Talk about ringing the bell ! , as they say in the instructions , " some disassembly required" LOL , Love the sound of a DETROIT in that rock truck . That's the problem with the emissions diesels , they all sound the same , no personality !!!! stay safe , bob k
I am an office jock with a interest in all things mechanical. I am amazed at the level of complexity involved with these repairs and the tools required in these repairs. The fact that you guys attack these repairs so nonchalantly is equally amazing. I am enjoying all your vids and look at these vehicles with new eyes and admiration! Regards from Betty's Bay in South Africa.....one of those Shithole countries!
Enjoy your videos, Jeff. I was very impressed with the fellow who welded new metal in concentric rings on the inside of that bearing race, and then bored it down. I think he earned his money.
Pretty nice piece of work, I'd say. By the way, your vids are really very good, and I enjoy your discussions of how you keep the boat afloat up there. Keep up the good work.
You can't beat that amigo!! nuttin better than a familie tree to carry on who we are!! I am dam sho one! cowboyin! truckin! and the love of the big iron! is who I am! as well R.I.P MKC! My grandfather he was a blade man for over 50 years not to mention dozers scrapers! and anything yeller or green or red! and he left me with the love and experience I have today! for the big iron!
Awesome Video, Jeff!! I wish I could be there to help you guys!! Excellent Boring, and welding job!! That new Rock-Truck sure is a runner!! That's sure going to come-in handy for you!! All the very best!! Your friend, Vic!! We'll talk soon, and Please keep those video's coming, I sure enjoy them!!
What a great video with a successful outcome, I'm really pleased for you. When that guy thumped that piece with the sledge the ring made my computer shake momentarialy!
PMSL you could use the sprocket disk as ya dinner bell certainly wake you up in the mornin good to see the old girl running and the old dumper has that got a buzzin dozen in it sounds like it !
+jpaydirt nice we don't get much old kit like that over this side of the pond most stuff once it's bust gets sold off for scrap as it usually works out to expensive to fix up not many motor scrapers left here now they are mostly at power stations feeding coal into them only a few run older type tractors on construction mostly D6 and most of the work is done with excavators and dumpers working on big equipment is a dead trade here only a few old school boys left overhear that can drive or repair it !
You all should have a warning "deafening Gong" in 10 seconds, I had ear plugs, plugged into my tablet, OH MY GOD, that provided the real 3D sound effect! Nice touch to end the video on though...
Well I'm guessing you dont just pop down to "Hebrew Freight" and get yourself the tools needed to do this job! That is some kinda of tools there....Great Video guys!!.
I have the tools for setting the injectors and valve train on that detroit. Along with the repair books for the 71 series. They will never be used here.
+Randy J The other Two trucks have 400 Cummins power, And I just happen to have a 400 laying around so when the buzzin dozen dies I'm sure they will over on my 400
Those D-9 final drives usually give very little trouble. We have owned 6 of them, and never had a problem. I have spare parts here for them if anyone needs them.
My pivot shaft was loose and the bore was cracked bad, I think she was severely abused before I bought her, the frame on the left was broken and patched also, where are you located?
I never heard of a dead axle being loose from the housing being cracked and broken. It must have worked a lot in the rock. I am from Alberta, Canada. We have one D9G left which we are trying to sell. We still have 4 D8Ks and 3 D8Hs and 5 of these D8s are direct drives. We also have a D6D and a D3C. We used the D9s and most of the D8s for pulling scrapers and still would when we get work for them.
Well if they have someone who is either older or has a I can fix anything attitude, then hire them, but you don't have to use a cat dealer, plenty of guys who could do it, and for less money maybe, ask around. here is a guy that can fix anything ruclips.net/channel/UCECYrpFScpIfF7UYgLCPZQw
killer120 your Cat has dry steering clutches if it's a 1955 and the clutch discs seize together. What you can do it get it running, put it in a lower gear and hold both steering clutches back and stick the dozer in the ground. If your Cat stops moving, you have fixed your problem.
hey how hard is it to brake the circle knee on a 1979 12g motor grader I know it's old but that's one thick piece of metal didn't hit anything hard was running one yesterday parked it for a few then I seen it like whoa and Crack was fresh no rust about a inch wide can put thumb in there any ideas...
+gary p where did it break? Knee? the actual circle itself? never seen that, get some thing between the drive gear and circle gear? My 14G broke on the drawbar, I think that was a common spot
+gary p Well it must have suffered a blow at some time, and finally gave out, metal fatigue? some one with expereince could look at the break and tell you what happened, any signs of being cracked earlier? like rust
Would have been nice to had the other side tore down and inspected and possibly redone too....I guessed no since fixing something that doesn't need fixing
Holy Bells from Hell, Batman, that hurt all the way over here ... and hear! I'll try to coax this answer from u, but I know as a dirty greaser fixit man gone dirt pusher, u'll fight the honest answer from coming forth! Ok, here goes: From the initial discovery of that broken bolt, u wanted to get deep inside the Kitty, DIDN'T YOU? Once the initial shock and pain wore off, u felt compelled to go all the way until u hit the bull, and then punched on beyond! U didn't want to stop at a couple missing bolts and some petrified kitty poop oil, because you knew there was more! On to the depths of the bull gear u were thinking. CONFESSIONS? Disclaimer: Some greasin' N machinin' required. Do not attempt at home. No kitties, Cats, or bulls were hurt in the making of this video and one was brought back from Hell. Some hearing was lost during the making of this video.
It all depends on the designed function of the machine. In extreme stress environments for track machines that only push and pull, (bulldozers)the geared drivetrain is the way to go. Other tracked machines such as cranes and excavators can run hydraulic motor driven planetary drive systems but they’re typically not subjected to the shock loads that can wreck a hydraulic system, that bulldozers must endure.
+Anthony Lucibello Well I wish I had turned on the camera, It wasn't to bad we just had to push on and angle at the far right side of the blade to keep it straight while using the left track to move the cat back all the while holding the right steering clutch lever out and keeping the right brake locked so as not to cause any more damage inside, even though it was locked up tighter than a bulls ass, it was all the 88 could do to slide the one side, watch what it does when we pull it off the lowboy, probably should have pulled on the far right hand side, notice even the 37 won't pull it unless the cat is helping
OK... HOW ABOUT ELECTRIC MOTORS? they run trains and trains are 1000 times bigger heavy er and have fine controls [ can start with a creep or a jolt..]
+Stephen Barker On the really big trucks and loaders, they do just that. (Same engine block as a locomotive, too.) Some even collect extra power from overhead wires to give them a power boost going up and down steep hills. Equipment of this vintage tends to be mostly mechanical.
Thanks for filming and showing us the reassembly. It's always great when you know the job's done right no matter what the cost. Have fun
Amazing work. It's so nice to work in a clean room while doing precision welding and boring. It was nice watching. Thanks for telling the story.
Absolutely amazing you guys are talented Machinists and mechanics

+Robert Kavich It rang our bells to LOL
Nice video, the church bell chime of the final drive cover art the end was a sweet sound!

Enjoy your videos, Jeff. I was very impressed with the fellow who welded new metal in concentric rings on the inside of that bearing race, and then bored it down. I think he earned his money.
He's a good friend, he used to work for the dealer he loved machine work and welding, so it was only natural that he left and went on his own,
Pretty nice piece of work, I'd say. By the way, your vids are really very good, and I enjoy your discussions of how you keep the boat afloat up there.
Keep up the good work.
The Wabco made me smile for sure. Quite the truck! And yes they steer sharp!

Heavy, hard work. Hats off to you guys for getting it done. Thanks for the video.
That looked like fun zipping around the lot in the big dump truck, good video.
Love the sound of that Detroit, that dump truck hauls ass.
+Dieselman8v92 Its scary, never driven one, seems like its going to tip over when you steer hard,
What a great video with a successful outcome, I'm really pleased for you.
When that guy thumped that piece with the sledge the ring made my computer shake momentarialy!
+Dan Whiteford Should of been there!
I was watching at double speed thinking "damn that dump truck is fast as hell!"
Luch bell at 9:05 the look on his face....priceless "Just wackit huu? You jerk" is what he was thinking after thinking
Great video. Alot of work to put that thing together.
All joking aside,..I do appreciate the time you took to show us this on video. I know what's involved here to do this and I thank you for this.

That "Radial?" mig welder is pretty awesome. I've never seen one like that.
They call it a bore welder, with some attachments you can weld on a shaft like a trailer spindle
Always enjoy the videos.

Sorry, ☻
Well I'm guessing you dont just pop down to "Hebrew Freight" and get yourself the tools needed to do this job! That is some kinda of tools there....Great Video guys!!.
Is the final drive housing cast steel? I'm amazed that it can be welded like that. I would have thought it was iron and you would be SOL.
Yes it's all cast steel, cat got one thing right ☻
WOWWOWWOW!!!!
You may not be impressed ..... But I was ....
The sledge near woke the house ..... ROFL!
Love that dump truck. Hope to see more vids of it.
+DailyDieselDose You will,
wow... never seen that before... the power of ten thousand suns...

I've got a d9g in Hawaii that needs a final drive. Still have one? Right side. Sept 5, 2018
Sir what a fantastic video or what it takes to fix very big equipement.
Now we know why these machines cost so much money to buy.
+canvids1 lots of stuff inside, true story
Now you need to go find a good ole 245 to pair with that truck!
+tarheellax92 Were thinking a 330
You should get a backhoe for putting those tracks on:) :)
Bells will be ringing!!🤣🤣
Sad christmas songs.......WHAT! SPEAK UP
Another great one !!!!!
You don't patch your stuff you fix like everyone should
Sounds like the Pulse weld process.
forrest gump MIG...
I got a 1955 cat d8, tractor wont turn, I'm thinking the clutches aren't disengaging, do you think cat would send a guy out to fix that?
Well if they have someone who is either older or has a I can fix anything attitude, then hire them, but you don't have to use a cat dealer, plenty of guys who could do it, and for less money maybe, ask around. here is a guy that can fix anything ruclips.net/channel/UCECYrpFScpIfF7UYgLCPZQw

The cat part is called a circle knee it's the two c shaped things that come off the circle that hold the blade ( like that
The knee itself
+gary p Well it must have suffered a blow at some time, and finally gave out, metal fatigue? some one with expereince could look at the break and tell you what happened, any signs of being cracked earlier? like rust
High sprocket crawlers eliminate these issues?
some what, but you pay for it in under carrige wear
Does the truck have a 2 stroke in it?
yep those old detroits do sound mean as hell
Would have been nice to had the other side tore down and inspected and possibly redone too....I guessed no since fixing something that doesn't need fixing
🇧🇷 👍👏👏👏

Y DONT THEY USE HYDURALIC MOTORS INSTEAD OF SO MUCH GEARS?
