  • It's time to completely overanalyze two very awesome Harry Potter sets - 4706 Forbidden Corridor from 2001 and its 2021 counterpart, 76387 Hogwarts: Fluffy Encounter.

    Newer Lego sets seem to be much more focused on looks and older sets more focused on being good playsets. Cramming tons of small pieces onto a facade makes new sets really expensive and not as fun to play with.

      Indeed. Definitely a lot different than it used to be as they try to appeal to both adults and kids

      I feel like the 2022 took a step back in that regard though, being a 2002 remake. The 2018 was definetily just for show, but the 2022 offers great playability aswell as a nice exterior

      You say they are focusing in on looks but i would disagree and tell u that the older set has got way better looks, the minifigs you got the stairs, that all looks just wsy better in my opinion!

      Definitely a reason why they chose displayability over playability is the fact that the kids who had the old sets, or couldn't get them 20 years ago, now buy them entirely for nostalgia, because we are now ooooolddd :( And younger kids don't care about Potter.
      Same with the majority of Star Wars sets. The target group are people between 20 and 40

    I personally love the 2001 set much better myself. Honestly like you said the best part of the 2021 build is the exterior but theres so much more with the 2001 set as far as play. Plus I freaking love the spiral staircase! That was always my favorite part to play with. Disguise it as a pillar then magically turn it into a staircase!

  • @DJ.KyloRen
    @DJ.KyloRen Год назад +6

    It's interesting to see how the "philosophy" of the design of the sets changed over time, seeing the new interpretation of the old ones actually gives you a new sense of appreciation of the older ones, yes they took creative liberty with their aesthetics, but they did focused on the experience and play value...The thing is it can be something extremely simple like you said including a small mechanism for the devil's snare, or having fluffy's mouth(s) open and close, those little things that current designers seem to underestimate unfortunately. The question they should be asking for every set is "what can you DO with this set?". There's way more things that the older set allows you to do, while the new one seems to mostly just tick some boxes...

    I'm very excited for these new sets, because I desperately wanted the older ones when I was younger (I did not exist when they were released) but I'm also kind of annoyed at lego for the differing roof colors. Until now, the reboot sets have had gray roofs and now they just decide to shift it to another color. I do prefer the green roof, but now if I put these sets with my other harry potter ones it'll look weird :(
    Also yeah, I do like the older one better just because I don't really see the need for an exterior. iirc the actual scene took place deep within hogwarts castle, so the more dungeony feel of the original set feels better since it's not a standalone building like the Clock Tower or Great Hall. Imo the minifigs with capes are way cooler, although they do get a bit annoying when you're trying to play with the characters

    ball joint receiver pieces only come in light gray because they need to be sturdy to a much higher degree than other lego parts. even extremely small structural differences in the pigment can affect how much weight the part can support, especially over years

    I'd be curious to see how you'd go about re-designing this playset yourself. With the old set focused on function and the new one on aesthetic, it'd be really cool to see what you'd come up with. Even if it was just a kit-bash style of merging the two.

    I remember when lego sets used to concentrate on the play function of their sets. The sets used to be more about the “make your own adventure” aspects of the toy and included extra pieces so that kids could make their own stories with the pieces included. But now at the expense of the play feature, lego as a company has decided to completely abandon the playability of their sets and instead solely concentrate on the collectability and aesthetics of their sets.
    Sure they look nicer but you can’t really play with them.

    Reading the comments here gives me the sense that most of us agree the 2021 is inferior to its predecessor, especially in terms of playability. I’m wondering: maybe it’s because the 2001 sets were released at a time when kids (my generation ish) were growing up with the movies-reading the books, watching the films, playing with the sets. I doubt many kids today are getting into Harry Potter the way we did. And I wouldn’t be surprised if the target audience of Lego Harry Potter is not kids but those of us who grew up with the Harry Potter franchise. So for us playability is not a consideration-we mostly collect these sets rather than play with them. Hence their ‘easthetic’ emphasis. What do you think?

    • @CheeseyStudios
      @CheeseyStudios  Год назад

      It was, for lack of a better word, a truly magical time to be growing up. The anticipation for the new books/movies, there was nothing like it, and likely never will be again. I know that the designers making the sets these days are likely in the same mindset that you brought up. They grew up with it, and now are focusing on the fun details only real fans would appreciate, because that probably who this is being targeted to. I mean, the Fantastic Beasts franchise doesn't exactly seem to be winning over new fans...

    "I feel like i was a little too harsh on this set" (2021)
    I could not possibly feel more different... You where *extremely* generous with it, even ridiculously so.
    I'd say the 2021 is a *direct downgrade in every single way.*
    The exterior is ugly, the playability is non-existent, it's empty (almost pathetically so) and devoid of soul, fluffy looks god-awful... etc...
    Literally the only thing i liked was the bottle technique, but that is in no way specific to this set, so yeah.
    The old set? Awesome pieces like fluffy and the roof tile, great playability and creative use of the concept, great details like the printed flute, etc!
    It blows the new one out of the water in every single way! :D

    The new one, objectively, looks better, in a generic, compatible way. It looks like Hogwarts Castle. But the old one looks like the dark, sinister hallway, the stair adds so much, because it was a vital part of the movie that forced the kids to go there. It covers all the central set pieces of the scene, the door, the key, the dog, the trap door, the devil's snare.
    The new one is prettier. But it could be any room if you removed Fluffy.
    The only thing the old one is really missing is the walls. Fluffy's room is more of a platform and doesn't show the claustrophobic space. And lacks the very well done harp.
