Great to hear a real professional talk so simply about his process 😊great job
I've watched this a few time now and took the plunge and just done my lawn with Jack's magic. It started raining minutes after I finished raking it over which was a bonus too! 2 days after and its amazing how the original grass is coming though nicely already. Just got to keep watering over the next few weeks :) Happy days :)
I also used Jack's Magic and my front lawn in now full of small white stones, absolute mess and I'm gutted.. not what I expected
Daniel - I am a keen amateur gardener but a lawn ignoramus. Just come across your lawn vids in last few weeks and your amazing clarity and enthusiasm has inspired me to come out of my perennial borders and hit the green stuff.
I’m buying Scott’s rotary spreaders, iron sulphate and scarifiers like a man possessed
Thanks for doing what you do and educating flower junkies like me.
Just done mY first scarify on my 30 yr old lawn - amazing - bingo wings now in tatters.
By far you are my fave lawncare channel, and I have learned lots from watching your channel. Lifelong subscriber here 🙋🏻♂️👌🏻
Dan, one other question. I have the Bosch AVR 1100 Verticutter, which has flails rather than a fixed blade. Would this work for cutting the grooves or would it just be best to hire one from my local centre for half a day? The veryicutter is brilliant at churning up the moss and dead matter, but not sure it will cut consistent grooves like I see your machine do.
Very helpful thank you. Can you do a video on levelling a bumpy lawn, what soil product to use, etc? Thanks
A brilliant couple of videos Dan.
I’m on holiday in Florida and I’m laying on the sofa watching DH lawn expert! This is the power you have over us 😂
can’t wait to get home and start the spring lawn renovation… keep up the good work mate.
Must be bored lol
Quality of the videos / sound so much better this year, must take a lot of effort so cheers Dan - subs are going to rocket!!
You've given me the confidence to beat the shit out of my lawn so I can overseed and make it more uniform looking for the long term! 🙂
Now this is scary. I never searched for anything related to lawns or grass but I just bought some new seeds to fix a few holes. How did the algorithm know this :D Nice video, cheers!
So Dan, Inspired by your videos and living too far away from Bolton for your help I decided to do a full revamp of my front lawn. Crazy moss infestation. So bought a back pack sprayer and borrowed my dads electric scarifyer (not as good as your petrol one). I sprayed on some iron sulphate and killed the moss, Scarified the hell out of it , sprayed down some wetting agent (that id never even heard of before your vids. Overseeded and spread 7 bags of jacks magic. WOW its looking better than ever. I dont have a cylinder mower and I might invest. Thank you so much mate. The fact that you do this without crazy expensive tools and stuff made me have a go. I have a bigger back garden and that is next. Thats a bigger project cas the soil need a full revamp and level. But thanks Dan. Keep the vids coming. Love them. Greg Liverpool UK.
I’ve only just found your channel, loads of helpful advice and all delivered in a relaxed manner. Top work young man. Thank you 🙏.
i just discovered your channel. it,s brilliant.
you have way to little followers.
i will try to promote it on other grass channels.
you deserve much more recognition for youre free tips and great knowledge.
Great stuff thank you!! I agree
Cheers gonna get me back mossy lawn sorted.
I thought to scarify again turned out to be the right decision. Looking forward to my own over seeding in a few weeks once I have applied iron to control moss
Great video .... I like the way you edited out the bit where the owner came running out shouting "What the hell have you done to my lawn?" .... lol .... only kidding ... you definitely know what you're doing.
Now I can see why your lawn always looks amazing. You work on it like a fine chef working in a fancy restaurant lol 👍💚🦸
Brilliant vid as always. Mowing my lawn is like trying to mow the surface of the moon so topdressing is a must. The bags of Jacks magic look a fair bit bigger than the ones I’ve seen, so I hope the ones I buy cover the same area.
You’ve solved my topdressing questions. Thank you. I’m off to buy a landscaping rake now. 👍👍👍
Great video Daniel . I use a “Landzie’ to put on the Jacks magic and that gives about 15m2 per bag.
Cheers Danny, still using the Barrenbrug you got for me for overseeding. My lawn gets better and better each year thanks to your advice, can’t believe how good it looked in March, just done the treatment you lay down in this vid last weekend and looking forward to the results. Luvvin’ the I told you so remark and how you deal with comments from people trying to give YOU advice!!! 😂
Yep no nonsense here, people have no right to ask “is the music necessary” and expect me to just be nice, they will get a mouthful,
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert yes, you must get fed up with it. I guess trolling good people is easier than starting their own channel, not that they could with the absence of any useful knowledge
@@PJ-jg9bq exactly i started my channel so i could do exactly what i wanted
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I love the music, as well as being informative it's relaxing listening to the music and watching the QuickTime of the job.
People actually moan about your videos? 😂 what’s there to moan about when it’s good advice and we get a mint lawn. I get ocd watching your videos at 3am 😂
Legend! Glad to see the channel growing 👏
Another great video and tutorial Dan, thanks for your input and showing us how to do it, I've invested in a new mower, a petrol scarifier, back pack sprayer and the landscaping rake for mine. Waiting for the temps to stabilise first then my lawn is having a crew cut!
Yeah thats the best thing you will do this year if you want that extra fine look look later on in the year,
Hi Danny love watching your videos regularly and learning from your lawn treatments and your knowledge excellent video
Compost always, I’ve got clay soil, so I dethatch, scarify, spread gypsum and then roll on at least 1/4” of organic compost.
Another cracking video. Thanks for all of your efforts.👍🏻
Great video and advice Thank you!
Just done this today.
I had a 80 ltr bag of jacks and got 15m2 out of it.
I will water now and wait for results, over the next few weeks.
Just heard we could be getting SNOW.....
Oh Bugger!
I'll get me coat...
Nice work again!!! On the rake it is a beauty and it's size helps to keep things level. If you need a smaller one get that ones smaller brother!
Your video's and advice has given me confidence to tackle my own lawn. I bought the exact same landscaping rake from Screwfix and I think its great. I'm not worried about the width because it was great for levelling out. I scalped with my mower on the number 1 setting, scarified deeply and picked up the dead grasses. I bought a tonne bag of 70:30 Rolawn topdressing, which is good stuff. When I was spreading the seed however, I calculated the size of the garden (70m2) and at 35g /m measured out 2.5kg of grass seed and using the rotary spreader set it to 24. After more than 6 multiple passes, I decided I had already had put down enough seed, having eyeballed it but I have only used about half the amount of seed! Did I mess up??????
Only time will tell but if you was going on at 35 but didnt put 35 down as you had leftovers then you are putting less down but if theres an existing lawn to come through you should be fine
New trousers.. yay
Great job. Looking forward to doing mine this weekend. 👍
Did you do it?
@@crimsonpirate1710 yes. Best lawn in the neighbourhood so I’m told. 👍👍👍
Another brilliant video Daniel 👍🏻 Getting warmer next week
Another great video 👏
New to the channel. Great information.
I’d love to see some pics of these lawns a few weeks later to really show the before/after results.
You will
Might want to run that fork under the cold tap before you have your prawn cocktail!
Cool intro Dan!
Btw what is jacks magic?
Glad you like it, its a compost brand over here, very high in peat and hardly any rubbish in it, unfortunately peat is being banned in the uk from 2024 !
@DanielHibbertLawnExpert why is it being banned?
Big up Ben! Locked
Gota love a good scalping 👍
Put the bag of compost through a garden sieve to get the lumpy bits out
I've been watching your vids for over a year now and I'm very impressed, great advice, well done and keep it going. One question how soon after sowing seed (overseeding) can you use a granular feed? Some of the instructions say 8 weeks. I put some Stella Bio Boost down but I think the existing lawn needs a bit more. or should put some Galactic Green down instead? Cheers
Nice one Daniel.
Hi Dan I've got the same rake and found the 600mm version you can buy online for £30 odd quid might suit you better without ruining the big one
Hi chap , could I ask where you found the 600mm version . Many thanks
@@leefenton9477 toolden
Great job veolia sell 10 mm green waste compost for £15 a ton
Great to have found your blog Daniel! My lawn was in a bad state the day we moved into this bungalow, I seeded it 4 years ago and it was doing fine, but now it is starting to produce moss and some bare patches! I have the equipment to carry out what you have shown us viewers, so I will crack on with it this week end! I life in Scotland, so should I wait till the month of May when frost is dormant? I have not seen any Jacks magic or rise and shine at our garden centre, so would seedling compost do? Many thanks!
Can only get my products on ebay, i use field compost no 4 now,
Up to now I have raked the lawn to scarify it, only the areas that look rough. Don't shout at me for not doing it all. Do you think the electric ones are work it to make the job easier. Saw one in Screwfix so wondered what you think. Lawns normally take 3 days to mow using sit on and petrol mowers. Love the videos and have subscribed to the channel.
Love your videos....I would appreciate it if possible to show (before you start the procedure ) the underneath of the machine that you will use. I dont know the difference between a scarifer or dethatcher and the terminology of the cylinder unit......thanks in advance
I show that in the video with the thumbnail which sats get back inside on it, check it out it was only 2 vids ago, but next time will try n remember
What type of grass is on this lawn? Looks like carpet it's great!
Looks Brill , well done. BUT it's not a poor man's lawn is it. Dread to think how much all the compost, treatments and equipment costs throughout the year..
Its all relative if the lawn was 20m2 then it costs less, i do videos to suit all kinds of peoples ideals
Daft question. Why don’t you use a lanzie to top-dress the lawn?
Because its 400 quid i wouldnt get back, a pain to store and it doesnt gove you coverage where the bars are laterally, at no point today whilst doing that job did the lanzie enter my head
Should you weed and feed before scriafying
Another helpful video, many thanks. When you are spreading the compost after the seeds, how do you avoid moving all the seeds around?
Your not making contact with the seed the compost is very light and floats over the top and the seed falls in the grooves and has buffer zones created by the original grass, if it was a soil base n job then yes it may move but on this job no issues
Hi Daniel. love watching the videos as i have this year got into doing my lawn/ grass. I would like to know what the best soil or sand or a mixture to use to level out the humps and bumps, and when best to do it? Appreciate the help. Mike
Difficult to answer as so many companies out there doing supplies of quality i do not know! Inturf do a good rootzone but it like 100 per tn bag
I don’t really understand why the need for such drastic scalping of the lawn. Is a spongy lawn not a good idea?
Another great video!!! Before I found your videos I followed a few others but now just you, very informative and on a level that a novice like myself can learn from. I will be seeding v soon, my lawn is a bit unlevel in places, do I seed and use jacks magic or use another product after seeding? Or sort the levels out later this n the year then atleast I have a nice lawn to admire as it’s looking no so good at the mo.
Thanks
You cant use compost for levels so you would need more a sand based product but if its over a few cms you cant really smother the lawn and hope the lawn underneath comes through you would need to backfill by removing the turf then lifting the level that way
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert perfect, thanks!
Daniel, when adding the compost (is that what ‘top dressing’ is?) with a rake are you not in danger of moving the seed around too much and getting uneven seed coverage? And is it possible to do this wuicker with a soil roller or do they not work well?
@@HarrisonBrown88 no look at the lawn on my last video
👏👏👏 love a told ya so 🤠
I had just joined the dirty finger nail club and now you have again showed me a better way of spreading my Jacks magic ! I have 2.5 bags remaining of the original mix but for the future I need to know what is the best alternative,
I am unsure of that yet
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert I remember seeing on one of your videos an alternative you were trying for JM? Couldn't re-find it, so did it work out?
@@nigelbrownless it did very much so just not had chance to do the editing of the vid yet
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert Looking forward to it. What was the product called?
Hi what’s The fertiliser called all the top dressing cheers👍👍
Just fyi the cut in the opening shot shows and uneven mowing deck. Need adjustment.. 🙂
New to this but these are brilliant tutorials. Would there be any chance of saying what time of year you carry out the procedures (just learning) thanks
Anytime of year march -september
How can i sow grass seed over plastic grass grids? Thanks
great, but when do we use a roller on the lawn???
You dont
Jack's magic is 90% peat - would be much better to use an environmentally friendly peat-free alternative.
Do you drive an electric car?
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert yea actually i do
@@sambarker1245 and is the energy used to charge 100% from renewable sources? Do you use gas in your house?
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert So it's clearly not possible to live a normal life without using non-renewable resourses, I wouldn't claim otherwise. It is however possible to switch to peat-free composts which are comparible in nutrients and texture, but dont contribute to destruction of peat bogs which are important carbon stores, and very important ecosystems for biodiversity.
@@sambarker1245 no no when you live a totally renewable life then come at me with hypocritical comments, change your electric supply to dale vince’s company they are 100% renewable so you can switch too, peat is totally organic im growing grass with it which absorbs the co2 for many many years to come, the co2 figures released on peat are when its burnt not when its dug out the ground
Thanks Daniel. I'm looking after the garden at Dinton Castle in Bucks, was a Grand Designs project so the pressure's on! 2 months ago I returfed a 100m square area under a big oak tree. I've watered daily and it grew really well for first 6 weeks but now thinning out. Do you suggest cutting the new turf short and topdressing and over-seeding the area like you did in this video? Unfortunately the area is in shade most of the day, that's probably why it's thinning. Thanks so much if you can help :-)
Fantastic video as always, keep up the great work. What grass seed do you use?
Barenbrug extreme available in my ebay shop
Dan what seed do you use for a nice lawn?
Hi Daniel. Hope you don't mind me asking but I've got a load of clover in my lawn what's the best way to treat it please. 👍
Any lawn weedkiller will see that off so weedol for lawns, vitax weedkiller for lawns or roundup for lawns all getable from the garden centre
Like a chef that says a dash of wine then pours in half the bottle
I've noticed that you use "Old trusty" for scarifying rather than the Allett cassette.. any reasons why please? Being tempted by an Allett with mowing and two other cassettes ..Already have an 'Old trusty scarifier, so don't want to duplicate or blow money on unnecessary kit. New trousers Grommit.. looking great!
First renovations of the year have to be done with the blades of the scarifier to get into the soil profile ideally , the tines on a scarifier arnt strong enough to penetrate
Daniel , have you ever come across bulges appearing in the lawn. I have lived in my house 15 years and never had them before ,this year numerous plate size bulges 25 to 50mm high have appeared.
Sometimes heavy rain can change the landscape
Where did you buy the rake?
If someone bought you a landzie compost spreader free of charge, would you use it???
Nope definately not what do i need a landzie for? They are in essence a rolling sieve, field compost no 4 would just fall through the gap, i am my own channel and i dont use stuff that i dont need and wont get one free just to promote it, if i dont believe in it i dont do it, ive been asked to review that white robotic mower, rainpoint water timer stuff turned it all down as im noones bitch

Fair enough. Loving the honesty.
After my eBay rollocking. I’m following your vid’s to the t now!
Just curious about a few bits that’s all!
Biggest problem that I have run into over the last 3 days is a nice little mole!
loving the videos!, its inspired me to start my lawn renovations this year, just taken delivery of a petrol scarrifier, the amount that it takes out is crazy! (never been done before) however quick question do you have any seed you would recommend? as im sure it will need it, it was mainly moss! large lawns so open and not in shade etc doesn’t have any traffic as no kids/pets. Cheers.
I use barenbrug extreme available in my ebay shop
Any Grass Seed will do better with the cheapest as the birds will eat 40% cut low enough and rake before seeding better to poke holes with a garden folk in the rough areas mother nature will do the rest 😉👍
So what is the purpose of the top dressing? To cover the seed?
Yes also increase soil life to get more out of what you put on
How many bags would be needed for about 80sq metre garden. Was teying to judge from the video, but ive no idea.
Looked great and look forward to seeing the outcome
Turn your sound on you might just hear the answer !
@@garyhillsdon4093 ive clearly missed it when watching.
For anyone else who may have missed it the lawn is 100sq metres and he used ten bags
ive just done half my lawn i top dress the seed with miracle gro all purpose compost and the stuff is really lumpy with hair and stones in, trying to rake it like you do just pulls half the seed with it, my lawn is very bare in patches due to heavy moss infestation that i scarified. ill be buying some other compost for the rest, i suggest people not to buy that shit i used
You do not use a lawn roller to ensure the best seed contact with soil?
Dont start wi that, its bull that youve been watching other lawn channels and been taken in by them then asking me like I’m somehow below them, well im above them so you should be asking them why they need to be using one when i am not 🤪
Great video. How do you deal with worm casts creating bumps and divots in the lawn? We relaid our entire lawn from bare soil to seed and when it was done it was nice and smooth. It now feels like the surface of the moon when pushing the mower over.
Scarifying tends to drive through those n flattens um out then over seed top dress, one of my upcoming vids will be a lawn like this
looks like the worst 'before' and 'after' ever 😂 - You obviously know your stuff but I wouldn't have the confidence to do this!
you put the seed down and then put the topdressing and then raked it around? Doesn't that disrupt the distribution of the seed?
No its ok
Can u put fertiliser on artificial grass to make it greener does it work
Great video 👌🏻
"No sprinklers"...will a watering can work that much differently, or is there another method I'm missing?
Just use a hosepipe by hand
@@DanielHibbertLawnExpert old skool. Ta!
Does the raking shift the lawn seed around?
No see videos later in season when lawn looks like a carpet
Whether or not to use a sand mix for top dressing still confuses me. Is it only needed if certain areas need levelling out or if there is an issue with soggy areas of the lawn?
You can only level areas with samd compost is no good for this as rots away
You can only level areas with sand
compost is no good for this as rots away
Daniel when you’re raking do you not move the seed away from where you sowed ?
Nar the compost is very light
Daniel , I wonder if I could get away with this on the top floor of the larkmead estate?
Failing this I’ll move to the jasmine allen.
Both are in the canley district.
What is the main seed variety you use? It looks high in creeping variety’s is this right?
No not at all its dwarf rye has zero creeping qualities
What height would you say is best to cut a lawn
All different grasses need diff heights so hard one to answer but between25-30 is general
Great Video Daniel. We tend to use Rootzone to top dress here in glasgow as the soil is pretty thick with clay. Do you have an opinion on that? Cheers
Guess compost would hold even more water
You reckon compost would be better to topdress a lawn on new-build crappy clay soil?
Prob not as would hold even more water
Hi Dan. Are you seeding this month? I was always led to believe that you shouldn't seed until the last frost is somewhat unlikely to occur. I'm looking at the UK forecast and night time temps are near/below 0°C.
Well i have here
I have a similar scarifier. What number do you use generally and do you go deeper prior to seeding? Why do you not use the grass box? John
It clogs up so never used it since i first used those machines in 2003, number doesnt count really as wheels are worn and blades are worn so im on like 4-5 but if i put new blades on i would scarify in neutral as that goes deep enough
Just one or two or even 10 seeds
Hello Dan, i just found your channel Wow what I saw some plastic down underneath then your sand & organic matter so how does the roots grow deep ? Or not or doesn’t matter ??
Rye isnt a big rooter so no issue
