- In early February 2020, the Diamond Princess cruise ship was quarantined off the coast of Yokohama, Japan. Hundreds of passengers tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus and fourteen people died. As Chinese authorities were just beginning to deal with the outbreak of the disease in Wuhan, the Diamond Princess became the largest site of infection outside China. The viral outbreak tore through the ship as authorities desperately scrambled to curb the spread of the infection by confining over 2,500 passengers to their rooms. Within two weeks, passengers and crew members were pleading with their governments to be taken off the ship. This is the story of how a luxury cruise liner turned into a floating epidemiological disaster- taking an in-depth look at how the authorities responded to an unprecedented situation when there were still so many unknowns.

We have cruised since in May 2023 and April 2024, and on both cruise ships, there have been outbreaks of covid. May 23 Alaska cruise, over 200 of 6,000 passengers reported on FB group (not every passenger was on FB), and they contracted covid, including me. April 24, a 17 day cruise with bad weather the last 5 days requiring guests to be inside, several hundred of 2,200 passengers got sick with respiratory virus, not all positive for covid but other respiratory viruses were included some requiring hospitalization. Cruise ships are not designed for adequate ventilation to prevent the spread of any viruses.
I remember watching this before my virtual high school graduation in 2020.

I immediately thought “no windows?” Those poor people! I find cruising rather boring myself and being locked in would be awful.
No windows and no natural light equals severe depression. They have to quarantine can’t get out for weeks. I wouldn’t want to be in that situation.

Because for some weird reason lately RUclips has been recommending 10 year old videos and no one knows why. Some videos had maybe 1k or 2k views that were posted in 2009 or 2010 and suddenly that video that was never popular pops up everywhere as recommended and the video suddenly gets a million views within a week and everyone is trying to figure out why RUclips is recommending these 10 year old unpopular videos, it's like they're making money or something out of these old videos.
Is anyone else still sitting here thinking how these past 7 months possibly can't be real life?!?! So surreal to me still.

This is my life every year, I've been isolated for years because I'm chronically ill
I think that we all have felt bad for all the people stuck on the ship after their trip was supposed to end but we forget about the crew. What they did for all those people. They were forgotten about. And they risked their safety to take care of those people on board.
Amen to that. They were treated horribly. So sad.
Kudos to my uncle. He is one of the crew members in that said cruise ship. They were locked up in the ship for almost a month and he possibly got infected by one of his crewmates cuz he was one of the last people to got out of the cruise ship. He has no choice tho because they were told that they might get fired if they stop working and go into isolation.
We were so worried rlly. After he finally reached our homeland he was even been quarantined again for another 3 weeks and found out he has covid. He got isolated on his family for 2 months, and thankfully he beat covid. He's now currently taking a break as a seaman.
I'm proud for my uncle. Thanks goodness he didn't suffered very bad from it.
It's just glad to see him alive and well again after the first anniversary of this incident.
The crew did not "infect themselves". They were infected by a passenger who spread it to both crew and fellow passengers.

I remember following some twitter accounts of people who were "released" from quarantined on the cruise, but instead of going home, they decided to try and stay in Japan to travel more. Like, how irresponsible can you be??

COVID19 has been proven (even at the time of disembarkment) to spread via asymptomatic people, or people that only later tested positive after initial negative tests. You can't say they aren't hurting anyone if there is even a small chance that he/she can infect other people unknowingly. That's exactly the mindset of an irresponsible person.

@@latanyakay943 It was here a long time before it was identified! My partner had it in November 2019 in the UK. It was not diagnosed as it was still an unidentified illness. I am in absolutely no doubt that what my partner suffered from was Covid.

I suppose what else could the company do though the government in Japan wouldn't let them let people off they had no choice but to quarantine passengers to their cabins somebody had to deliver food and other stuff to the passengers they couldn't let them starve but they could have looked at medical Histories of the staff and let those quarantine that were at high risk and pay them danger money

There might be some parallels to Singapore's circuit-breaker measures & lockdown of migrant workers' dormitories which were soon followed by mass infections within the dormitories

Cruise lines treats a lot of their workers like crap before covid so it seems on brand. Makes me so sad.
My friend was on this ship for over a month until she finally got evacuated to California where they were then quarantined again. When she tried to fly back to China (where we live) she was informed she was on a do not fly list. When she was finally allowed to fly China had banned foreigners so she has been literally trapped away from home for 6 months as a result of being on this cruise.
But hey. She survived. She'll have a story to tell.

Them saying “we’re not ready to go home!” and then having to stay on board because of the COVID outbreak reminds me of how me and my friends were like “omg I hate school I hate this place I’d do anything to get out of here” school closed due to there being COVID cases around our area and uh yeah we never went back and regretted ever saying it. Be careful what you wish for.

In February, I was buying athletic shoes here in Texas, and struck up a conversation with another shoe-shopper. She (65+yo) was buying shoes for her upcoming cruise.
At that time, quarantines and masks weren't on our minds. This lady *did* mention that her cruise was still green-lighted to set sail. I stated that I'm not sure that I'd go. I hope she is faring well, wherever she is.
It really isn't our business. At least they aren't staying locked in a house. They want to enjoy life. How do we know that they only have a year yo live due to some dreadful diagnosis.

My grandparents were on this ship during this. My grandma had been diagnosed with heart cancer but did not tell us before going because she didn't want us to tell her she couldn't. When on the ship my grandma started to get sick. They were scared it was because of covid so they evacuated her off the ship with nearly nothing but her phone. My grandpa had to stay on the ship which meant that my grandma, with heart cancer, doesn't know Japanese, and had barely anything was all alone. We shortly lost connection to my grandma because her phone had died and she didn't know how to ask help from the doctors because none of them spoke english. My grandpa and my family were very scared because we had know that before they left my grandma was having health complications and didn't know what they were doing to her. A few days into them being stuck my dad got a call from my uncle who is a doctor. I was sitting right next to him and the time and I could hear my uncle talking. My uncle got connections to my grandmas doctor and found out that she had cancer. That was really terrifying to hear. I was scared that she might die there. We could all tell that my grandpa was getting very depressed because he was stuck in his room all alone. We would call him and my dad would talk to him about basketball just to get his mind off of things. After a while my aunt connected to one of her friends who were in Japan to help my grandma. They were able to talk to the doctors and get her a charger for her phone so we could talk to her. She was doing fine and we then found out that she did not have covid but they had been giving her some types of medicine for her cancer but we had no idea what it was. My grandma said that they would not tell her what they were doing and would give her different shots and fluids. My grandma was doing fine and my grandpa got told that they would have to leave. My grandma was told that she was allowed to go when everyone else was going but the only problem was they didn't know where her passport was. My grandpa had looked everywhere but it was not with him. But the people told him that he had to leave. So he left with out her. My grandpa was taken to the military base and stayed there for a period of two weeks to quarantine. My grandma on the other hand could not leave japan without here passport which was missing. My grandpa found her passport when unpacking at the military base so he sent it to her in Japan so she could come home. The day after her passport was delivered to her she left. She came right back to her house and the next day my grandpa was home as well. My grandparent have many stories about that experience but they don't wish to share because it was a dark time to think about.

This subject still gives me traumatic flashbacks. I had to stop watching the news because my mental health was completely destroyed by everything that was going on. I remember the news about this ship on tv but I never really got deep into what happened. God, it hurts to see how really trapped we all were. All the deaths... All that unveiled. I'm glad to see happy stories from this terrible moment.

It was really criminal that the Ruby Princess was allowed to set sail on March 8. They saw what happened with the Diamond Princess and thought "What the heck, let's sail anyway". And the passengers who chose to embark on the Ruby Princess in March were irresponsible with their own health.

The crew were not allowed to leave even after let the passengers leave. They were still not allowed to leave after two to three months not getting paid, running out of food. Some committed suicide. Much smaller cabins.
Im in a nursing home. Weve been on lockdown for 8 months. We got word yesterday that, by appointment only, we are going to be allowed 15 minute in person, socially distant visits with family.
Not gonna lie. I cried. I am so happy! It feels amazing to think I might be able to talk with my father without a pane of glass between us.

I remember mid March when my grandkids were supposed to be out of school two weeks. They were homeschooled a year and a half.
I myself kept my grand child home schooling until 2023 September. Due to the fact I myself am in my 60s. Haven't had covid or the needles so far. January 2024.❤❤❤😮
I was a sophomore in high school when all this happened, let’s say, it was such a horrible experience for me. Like at first I was so happy we were able to have a 2 week break from school hopefully come back afterwards, but I was wrong…it turned out to be a whole different story. Remote learning was pretty stressful, couldn’t get that much attention we had in regular classes. For someone that’s social and likes to do things, it was mentally exhausting staying home nonstop. I remember how afraid I was not knowing how long all this would last for, how afraid to get COVID-19. Besides all the worries and negative stuff, I had fun with my family, we did cool activities at home even though it was difficult staying home everyday but overall I still had a good time with them. Now 4 years later at 19 almost 20 in April out of high school, survived Covid 3 times throughout the years, still living strong. The Covid pandemic will always be a memory I and all of us won’t forget.
You kept strong and are living during these times for a reason... your story will bring comfort and hope to others who went through the same thing as you and will let other young people know they are not alone. You are all survivors! God bless you🙏

Tobio none of the crew are being treated bad during this unprecedented situation that happened onboard. I know really well since I am one of the crew members onboard when the outbreak happened. We are all lucky and thankful for what Princess had done to us since we disembarked the ship until we reach our home countries.

I would only take a freighter cruise but not till pandemic is over. Freighter cruises are cheap and you get great accommodations excellent food. They require a certificate of health as well. many even have pools and entertainment. They only take about 12 passengers usually, to me that's crowd enough.

It has brought into sharp relief how germs / bacteria / viruses spread. The best and saddest biology experiment ever. I can remember watching the news and seeing this unfold. There was another ship as well where no-one was infected and they had to stay on board too. Condolences to everyone who lost their loved ones

Yes! I didn’t realise this and booked a non-window room (just 3 nights, well before covid) and it was horrible, in the morning it was so hard to wake up properly cause there was no light what so ever, and you had to cover your eyes when you turned on the light!

I was returning from a mini cruise from Amsterdam back to the UK on the 13th February and that's about the time they started to do worldwide coverage of the Diamond Princess. In the morning as we were all waiting to get off, they were playing the breaking news about there being a death on board it and the quarantine of their cruise liner. There were about 250 people in this waiting area with the big screen projector playing this and we were all silent and scared. Little did we all know that would be the last part of normality we would see for a long time.
The cruise liner and the captain did their best considering this was a new virus and no one knew how to deal with it, god bless you all 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
What is sad is that Princess and other cruise lines kept sailing after this case. They kept sailing and infecting until mid March. Some crew members are still stuck on ships at sea.
When your running a business it's hard to stop. Some of the airline companies went under completely because they have what the news calls a "cash burn".
Well I went on a cruise on February 22-26 with Royal Caribbean but at the time the US and North America only had 1 or 2 cases. What’s even crazier is that I never knew about all of this until around March . But they did ask if we had symptoms of anything or have been to China recently . And they took our temps

Stian Tveit well it wasn’t really wide spread over here in my state and I was also currently at school. So we heard about it but we had no health hazard announced to us yet
Stian Tveit my school wasn’t closed until mid March. Everyday I was going to school with around a thousand other people. We had assemblies of around 400 students in a hall, where we weren’t even a foot a part. No precautions were in place, we were continuing the same way we did for years. In February my school took 40 students to Italy skiing, very close to a large outbreak. They all returned to school the following week, missing 14 days of school would ‘disrupt their learning too much’. Very few people were taking the virus seriously, and being in school was just as dangerous as cruise ships.
"Initially passengers remain in good spirits"...sure, for those with balcony cabins that get 24/7 fresh air and a sense of more space. Passengers with inner rooms are in a box 23 hours a day.
I've never been on a 'cruise ship', and certainly wouldn't bother if I couldn't afford a room with a balcony. I _have_ stayed in a windowless box for a 12 hour trip aboard a ferry, but I can't imagine enduring that for _days_ or _weeks,_ pandemic or not. Sounds more like torture than a "pleasure cruise".

I had a knot in my throat throughout this entire video. Just the thought of so much fear and uncertainty condensed in such a small area, and the number of people affected, whether they contracted the virus or not- it’s gut wrenching.
And to add the fact that most of them were in a foreign country during a pandemic.

I really do hate that the workers had to live in such fear, but honestly, there’s no way they could’ve stopped working. If they had quarantined too, nobody would be able to eat, not even the crew.
Truth... plus it will be selfish for them to ask to leave... this is exactly why the coronavirus had spread. Even after knowing that they've been exposed, people still travel... it takes how many hours to get yohr result, in that span of hours you shouldn't be exposed to other people because you might be carrying a virus but for these people, even without a result, they continued on eating together.

Lost my sister in April of 2022 -- she was a medical professional with a master's degree in public health ---- there is no immunity, still. It is a virus--do you see any innoculated immunity for morphing viruses of colds and flu???
But now no one is dying .
It's funny how when I watch a documentary of an outbreak this big, it's usually a thing in the past and I didn't live through it, hence I could only sympathize and use it only as information. But now, I'm actually living it. This documentary gives me flashback of how intense and scared everyone all over the world was during this diamond princess cruise ship case. It was the first evidence outside China of how infectious the virus is; double that with the general idea of cruise ship being a petri dish of bacteria and viruses. I remember very well how cases started popping up in more countries all over the world, mostly in Asia first, soon after this cruise ship. It's as if this cruise incident finally wakes us up to the horror of the reality that this virus has a high potential to cause a pandemic. I don't just sympathize with it anymore, I can still remember the chills running down my spine during those months, every morning, when I woke up to another dreadful news about the virus.
And those images ,I will never forget them it was like the apocalypse!

I remember one day looking at the worldwide statistics of deaths and how it kept going up, completely breaking down and pained at heart. I’m still sad so many have lost their lives.
I am impressed by the speed you were able to put a documentary together of something that happened so recently.
It was kind of surreal to watch it too. I am living in Japan, and I saw all of this unfold day by day on the news, yet watching it now (not even half a year later) it sounds so far away, with all the infection data we have now and all the countries affected, that I am shocked to stop and think that yes, just five months ago things were like this
And here we all now with millions and millions of deaths worldwide, and our lives changed forever 💔

I remember sitting with my boss and coworker watching this on tv thinking how screwed we all were. I was working at a hospital little did we know how screwed we were. That calm before the storm.
We were on Royal Caribbeans Harmony of the Seas in February watching what was unfolding on the Diamond Princess. How the hell cruise companies kept inviting passengers onto their ships at the end of February and beyond and the fact people still went was just incredible. And people were still desperate to cruise in April and May while cruise companies were giving them hope that it was possible. Crazy

We were stuck in the bahamas when the outbreak occurred and saw many cruise ships sitting off the coast with crew stuck on board because no country would let the ships port in their country. They just anchored off shore or coast very slowly. This went on for many months. It was sad.
To get back to the USA, 6 months later, we had to charter a private airplane from Florida to come get us and take us back to the USA. That was the only way we could get back. All public transportation into the USA was halted.
It is heart breaking to view people's stories during the beginning of Covid-19. We knew it's gonna become an outbreak somehow since it happened in china. But never expected it to still be happening after almost 2 years.

One of the really interesting things with the whole pandemic is how important it is to recognise real danger early. Myself, I’ve been on one cruise and although it was enjoyable I’d never do it again, especially after now knowing the shocking conditions for the crew. And just knowing there is the possibility of being stuck on the ship is enough to put me off.
I still cruise and purposefully tip in amounts enough to make a difference for those serving me.
Me & my family had went on a Carnival Cruise months before the outbreak!! So very thankful that we didn’t have such a experience as these poor people had too😟😢
I work in hazardous waste and when we enter a contamination zone we are completely covered from head to toe and taught how to properly remove our PPE by going through a decontaminated zone so that we don’t get contaminated or bring contamination with us. What the professor from Japan said made so much sense to me.
We would do drills with shaving cream. It is easier to understand how contamination is spread and how important it is to decontaminate. Try getting out of your PPE without getting shaving cream on you is easier said than done.
They really needed to zone areas, but did not have the training. I feel in the case of the diamond princess it was the ventilation system as well as the improper decon of items that caused the spread in aerosol form and it kept re-infecting people. There was a case study done on a family from Wuhan had gone to a restaurant in Southern China and it was the ventilation system that caused people at other tables to get infected. This is so sad. 🙏🏻 prayers to all affected by this.

One of the reasons I will not go on a large company cruise ship is that at the end of the day, they put business ahead of humanity. They did not help their workers and even threatened to send their names to the company's headquarters?!! They were AFRAID and woking tirelessly! Also, I don't understand how that tiny windowless room with 4 people is even legal. I hope God Blesses all those who had to endure on this ship. Shame Shame Shame on Diamond Princess.

I shared a hotel room with my sister that was so small the 2 single beds were almost touching, you couldn't get between them, and even at the end of the beds there was a tiny little space basically just enough for each of us to stand at the end of our beds, then a toilet in what was like a tiny cupboard, we didn't even have a shower or anything cuz it was so insanely tiny.
that's all our mum was willing to pay for for us, her and our stepdad had a good room, but they wanted the cheapest room for us. it was horrible but you get what you pay for, as long as you're made aware of the rooms size/conditions then no it shouldn't be illegal. banning tiny rooms would simply prevent people without much money from going on holiday

Their actually hero’s. Someone had to feed the people stuck on the ship. I’m sure it was a tough choice the cruise liner company had to make. Nobody from any government was going to come on board and do their jobs. They were already on the ship too. I just don’t think they should of had to work 13 hours a day

Until these documentaries aired, many people were still planning on going on their long booked cruises and greedy cruise companies were prepared to take them rather than refund their money.......these documentaries woke a lot of people up and the canceled their cruises......And cruise ships were grounded at last, due to negative publicity and public and health department pressure. I can't believe I have to explain this to you.

I am a crew member that was onboard during this whole period. I must say tha Princess Cruisess took extremely great care of all the guests and crew onboard. The guests were given everything and anything thay wanted for free.
I strongly feel that two people from this video (Suryatapa Bhattacharya and Maggi Morris) do not have a clue about what they are talking and their facts are completely wrong.
Can you please share - what did the guests get for free?
Everything that was on their shipboard account all that they had purchased during the course of their cruise. Additional to that during the quarantine period they were given unlimited alcohol beverages, sundries and some guests even asked for makeup products and clothes from the onboard Boutique and they were given everything.

On the last day the ruby was in port otago I took 4 crew for a wee trip up to larnach castle etc... was a lovely time.... a week and a half later everyone was in lock down and the ship was locked down with crew on it over 90 days later they finally got to go home. They were looked after so very well, and I'm happy to see all crew members I know survived. Doing tour dispatch when these ship arrive is always a treat x much love to princess lines...you will be back!!!
The most insane thing about this cruise line is that I was on another ship in February 2020 right before the worsening of the outbreak and we actually saw the cruise like princess docked in the middle of the ocean (she was near a docking station but definitely nowhere close to letting passengers off). We were arriving at our final stop for the 7 day cruise actually. At the time my family and I hadn’t heard of the severity of Covid since we didn’t have signals on our phones during the trip, being in the middle of ocean and a foreign country primarily. That being said, when we returned and our lives resumed, so many people at work asked me about the Princess ship and I was like I only saw that she was seemingly isolated but we never got near her / nor her to us. Also, Covid qas suddenly serious and we had just gone on a 7 day cruise in foreign countries without masks. Thankfully no one in my family (still to this day) contracted the deadly virus. I am sorry to hear about that outbreak through. It’s crazy to think that we actually witnessed it firsthand and none of us had any idea what qas actually going on inside the ship itself. And for perspective, at the port we landed at, we were 1 of about 9 other ships. Princess was the only one not docked for passengers to exit. I remember thinking it was because they were leaving but also that didn’t make sense considering other cruise ships on different routes were docked with us.

Nice documentary. I was really sad watching this as I had the chance to cruise the Diamond Princess in Nov. 2018. It's a beautiful ship and had lots of fond memories cruising with them. Both the Diamond and Ruby Princess are currently anchored in Manila Bay alongside two dozen or so other large cruise ships form Carnival, Costa, Royal Caribbean, Holland America, P&O, Cunard including the Queen Elizabeth, among others and most of the Princess Cruise fleet.
Yeah I've been on a few different ones when I was young. Favorite thing to do was go and stuff myself with desserts at the buffet. Surprised my parents just let me, especially my dad who was strict. My mum would let me do whatever I felt like though.

Have you used garlic? The Alycin (I think that's how it's spelled, but please forgive me if I'm wrong and correct me.), will help your body along with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, Zinc, L-Yceine along with the tumeric really helps. You'll need up to 3 grams of Vitamin C, 800 IUs of Vitamin E, (Toccopherols from fish liver oil, Vitamin D3 is 5,000 IUs, 25-35 mgs of zinc Citrate or Zinc Silicate, 1,000 mgs of Garlic oil in a soft jel or up to 4 cloves of raw garlic with food including salad, fish, chicken or shellfish along with vegetables. Soups are great, too, but crush the raw garlic and rub it on toasted bread or in warm rice with broth to make it taste a bit better. I prefer to take the soft jels, because I don't want my breath to smell or taste of too much garlic. You may also make Sadziki sauce with Greek yogourt with chopped cucumber, olive oil and just a touch of lemon juice. Make sure the garlic is raw, and you can crush one clove in a cup of the yogourt mixture.

Some people took home remedies they made and stil died from the disease, and some even died from the toxicity of their home remedies, because they even injected themselves with them. You've obviously got to know what you're doing, and some people might learn a thing or two from your experience, as long as they use common sense and take precautions to make sure they don't do anything that would hurt them or others. Really, Diamond Princess did all they could to keep the passengers safe, especially given that we didn't know then what we know now about it. They did the best they could with *what they had*, and should be commended for doing all they could. As soon as the first case hit, they basically shut down, which is more than could be said for other ships, like the Ruby Princess.

It's so sad, from one human being to all those families who lost someone due to the covid19 I send you my sincere condolences and may the person who lost their lives may they rest in peace!!!! As I'm watching this video I started to cry because I am so upset. I wonder if this was done because of the population of people that are growing around the world that maybe that's why someone invented the coronavirus. Just imagine if there were no more wars, all countries worldwide would live in peace, love, and respect!!!

We used to cruise all the time when our son was growing up 1994 - 2012 and through that time we were never sick on board and it was great, fun and exciting!!! Today, 2020 cruising is OVER!!!

Such an amazingly REAL account of this snapshot of these peoples’ lives. It was hard to not become emotional while watching this documentary. Now as we are coming to the end of 2021, it is surreal to see how our world has evolved to the needs associated with this virus that is still such a threat. It makes me wonder if we will ever get to the point where we can talk about this deadly virus in the past tense.
Do did the passengers get laundry done? 38 days of isolation - Wow. These were some strong people, especially those with no windows or balconies. Amazing strength do deal with that situation.
Getting stuck in those inside cabins must’ve been TORTURE. Atleast the Balcony is more comfy
