Battle Against Bacteria: A Race Against The 'Superbug' | Disease Hunters | Part 2/3

  • Humanity has been battling bacteria for centuries. Today, Tuberculosis still kills 1.5 million people yearly. The discovery of antibiotics revolutionised healthcare and saved countless lives. But as antibiotic-resistant “Superbugs” emerge, how do we stay one step ahead?
    We look at how bacteria, which are crucial to human survival, can wreak havoc in our bodies; and how scientists in Singapore used genome sequencing to discover a new strain of food-borne bacteria.
    We see how antibiotics were discovered and how evolution and over-usage are leading to resistance. This resistance makes the fight against the ongoing TB pandemic tougher. Singapore has kept TB under control for years but a multidrug resistant TB outbreak in 2012 served as a warning. The race to discover new antibiotics is urgent. While some look into odd places like cockroaches, researchers in Singapore are exploring bacteriophage and polymers that kill bacteria differently from antibiotics. Knowledge keeps us one step ahead.

    A lot of people idolize actors, singers, athletes, but these are the real people we should be looking up to. The world will keep spinning without tiktokkers, meanwhile these researchers and doctors put themselves in contact with deadly viruses daily in hope to better humanity. I hope to become a dr one day, I’m still working on my bachelors degree though. After watching Ebola go down I felt so hopeless and wanted to be able to have the education and experience to be able to drop everything and help attend to these deadly outbreaks. Those drs that tended to the Ebola patients are my idols.

      This comment is underrated. To add to this- now we’re becoming more aware that climate change is also now making these kinds of things worse. We humans are so anthropocentric, I encourage everyone to look into biocentrism or ecocentrism.

    • @rosesprog1722
      @rosesprog1722 2 года назад +1

      @@Lex-rc1gr Yes, commonly called: bellybuttoncentrism! I may be wrong but I don't think that the big shoes who do the most damage will do much about anything, these people are very well trained to do one thing, generate profits, insane profit margins, for them breaking the law, lying, killing someone, starving to death a whole population, , poisoning the water table, oil spills, uranium weapons, etc, are only tools of the trade and we are only useless eaters living lives of poverty without purpose, education or conviction. Now, imagine you are one of them, filthy rich, a little bored, lonely and you see those worthless beings reproduce faster than your usual famines, genocides and wars can eliminate them what do you do? He he, a little genetic research and labs that leak and we're back on business.
      Our societies are not doing well, simply because they are not built for us, there is a lot of money to be made but so little love to give, we will have to solve that eventually. We're in a bloody mess right now and there's not much we can do about it but accusing them, any them will only make it worse, what I can do is not much but it's a lot more interesting plus it allows me to bask in a little anthropocentrism, biocentrism and egocentrism... until they find a cure! : ) Cheers.

    So, there is no update to include the superbug "C. Aris, " we are currently dealing with? Not an bacteria but a yeast superbug. Mild for healthy individuals, but if immocommpermised, the death rate in the US has been 30%-60%. 1 in 3 die. Was rare in the US, but cases have been climbing at an alarming rate and currently drawing media attention. Unfortunately bacteria isn't the only thing being strengthened over time. If there is a video covering other superbugs would be welcome to watch it!

    I tried to explain to my sister that these chicken shops with the 1.99 chicken dinners use meat imported from the far east . I tried to explain that they use hormones and antibiotics in their feeding of livestock and to be careful not to have these meals regularly. It must have side affects for consumers . I mean testosterone is used a lot and we know that females have some testosterone in trace amounts in their bodies but if you notice your getting hair where you shouldn't be and you have trouble getting over chest infections after a two medicine anti biotic regime it must have something to do with the diet you have. My nephew is ten but she says he is going through puberty . He eats a lot of chicken and processed chicken at that which comes from Thailand, Vietnam etc . I reckon this is the cause of a lot of medical abnormalities that household experiences. Am I right here or not ? If anyone else could reply with a honest answer or theory I would like that so please reply thank you.
