The 2001-2003 lego Harry Potter figures really have a charm to them! Their faces have a more exaggerated cartoonish expression that gives the figures personality, which is why I don’t think they quite worked when they put it on the fleshed toned heads Thanks for sharing this collection!
That's a good point too - it is bizarre to me that they just copy/pasted most of the 2001 prints on to new colors for 2004, but hey, it could have been worse (like 2005 Ron and Hermione worse lol)
Great overview video of what I think were the best years of Lego Harry Potter! The uncanny valley effect that switching to flesh toned figures added was a total deal breaker for me. The figures that you were pointing out (maybe except Malfoy from Chamber of Secrets) that didn't have a costume counterpart in the movies are the way they are because they simply weren't based on the movies, as the first one had yet to finish filming and editing when the first 2001 HP sets were designed! This is why the first year of HP sets are dear to me; they were re-imaginations of scenes from the book, not just recreations of scenes from a movie. The approach to the designs in the 2001 HP sets just showed off a sense of imagination and wonder that was lost as the franchise moved towards the goal of total screen accuracy, in my opinion. I have the whole Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone collection on display with some of the following year's Chamber of Secrets sets as well. Truly an awesome and underappreciated era for Lego!
Under-appreciated is completely right! Yeah, the kits weren't all that pretty, but they were tremendous fun. So many secrets and moving parts in each set, and the ability to configure them in any which way was wonderful. I'm happy at the very least to see LEGO continuing that approach with the new wave of sets.
A couple of the not screen-accurate costumes actually remind me of the illustrations that were used for merchandise before the movies came out, so around 2000-2001, especially the hair pieces they'd continue to use (that Ron specifically had a bowl cut, unlike Rupert Grint).
I think the blue shirt Harry is meant to be his outfit he wears on the night bus because all the other night bus sets have Harry minifigures with very similar outfits
They are similar, but the issue is that the Prisoner of Azkaban movie hadn't come out yet when this figure released, so they must have been referencing something from the first two movies. It's also possible LEGO was given some preliminary source material that didn't make the cut (like Peeves again)
@@Toaster003 Definitely, especially when a lot of these costumes are quite accurate to the movies, these random ones just come out of nowhere, but they're still unique to the theme! I wonder understand if they just reused a generic torso from somewhere else, but these were only produced for Harry Potter. Crazy stuff
Early 2000's Lego is my jaaaaaaaaam! Love all of these, and actually own most of 'em too! Lucky enough to have bought that olive green torso off a friend (when I was a kid and had friends) for only a buck - still got it to this day, with no cracks thankfully ;D
What a steal! This horribly cracked version had to be like $8 lolol. Still happy to have him at all. The real question is though - do you have the troll?
@@CheeseyStudios I actually do! And here's the exciting part - I actually have this wonderful creature straight out of my childhood! I'm astounded he managed to survive so many years in such great condition (got the cloth coverings too) since I was a pretty unhinged kid at the time (I have some vivid memories of obliterating Pepper for some strange reason). The troll I'm pretty sure came into my humble collection before him but perhaps the charm of his unusual form is what stopped me from doing anything sacrilegious :')
@@AntoniTolwinski HA! Yeah, my brother and I were pretty violent with our bricks too, so I totally can understand. Glad he made it out unscathed though - that's awesome!
@@CheeseyStudios Also got two of those sand red Gilderoy Lockharts - somewhat by accident actually, but very happy to have a double in this case because I'm a huge fan of the hairpiece. Only got one sand red cape though, but yeah... can't believe I managed to get that original Chamber of Secrets; the elusive dream set that finally made it into my collection
@@AntoniTolwinski That was my chase set for years too. Turned out that my wife had it in her childhood collection of all things! Her family's only Harry Potter set just happened to be the one I DIDN'T have, ha!
Wow even 20 + yrs and they still had printed capes and the torso prints. I really like the troll. I feel we need more of him lol.. great video and great looking collection.
They went all out on these figures, and Harry Potter as a theme in general. They hold up surprisingly well! The troll for sure is a standout. So so good!
Great video, I really appreciate you going over all the old (best) themes and figures. Like you said I do think there is something special that comes from the old figures, its just such a nice style that is uniquely lego, and it certainly carries through on these figs. Of course I have to mention Lockhart, such a nice figure, and the accuracy is pretty great. I currently only have the sand red parts to him but I def wanna change that in the future.
Thank you! I do hope you can get the rest of the parts to Lockhart. He's a must-have in my opinion whether you're a Harry Potter collector or not. He's just an all around fascinating (and really well done) LEGO minifigure.
I think all the "sweater" versions of Harry, Ron and Hermione are supposed to from Chamber of Secrets when they are at Diagon Alley and meet Lockhart. In that scene Hermione is wearing a blue sweater under her cloak. Harry is wearing a dark green sweater under his cloak. And Ron is wearing a Red sweater under his cloak (this makes his minifigure the furthest from the actual on screen outfit). Perhaps Lego was working off of concept art for those minifigures and the final costumes for the movies were changed.
Old lego Snape caused so much confusion for me as an adult. I didn't grow up with Harry Potter due to my mom being very religious so my only exposure was through the lego catalogue. In 2016, me and my friends watched all the films on blue ray, which was my first watching of them, and when we were watching Order of the Phoenix I asked if Snape was ever going to glow. My friends were really confused
I love the early days of licensed Lego themes and how they gave the figures all distinct styles. The faces in Harry Potter looks different to Star Wars, NBA, etc. It’s nice that nowadays everything adheres to the same style more or less, but it gave every IP a more unique charm that we don’t see as much now.
Oh yeah, NBA was wild 🤣 But I totally get what you're saying! The uniformity of course makes customization easier in some ways, but I do like it when things were more distinct too
Definitely! I plan to once I get all the sets back together. I've got a good chunk of them, but I still need to rebuild Dumbledore's Office, The Dueling Club, Aragog in the Forbidden Forest, Dobby's Release, and a few others.
I think the sand green torso for one of the Harrys is meant to represent his green sweater when Harry and Ron first play wizards chess before Hermione leaves for Christmas. That is weird how it is in a nocturne alley set though.
Hey, I have a small clue for you (I love to search for things like this) Few designs from first wave: Dumbledore's and Ron's for example are shared with Royal Doulton Harry Potter figures. I am pretty sure that toy companies got some raw sketches to make products based on them!
I have a question about these old Harry Potter minifigures i noticed they don’t have Lego logos under the feet? But instead you can found them inside the waist . Is that normal ? Just want to know thanks
Have you ever posted instructions on how to create those awesome minifigure stands? And, I see in your videos that the capes have been scraped(?) on the edges to make them look more like fabric. Is that something you do intentionally, or have you bought them that way over the years? Do you purchase multiple of each minifigure, and if so, do you keep one mint and distress the others?
The capes just ended up like that from years of play - I know they aren't the prettiest, but I do appreciate that they were actually used. I'm not much of a believer in a "Mint" collection unless I plan on reselling them later. As for the stands, this video will get you pointed in the right direction at least! ruclips.net/video/0-1gm3YESRw/видео.html
It's a very strange feeling to see you discuss the minifigures that were, for a while, part of the only Lego sets I had. Now I'm a basic bitch and just very recently got into Star Wars Lego, lol.
