The teardowns and rebuilds are more enjoyable when the challenges are there too, wrong parts, recalcitrant fasteners, innovative workarounds, oily, dirty, old engines. This is not Jay Leno's garage, but it's way better for me. Thanks Jeff!
i totally agree Wilmer if it wasnt for those challenges what fun would it be i had a different machine to work on my neighbor bought a riding mower and it needed some maintenance done and fix the blades so they werent on all the time after getting the right parts for the mower and nothing fitting right i descovered they made a rider out of 3 different mowers talk about wrong parts lol
I love the sound of that ol’ Girl! Your absolutely right on that prelube for the turbo. I work on large Gas compression engines up here in the oil fields of Alberta. Caterpillar instruction will tell you to add clean engine oil to the oil supply port, rotate the turbo by hand, then refill it again before attaching the feed line. You are also very correct on the cleanliness required for this type of work. Caterpillar supplies a start up screen you can put in the feed line when we commission new equipment. It’s essentially a gasket but with a mesh built in. You run up the unit for 10-20 mins, shut down and swap it out for the normal gasket. Not sure if you ever seen some of the big Iron used in gas compressor stations, but a 16 cylinder 3600 series cat is bigger than that big beautiful D9 of yours! ( and there is MUCH bigger ones than a 3600) Anyway, love the channel keep on keepin on!
Jim aint no joke , straight up ,hard working guy who always delivers .I had a 12.7 detroit 500 ,Pittsburgh Power componets made it put 734 on the ground ! Of course I only used the highest "black box " setting to make those big ole 600 cummins boys cry .Always had to show em the BOL with 45-47 k in the box or they wouldn't believe it .Even made a few yella motor mashers shed a tear lol .But I bleed yella , just needed the detroit anchor to perform ,which it did ,thanks to Jim . Matt
WAY COOL MAN !!!!!!! THE. D - 9 LIVES Great job Jeff. Bet you picked up 100 HP on that install. Porting & polishing the head intake & exhaust runners/ ports will give a gas engine a 100 HP BOOST Due to improved flow. It will definitely improve diesel horsepower immensely.
Just a tip from an old man with bad knees, I bolted together some 2x16s and lay them on the tracks to have a smooth place to stand. Really looking forward to see it pushing material.
I like what you are doing with the Wabco , dump & run bet that is a hand full the first couple of times , getting used to how fast to " dump & run" you know what I mean? Still like seeing a new way to skin a cat! Dan McLeod -- Lodi,Ca.
great job on the install Jeff! looks like the boys are doing a great job getting those rock trucks dumped in a nice windrow for you to lay out. Hey if you're in a tight pinch on parts let me know. I even had a hard time finding belts for my 3406E and the only place that had them here in the Falls was Fleet Pride. And thanks for the added video this week, I don't think I could've survived until next week without it!!! ;-)
I've been a subscriber for quite some time but thought I'd let you know that another kiwi is following this channel great content, thanks barry from Dunedin south Island NZ.
“Starlings on the outside, mice on the inside.” Ha! Sounds like home. Always interesting to see what sort of company I’ll have when I start something up that has been sitting a while. Another good video.
Hell, on that weld, grab a rattle can throw a little paint on it and it's good ! 😊 I've seen a lot worse bubblegum weld, as long as it holds up! Cat sounds good, waiting to see what it does under load. Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
I Ask all!! Of you once again!! Is it Quite clear! Now why I call my buddy the professor of Dirt?? He runs them hard! And fixes! Them! When they need it!! You Rock Boss Man!
Good morning Jeff, thank you for the video and I find the technical side very interesting. What happened with the possible purchase of the other D9 ??. Take care my friend and catch you next time. 😎👍🇬🇧.
100% that smoke is essentialy unburned fuel so yea wasted energy and thats why this turbo eliminated half the amount of smoke then it used to produce because its mixing more air with that fuel and burning it better and if he can put it under load turn. The boost up i reckon he could burn some more and again eliminate even more of that smoke i hope i wrote it in away that it makes sense 🇦🇺
Another great video I've been flagging around a lot of great Caterpillar equipment Front end loaders,Excavators, and Vibratory rollers. One contractor has 3 different over the road dump trucks he started with Macks went to a couple of Cat trucks now i see he has three fairly new Kenworth's loving this job
I was about to ask why you changed the turbo, but in the last several minutes you explained it all. Good work. Let's see if you get all the positives that you desire when you test it.
Great video. If the turbo ever fails on my best bud's D7F, the SBT looks like a great replacement. Great intro and thanks for bringin back the GIRLS ! ! ! #jpaydirtrocks
Good video. Don't worry about the braze, its glued together. One thing I noticed it looked like the oil return line was touching the exhaust manifold, maybe it was just the perspective of the camera, I went back a few times to see. I've seen the result of engine oil on a screaming hot exhaust manifold, it gets exciting fast!! It'll be interesting to see the oil life after the repairs and since the engine will be more efficient maybe the fuel consumption will drop. Are you digging up dinosaurs on that project? LOL that last clip was great.
As someone who served his apprenticeship on Diesels ,small and big, I often wonder about the love of smoke by folks. It means you do not have enough air and a diesel belching smoke means something aint right. When you cranked up the engine before changing the turbo it sounded to me like you have some leaky nozzles ,but by installing a better design pump you are forcing more air and covering another possible fault. i say 'possible' because i am not on the machine itself ,another have i pulled and tested the injectors.. :-)
Well wait until you see what we can do versus the guys who used dump trucks last year, they were crying for more money because the dust and rocks were wreeking havic on there little dump trucks, plus your really going to get a laugh when you see what we did to make it work LOL
20 bucks/gal for straight 30W, seems high. I pay the same (19.97) at Wal-Mart for Delo 5/40 full synthetic HD for my E300TD Mercedes. Smoke may look cool, but any smoke, anywhere anytime means incomplete combustion. Love the videos, Jeff.
Have you ever thought about bypass filtration or centrifugal filtration to go with all the switchblade and af tuning possibly get you quite a few hrs on oil.
Hi mate, watched most of the videos now trying to catch up! Your knowledge is incredible- absolutely fascinating!!! Has it come from years on the tools or were you with Cat as well at some point? Dave
Straight 30 in that ? I know the old ones called for it, we had some really old D6s and Detroit 3v generators , I started putting cat 15/40 in them , wow they ran better and we're happier sounding. Before the Detroits leaked like crazy ,that all stopped.
I love these vids! It seems there's nothing you won't take on as a project. Which leads me to a question: Is there certain things that you will not do yourself on your own equipment? So far I have seen you tackle just about everything from wiring problems to transmission rebuilds...I am trying to think if there was a video that you said "nope, this ones going to get farmed out". So far, nothing comes to mind!
Interesting side note to your oil sampling ideas Jeff...........so before I moved to central oregon 5 years ago, I lived in Pendleton for 8 years out of high school and like anyone living somewhere for 8 years met a good many folks and have life long friends from those times. One acquaintance I made was a father son log hauling outfit in Milton-Freewater, Oregon and they swore their life on Schaffer's synthetic oil in their log trucks (I know the synthetic vs conventional oil arguments go about like ford, chevy, dodge but just what they shared with me) and changed in 30,000 mile intervals. They sent oil samples out at those intervals and the results that came back surprised me as at the time I used delo 400 in my 7.3 powerstroke.........the sample results they received back on their 30,000 mile oil was cleaner than brand spankin new delo 400 out of the jug! Again there are many factors involved and some questions that I don't k ow the answer to.........I don't know if this was a Schaffer's test facility that had these facts and maybe exaggerated a bit in favor of their products, I would assume these guys I know are a bit biased towards their oil brand of choice and also being happy with said product and like to spread the word. I also don't know the cost difference in heavy duty Schaffer's oil vs Delo 400 but I like the thought of extended oil changes that come with synthetic oils it just hasn't enticed me enough to research it and make the change if it's worth changing. I know a few people who have switched in their diesel pickups and those two log haulers are the only heavy duty synthetic users, but all have been more than satisfied with the switch to synthetics. But a guy like yourself is looking at several hundred gallons to change over, and I dont know how compatible the old engines and gaskets are with a synthetic oil either. I do know delo works and I've had good luck with it, so I guess it could be an '"if it ain't broke don't fix it'" type thing lol. Have a good one Jefferson, I enjoy all the content and variety you share with us pard.........enjoy that desert while the job lasts
Have to comment also on the very nice job of spreading cinders with a rock truck. I'll bet it didn't go quite that well on the first pass, but they should have it down pretty good after fifteen miles of practice. LOL
LOL mice in your tractor at least it's not bats in your Tower haha love them old school caterpillars lots of folks don't understand about overfueling and the smoke leaving extra s o o t on the liner walls a little bit of Gray with some black don't hurt when it's rolling like a coal driven train and big old pieces coming out of the stack isn't always good
Turbo technology is light years better than it was in the 1960s. You will like that turbo a lot better, i bet even fuel consumption goes down. Need to get a drive pressure reading as well on it though. :-) Having been involved with the testing on the Plus 50II Deere oil I would highly recommend it for your application. We run it 500hr on the new stuff and that is engines running 100%load for 500hrs not a truck engine that gets only run at high loads a small percentage of its run time. Its cheaper too at about$15/gal. and lots cheaper if you buy it in bulk. It is 15w40 oil but I have been running it for years in my old 2cyl Deere diesels and it works great.
Not likely. Some synthetics seem to do that, but most behave very similar to regular oil. That turbo setup should make a lot of difference in that old cat I don't blame you one bit wanting to up your oil usage it all about saving money and parts. Keep up the great video's
Ever use one of them oil centrifuges? One was on the last used road tractor i bought, it was a Conway Truck. Made by Spinner II, it does seem to collect the carbon and keep the oil cleaner longer.
How do you think the switch blade turbo will increase efficiency and power on a 1693 not sure if u had one on old Kenny? Hope to see that truck back together and I am watching every video! I bleed yellow also!!
Nice work, Jeff. Are these turbo R & R's getting any easier with practice? You mentioned smoke; smoke is also unburned fuel (= $ up the exhaust pipe). Noticed a good bit of turbo lag. Is it the result of an engine that just runs very slow? Does it even matter on a dozer? Keep up the good work, and glad to see that it's stopped snowing up there.

Jeff the Rotella T6 oil is far superior to the mobile Delo 400 it's fully synthetic 15 40 I run it in everything and I've noticed that my oil takes thousands of miles longer to get black.

1waukesha I hold the compressor wheel with my gloved hand until the oil pressure comes up and then let go.
Gotta be a first, spreading with a Wabco. Not too bad on the brazing!

Good job sir, on the Brazing glad to see another true working Man out fixing and repairing instead of just replacing parts. God bless you Sir
a good monday morning for a change starting out with an excellent video thanks Jeff

Love the new intro and outro. Lots of good info. Nice work
I am all about the least bit of smoke possible, there is nothing like a clean running, Diesel!!!!
AVE swears by the liquid wrench too.
Great work Jeff this is very interesting looking forward to the outcome

“Starlings on the outside, mice on the inside.”
Ha! Sounds like home. Always interesting to see what sort of company I’ll have when I start something up that has been sitting a while.
Another good video.
I set there nests on fire when they build in the scraper apron arm, toasted starlings
Hell, on that weld, grab a rattle can throw a little paint on it and it's good ! 😊
I've seen a lot worse bubblegum weld, as long as it holds up!
Cat sounds good, waiting to see what it does under load.
Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍
Sweet intro, glad you kept it real with the “honkers”…
Nice all the way.. Cinders spreading nicely!!
Huge amounts of smoke is not efficient. I loved the spool down sound. May even bring the fuel efficiency up.
I Ask all!! Of you once again!! Is it Quite clear! Now why I call my buddy the professor of Dirt?? He runs them hard! And fixes! Them! When they need it!! You Rock Boss Man!

Ahhh some sweet music in the end...the Wabco ofcourse!😁
Oops forgot to add that I loved hearing that Detroit coming from behind you as it spread that load. No other engine sounds quite like that.
You new handle: Jeff "Capt. Brazo" Anderson. Good video, that turbo should be great on the old 9.
Another great video I've been flagging around a lot of great Caterpillar equipment Front end loaders,Excavators, and Vibratory rollers. good on yah the sunshine girls are back

I like the idea of that switchblade turbo.
Great video. If the turbo ever fails on my best bud's D7F, the SBT looks like a great replacement. Great intro and thanks for bringin back the GIRLS ! ! ! #jpaydirtrocks
Hell, Jeff, even if you extend the service interval from 250 hours to 300 hours that's an awesome improvement.
Im not sure why this was in my recommended but this was awesome!
Ohhhh... switchblade turbo.... gimme gimme 🤗
love the opening and closing. what else can I say another good video
Good video. Don't worry about the braze, its glued together. Are you digging up dinosaurs on that project? LOL that last clip was great.
Can't wait till you get all the work done on the old girl and see her working with the new turbo.Extendable magnet your best friend at certain times.
...now you need to install a Buick Dynaflow with the switch blade torque converter... ;-)
I need one of these turbos for my civic
Joking, I don't have a civic 😂
this guy is awesome !!!!
Love the sped up parts! Died laughing
Awesome shit, can't wait to see some serious pushing with the tricked out D9, don't forget a nice chrome stack! Ty for sharing
Jeff, if you drop a non-ferrous wrench you can use a non-ferrous magnet to retrieve them.
hmmm
As someone who served his apprenticeship on Diesels ,small and big, I often wonder about the love of smoke by folks. It means you do not have enough air and a diesel belching smoke means something aint right. That dozer with a straight chrome stack would be badass
😎👌👍 That new turbo rocks 🤘, can't wait to see how it runs with a leaner "map".
Spreading with a rock truck. Hilarious! Nice job of it without spreader chains.
Well wait until you see what we can do versus the guys who used dump trucks last year, they were crying for more money because the dust and rocks were wreeking havic on there little dump trucks, plus your really going to get a laugh when you see what we did to make it work LOL
Hey Jeff, I love the videos. I just recently found your channel, subscribed, and have been binge watching your videos. I’m from Alamogordo, NM.
Same thing Ernie Ervin you was one good driver back in day
Hi Jeff great work on you're D9 any news on D9 Mark 2 yet ??? Regards Peter , Kent UK

Great job Jeff!
Add a bypass filter to the system. They supposedly extend gas engine a ridiculous amount and diesel s even more.
Hi mate, watched most of the videos now trying to catch up! Your knowledge is incredible- absolutely fascinating!!! Has it come from years on the tools or were you with Cat as well at some point? Dave
It's amazing that in only 3 months no more payments!!!
Straight 30 in that ? I know the old ones called for it, we had some really old D6s and Detroit 3v generators , I started putting cat 15/40 in them , wow they ran better and we're happier sounding. Before the Detroits leaked like crazy ,that all stopped.
Did you get your dropped wrench? Thanks for the videos.
Less black smoke created means less diesel wasted!
Ok fine rock the cradle time 🇺🇸 lol
Awesome I'm going to do that to my d9 also
That takes me back a few. Miss it
I love these vids! It seems there's nothing you won't take on as a project. Which leads me to a question: Is there certain things that you will not do yourself on your own equipment? I used to take the fuel systems to my dealer, but the guy who worked on them retired so I guess I'll be doing them now
Where can I get one of these turbos at I have a d9 that needs a turbo thanks man your a bad ass! dyeing breed
Blaylock turbochargers in Baxter Springs Kansas
Love your new intro!
I vote T-Rexy for your Mascot! Or an Aussie Drop Bear. lol.
Did you get your spanner out, that you dropped at start of turbo removal ?

synthetic in something that has leaks, is it true that it will run out faster than regular oil?
Jpaydirt probably just as well as regular oil and I do remember now that you say that synthetic oil is a leak finder.
Ugh...should be using Cat Lake Erie high head bolts as those are the best!
Peter kewitt did a job on the Erie canal
I enjoy this tremendously. Not sure why…. Perhaps just watching someone else do it…. Thanks
Nice work Jeff
Have to comment also on the very nice job of spreading cinders with a rock truck. I'll bet it didn't go quite that well on the first pass, but they should have it down pretty good after fifteen miles of practice. LOL
No it didn't, we had to weld some more stuff in to get it right
Definitely looks and sounds like the old d353
Does the D9 have some type of bypass oil filter. I added a diesel craft oil centrifuge to my ford 7.3 and its amazing how clean the oil stays
I got one but it's defective, so it's going back
Great job on the turbo.
lov the sound of CAT!!
I noticed you also have very little smoke from the KW now with that turbo , it runs like a new fuel squezzer rig .
What about a synthetic in an old engine like this? will it leak out faster at the seals that leak now?
Not likely. Some synthetics seem to do that, but most behave very similar to regular oil. If soot is your main oil contaminate then synthetic wouldn't gain you anything as you still have to drain it to remove the contamination. Anyone that tells you synthetic can handle the soot better is blowing smoke, its like water in diesel you have to remove it to avoid damage. Only oil analysis could tell you if the longer life of a synthetic would benefit you or not.
What was the cost to update the turbo (est $$ amount)? Thanks
Keep up the good work, and glad to see that it's stopped snowing up there.
well it was in gear, so you were watching it accelerate under converter stall
as Banks Engineering says, that smoke is incomplete burn so wasted energy.
What do you know about diesels? I mean apprentice, moderate expert, expert....
100% that smoke is essentialy unburned fuel so yea wasted energy and thats why this turbo eliminated half the amount of smoke then it used to produce because its mixing more air with that fuel and burning it better and if he can put it under load turn. The boost up i reckon he could burn some more and again eliminate even more of that smoke i hope i wrote it in away that it makes sense
What camera is that on your hat? pretty good quality for something that compact
Mobius 2
FINALY AFTER LIKE 4 MONTHS
Very cool! 👍
Doesn't the thick black smoke equal unburnt fuel?
yes
Is their a Switch Blade for 5.9 12v? Try Acetone & ATF 50/50 for pen fluid.
Yes, and for a harley or anything else you have a turbo on
Is that D9 your only dozer? I'm a scale modeler and currently building a 1:25 scale D8H replica and looking for decent prototype images. Bing search results are underwhelming at best lol.
Jeff I’m a John Deere oil guy and an Amzoil guy go to Amzoil and extend your entervals I hate changing oil!!
Love me a new rotary muffler!
Nice like you say once you played around with it a bit and start pushing that boost will rise bottle of the Irish 🇮🇪 stuff you will hit 24-27psi
Is there room to add an intercooler with electric fan between the turbo outlet and inlet manifold?
I like it
Jeff the Rotella T6 oil is far superior to the mobile Delo 400 it's fully synthetic 15 40 I run it in everything and I've noticed that my oil takes thousands of miles longer to get black.
