Daniel - I am a keen amateur gardener but a lawn ignoramus. Just come across your lawn vids in last few weeks and your amazing clarity and enthusiasm has inspired me to come out of my perennial borders and hit the green stuff. Just done mY first scarify on my 30 yr old lawn - amazing - bingo wings now in tatters.
I've watched this a few time now and took the plunge and just done my lawn with Jack's magic. It started raining minutes after I finished raking it over which was a bonus too! 2 days after and its amazing how the original grass is coming though nicely already. Just got to keep watering over the next few weeks :) Happy days :)
Dan, one other question. I have the Bosch AVR 1100 Verticutter, which has flails rather than a fixed blade. Would this work for cutting the grooves or would it just be best to hire one from my local centre for half a day? The veryicutter is brilliant at churning up the moss and dead matter, but not sure it will cut consistent grooves like I see your machine do.
So Dan, Inspired by your videos and living too far away from Bolton for your help I decided to do a full revamp of my front lawn. Crazy moss infestation. So bought a back pack sprayer and borrowed my dads electric scarifyer (not as good as your petrol one). I sprayed on some iron sulphate and killed the moss, Scarified the hell out of it , sprayed down some wetting agent (that id never even heard of before your vids. Overseeded and spread 7 bags of jacks magic. WOW its looking better than ever. I dont have a cylinder mower and I might invest. Thank you so much mate. The fact that you do this without crazy expensive tools and stuff made me have a go. I have a bigger back garden and that is next. Thats a bigger project cas the soil need a full revamp and level. But thanks Dan. Keep the vids coming. Love them. Greg Liverpool UK.

Brilliant vid as always. Mowing my lawn is like trying to mow the surface of the moon so topdressing is a must. The bags of Jacks magic look a fair bit bigger than the ones I’ve seen, so I hope the ones I buy cover the same area. You’ve solved my topdressing questions. Thank you. I’m off to buy a landscaping rake now. 👍👍👍
Cheers Danny, still using the Barrenbrug you got for me for overseeding. Another great video and tutorial Dan, thanks for your input and showing us how to do it, I've invested in a new mower, a petrol scarifier, back pack sprayer and the landscaping rake for mine. Waiting for the temps to stabilise first then my lawn is having a crew cut!
Daniel, when adding the compost (is that what ‘top dressing’ is?) with a rake are you not in danger of moving the seed around too much and getting uneven seed coverage? And is it possible to do this wuicker with a soil roller or do they not work well?
Up to now I have raked the lawn to scarify it, only the areas that look rough. Don't shout at me for not doing it all. Do you think the electric ones are work it to make the job easier. Saw one in Screwfix so wondered what you think. Lawns normally take 3 days to mow using sit on and petrol mowers. Love the videos and have subscribed to the channel.
Glad you like it, its a compost brand over here, very high in peat and hardly any rubbish in it, unfortunately peat is being banned in the uk from 2024 !
Your video's and advice has given me confidence to tackle my own lawn. I bought the exact same landscaping rake from Screwfix and I think its great. I'm not worried about the width because it was great for levelling out. I scalped with my mower on the number 1 setting, scarified deeply and picked up the dead grasses. I bought a tonne bag of 70:30 Rolawn topdressing, which is good stuff. When I was spreading the seed however, I calculated the size of the garden (70m2) and at 35g /m measured out 2.5kg of grass seed and using the rotary spreader set it to 24. After more than 6 multiple passes, I decided I had already had put down enough seed, having eyeballed it but I have only used about half the amount of seed! Did I mess up??????
Only time will tell but if you was going on at 35 but didnt put 35 down as you had leftovers then you are putting less down but if theres an existing lawn to come through you should be fine
Great to have found your blog Daniel! My lawn was in a bad state the day we moved into this bungalow, I seeded it 4 years ago and it was doing fine, but now it is starting to produce moss and some bare patches! I have the equipment to carry out what you have shown us viewers, so I will crack on with it this week end! I life in Scotland, so should I wait till the month of May when frost is dormant? I have not seen any Jacks magic or rise and shine at our garden centre, so would seedling compost do? Many thanks!

It clogs up so never used it since i first used those machines in 2003, number doesnt count really as wheels are worn and blades are worn so im on like 4-5 but if i put new blades on i would scarify in neutral as that goes deep enough
Hello Daniel, when you are raking compost after seeding, do the seeds stay in place? Im thinking of laying compost first then overseeding because of that issue with your technique.
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I did not but I will 😉 I will use your technique this Sunday but hope my soil will be a bit dryer to prevent making lumps or sticking seeds under my feet.... Since you are in England, do you often make renovation on wet soil ? Greetings from France

I had just joined the dirty finger nail club and now you have again showed me a better way of spreading my Jacks magic ! I have 2.5 bags remaining of the original mix but for the future I need to know what is the best alternative,
Dont start wi that, its bull that youve been watching other lawn channels and been taken in by them then asking me like I’m somehow below them, well im above them so you should be asking them why they need to be using one when i am not 🤪

Daniel , I wonder if I could get away with this on the top floor of the larkmead estate? Failing this I’ll move to the jasmine allen. Both are in the canley district.
Interesting video Dan. I have a problem with animals (squirrels, badger, cats) digging holes in my lawn. Is there anything that can be done to deter them (sharp sand dressing?).
You can but you cant level with compost so you would still have abumpy lawn, if its really bumpy then id always start again but its your budget so weather it permits is another matter
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert thanks for the reply. The lawn is never going to be perfect, we have dogs and kids 😂. Just looking to make some cosmetic improvements. I was thinking starting again would be the case but it would be a waste of time, I would only end up with the same pee holes in it. Is there a way to level out without starting again? Thanks Daniel Regards
Great video. How do you deal with worm casts creating bumps and divots in the lawn? We relaid our entire lawn from bare soil to seed and when it was done it was nice and smooth. It now feels like the surface of the moon when pushing the mower over.
Hi Dan. Are you seeding this month? I was always led to believe that you shouldn't seed until the last frost is somewhat unlikely to occur. I'm looking at the UK forecast and night time temps are near/below 0°C.
I'm confused.! I started doing a little research because I need to over seed my lawn. I stumbled across your videos and watched your latest (at the time) when you used bathgate top dressing, but in the latest you used jacks magic, which product is best suited for which type of application/result
Use your top dressing for levelling out any lumps and bumps, but if you're just looking to get the seed growing and not do much in the way of levelling, use a bag of jacks 😀
I've noticed that you use "Old trusty" for scarifying rather than the Allett cassette.. any reasons why please? Being tempted by an Allett with mowing and two other cassettes ..Already have an 'Old trusty scarifier, so don't want to duplicate or blow money on unnecessary kit. New trousers Grommit.. looking great!
First renovations of the year have to be done with the blades of the scarifier to get into the soil profile ideally , the tines on a scarifier arnt strong enough to penetrate
Dan, what might I charge for doing that lawn? I’m finding it very hard to know what to charge here in Ireland. Thanks for sharing that video as it really helps me..
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert Dan, thanks for replying to me and I’m very aware how sensitive this is..the lawn you did on the video today and what roughly I might charge for such a lawn..kill moss, kill weeds, scalp, scarify, aerate, fertilise ,over-seed, top dressing, (roll?), and mow at 3 inches..you can e mail me if you like…Many thanks .Francis

It clogs up so never used it since i first used those machines in 2003, number doesnt count really as wheels are worn and blades are worn so im on like 4-5 but if i put new blades on i would scarify in neutral as that goes deep enough
What's the best way to water if not a sprinkler Dan?
With a hose and the yellow end hozelock attachment by hand
Gota love a good scalping 👍
Hello Daniel, when you are raking compost after seeding, do the seeds stay in place? Im thinking of laying compost first then overseeding because of that issue with your technique.
Yeah course did you not watch the videos later in the year?
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I did not but I will 😉 I will use your technique this Sunday but hope my soil will be a bit dryer to prevent making lumps or sticking seeds under my feet.... Since you are in England, do you often make renovation on wet soil ? Greetings from France
@@bastien1624 always on wet, doing a video at the min just scarified today, seeding and top dressing tomorrow so hopefully will
Upload tomorrow too
Fantastic video as always, keep up the great work. What grass seed do you use?
Barenbrug extreme available in my ebay shop
Hi been watching your videos and are great but struggling to get the original jacks magic can only seem to find the new 50/50 blend is that any good???
Nope dont touch it
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert cheers is there any other product you can recommend for over seeding existing lawns
@@daveoldham3912 watch my videos like you say you are and you will find the answer
I had just joined the dirty finger nail club and now you have again showed me a better way of spreading my Jacks magic ! I have 2.5 bags remaining of the original mix but for the future I need to know what is the best alternative,
I am unsure of that yet
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I remember seeing on one of your videos an alternative you were trying for JM? Couldn't re-find it, so did it work out?
@@nigelbrownless it did very much so just not had chance to do the editing of the vid yet
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert Looking forward to it. What was the product called?
You do not use a lawn roller to ensure the best seed contact with soil?
Dont start wi that, its bull that youve been watching other lawn channels and been taken in by them then asking me like I’m somehow below them, well im above them so you should be asking them why they need to be using one when i am not 🤪
Hi Dan I've got a large lawn with loads of dock weeds all over, is there a solution for that?
Yes lawn weedkiller
Daft question. Why don’t you use a lanzie to top-dress the lawn?
Because its 400 quid i wouldnt get back, a pain to store and it doesnt gove you coverage where the bars are laterally, at no point today whilst doing that job did the lanzie enter my head
What is the main seed variety you use? It looks high in creeping variety’s is this right?
No not at all its dwarf rye has zero creeping qualities
what type of grass seed do you recommend to use?
Barenbrug extreme in my ebay shop
Daniel , I wonder if I could get away with this on the top floor of the larkmead estate?
Failing this I’ll move to the jasmine allen.
Both are in the canley district.
Great Video Daniel. We tend to use Rootzone to top dress here in glasgow as the soil is pretty thick with clay. Do you have an opinion on that? Cheers
Guess compost would hold even more water
Can I do this in Scotland during July?
Yes aslong as your willing to water
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert thanks for the speedy reply Daniel, keep up the great work teaching us how to achieve a good lawn.
Put the bag of compost through a garden sieve to get the lumpy bits out
Interesting video Dan. I have a problem with animals (squirrels, badger, cats) digging holes in my lawn. Is there anything that can be done to deter them (sharp sand dressing?).
Nothing mate have horrendous issues with squirrals myself
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert - Okay, thanks.
Can I do this with a bumpy new build lawn or am I best to level off and start again?
You can but you cant level with compost so you would still have abumpy lawn, if its really bumpy then id always start again but its your budget so weather it permits is another matter
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert thanks for the reply. The lawn is never going to be perfect, we have dogs and kids 😂. Just looking to make some cosmetic improvements. I was thinking starting again would be the case but it would be a waste of time, I would only end up with the same pee holes in it.
Is there a way to level out without starting again?
Thanks Daniel
Regards
Great video. How do you deal with worm casts creating bumps and divots in the lawn? We relaid our entire lawn from bare soil to seed and when it was done it was nice and smooth. It now feels like the surface of the moon when pushing the mower over.
Scarifying tends to drive through those n flattens um out then over seed top dress, one of my upcoming vids will be a lawn like this
Hi Dan. Are you seeding this month? I was always led to believe that you shouldn't seed until the last frost is somewhat unlikely to occur. I'm looking at the UK forecast and night time temps are near/below 0°C.
Well i have here
Can u put fertiliser on artificial grass to make it greener does it work
I'm confused.!
What just todays work?
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert Dan, thanks for replying to me and I’m very aware how sensitive this is..the lawn you did on the video today and what roughly I might charge for such a lawn..kill moss, kill weeds, scalp, scarify, aerate, fertilise ,over-seed, top dressing, (roll?), and mow at 3 inches..you can e mail me if you like…Many thanks .Francis
@@murtaghslawncare. its all size related so difficult to say plus my works carries a premium so im probably more expensive,
If your using machinery etc then you’ve got to include this in your rates, today i will prob charge 120 quid plus materials
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert fair play to you Dan, I’m doing my first lawn today as and I’m really excited and confident I can do it which is amazing. No small way thanks to you.
What height would you say is best to cut a lawn
All different grasses need diff heights so hard one to answer but between25-30 is general
I don’t really understand why the need for such drastic scalping of the lawn. Is a spongy lawn not a good idea?
I laid a lawn last summer but it has sunk in areas should I tear it up and prep better with soil sand and composts or try fix it? Lawn was £130 in turf so not mega money.
Depends how badly you want it more level
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert i did a brick on edge detail around my paths and the grass has sunk maybe an inch, really does irritate me
@@damo8754 did you rotavate?
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert no i did the garden design at home and imported the soil in which is 130mm- 150mm in areas. Its sat on hard-core as a sub base so I maybe should have put some land drains in maybe.
@@damo8754 the soil must of washed through the hardcore
Is there anyway to get a little agitation like that without a scarrifier
Springtine rake?
loving the videos!, its inspired me to start my lawn renovations this year, just taken delivery of a petrol scarrifier, the amount that it takes out is crazy! (never been done before) however quick question do you have any seed you would recommend? as im sure it will need it, it was mainly moss! large lawns so open and not in shade etc doesn’t have any traffic as no kids/pets. Cheers.
I use barenbrug extreme available in my ebay shop
Any Grass Seed will do better with the cheapest as the birds will eat 40% cut low enough and rake before seeding better to poke holes with a garden folk in the rough areas mother nature will do the rest 😉👍
Hi Dan, I stupidly bought a new build and got a clay based lawn, would you use sand or compost to level? It’s currently flooded in Manchester looking at it! 😔
Sounds like you need to put some drains in first to alleviate the problem
height setting on the Allett?? 1, or even lower?
It was short didnt look tbh
you put the seed down and then put the topdressing and then raked it around? Doesn't that disrupt the distribution of the seed?
No its ok
can you mix the compost with soil like a 50/50 mix.
Why wud u want to?
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert well i do have some low spots (someone ran a car up into my front lawn sometime over the winter and now the grass has a long depressed run in it. i did not just want to fill with soil only or compost only. i just thought a mix would be better to fill the deeper depression yet give the seed a healthy enviroment to grow.
@@pdureska7814 never use compost to raise levels as it wont happen
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert ok thank you. so i can raise the level with topsoil and perhaps use the compost as a topdressing for the seeding? correct?
