This was my first Harry Potter Lego set EVER. It was realeased I believe right before december and it just called to me. I had not read the books and I believe the first movie was not yet released at that point but all sets from that first wave were just magical.
The charm in these older sets is that they're really just fun toys first and foremost. Like you said including these large pieces gives you a lot of room and opportunity to play around, have the minifigs go up the stairs, explore what's inside the chest, open the door to reach fluffy, have fluffy try to eat them, escape through the trapdoor, get stuck in the devil's snare...They're designed as toys, only based on the source material but still remaining very much their own thing. Newer sets are way nicer and better looking and try to be more accurate with better building techniques, minifigs, moulds, prints, etc...but often times the play functionality isn't thought of enough.
I always loved those staircase pieces and I think we could use them a lot more in modern Harry Potter sets. 'cause when you connect this with the other OG Hogwarts castle sets, you end up with the staircases giving the entire thing a much more whimsical and magical look. I think this is why I still have the original sets assembled and on display, whereas the 2018 revival ones have already all been disassembled.
I love these older set reviews! Nostalgic fs I remember gawking at these sets as a kid but never being able to get them. Great review as usual, hoping to see more classic set reviews down the line (:
After all these years I never knew the purple cape was supposed to be his invisibility cloak 😂best fluffy and theres something just so nostalgic about those spiral staircase pieces to me
In addition, the style of roof seen here in sand green was never used again after 2001. The "Newel steps" comprising the stairs in the old light gray would have been exclusive to this and two other Harry Potter sets (4709 and 4729), but they also appeared in a set from the short-lived "Island Xtreme Stunts" theme (6740) in July 2002.
Hey Holly! That Fluffy is sooo good! Thanks for doing these old-school set reviews. I'm so old, that my first Lego set, I still have it, is #200 (1974), a family of not-so-mini figures (with segmented bendy arms). It has a cute little black dog made of 5 or 6 classic pieces. Imagination was a KEY part of Lego in the Seventies!😂💕
Just got this on eBay today with the original box for $60 including shipping and tax, not the greatest deal but everything was in great shape so it was worth it to me
I miss old lego sets, I didn't have HP sets when I was younger, but they had better play value, new sets is all about display, which I'm definitely not against but I just miss the older feel of LEGO
So that's why some Harry Potter minifigures had purple capes! I'm surprised I didn't make the connection sooner! BTW, Fluffy's a male. Hagrid refers to him with male pronouns in the books and movies.
I like these 2001 Sets. They just have a certain atmosphere and character that feels like watching the movies for the first time again. That is something modern models just cant quite do for me.
The reason the old hogwarts sets have more charm is because the simplicity allows for different interpretation and more imagination. Makes for better toys than a highly detailed scale model type sets

i got this set used a few months ago. these G1 sets looked like crap back in the day, but now their vintage value is thru the roof! 😮
