  • COVID-19 has brought attention back to deadly viruses. Meet hard-working scientists in Singapore and elsewhere racing to identify emerging pathogens, battle existing viruses and co-operate to find urgently-needed treatments and vaccines.
We follow a Thai expert on an expedition to find out if bats in her country carry the same virus as bats in China, thought to be the origins of the new coronavirus. Meanwhile, a Singapore bat expert is exploring the mysteries of why bats can carry so many viruses without getting sick.
In Cambodia we see new research into the viruses carried by rodents, birds and pigs that have the potential to cause the next human pandemic.
In the Philippines we meet the frontline healthcare workers trying to eradicate an old scourge - polio.
And in Iceland and Singapore, we see scientists studying and sharing the genomes of COVID-19 cases to help track the disease’s spread and develop vaccines to save lives.

Covid has a lower lethality rate than the flu. There was no need for measures.

I think that being able to close these wet markets is wishful thinking. It's so ingrained in their culture and Chinas economy has benefited greatly from this pandemic. While the rest of the countries economies weaken, Chinas grows. By 2030, 9 short years, China is projected to be the world's leading economy. Everything is made there and that needs to change but it's cheaper and greed is powerful. I pray I'm wrong and that they close these places for good.

    • @spicysalsaking791
      @spicysalsaking791 3 года назад +2

@@praem9597 It does NOT have that low of a mortality rate. Even if it's WAY less than originally thought/originally "was" (e.g. mainly hit older retirement homes in northern Italy/Western Europe in first wave, hence ~5-8%+ listed mortality rate at the time), and even if we've massively undercounted the number of asymptomatic/mildly smptomatic infections (listened to podcast interviewing a doc who's a independent review board memebr who reviewed Pfizer's application, and he mentioned during a tangent that he think the ~12-14mil registered cases is off by a factor of 5x minmum, 8x maximum, say it's the maximum for a second. The current US death rate is ~1.8% (18x+ worse than even the worst average flu strain year per decade or so, i.e. 0.1% at absolute worst years excluding outlier years that are worse than the typical worst 1-2 years/strains per decade).
If we assume he's right and there's been up to 800% more actual cases, that STILL puts the mortality rate at 0.225%, which is 225% more deadly than even the worse average flu season every decade. If you assume the minimum at 5x more than reported, it's 360% as deadly as the worst of the semi-common flu years/strains.
If you take an average of his highly, highly educated guess range, it's STILL ~277% more deadly than some of the worst semi-common flu strains/strain combos in a year that show up 1-2 years per decade. If you compare it to any one average flu mortality year, we're talking a likely minimum of ~3-5x more deadly than "the flu," point blank period, almost undisputable at elast 2.5x mroe deadly.
And what matters isn't primarily the mortality rate anyways. It's the degree of contagiousness, the incubation period/when along that timeline contagiousness occurs, and the average % of cases being aympstomatic/"pre-symptomatic" THAT REALLY MATTERS. Even if this virus was only HALF as deadly as the badder flus of the bunch, this would still be a massive societal health risk!
I'm not debating politics or lockdowns or mandates. I'm just sharing the facts. If you rubber stamp any data that don''t conveniently fit your pre-conceived notions on a particular topic as nothing but fake news garbage, then just remember that you're essentially saying to yourself and/or others that you and your source of life's "truths" are infallibly correct, you're not open to the idea of double checking/confirming what you already believe to be true, and that you/your source of info basically already know everything a human could ever reasonably learn/know, and that your source provides nothing but the non-spun, non-politicized, altruistic truth.
No matter what ideological/political ideas someone has or where they "are" on the established spectrum society has created to label people, having a mindset/pov/believe system that mirrors my previous paragraph is extremely susceptible to social manipulation, has no interest in searching for "ultimate" truths, and likely will never engage in a politically-charged discussion/dialogue/debate in good faith whatsoever. They've basically built an echo chamber earphone headset and they walk around with it equipped and activated 24/7.
I'm not saying that you must happen to be someone like this. I truly hope you aren't. But if you are, you should do some significant self-contemplation about your ability to always question "THE" narrative, the most popular narrative, and frankly every and all nuanced political narratives presented/provided by literally everyone. If you aren't one of the puppet-strung automatons that I described but you know someone that is, try to do your best to get them to question the primary counter narrative JUST AS HARD as they questioned the official narrative. Life isn't black or white, and neither the primary narrative nor the primary anti-narrative are usually mostly correct. It's almost always "gray," something else altogether or a combination of both or a multitude of narratives. Cherry pick the portions backed up by both your intuition and the highest quanity, high quality, least likely to be biased data, and select that as part of YOUR worldview, your view of the narrative. Then look into other aspects of a narrative and find the most logical one to likely be true, and ONLY THEN see if it fits with your other beliefs. Don't go "cherry picking" after your hammer down the bedrock of your view of the narrative, and even then always be open to recognize you're likely wrong and be willing to start from scratch.
Until you/others think for them selves like this, "vote buying" via targeted ads and paid programming ("news" media, talk shows, websites, etc.) will continue to manipulate people like puppets, yes on BOTH sides of the political spectrum.

Asian countries HAVE to regulate animal markets better. It’s insane how disgusting those places can be and it’s shocking to know that people actually buy from them knowing how disgusting it is. It would serve those countries better to open up factories for raising and harvesting animals. Many of those animals shouldn’t even be sold. It’s ridiculous the reality that they live in.
The laboratory that’s breeding bats, that may be a great idea and all, but surely there are going to be a lot of viruses they aren’t going to be exposed to with not being with other animals. A laboratory is more isolated.

They eat bat wing soup every year at new years...have done so for many years, thousands even.
When China was closed to the world they had no foods being imported. They were mostly very poor people who ate whatever protein source they could find. With billions of people eating the animals and fish of the land they had long ago depleted their natural resources of fauna, meaning they could no longer rely on these for protein sources.
Back in the late 80's and early 90's national geographic did a study on why all the song birds were dying, turns out the people were eating the birds food source, ( bugs) and the birds were starving to death as well as being eaten themselves.
When China was closed to us they were not a threat, but with them importing junk worldwide we are all at risk to their poor animal husbandry practices and disease cross contamination

If you don't mind, I want make a note about vaccines. I don't get why a pharma co. gets to own a patent for which they have been subsidized in formulating. Where is the justice in that? The taxpayers help pay for the research and then get to pay bigtime for the vaccines to save their lives. Doesn't anyone else see how unfair this all is?

Just eat chicken, beef, lamb if meat is so important. We have much more knowledge about these animals.
