I am happy to read you like yours. I read many a rave about the Loom. The price was right for me. I bought one. Don't like it much. Boring nib (mine is a broad, which does offer some joy) and quite uncomfortable in the hand. Still, I enjoy having it always inked up with Akkerman SBRE Brown ink, which is the perfect match for my pen's color. I wouldn't enjoy it even as much as I do, though, had I paid $240 for it! (P.S. That is also the price in US dollars. Eek!)

I have the Faber Castell Ambition, which is the same body design but for $100 rather than $240. It has a different cap and nib, but it is an amazing pen, and worth checking out in my opinion if the $240 price tag is a deal breaker for someone. Great video!

Thanks DB for the great review. I always appreciate your engineering read on fountain pens. I have three GvFC Tamitio fountain pens: Stone Grey , India Red and black (like the one you are reviewing). I have kept at least two inked and on my desk in a pen stand since first writing with one. I haven’t had a problem with drying out with daily use… but if I’m out of town for a week one may be slow to start of will require dipping in some water to get it going. This is when they are in the pen stand, nib up (drying usually happens with the one with the cartridge instead of a converter). I haven’t noticed drying problems with them stored on their side.

I have had Faber-Castell pens in the past, but never a Graf Faber-Castell. There is a difference I am sure in the quality of the pen. Considering it is hand made, as well as the fit and finish, I will be looking for this one. It is a bit thin but considering the size of your hands and how you enjoyed using it, it is certainly worthy of consideration.
    Great review.

I thought there were only three or four "stationary stores" left in the GTA (Toronto) and all of them a prohibitive PITA to drive to, which is significant when shipping ink by Canada Post in winter. Never heard of Blesket until this video, but what a coincidence -- it is less than 5 km from where I work!! Faber-Castell make very nice steel nibs, so I'm not surprised this one was so good. One of our club members who is/was a professional calligrapher bought the calligraphy set version of the Tamitio (which comes with three wide nibs -- 1.1 mm, 1.4 mm, 1.8 mm ) and he liked it so I figured it wrote well. I noticed that Blesket sells the calligraphy kit on their site. Great video. Didn’t realise that GVFC made stainless Steel nibs. I have 3 FC pens with stainless steel nibs all excellent. GVFC gold nib pens are I think expensive. Seeing your video I may look at one of these if and when I’m back in the market for a new high end pen. I do prefer a gold nib but am mindful of an earlier DB video where gold can be disproportionately pricey and where the gold element is roughly 53% of the metal content of the nib. Thank you for a great video. D

Ahhh, another nice one, Doodlebud! And you just made me remember the Hexo as well that I wanted to look into! Well they will have to wait for a little while longer. I just bought the newest Peter Draws pen that he did in collaboration with Goldspot Pens. They did a 1,000 pen run again. This time 100 black with gold fill in the carving of Peter’s doodles that are in the entire pen body. And they did 900 of the black with silver color fill in the carving. I pulled the trigger the minute I saw the Goldspot Short here on YT for it a few hours ago. I’m glad I did. The gold filled were gone I think the first or second day. Idk how many of the silver filled they have left. I also splurged on the Peter Pen Rickshaw Bagworks Peter Pen Artist Edition coozy case and 3 pen coozy as well that are the same black and white doodle Peter did for the design on the box. So I’m looking forward to all that.
But I digress. I have to keep this pen on a list along with the Hexo and others. Because if I don’t they may get pushed to the back of my mind again. Weew. 😆 That’s my brain on pens!
Thanks, as always, for the clear and honest review. Cheers

  • @jaystone4816
    @jaystone4816 Год назад +2

Nice review. When anyone holds a Graf von Faber-Castell pen, they realize they're holding a quality pen, and that includes how it writes. Initially I too was concerned about most Graf pens being on the narrower side, but with their weight and balance - and that great nib - I have no trouble at all. It''s not a "precious resin" (i.e., plastic) pen, so it doesn't have to be gripped like one. Hopefully you'll treat yourself to a Graf with a gold nib at some point in time...and you will love it...their gold nibs are superb.
The German word "Graf"is the equivalent of the English aristocratic title, "Count." And yes, there is a current living Graf von Faber-Castell who heads the company. So it's his name and his family history that's on the line with every pen they produce. It's not like many other pen companies that are owned by large conglomerates. Pelikan, for example, has been owned by a Malaysian financial conglomerate since 1978. That's not to diminish Pelikan' in any way, and I happily own a number of Pelikan pens. But with Graf von Faber-Castell we're really talking about a higher level of quality pen construction and manufacturing, including the in-house production of all their nibs.
Their much more moderately priced standard line, Faber-Castell, also makes a number of pens that are attractive, well-made, and with probably the best steel nibs being made today. I own five or six of them and they are all without exception wonderful writers. If you want to discover how well a quality steel nib can write, treat yourself to a Faber-Castell or a Graf von Faber-Castell Tamitio.

@@Doodlebud I want this as opposed to a regular VP because it's just a little bit different and that's what I liked about it! The writing feeling is pretty spot on to a VP, but the pen itself is a hair thinner than the VP it might be more along the lines of the decimo. It's not as girthy as the VP. But it is a touch longer when the nib is out than the VP or Decimo.

I haven't tried to swap them but the grip feed/nib looks pretty close to a kaweco sport's... Just unlike kaweco as a whole every Grip I've bought wrote amazing on arrival. I'm lucky if kaweco would write at all
Either way they do nib work to every nib because I prefer the Grip almost to the Safari. I find the Grip way more comfortable... Sadly just not as durable. Either way I love FC/GvFC! I just wish they made pens long enough for grown up hands to use unposted.

Pens where the body is more costly than the nib are just backwards and in my opinion one of the worst trends in the industry these past few years. See brands like Ystudio, Keras Kustoms, Tactile Turn, Stilform and others that have been popping up with high precision milled bodies and $5 Chinese nibs, costing more than a Sailor Pro Gear for instance.

This looks to me like an expensive F-C Ambition.with different branding. I have, and like very much the Ambition. Bigger? If so, okay.

But I'd be surprised if it wrote over $200 better than the Hongdian 1843 Navigator, which has a perfectly fine clip. The Hongdian is, of course, rather smaller.

the body design is virtually identical to the Faber Castell Ambition...disappointed to see that GVFC isnt doing much on the design front for the body

Not for $240, not for $220 not even for $200, not a fan of how that section is setup, fingerprint magnet. I'll take the Esterbrook Estie Petrified Forest for $170. This one doesn't appeal to me in the least.. Hard pass.

Of all the "premium" pen brands FC is most disappointing so far due to their awkward designs, subpar quality (pens feel cheaply made), and unjustifiably high price for what you get 🙁

The design isnt for everyone, but I've never heard anyone complain that the pens are poor quality or feel cheap. The build quality on their pens is top notch
