    Jeff I so love your videos and it makes my day.
    You are getting to be a old guy but I am already there at 77 and you have so much knowledge that you are trying to pass on
    to others it is just outstanding. I was into trucks, tractor trailers and then Heavy equipment at the end of my working days.
    I can say the best thrill of my days there was getting into a White Freightliner and driving it.
    It had a v12-71 Detroit with a 13 speed Fuller transmission and that sound you never forget.
    31 years I spent on the railway but the last 10 were the best of all the years working on machines loading and unloading overseas containers. Operating these big monsters mobile and gantry cranes was the highlight of my life time.
    I still miss it today after all these years. God Bless you Jeff and have many healthy years ahead of you.

    That was a textbook upgrade. Even if your MPG is only slightly improved, over time that will add up quick. Not to mention the performance boost of being able to maintain speed on a grade. Keeping your engine compartment from becoming an oven and cooking all the hoses, pipes and wires is another big plus. Oil change intervals...the list just keeps going!

    Rolls Royce had this all figured out on the Merlin when they came up with 2 stage superchargers. Between, they knew it was crucial to have a heat exchanger to drop the air temp as much as possible before the second supercharger, otherwise the air temp skyrockets in the second stage of compression and its almost useless.

    Boost is only a number, its correlation to power is not a constant. Drive pressure is just as important a number in the scheme of power and ecomony. The best fuel economy occurs when you have the least boost you need to make the smoke clean up and the lowest drive pressure. If your boost is less than your drive pressure then a lot of your boost pressure is actually backed up exhaust pressure. Looking forward to seeing how the switch blade winds up performing long term. :-)

    Jeff.... Love your channel and have been subbed to it ever since the first video I watched from you. When I was living in MT. I wish I had known about you then... I would have come down for a visit.. with your permission, First.. of course.Just so you're aware, as well as for the Many "out there" who wrongly call the Cat C15 (versus the C-15 with Single turbo) a "Twin Turbo" engine.
    The C15 is NOT "twin Turbocharged".... it Is, Compound Turbocharged... meaning that it has multiple turbo's with Different A/R ratios... in this case a Low pressure, feeding into a High pressure turbo. Twin turbo's imply exactly as it sounds... Two turbos of identical A/R ratio's.... as used on "V" configured engines.
    Compound turbo set-ups can be and are used on "V" engines as well... and talk about a "snake pit of pipes when set up like that on "V" engines.
    Anyway.... I was Not trying to be "critical" at all.... just wanted to set the Terminology straight, and the difference between the two. Triple Compound turbo's are also commonly seen on the small diesels used in diesel Drag Racing, and sometimes in some the diesel classes of Sled Pulling (talk about blowing stuff up!!) as well.
    PS: Is Jim Blaylock still in business... at least as far as the Switchblade Turbo is concerned?..... His website for it, doesn't "seem" very functional anymore.

    I put a a switch blade on my n14 and it really hurt my jake break! I then had to order a selinoide to lose the flap on the turbo! That needs to be told to people when thinking about buying one because if you run the mountains hauling heavy and you don’t have a solenoid on that turbo then you will heat your brakes up!

    Jay: After the old man died, they stopped specing 15 spds and went to standard cab interiors instead of the Splender option. Kids changed to a simple paint job. I’ll send you a picture of the old paint scheme on a truck that Juab County bought for a transport from Art. I bought it from the county. They also stopped specing two spd Eaton rears. They shaved some weight but they sure weren’t the same trucks the old man spec’d. If you’ve got one of those stubby little Eaton metric 10 spds, pray over it daily. The spacer/washer on the output shaft does not get oil and we’ve had a constant rash of exchange boxes. I asked our foreman if we could put 13 or 18 spds in and he told me we would be moving cross members and changing angles on the drive axles as well. I'm gonna look into just getting the old 9 spds. They were bomber and built for strong and not just saving weight. It’s the same transmission that when you take the back off and add a different range case, it becomes a 13 spd.
    Robinson’s loaded to 129,000 every trip and they needed startability on hills. That’s why the old man spec’d 15 spds and 2 spd axles. I guess the splits in these 10 spds will get you started but you must be paying for it later with a long split.
    Those other truckers talking about running it down in the high torque rpm range instead of taching it up have probably never hauled over 80K lbs. I grind up the grades at 2100 with my C16 and 11 axle lowboy. At 20 mph with a tailwind, it’s better to keep the air running through those heads faster. I tried replying to your question through You Tube but it mailer demoned. Our older Robinson trucks are awesome. The later ones are the 10 spds.

      Duncan MacKenzie going to a single turbo is s good idea. Just stay away from that silly thing. Just watch the video of him driving with the camera pointed at it. As soon as he shifts and hits the throttle it can't be more than a half second till the switch blade is fully opened. That thing does nothing.

    Well I would love to take that twin turbo setup. Then get the bearings MicroBlue.com coated. Which will reduce heat, increase ramp up speed and mild pressure increases.

    I have a 2006 Peterbilt 379 with the CAT C15 Acert twin turbo. Could you give me a rundown on what I need to go to a single turbo.. I noticed you didn't use the exhaust/intake port inserts making the ports smaller which I thought came with the kit. Thank you and I really enjoy your videos. VERY HELPFUL.

    • @Jpaydirt
      @Jpaydirt  5 лет назад

      Bigger ports equal more flow, you will need a pressure oil line from CAT, and depending on what type of manifold you get, ie: mid mount, or low mount you will have to fab up the drain line. mid mount, and low mount are how CAT refers to where the turbo mounts to the manifold, since you have a peterbuilt you will have to decide which one to use based on how your exhaust pipe hooks up and clearance with other things, you will have to rework your air inlet pipe, you will need a 6" inch rubber 90 and some clamps, watch all the videos of my install, I think I covered all the little things I had to do, but keep in mind my C15 had a brake saver

    Thoughts and hopes with Mr. McInerney, and his family. Wish it didn't have to be so. As for fire, yes, best time is during a snowstorm or blizzard where visibility is reduced or nil, that way you get fewer busybodies calling the Fire Dept. and wasting their time and yours. Calling in a fire can be a good thing, if you know for sure that property or a building is being destroyed, but when you can't see what it is and don't know what's being done, calling the FD to report a fire that you can see over the horizon five miles away without knowing about it, is not always the cool thing to do.

    Well one thing he didn't mention at all was turning off IVA's and rebuilding the engine with 16:1 pistons instead of the acert 18:1. Every person I've seen convert theirs to single has had issues that didn't rebuild the engine with low comp pistons. I'd like to know how long he's had this setup without rebuilding the engine and how relibable it's been and mpg ETC.

      Well it's still going strong since I did it, single turbos don't need low comp to operate, boost is boost

    Cool stuff as always. Had an Acert C15 in a '09 379EX, got 6mph pulling flatbed all over the western passes with an Eaton 9spd. Your KW was a Utah coal hauler pulling Bealls? Like Barney Trans? My opinion is 10's are trash. Thanks for you bit on the aquifer.

    so i guess the switchblade turbo is basically a compound turbo setup in 1 turbo. neat.

      We have plenty of Volvo trucks in Canada. Seen the best mileage with the pre egr Volvo d12 475hp. Good pulling power and avg 5.5-6.5 mpg. These engine will easily get to 2 million + miles

Switch blade sounds better any way. Thanks for the Videos man !!!!!!

    Check the average miles per gallon as the ECM logs it. My Peterbilt says 2.89 average over the lifetime of the ECM. My old Kenworth gets 6.5 with the 3406 A 425.
    Sorry to hear about anyone with health issues. Unfortunately,it's part of life.

    Man, that ten speed would have been the first thing to go if it was me! Pulling that much weight would suck with aything less than 10. I ran a mack 280 somthing hp with 5 speed pulling 80,000 took forevrr to get up to speed. But that turbo setup needed to happen too.

    Thank you for the explanation of why you went from 2 turbos to 1 .
    Have you put enough miles on that truck since the conversion , to have a better idea of the MPG's ? If not , please post it when you accumulate more data .
    Best of luck to you , :-)

      I drove a million miles at least, at 4 mpg---I know the feeling. In your case, with all that expert engine engineering you did and thousands of bucks spent, how about 5.25 mpg? About a 25% betterment? Hope it happens for you.

    • @brucewerner6023
      @brucewerner6023 6 лет назад

      I would hope after that expense and work--that it would average 5.25 mpg. About a 25% betterment on consumption. Not sure how many miles you go to break even--but maybe not too long. Good luck Jay,

    • @brucewerner6023
      @brucewerner6023 6 лет назад

      can't get my words down here. Hopefully you will get 5.25 average. That is a 25% increase in economy or thereabout.

    Truck runs roughly 40 degrees hotter under hood with twin turbos than single turbo does so belts hoses seals last about half as long.

    Nice work . I have a 1995 kw 900 with a 3406E
    Not getting a lot of boost it takes forever to to build boost, but at higher speed nothing can’t stop it . Is this normal ? I’m not an expert so don’t start with stupid comments
    Thanks for your help

    • @kwmiked
      @kwmiked 5 лет назад +1

      Sounds like a boost leak maybe? Check clamps on boots. Maybe wastegate on turbo, if it has one? Stuck part open? Bad intercooler, Leaking? Psi test it. Those are just a couple things to check. Could even be the type of tune it has in it . Has it always been like this? Or did the low boost thing just start? Lots of variables here

    • @Jpaydirt
      @Jpaydirt  5 лет назад +1

    • @juanrey1778
      @juanrey1778 5 лет назад +1

      Kwmike-D thanks for the help I’m going to do a leak test then replace the waste cage if needed .. the previous owner said he didn’t any issues before engine has about 170k since rebuild

    • @juanrey1778
      @juanrey1778 5 лет назад

      Jpaydirt it’s got a 13 speed around 8-9 gears only pushing like 8-10 psi

    • @specforged5651
      @specforged5651 4 года назад +1

      Juan Rey...If you are really only pushing 8-9 psi you’ve got a major issue. Maybe not a major issue to fix, but something is very wrong. Where is your boost gauge pulling it’s reading? If it’s after the intercooler then it very well could be a huge hole in the intercooler or even more likely a boot or clamp. If it’s on the compressor side or before the intercooler it’s more likely the turbo itself, but even with the wastegate stuck open it should make more than 8-9.
