such an expensive pen without trying out first and closely examining it) and I was convinced right away enough to buy it on the spot (after checking prices online first of course). The nib is more smooth than my Visconti Michelangelo true blue's dreamtouch nib which I've always thought was already an extremely smooth nib. Good flex, decent wetness (I got a medium size nib) and buttery smooth; can write with no pressure whatsoever.
About time you did a review of this one. :D I have the Anello Classic Ebony Black, it is my only fountain pen. Difference between the Titanium and Ebony Black is the Ebony is made of wood pieces instead of titanium, they have also given the nib both Yellow and White gold rather then complete white.
I have to agree with everything you said about it. I will add it really is quite a wet pen. I have both Salor Black and Waterman Southsea Blue / Inspired Blue. Both run really well within the pen.
The pen as you said is really top heavy. That lid is made from metal so on the back of the pen it does throw you off quite a lot. The pens converter system works really well and the pen boasts a lifetime warranty, which was something I quite liked. It makes you feel even though you spent $600 Australian Dollars on a pen, GVFC believes in the quality of its products. I was set on a Mont Blanc until I found out they have a 2 year warranty...
Great review, great video. And glad you have reviewed my pen.
I'm glad you enjoyed the review!
I own a few classics and Anellos and I've had one scratchy nib by the rest have been great. I have to say though that although I am a huge GvF-C fan, particularly of their design aesthetic, I find the nibs on the classics a little uninspiring to write with. The nibs on the intuition platino pens are absolutely fantastic though. They're steady and firm when writing gently and flex brilliantly when that's what you want. I actually had a double broad for a while that was a perfect calligraphy pen. I feel like I should sell my classics and buy a couple more of those instead.
As one brand new to fountain pen appreciation, take this comment for what it is worth---your reviews are always well done and with clear perspective. I received a Graf von Faber Castell Intuition pen Terracotta color for a 40th anniversary, while on trip in Paris. With the tax refund and a store discount, I end up paying less than $300. I find it a beautiful pen, very well made, superbly balanced (I don't usually post). I defer to you in experience with "smooth/rough/dry/wet" categories, but I find this pen wonderfully smooth. If this nib isn't smooth, I'm curious to find in my own experience what would be smoother! Writes instantly, even left alone for days. I find it is a pen what is rewarding to hold and I admire the technical workmanship. Thanks for your videos!
Well, a pen can also be very because of its looks.
I don't.
I'm presuming this will be not $200 - $300 like Fountain Pens of the World, and Parker 51. Gee they are not cheap!
Yeah, those are hugely specialized :-)
I AM FROM INDIA I LOVE FOUNTAIN PENS AND I SAW YOUR EVERY VEDIO
Hey Stephen, do you think you might be able to get your hands on a Graf Von Faber Castell classic and do a review of it?(f.e. wood)? My eyes fell on this pen lately but i can't find any decent review of this pen.. Grtz
+Julius Caesar I tried a number of inks, all with the same results.
Nice pen
It is!
I'm surprised to hear you say that the 18k nib has a lot of feedback especially in light of your praise for FC's steel nibs. Could this be an anomaly?
That's always a risk.
nope! have the same problem, and the exact same initial thought: "oh great, i HAD to get the ONE pen with weird issues". I don't mind the singing, really, and it's still basically one of the smoothest writing experiences, but I also have a much less expensive FC pen with the smoothest nib EVER, and the contrast between the two is what really threw me off. In fact, i took it back to the shop and had the nibmiester there take a look at it, cuz i was convinced there was something wrong, since I had not expected the singing. Wish i'd seen this review at the time, there are VERY few reviews of the GvFC Classic line online, and far as I can tell they all mention the same thing: very wet and smooth nib, but with a bit of singing.
Thank you for a Graf von Faber Castell review. The nib performance was a surprise to me and has certainly tempered my desire to buy one quickly - I need to go and try one I think.
Yes, this is one to try out first, I think.
Odd that this pen appears to have a less than great nib. Especially considering that the lower-priced models in the line have such nice steel ones (I really enjoy the medium nib on my E-Motion). I absolutely love the design of the Graf and expect to add one to my collection, but if this nib is indicative of those in the Graf line I may reconsider, especially at the price. Thanks, Stephen.
Another great review, thanks. If you dont like the looks you should see the wood barreled pens in this range. I have a beautiful one in ebony wood. The pernambuco is even more beautiful. Though I too have had the less than satisfactory experience with the nib. In fact I returned the one I bought originally since the first one had problems with the feed keeping up with the nib. I have had no problems with the cheaper FC pens of which I have quite a few.
Yes, those wood pens look quite nice!
Thanks for good review Stephen. Nib, style and detail of pen all seem to be a bit harsh for me, but each to their own taste!
By the by... Peter Twydle's book is an absolute pleasure to read, and super informative. Thanks for the recommendation!
Have a good weekend.
I'm glad you like the book. For a nice coffee table book, check out The Ultimate Book of Pens.
What a nice and interesting review!!! What about a shoot out between Graf von Faber Castell and the "normal" Faber-Castell pens??? What about a review of Graf Faber Castell Classic or Guilloche??? I am looking forward to see a review on them!!!
Such a Shootout would be nice!
Indeed! ;-)
Don't forget to post a link to Azizah's review.
I bought a GVFC Intuition Terra. Cool looking pen. I thought if they could do such a good job with steel nibs their gold ones must be superb. I felt that it underperformed compared to the Faber Castell pens I own, especially when you compare the huge price difference. I was very disappointed and sold it.
Indeed, I agree!
Thanks for the review. For me It's the best looking pen because I like the ultra-modern meterials and looking. I'm seriously considering to buy this pen with my little budget.(I can't test them since they don't sell in stores of my country) Would you please test this pen while tilting so that nib makes about 30 degree to paper and tell me does it perform scratchy or not. Thanks a lot again
Will check it out, thanks.
Having a whine,,,,, I'm just disappointed with my CDA leman. I love CdA and will always! But that said, when you buy top (ish) end pen for 550 US dollars, the nib should work perfectly!
This certainly is not a pen that I would take to work everyday, but every now and then on happy Friday, it would be treat. But thus far it sits in my bureau drawer at home.
Have you had this experience Mr Brown?
I have had that experience, mainly with modern Montblanc pens!
sbrebrown What is your overall opinion of Montblanc fountain pens,Stephen?
Mark Grago They are nice pens, but overpriced in my mind.
BTW love your handwriting.
Strange you found the nib had noticeable feedback. My Graf von Faber Castell Classic quite possibly has the least feedback of any of my pens including the hot melted butter smooth Waterman Carene and polished Pelikan m640. My Nakayas, Sailors and even Mont Blanc Jules Verne all have more feedback.
Maybe I got a bad one, or you got a good one.
A little tuning on yours will do wonders. Mine was super smooth out of the box and maintained its smoothness when reground to an italic.
I think the your nib maybe defect? My GvFC Intuition ef nib isn't feedbacky at all. They use same 18k gold nib. But even though it's extra fine, it writes buttery smooth without much of a sound.
He apparently just had a lemon.
Contact GvFC, their customer service seems to be quite good from what I heard.
Stephen u should review the Stipula Speed fountain pen it's at a very reasonable price it's $89 in Pen Chalet.
I'll see what I can do.
I have the same in rhodium plated, it is pretty! Awesome.
Ich liebe Grad von Faber Castell
I'm new to fountain pens... but love them. Would it be possible to do a Video on the different filler Systems? Like what's a Piston filler, what's a converter etc...???
S. S I'm pretty sure I've done that. see my website for an index to all my videos
Very nice review, Stephen, as always. The MB Oyster Grey ink seems to go well with the pen's color! I like that ink also.
By the way - are there many who care with how a fountain pen writes upside down except on certain specialty nibs designed for this?
Yes, I got a few requests for upside down writing samples :-).
Good uses!
Great review as usual. Thanks for your efforts. What about a shoot out between this pen and the Faber Castell E Motion?
That's possible!
I'm really liking the new camera, what kind is it?
Stephen, the review notwithstanding, I have never seen you rush through your remarks like this before. Where’s the fire?
Hi,
which nib do you suggest for the beginner? F or M?
Stephen can u do a video on your swiss army pocket knife.
HI Stephen,
I have a noodler's konrad acrylic . recently i heard that acrylic acetate decomposes in a few decades . do you think it will last an entire life time if left in my drawer unused ?
I think it should last for a while, but I would store it uninked. That is best for all pens, regardless of material.
Stephen which one of the two u think is better
The Pilot Metropolitan or
The Pilot 78G?
Metropolitan. Heavier and sturdier.
Hello, would you ever be tempted by the GVFC pen of the year series?
Probably not.
Interesting. How does this 18k nib compare to steel nibs on your not-Grafvon Faber-Castells? Would it be that steel ones are smoother and more pleasant to write with?
sbrebrown
Considering price tags on Grafs, that's a little crazy.
I agree.
It probably can be improved, but since this is someone else's pen, I won't be the one doing it.
Well, everything could be improved, but I stand by the opinion that you shouldn't have to do this with pen of that price. 500 pounds on cultpens, as I checked.
Gadzinisko I agree!
Finally!!!! Thanks!!!
Hmm interesting
I LOVE WATER MAN PLEASE REVUE WATER MAN HARLEY DAVIDSON
