I worked as an engineer at cat for 34 years. We had an issue with some switches and relays. if moisture gets inside the switches, little ice balls can form on the contacts and then the contact does not make contact. Normally the switches are sealed, but versions that are not sealed are available in the aftermarket, or the seal just failed over time. Anyway, you could check continuity through your key switch when trying to start. a test light on the key switch start terminal will tell you if thats where the problem is when its happening. Good luck!

Hi! Do you have any tips on how i can find a engine for my Caterpillar 933F. I live in Sweden and it's really hard to find stuff from over here. My engine is toast. I think from searching it's called 320. Serial number on the machine is 42A5019.

Next time when your tracks come off put something under the rear counter weight like a big block of wood or a stump or something and when you use the bucket to pick up the front the rear of the track will also come off the ground. Then you can just use the back hoe to guide the track back on with out pressure on it. It was pretty lucky that it just drove back on that probably made your day.

I can remember working in the extreme cold in Upstate New York with tracked equipment. At the end of the day we would always try to park the tracked vehicles up on a couple logs. This would make it easier to clean the tracks and rollers and keep the ground from freezing to the tracks. I grew up in Westmoreland County so I appreciate your cold weather !.

fantastic video as always Matt , many have said it already ,my brother in law use to work clearing land for Manitoba Hydro back in the 70's to build Hydro transmission lines to bring to power into Southern Manitoba and had i believe it was a fleet of D8's they used to do the work and winches on them with full cabs with heaters, it was not uncommon fro the temps to be a constant -30 or more below, just shy of 1800 miles north of you, he told me they use to haul trees from the front as you are doing and it worked for awhile until the terrain like yours on the hillside gets steep and they were equipped with wider tracks for the snow conditions and soon found out there were more breakdowns and down time, and decided to tow from the drawbar rom that point onwards and in the end it saved a ton of time and less breakdowns and saved allot of money on fuel and was just that much easier to haul trees from the drawbar, and he said tracks coming off was one of the things that would happen to them also, just my 2 bits worth, look forward to the next video, YES , this is just about the best thing to watch on a Saturday morning with a fresh pot of coffee 👍 your camera has some kickass detail

Watched that being done by logging outfits near Flin Flon/Snow Lake using the drawbar. They would also let machines idle all night
and sometimes over a long weekend when it was -40c or more. They would put up tents to warm machines up if they wouldn't start if
they were shut down, seems they would burn diesel running them or thawing them all out, didn't matter to them.

I still have a mess of 6x6 blocking pushed several feet into the mud where I had to jack a much smaller crawler up so I could even get to the lower half of the track. Not fun, not at all! I was amazed that you drove it back on. Crawlers are a godsend, except when they are worn out, and anything I can afford is going to be very, very worn. Good job man!

I think it will be a lot easier to pull those trees up the hill if you spin around and pull from the hitch, I know it seems counterintuitive to not be able to lift the load but just think of your old forklift safety triangle and where on that you’re attaching the chain. I do this all the time with my ASV and end up kicking myself for not just pulling from the back from the start.

Caterpillars plow through the soft forest floor, which is why we in Germany have gone back to using two draft horses. No riding horses, but the heavy horses that bring little to the rest. These pull the trunks one by one out of the forest without breaking the ground. On the way, the truck can then pick them up with the crane.
There are many forests in Germany. Half is in private hands. Harvested at most once per generation, 80 up to 100 years . Reforestation is much more important.

Matt, buddy... I am not a safety nazi, far from it... I believe in your acceptable risk policy. BUT, I also like your videos and would like to see a lot more of them. Spend some time in a commercial quarry or a big logging concern and you'll see their chain anchors are INSIDE the bucket. Put a big double strap D-ring deep in your bucket and a couple of weld-on hooks off to either side.
    A) you can use shorter chains
    B) shallower angles so you keep the weight off your nose wheels
    C) much easier on your ground people to hook you up
    D) if you paint everything and let it all wear in together, you can hide that you are OSHA compliant.
    E) it won't affect the way your bucket works to move material
    F) Most importantly, if the chain, rope, strap does break, you have the bucket between you and the flying chain, rope or strap
My neighbor (who still owns the family redwood logging concern) lost his older brother in 76 to a chain that whipped back over a bucket on a loader when they were working for his dad. That winter they moved all their anchors into their buckets and after hundreds of broken chains, not a single injury or punctured radiator.

While you are certainly correct about it being very expensive in relation to the resale value of the machine, I would urge you to consider the cost of a replacement machine. My wife keeps telling me I need a new truck but with a new 1/2 ton going for $40k and up, I could justify spending quite a bit on the truck I have, which is paid for. Thanks for sharing your real life projects with your fans. Work safe and smart. You do know that track loaders and excavators have slick tracks so they can turn without ripping the tracks loose with a load in the bucket on flat ground. They also are useless in snow and ice because of not having grousers.
You would be way ahead of the game by getting some new aftermarket sprocket sections bolted on in place of what's there. It looks like one supplier has 2 sprockets for about $550 each. You might be able to find them used cheaper. I bought a sprocket from Tracks (n) Teeth a couple years ago and it worked on my old Komatsu D20 dozer. With sprocket teeth as worn and short as yours your tracks will continue to give you trouble. Also check to see if there is a lot of slop in the idler roller on the front. If it wobbles it will throw tracks like crazy. Ask me how I know. New sprockets will go a long way to letting you use the old girl with its worn out under carriage for years.

One thing about getting your shop done will be, when it is that cold out, you will wait till warmer weather to run your big equipment.
Not much good actually comes out of running your stuff when it is that cold out.
I see you are careful to run straight up and down the hill.
Had to help my tow truck buddies get a 977 off a body in a creek after he tried to turn around half way up a hill that was frozen ground. Steel grousers turn into ice skates. He got pinned under the ROPS when it turned over, and tossed him out.

When I went to school in the 90s in Upstate NY for Heavy Equipment repair and operation. We would pull the dip stick and count to 10 if the oil did not move we would get a diesel heater and tarp to warm the engine up then crank it up. Also who ever is on camera did a great job nice and bright and clear..q

Hey, if you are gonna work on steep slopes, put some seatbelts in. I put a set of Simpson 5 points into my Cat 257B since almost everything is on slopes. It actually helps with control, since you no longer have to “hold” on while working. One of the big dangers in a roll over is falling out and being crushed by the machine.

The best way I warm my diesel pickup is to literally just drive it right away. I can let it set there and idle for seemingly forever and it never really warms up. (2002 7.3 F350).. But I noticed that, if I just jump in it right away and drive it--- limp it around a little bit. Putting the engine under a load like that will warm it up 10x faster. So that's just me-- I never let them idle for long-- put a light load on her and she'll warm up so much faster.

    • @FishFind3000

Diesels don’t make much heat at idle. They pretty much just cool down. They say drive them easy till warm and this for just about any engine.

    • @brianblank9921
      @brianblank9921 2 года назад +1

Great point, I live in a very hilly and wet area and am a field engineer for the roads department. Any time you remove trees from a slope you should re plant native ground coverage(which can be as simple as throwing some seed around) to stabilize the soil if the slope isn't going to be used. A heavy rain can cause slope destabilization (mudslide e.t.c) in as little as a few minutes without proper cover.

Starter...in cold metal shrinks and contacts might not get a connection. In Fairbanks, Alaska when it's minus 30 or more truck doors don't stay shut. And don't tighten lug nuts because when it's above freezing you won't get them off without a breaker bar. Good times in winter. Ha
