    Compost? Sand? Top Soil? Which one? I think they all work for leveling areas in your yard. Just be sure and not go to heavy when using this method and make sure to water it well once you do it.

    I appreciate your videos. All this is new and very interesting to me. I have a front yard full of big oak trees that has been severely neglected for years. I have set out on a quest to try and get it as nice as I possibly can. I purchased a bunch of seed and steel racked all the bare spots and threw those down a few weeks back. So far so good. Hopefully in a year or so i will have a nice front yard.

    • @loslewis950
      @loslewis950 4 года назад +1

      @@travisedwards9983 According to the Institute of Food and Agriculture at the University of Florida, top dressing home lawns with sand is more harmful than helpful. Experts agree that sand should only be used on a lawn to level low areas, cover exposed tree roots and to fix heavy thatch build up. Even in those cases, it is recommended that you top dress with a rich, fine compost instead of sand. Sand particles cannot retain any nutrients, so applying a layer of sand year after year to lawns actually causes lawns to lose their fertility. Golf courses are built on sandy soil and specialized turf grasses that can thrive in sandy conditions are used on the greens. The grass seed or sod that most people have in their lawn is not the same as the grass on golf courses.

    I think the poa I get enters via fall season wind storms. You had hurricane weather. Then again, notice how your poa was in widely, but evenly spaced single "plugs". Hmmmm, that makes me think it was "other crop" in your seed. And it did seem to be more in that lower end area of yours, might have been in one or two varieties more than others.

    Interested to see how this turns out as I live in VA and am somewhat interested in a monostand bluegrass. I hope that Black Kow didn't have too many pieces of mulch/wood fibers. Maybe the soil just wasn't broken up, but it did look like some sticks/mulch in there. That could be a problem for a reel mower.
    Any idea whether Peet Moss would work better? 1cuft of Black Kow is $5 in my area but 3cuyd feet of compressed Peet Moss is $12. I guess altering the pH is a consideration.

    Pete, what are your thoughts about using a lawn leveling rake instead. That tool is a little larger than your garden rake or broom so it helps to make sure the lawn is being leveled properly while working the material down through the grass. It's a lot of manual labor whatever tool you choose to use, but it should be "butter smooth" and level when you are done.
    Also, I understand why not to use sand because when you are done the sand will not hold any nutrients to improve the soil. Therefore, would a top soil and compost mixture be the best choice or should I go with only compost as you did?

  • @nancybrennan5536
    @nancybrennan5536 3 года назад

    I get premium bagged top soil and compost here on Long Island, mostly the top of the line Scott's Hampton Estates. However I find a lot of bits and pieces of twigs and clumps in it, even little pebbles, so I have been straining ( sifting) it myself. You should see how much is left in the sifter and I pretty much press and rub it hard.
    Do you think I should forget about straining and allow all those particles to go on my lawn? If I find Black Cow around I may try that if you say it's well strained.
    Also, I get poa annua as well, and used to much more but have been putting down a pre-emergent weed killer in the fall. Now 3 years later after doing this, if I find 5 clumps or so of poa in the spring, it's a lot. I want your readers to know that this is an excellent way to stop poa since its seeds set and overwinter which is why it appears so early in the spring.

    I commend you for trying a plot of bluegrass.
    I've had a soil test and looking good, except my PH is severely alkaline (7.2-8.4) throughout my fescue lawn. I've been adding citric acid to my watering at a rate of 1lb/1000sqft. Its dropped my ph about half a point all around over 5 weeks.
    Do you have any tips for assisting a ph drop in this North Carolina (Raleigh) clay? My soil is already rich of sulfur, and relatively balanced. I think my only options without altering much of the soil chemistry are humic and citric acid?
    Thanks!
