I was on that cruise. I thought Royal Caribbean did a great job of trying to stop the spread. I didn't get sick nor did my wife and would definitely cruise with them again.
Happened to find this video while searching RUclips. I’m actually on this ship right now. I can say that RC has been very accommodating due to this unusual situation however they did have a significant issue dealing with infected individuals. As a person who works in emergency services I have empathy for the crew as they were dealing with things as best as possible. Nothing ever goes perfectly but I hope they review their crisis management policy in order to fix some things. This was my first RC cruise. It has not deterred me from wanting to cruise with them again.
I was on this ship I got it at 3:30am on Thursday, they made a list of people who got it and we were the last to leave off the ship, there was approximately 477 people that reported having the virus, they did the best to accommodate to the ones who were sick by giving us free medication and full refunds on the cruise and excursions, including hotels for those who couldn’t get flights changed. Was very unfortunate to have spent this cruise with only being able to visit labadee but still made great memories
I’m currently on the ship. RC staff have been very thorough about cleaning constantly, and making sure everyone was using hand sanitizer in all public areas. They even went as far to have staff serve food (wearing gloves) in their free restaurants like the windjammer and all cafes up until Thursday. None of us guests were allowed to serve ourselves. I was personally appreciative of this. It seemed like RC was going above and beyond to prevent another outbreak. We love RC and can’t wait to cruise with them again!
If everyone on board washed there hands, used the sani stations, didnt touch the food with their hands at the buffet, and stayed in when they started feeling bad, the virus wouldnt spread like it does on the ship.
Marsha Bryant we done quite a bit of cruising and was appalled on our last cruise how people just walked past the sanitation stations going to the buffet and also dining rooms! That’s the first thing we learned on our first cruise.
I was on this ship when this happened and the crew really did the best they could in preventing the chaos, I would definitely love to cruise on this ship again, great job capt. Rob hempstead.
AntiBACTERIAL soaps don't help against a virus like norovirus. They are effective against BACTERIA. Regular soap and water for handwashing is perfectly fine. (I am a microbiologist, and this is a PSA, don't hate on me!)
When I worked on cruise ships, an inspector from the CDC told me one of the greatest reasons for these viruses spreading was people's belief that hand sanitizers kept them safe and didn't need to wash with hot water and soap.
I don't hate on you. Norovirus can kill people who have weakened immune systems. I got NV the first time I cruised, I'll never cruise an ocean cruise again. The ship I was on tried to pass it off as seasickness.
It is pretty disgusting how many grown adults don't know how to wash hands. I'm surprised there aren't more outbreaks in major cities from the lack of hygiene I see first hand.
My husband and I just got back today from cruising Norwegian Escape. After about 40 people getting sick with the virus, crew insisted that everyone washy washy and sanitize like crazy! At the buffet we we're no longer able to serve ourselves.
Going on Liberty of the Seas in February. I'm fully aware of the possible hazards of cruising but the benefits far outweigh the occasional setbacks. I urge people to take a chance at cruising if you haven't. And the RC boats are just enormous and amazing. I'm sold.
@@CruiseRadioThe whole thing is a completely enjoyable experience. There's 5 couples going this time. Food, drink, swimming, laughing, entertainment and great weather. Getting out of the cold is the most fun. It's happy time all around. Everybody is happy and enjoying themselves and their families and friends. And, you meet new happy people. I like happy!!! Again, the RC boats are just awesome in design and amenities too. I would cruise 3 times a year if I could.

Late to the catch up on earlier edition's of Cruise radio with Doug Parker. I found this edition on Nora Virus easy to consume brain waves. Many more thanks and see ya in the next edition of your blog.
Thank you for the kind words. That's very sweet. The site and my weekly podcast are my babies. My RUclips is a passion project. That was such a simpler time, huh?! Appreciate you watching.
I got bitched at by the safety man at work for not holding the handrail while going down the stairs. I then asked him if he had recently had them disinfected cause it’s flu season and I see everyone sneezing in their hand then grabbing the rail. He said oh, you got a good point there. 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️
Great video as always... I always wash my hands, and I preach it. Somehow I’m home with a flu bug with no respiratory or stomach symptoms. Just fever, aches and pains. Speedy recover to all aboard.
It's true about schools. My son and about half of his elementary school came down with norovirus the Friday before Columbus Day in 2008. I got a robocall from the school district that afternoon that the county health department was planning to undertake a deep cleaning over the weekend. The following Tuesday, about 10% of students were out sick.
Yeah, it sucks. I got it at a restaurant at the resort and it was miserable for 48 hours. Also got it on a ship, that was the worst because I couldn't leave my room.
The next time I go on a cruise, I'll bring plenty of disinfectants and load up on anti viral substances. I'll probably also avoid the buffet. I DON'T want to spend a voyage in the cabin bathroom.
My family was on that ship. Every time you went into a restaurant or another room the crew members made you use the hand sanitizer. They wouldn’t let you touch the glasses in the resturants or let you get your own food from windjammers. Although we still had a great time. There was plenty to do on the boat so we didn’t complain about not getting off. I would very much recommend Oasis Of The Seas
Glad you have such a positive outlook on the situation. I hope you and your family came out healthy and ready for your next cruise! Thanks so much for watching.
The cruise industry can put as much lipstick on these outbreaks as they want, they all are directly attributal to two fators: 1. Crew hygiene. 2. Food safety. Passengers do not bring these viruses on board (perhaps .01% might). Cruise owners need to spend more money on vessel housecleaning, crew training and enforcement of personal hygiene, restroom mandatory rules for crew. Food safety is aparamount no matter what we are told. So far the food industry has gotten away with no fatalities, but that will not be the case forever.
This is why the antibacterial gel is right before you enter the food courts or any dining areas. Some are even placed before you would pick up a plate or your silverware with your napkin. I have started to pay attention to guests on board a ship and unless they are MADE to use it, I can't even begin to tell the ratio of who does and who doesn't. But both my cruises last year I told my husband lets see what happens. People before my husband, and after me using the gel did not get a clue to use it. So with that said, while I respect Royal Caribbean' giving refunds to everyone and they lost a lot of money, I do believe people should be held accountable for what they are NOT doing before eating. We went on a Holland Cruise and they did not let you touch anything for 2 days in the buffet. Some ships have someone stationed at the buffet and others just the machine. Regardless we should respect each other and use the gel.
joseph keeney smart or not, there are a lot of people who just don’t wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Pigs can be very smart but they are still pigs.

I read something about a parent bringing her child to a cruise ship and the child has caught the norovirus. I'm not sure if this the ship the OP is talking about so I just shared it with you guys
Great video. Also, people (and especially kids) should be told to not try to fill their water bottles or add juice to their personal bottles by pressing them up against the fountains. I see people do that on many ships.
It happens, especially on ships. I'm going on the Harmony at Easter. I use the sanitizers, keep clean. I'm trusting in the employees to keep up the hard work of cleaning all the handrails which they do, constantly
Just got out of freedom the first day on my cabin i saw on my toilet seat a brownish yellowish ring around the seat obviously they didnt clean well the place aghhh
I was on Anthem of the Seas last year and the food was gross. I got sick, the drink package was a waste because drinks were made terribly and it was WAY TO CROWDED! Thank god I didn't pay for this shit since it was a gift from my father in law. But cruising is the worst.
I went on this cruise a couple weeks after this incident and nothing bad happened. They had employees at every entrance where food or drinks were present with hand sanitizer and although they didn't make you use it they will pretty much place it in front of you asking you to wash up. Plus they would restrict the flow of people walking in to form a single file and get your sanitizer so again you didn't want to say no because then everyone else looks at you like "gross" lol. Anyways its a great ship and great company.
I just got off of the Disney Fantasy cruise ship earlier today, I saw the ship in port Canaveral today, and I also was docked next to them in Falmouth Jamaica, I didn’t know it was happening until I got off the Disney Fantasy today, I was very confused about why they weren’t allowed off the ship in Falmouth. Apparently Disney Cruise Line threatened to pull the Disney Fantasy away from Falmouth (some how to Royal Carribeans expense) if they were allowed off the ship which also encouraged the port authority to not allow the gam way to be placed.
Random Stuff Dronkey16 I remember that in Port Canaveral one of the carnival ships was the Breeze, but I can’t remember the second one. But in Falmouth it was just the Fantasy and the Oasis
A full refund for the cruise is one thing , but what about hotel accommodations for returning early for the passengers to await the departures on their return flights? I would hope they would cover that as well.
Hi Pedro. Thanks for watching the video. Royal Caribbean is providing each guest with a hotel credit of $200 per stateroom. Also for air changes, $200 for domestic changes and $400 for international changes. I hope this clarifies. - doug
I don't blame the crew or cruise line. They are the for at least six months so if it was the crew, there would be a outbreak every week. I blame kids that are run around unsupervised by parents.
@ Cheri-Awesome Sunsets Travel Take a box of adult diapers for you with some Valentines on them so you both will feel so romantic changing each other's flu shitty diapers darling ;-) burp!
Cruise Radio it is a concern about future bookings but it appears that overall the incidence of norovirus have been very rare and will not keep me off the ship. People wash your hands!
There was one where a karen who knew her kid was sick and caused a outbreak and when many people telling them to stay in there can but still went out and infected more and more people
We were on the same ship/cruise a month ago. Ship is filthy - period. Also, when you buy the unlimited soft drink package, they issue you a plastic, chip-embedded travel mug, which you use the whole week (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks). There should've been some sort of dish washing system provided for basic public health & sanitation - but there was not. I took Lysol wipes and cleaned the room & bathroom surfaces.....filthy....in the military we studied basic public health and prevention to keep our people healthy....this ship is far from healthy
Not sure which branch you were in but I served 12 years in the Army. In the field, we had no where to wash our canteens, canteen cups or mess kits. We ate with dirty hands and had a lot of bugs to add to our protein supply. We sailed on the Oasis a few years ago and had the opposite opinion as to the cleanliness you have (granted, things may have changed) and the same plastic, chip embedded cups which we washed in our cabins. Never got sick. The Norovirus in this situation is most likely, as discussed in the video, brought onboard by another passenger. Too many times I heard about passengers sailing knowing they were ill. Been on 13 sick-free cruises.
I spent 15 years working on cruise ships and the only reason for the spread of these viruses was the lack of hygiene from the passengers. Whenever there was an outbreak we'd post crew in the public restrooms to ensure pax washed their hands and on every cruise, a vast number refused outright. Always 50+ American men.
I would have been okay with this but the fact that contaminated food/water wasn’t mentioned irritates the hell out of me! Being dramatic that it’s spread from “dirty” people is insulting! The covid pandemic helped to put a spotlight on that! Give people ALL the Info!
They could have caught it in Haiti , they serve lunch for you and someone preparing the food (contract worker) may not have washed their hands or were sick. I’m glad Royal refunded their money. I just got off the Allure of the Seas in Oct and it was great. Stopped at Haiti also so that food comment above could have been the cause.
How about someone on board was nasty and didn't wash their hands after using the bathroom or wiping their nose and didn't wash their hands. Don't blame Haiti.
The note passed to the guests said if you were a back to back cruise they would reach out to your stateroom. I'd assume a hotel with the other guests. Thanks for watching the video.

They actually don’t clean the rooms well. I arrived to my room last November to see food stains and food crumbs in the room. Te toilets were dirty also🤮. I complained and they “cleaned” the room. I got a rash even though they had cleaned already, and I don’t even have sensitive skin. When our trip was over and we evacuated the ship... we saw a line of people that were ready to board the ship. The ship was planning on doing another round which made me think 🤔 how do they manage to have time to clean the ship when there’s so many rooms
I AGREE WITH YOU ,yes but.... The RISON,,,,, when we start cruising all the time ,was 2 stuard in the cabin for 10 or 15 cabin Now ,it is only one and he has the same number of cabin or more People they a bust them to ,ask them CHANE a bed shit evry day ,are you kidding me At home if you change one a week I will send you 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 But if not you OK, every 2 weeks it is ok to But ,people like ABUST them evening to BECUSE they do not know how to open the bed at EVENING Hello ?????? IMO. All ships should have a full cleaning day in between trips. After every disembarkation, the next 24 hours should only be devoted to a thorough sanitation process before the next set of passengers get on board.
At this point i'm still very shocked with negative result I got after suffering from Norovirus for so long. Thanks once again Dr.Osaoji on youtube for your medication
I was the second person to get norovirus on a family reunion vacation. It spread to almost everyone-like 30 people. Most contagious thing I’ve ever seen.
Norovirus can stay intact on surfaces for a very very long time without degrading unlike other enveloped viruses. Best to stay far away from anyone that has this virus even if they are family.
So how can we be sure that it wasn't RCI fault? Yes it can be cause by people having poor hygiene after use of the bathrooms. But also can be caused by cleanness of the kitchen and food storage. With so many people getting sick quickly it could be that they all ate at a restaurant that was not cleaned properly or even cleaned too well. Sometimes the chemicals used to clean things such as lettuce are not properly rinsed off. If you only present one side of things that is not the whole truth.
I was not picking on them I just have noticed that a majority last year and year before have been the royal caribbean ships also it is proven on the CDC website..@@CruiseRadio

Plus they would restrict the flow of people walking in to form a single file and get your sanitizer so again you didn't want to say no because then everyone else looks at you like "gross" lol. Anyways its a great ship and great company.
Def an isolated incident. Thanks for watching.
hand sanitizer for Noro?!! this one responds better to soap and water
Wait that was the fantasy nice i wondered what that Disney ship it was also what were the 2 carnival ship names that were docked
Random Stuff Dronkey16 I remember that in Port Canaveral one of the carnival ships was the Breeze, but I can’t remember the second one. But in Falmouth it was just the Fantasy and the Oasis
Yes I saw it cause I was on the ship I wished I had taken Disney... Lucky duck!
O_O I've been on that ship + the same port, and the same places luckily at a different time (april 1st - april 8)
Definitely lucky! I hope the cruise you did go on was a blast. Thanks for watching.
Norovirus spreads like wildfire in Hospitals too
Thank you for watching.
1 year later:
Coronavirus ends ALL cruise ships
Fair point.
*r/entitled parents*
thanks for watching!
I was on this ship 7 of us and 3 of us got sick inclduing myslef
The NEWS in the UK reported this as 'Harmony of the Seas' Which ship was it??????
Oasis of the Seas from Port Canaveral.
Cheers…...@@CruiseRadio
A full refund for the cruise is one thing , but what about hotel accommodations for returning early for the passengers to await the departures on their return flights?
I would hope they would cover that as well.
Hi Pedro. Thanks for watching the video. Royal Caribbean is providing each guest with a hotel credit of $200 per stateroom. Also for air changes, $200 for domestic changes and $400 for international changes. I hope this clarifies. - doug
@@CruiseRadio Thank you for your further clarification. Great video.
@@pedrocaballero1497 You bet. Thank you.
Yeah they did. If you needed a hotel stay or a flight rebooked to the day before then they would pay for it. Not much hassle
I don't blame the crew or cruise line. They are the for at least six months so if it was the crew, there would be a outbreak every week. I blame kids that are run around unsupervised by parents.
Thank god I was on that ship in 2018.. I've been hearing stuff like this on a ton of ships and now I'm paranoid to go on any ship.
We were just on the next cruise after this one luckily not very many people got sick though
We are Sailing on the Oasis in a Month... hoping nothing like this happens again 😢
These are isolated incidents. You should have no problems at all. Thank you for watching.
@ Cheri-Awesome Sunsets Travel Take a box of adult diapers for you with some Valentines on them so you both will feel so romantic changing each other's flu shitty diapers darling ;-) burp!
Nothing more than a giant floating petri dish.
Isn’t it fascinating that the Agar in the Petri dish comes from red algae? I really should’ve paid more attention in biology. Thanks for watching.
Cruise Radio it is a concern about future bookings but it appears that overall the incidence of norovirus have been very rare and will not keep me off the ship. People wash your hands!
That's a great point. Isolated incidents that get blown up.
There was one where a karen who knew her kid was sick and caused a outbreak and when many people telling them to stay in there can but still went out and infected more and more people
make sure to pack the pink stuff
"Everyone was sick". Kind of an exaggeration, imo.
Disagree but respect your opinion. Thank you for watching the video, my friend. - doug
voyage of dispair
I think someone drank too much Mexican water ;-)
Thanks for watching.
I was on that boat then lol
Went on Royal Caribbean in Nov 2017. The outbreak of Norovirus was bad
Yikes. Do you normally take the Lysol wipes with you? I started about a year ago and swear by them.
Quit being so damn dramatic, Elizabeth. Good gosh.
Just saw the video from Oz Media on this story from Reddit - this all started because of an entitled parent and their kid
Thanks for watching.
That was a shitty cruise for some people.
It definitely was. Thank you for watching.
Very true. When I got it on a ship a few years ago I think I picked it up when we were at a port in Europe.
How about someone on board was nasty and didn't wash their hands after using the bathroom or wiping their nose and didn't wash their hands. Don't blame Haiti.
Shannon Braddee Knock it off, those cruise ships aren’t as clean as you think has nothing to do with Haiti or Jamaica
Fallon M I know they aren’t that clean. If you read the first 3 words I wrote “They could have”suggested a possibility NOT that it was.
Haiti is a filthy third world country. Of course it could've come from there.
Wonder what they are doing for B2B cruisers? Stay on ship or check into hotel?
The note passed to the guests said if you were a back to back cruise they would reach out to your stateroom. I'd assume a hotel with the other guests. Thanks for watching the video.
Anyones else who was on the cruise and did you like jp fk 3d personally i did but venom was good too
Venom was one of the better movies I saw last year.
I'm cool asf, so people feel comfortable around me. I hate that you're tude if you don't shake hands.
SORRY, I did over 60 and still doing March and April
Newer had that problem
Nothing wrong with food only with people ,I just finish NCL ESCAPE and you can
NOT have idea how dirty PEOPLE on the ship
In open RESTURAND that ,,lot of people,, take the food with HANDS
So DISCASTING ,
I have seen PEOPLE go to BATHROOM and they do not wash the hands
THEY DO NOT know ,how fast BACTERIA going and they do not know how to use the fork or spatula or spoon
Never had problem
1st , Eat in main RESTURAND, avoid those dirty PEOPLE
2nd go on longer CRUSE and you avoid many bad passengers
Most they not afford 14 or 21 days or a month CRUSE
We did last April Hawaii ,28 days so ,you automatically eliminated
Booms,lazy ,dirty PEOPLE
You go and see people dress on 7 day or people dress up on 14 or 21 days
And go on SMOLLER ship
100.000 THUSEND tons not bigger
I did oasis of the seas and Anthem and ALLURE
IT was awesome ,but going back no
We go when the new ship caming
PRICES little more ,but it is worthy
After a year or 2 PRICES going down BECUSE the CRUSE LINE they do not like to have emty cabin
So ,it is your choice
I will do but more Celerity,HCL and Cunard , QM2 ,Q.V.,, WE ,
GO AND TRY AMEZINF
PASSENGERS 2,300 OR LESS
NOT THAT CREZZY
LOVE IT
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😙
I hope this bankrupts Royal Caribbean and all their plague ships end up sold for scrap and torn apart in a ship breaking yard in Bangladesh.
Showing no mercy tonight, are you?
They actually don’t clean the rooms well. I arrived to my room last November to see food stains and food crumbs in the room. Te toilets were dirty also🤮. I complained and they “cleaned” the room. I got a rash even though they had cleaned already, and I don’t even have sensitive skin. When our trip was over and we evacuated the ship... we saw a line of people that were ready to board the ship. The ship was planning on doing another round which made me think 🤔 how do they manage to have time to clean the ship when there’s so many rooms
I AGREE WITH YOU ,yes but....
The RISON,,,,, when we start cruising all the time ,was 2 stuard in the cabin for 10 or 15 cabin
Now ,it is only one and he has the same number of cabin or more
People they a bust them to ,ask them CHANE a bed shit evry day ,are you kidding me
At home if you change one a week I will send you 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
But if not you OK, every 2 weeks it is ok to
But ,people like ABUST them evening to BECUSE they do not know how to open the bed at EVENING
Hello ?????? ARE they KIDDING ME
My guy ,I see him first day give him a tip and ask him do my bed after 4 or 5 days and if I have dirty towels I will ask him at evening
THEY LIKE, to be pamper to
We BOTH HAPPY 🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺🌺
IKR it’s kinda gross because you need to close your toilet lid all of the time because the boat will move and the water will go everywhere :/ so gross
IMO. All ships should have a full cleaning day in between trips. After every disembarkation, the next 24 hours should only be devoted to a thorough sanitation process before the next set of passengers get on board.
I was on the ship it was crazy I
Called it the plague ship so happy to be off and not sick!!!
Oh no, I'm sure it was crazy! Glad to hear you are okay. Thanks for watching.
Hey I live in Jacksonville 😁
Amelia Island Plantation is where I got noro.
That not good
it always is royal caribbean!! I've noticed!!
In all fairness it happens on all of them. You create massive ships, you get massive publicity when something goes wrong. You know?
I was not picking on them I just have noticed that a majority last year and year before have been the royal caribbean ships also it is proven on the CDC website..@@CruiseRadio
www.cdc.gov/nceh/vsp/surv/gilist.htm#2018
@@CruiseRadio wait look at the list i take that back it seems last year was a multitude of different vessels..
prove it..@Iraq Lobsta!! 45
