The Best of MLB's WORST - The Oakland Athletics

- The Oakland Athletics are officially leaving Oakland. But that doesn't mean you can't have fun at Major League Baseball's worst stadium. I went to an A's game to see what it's really like.

It's so tough to swallow this situation. I can remember a full stadium for Raiders games, and the concourse where everybody would be yelling "Raaaaaiders". There was a time the A's games were absolutely packed. You could barely walk down the concourse without having to dodge mobs of fans. This is literally the plot of "Major League" in real life. 😢
It totally is! I've got to rewatch that.
You still hear "Raaaaaiders" calls in Oakland to this day!
😢
Apparently raiders fans don’t even yell it in Vegas. I find it just as obnoxious as the next non-raider fan but to no longer hear echos of “raaaaaaaaiderrrrrrrsss” is a damn shame. They really lost the culture with the move. Fuck John Fisher fr
@@bishopalexander6617 couldn't agree more. There was a culture. I had season tickets in the Black Hole from 1995 until they left. And not 30+ rows back, I mean IN THE BLACK HOLE. I was 6 rows from the field. In fact, in 1997, people kept talking about this infamous "Black Hole" and I had no idea what they were talking about. Come to find out, that's where I was sitting. Amazing times. Probably the best when it comes to sports related. I eventually went on to work for the team. 😉
I’m A’s fan who saw Mickey Mantle play at the Coliseum as a kid. My parents first date was an A’s game at Shibe in 48. I haven’t been to the Coliseum since 95 cause I’ve lived 3000 miles away. But I’m going back for the homestand the first week of May to say goodbye to the Coliseum the place I grew up in and consider home. Thanks for taking me to one of my favorite places on earth.
Stories like yours are tough to hear. I've only been going to games for a few years, but it's hard not to grow attached to the place. I'm glad you get to make one last trip before the A's move. Hope you enjoy!
That's why I'm goimg to miss this place and miss this stadium they are making such a horrible mistake
@@Davidjon1946 It was always my dream that the Coliseum would be venerated one day as much as Fenway or Wigrily
god damn are u like 100 then? if u saw mickey play 😭
@@brianmccarthy1029 if theyd torn down that ugly grandstand in centre field it would be so much better
Last summer me and my cousin would just go to random A's games because they were so cheap. All tickets were like $10-$15 and I remember the food costing more than the seats. It was actually nice despite the stadium being deserted. Weirdest experience at a stadium
I agree! The Coli is... different. But a great time for not a ton of money. Food and Beers are not cheap though! I almost always pay more for food than tickets.
Oakland Coliseum is the only MLB stadium I've ever been to where I got yelled at by a staff member for sitting in a significantly worse seat than my ticketed one.
It's the only place I've been yelled at for standing!
I wonder if it has something to do with janitorial services- they probably don’t clean the sections that no one has a ticket for
John Fisher did to the A's what Eddie Lampert did to Sears: Took a valuable and popular brand and drove it into the ground.
As a Mariners fan, it's sad to see what happened to the A's. Yes, the M's will pad their record against the A's this year, but it's just sad, man.
Perfect analogy! The only difference I see is that Fisher did it intentionally. Or maybe he is just as incompetent as Lampert. Who knows!
Growing up I loved our little rivalry. Ichiro was always a joy to watch.
the writing and editing in this video is fantastic. great video
Thank you!
Yup
I was in Oakland on work-related visit in August 2022, getting around on the BART. When the train pulled up by the Coliseum, I saw how run down and sad the stadium appeared. I grew up in DC in the 60s/70s, and we had the hapless Washington Senators play at RFK Stadium. This video reminds me of the Senators' final seasons in DC, near-empty stands, closed concessions, and a team that seemed to have no hope.
It is really tough to see, but you're right. This isn't the first time we've seen this story.
I've seen a few of your videos before this one and really enjoy you're filmmaking style. Also, really great titles and thumbnails! Keep up the good work, Adam.
Thank you! That's an incredible compliment coming from you! Nothing stresses me out more than titles and thumbnails. Not sure if you feel this way, but even when it turns out well, I wish they were better.
@@AdamDoesNotExist Yes, I think that's normal to go back and "cringe" at your past work. Some people like to say it's a sign that you're progressing as a creator, so you could take that to heart. Another good thing to remember - your thumbnails and titles though ironically are the one things about your videos that can change long after the video is done!
@@worldofnuance Great points, thanks again!
this is a great video. love the trail of wire and overall explore vibe. excited to see more from you
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it!
Excellent video. Loved it man. Greetings from Toronto, Ontario
Thank you!!
Awesome video my man. Fellow yanks fan here, would love to see you tour all the stadiums! I’ll miss the Oakland As!
Thank you! I've thought about doing more of that, but living in Oakland certainly makes it easer to do A's games.
I live in East Bay, get to a few A’s games each year. Love the old beater stadium, it’s so bad, it’s actually good. Sad to see the team go, even if they aspire to be awful.
I agree wholeheartedly. The stadium is old, they're intentionally tanking the team, but games are still fun!
Great video ! Greetings from Tennessee and a Yankees fan for life. Sad to see the stadium situation in Oakland. Mt. Davis is the worst.
Cheers to a fellow fan! glad you liked it!
As someone that lives in SF, I still try to go to Oakland games as much as possible. Always a blast with the fans.
Totally different than Giants games!
I have to go catch a string of games this year. I’m gonna regret it if I don’t. I grew up going to A’s games couple times a year with my pops. You captured what it’s like to see a game so well.
Just took a trip and caught a couple giants games against the padres. Watching this made we wish I’d had gone to Oakland instead. Completely forgot about the troths 🤣
Good video dude.
I'm flying down from Canada in September to experience this myself. Thanks for the content!
great video - need more As game as the season goes on please
Thank you! I've got at least two more planned.
HEY, Wrigley still has the pee trough! lol
Hahaha. Of course it does. I should have known!
In the upper deck restrooms, they have pee troughs that face each other. Weirdest men’s room I think I’ve seen in a stadium. 😂😀
@@chiroguy98 No way! That's incredible!!
Some traditions never die. More pee to ya 😂
@@AdamDoesNotExist Just think of it as more of a bath tub. Then if you ever see what a bunch of high school kids do at their adult parties when their parents are gone for the weekend they will literally use the bath tub for a three person urinal. (No I never went to those and have only seen the aftermath of them)
Nice video! Love the editing style
Thank you! Glad to hear it!!
Adam, dude, you should put "Oakland A's" in your title. It's the hottest topic nationally, right now! I will share this on some FB pages, who need to see this. RIP Oakland A's. BTW, as a Sacramento area resident, and A's fan, I am really, really conflicted about them moving here. 🤔
I updated it! That would be incredibly generous. Honestly the more videos I make, the worse I feel like I am at titles and thumbnails. I really struggled with this one.
I can imagine that's a strange feeling, having the A's in your own back yard now!
@@AdamDoesNotExist Yeah, again, it's aiding and abetting Fisher by putting money in his pocket. But, on the flip side, it's going to be huge for the Sacramento economy, and with the caveat that IF Vegas fails, Sacramento could be their permanent home. Maybe. I watch ALL content about the A's, for now. I am going to post on "Oakland A's Fans for Life" on FB, but, of course FB does not play nicely with YT, so we will see.
@@SippyCupAdventures It certainly feels like the SAC officials have been the smartest through this whole process!
Who cares... Oakland is a woke, crime ridden, dung hole. Business owners and citizens of Oakland, CA have been abused by Oakland's goverment and all businesses have the right to move and relocate their businesses. Stop your draconian whining....
@@AdamDoesNotExist Holy 💩, look at this video take OFF! Your #1 video now. This A's shit is gold, and I am so happy to see this, as the word gets spread nationally, how sad this whole situation has become. I am enjoying the "circus," I am not going to lie, as I want to see the A's fail, and Fisher get sunk. With that said, the A's themselves, are putting a wrench in this whole process, by actually being competitive on the field! 🤨
Growing up in St. Louis, it's weird to see a baseball stadium that empty...
I’m an A’s fan who lives in Oakland. It’s so crazy because I remember the stadium used to have tons of people who would go on a daily basis. I am really hoping everything falls through for Fisher, and the A’s stay in Oakland. I’ll be going to every single game I can this season. It’s so heartbreaking because MLB Baseball was my first love to the Sports world. There are tons of people here in Oakland and the East Bay who wants to keep going to A’s games but doesn’t want to support this ownership anymore. MLB needs to do the right thing
I hope everything falls through as well. But I'm not optimistic. But it anyone can mess this up, it's Fisher.
I’m just getting into baseball. Found a love within mlb the show now I know where to watch some nice cheap games! Thanks
You bet!
Great video thanks from a brand new sub 🎉
Thanks! Glad to have you here!!
sick a nice concise video. thank you for not making this 37 minutes like most content creators would do
Glad you enjoyed it! I like watching fast paced energetic videos so I try to make my own that way!
Was fortunate enough to be in the San Fran/Oakland area last April for work and was able to catch an A’s game. While it’s a shame where things are at with the franchise I’m still insanely thankful I was able to see the stadium and take in some of the history from my childhood.
It's still a great time!
Makes complete sense, I always ride the subway to Yankee games and that thought came to mind watching u walk to the A's game
It's a bit different than going to Yankees games, but it's still a fun time
As a royals fan I honestly feel bad for Oakland they played worse than us last season and there leaving Oakland so we’ll see what happens next if it gets better or worse
Feels like yesterday the Royals were winning the world series. They're another team that belongs right where they are!
It is crazy that the ushers take their job seriously. Not being acceptable to move closer when the stadium is less than 10% capacity is astonishing. I’ve been asked to sit down with not a single soul behind me. I’m talking 25 rows.
This one baffles me too. A's games are the only sporting event on earth where I've been told to sit down. I've been told to sit down in the back row of the section. How does that make sense!?!?!
This a genuinely great video
Thanks friend!
Wow. This reminds of going to games in the waning years of milwaukee county stadium. Especially in mid- late September when it was often cold, windy and drizzling. Brewers would often be battling for last place and weeknight games were averaging 5-7k attendance. But hey $5 bleachers on thursday and being broke, bored teens, it was still a good time
Exactly! It's still a good time. It was actually cold and drizzzling for the first part of this game too.
Yup. I remember the Stick in the 70s. Under 2000 wasn't uncommon. $1.50 buds.
dude...funny and informative ....solid writing/editing.
Thank you!!
It's truly sad what this owner has done to our once great franchise. An absolute joke! Will definitely not support them in any way once they leave. And Manfred should be ashamed of himself for letting this happen.
The fan that found the paper was will macneil. He goes to every home game and is known as right field will. Awesome dude if you wanna know more bout the coli or a's. Youll see em out in right field bleachers section 149
If there’s ever an award for world champion social misfit, he’s your guy.
A true hero. I don't know him personally, but that is his twitter in the screenshot. I'm so glad he shared that. It's nice to have a bit more confirmation of what's really going on.
Expecting to hear Bruce Springsteen sing "Glory Days". I am old enough to remember when the A's were successful. But I also remember the Oakland Raiders.
That would have been the perfect music choice! Do you remember the Seals?
Great video. What’s up with the view count? Anyway, the most expensive part of going to an A’s game seems to be the catalytic converter you’ll have to buy after the game
The view count reflects the amount of interest in the A's. That's why they're leaving.
All the more reason to take public transit! And you got here early!!
I went to a pre-season fan fest there one year in the 80s. Decided to park outside to avoid paying. Got my battery stolen.
Lifelong As fan and former season ticket holder here - great video - I said my goodbyes to the team and stadium last season - everything that’s happening is so freaking depressing - SUBBED!
Thank you! It is a real bummer, but great to see the support from MLB fans around the country.
The tradition we have makes me so angry to move to a desert with no true fans probably will change and ruin the colors and uniforms
@@Davidjon1946 i agree totally!
In the shot of the footbridge at 0:03 if you look all the way to the right and zoom in, you’ll see a blue W and a W on top and C on bottom. That’s my job! Cool to spot in a video
That's awesome!
Man I remember going to A's games on Tuesdays and getting dollar hot dogs and enjoying the vibes this looks like a graveyard lol I live in Vegas now nice to know they are going to be here in a few years!
They have some dollar hot dog games this year!
The John Fisher baseball team
Sure feels that way!
Great video. Sad to see a historic franchise in such sorry shape. Surprised mlb lets this embarrassment continue.
Thank you!
damnnn this video is great, super underrated
Glad you think so!
I've lived in the Bay Area my entire life save for college, been to many an A's game for the good vibes at the worst stadium in sports. The A's deserve better. As another commenter said, we're seeing the movie Major League in real life.
It's so similar!
I was such a huge A's fan as a kid. One of the best days of my childhood was at the Coliseum in the 80s 😢
So many stories like yours. Hopefully the memory is still a fond one!
Damn shame. I was 10 yrs old in '69 and the Raiders were in the midst of being the Great Raiders and The A's were just coming to be known as THE A's w/ outlandish Uni's/Players/Owner and NICKNAMES.
Soon there will be no Oakland NFL/MLB Team and for those fans my heart goes out to you.
Even though I'm a New Yorker and Yankees/Giants fan, I'll always have great memories of those Oakland teams and how great they were.
The Coliseum was always too big imo. I went back in the Jose Canseco days and the place was packed. But even then it felt empty for some weird reason. I think it’s just way too expansive.
Totally. It's the biggest MLB stadium by a pretty wide margin.
It is a relic of the past where NFL teams and MLB teams shared stadiums. I’ve on other videos that arenas, and stadiums without tenants make more money because they can have more concerts and events without having to work around a schedule.
Awesome video!
Thanks!
Imagine taking a job so serious that you're basically out of a job the next day
How about that timing..
Extremely underrated 🔥🔥
Thank you! 🤘
I grew up going to games here, and seeing what fisher has done to this team throughout them has made me so angry, this place when full is the most electric and passionate place to watch a sports game, I was there in 2019 when they broke the attendance record, it’s honestly so sad seeing our team stolen from us by this asshole who doesn’t give a shit about baseball, I wish you could’ve seen this place when it was packed because man it’s truly something special. Thank you for this video we need the world to know, fisher is the problem, always has been and always will be
I was at the first reverse boycott, and you're right. That was probably the coolest baseball atmosphere I've been in. And I've been in many.
Daytona International Speedway has metal troughs in all the inside the track bathrooms too 😂
Great video, but it’s a terrible stadium mixed with a poorly run city.
Thank you! And yes, it sure is.
Sad to see this. Interesting to think that 4 major teams (A's, Raiders, Warriors, and Golden Seals) played at the complex at one point. Wish this story had a better ending. Surreal to see an empty stadium 😔
On a personal note, the video was well done and captured a lot 👍
Thank you! People forget the Seals but you're right. Oakland has lost a lot of sports teams.
This was a great video essay. If you never said you werent a fan of the team then I would swear that you are a huge fan of this team.
I was born a Yankees fan, but it's hard not to become a bit of an A's fan through this whole thing!
My favorite part is the cobwebs in the seats in the upper deck. They aren't even pretending that people are going to sit up there.
People wander up there every game, but you're right, no one stays long.
Have to correct one thing, Miami and the white Sox are worse
I feel your pain. I grew up in the Midwest and I’m a huge Cubs fan, but I’ve lived in Central Florida for the last 26 years. So the Trop in St. Pete is my only realistic place to see MLB games. And I suppose it’s better than if I lived in say Montana or the Dakotas, and had no option at all for a pro ballpark. But…it’s pretty bad just the same. Always listed with the Coliseum as the two worst. I get to a few games there a year (to see other teams play, not the Rays) and the place is always pretty empty. Even when the Rays are doing well. Their fans frankly don’t even deserve the team. One game I was at, the Rays were up several runs by the 7th. A few Rays fans were shouting “Hurry up! We want to go home!” Can you imagine that at some other clubs’ parks?? I’d stay at Wrigley all day if I could. Or even my secondary AL teams’ parks. Many of the Trop’s food stands are typically closed up too when I’ve been there, and certain whole sections for food on upper levels look like ghost towns or abandoned malls. The drive getting there is THE biggest pain in the ass too. The ONLY good thing I can say of it, is with the hot, humid, rainy weather in Florida in the summer months, it is nice to have a roof over your head and slightly cooler conditions to sit in. I don’t even know if a new ballpark, like it looks like will happen now, will solve it either, given some of the fans lackluster attitudes about their own team. As a passionate baseball fan, it’s beyond me. Oh, as those troughs go, I can remember when Wrigley had those. 😂 And they were double that size and stainless steel. They looked like feed bins for cattle. Pretty disgusting. But it used to just be part of the grittiness of that park, and you knew it. They’re gone now, and personally I say good riddance. I think it’s gorgeous what they’ve done with that park the past 10 years. Gentrification? Hey, looks beautiful to me over what it was. Preserving the past, but looking to the future.
As someone who grew up in the east bay going to As games and raider games it makes me really sad to see the colosseum like this
It's a shame
Nice video guy ❤❤ do the Reds. I'll host you ;)
Thank you! If I make it out there I'll let you know!!
Could def see u at a half mil subs within a year
Thank you! I think that's a bit ambitious, but would be really cool.
One of the best tended fields in the majors. I live in Oakland and love going to the games.
Cheers! Maybe I'll see ya out there!
I had a group of friends who lived in Oakland, and they would go to games to cheer on the grounds crew! Seriously! They had signs and everything!
Just as a fan of the game this whole situation sucks. In a perfect world, everyone has huge, passionate fan bases, successful management, and at the very least can compete to some degree. This is one of the worst professional sports situations I can recall in my entire lifetime.
Same. It's horrible to watch
A's are leaving due to skyrocketing crime and a collapsing economy in Oakland...no owner would ever build a new stadium there...same reason the Raiders left.....no mystery here...
I always remember about 15 years ago. I went to an A’s game and it was kind of like the same way It is now… there was nobody ever in there. And then to top it off whenever I tried to get closer with better seats day straight up told me let me see your ticket and told me to go back to my seat. There was nobody in the stadium lol. I’m sure times have changed.
I don't understand why they're such sticklers about that. If they don't see you change seats they can't do much. But some of the ushers aren't super nice.
Football, basketball, now baseball.. it's much more of a reflection of the city
Don't forget Hockey
I remember the days of Charlie O . And the stadium would be packed. Guess those days are gone forever
It looks like the last game of the season will be packed. But sad to see there's an end coming.
great video
Thanks!
They should be in San Jose like the 49ers. I think the Giants blocked it
Fisher does not invest in free agents, player development, adequate training facilities, scouting, or a decent farm system. The lie is that he'll start doing that as soon as the team moves. They will be the worst team in baseball years after they move to Las Vegas, if Nevada doesn't get wise to the con and reject the move. There is zero interest in fielding a competitive team, and the Dodgers and Yankees of the world should be pissed that they have to share their profits, with a team that does less than the minimum work on the group project. Want to see the future: Marlins got a new stadium and it sits empty most of the year.
Well said!
Rough going when your attendance is low on opening day.
Went to a game back in September of ‘23 and had a blast. I personally enjoyed it more than the Giants’ game I attended earlier that week. Of course SF was a way nicer stadium, but the game lacked the atmosphere the Oakland had. There was something about the dilapidated stadium that made it fun. I feel bad for the fans, they didn’t ask for any of this.
The thing is, the bare concrete look could’ve worked. Look at the Rogers Centre. This just looks like brutalist hell.
A bit of work and it could be fine in Oakland, but.... that's obviously not happening.
You left out that the player who just *happened* to get demoted (and another who was benched) wore a "Last Dive Bar" wristband on opening day
Wristbandgate! I wanted this to be more about the stadium and what it's like going to the games. It's hard to ignore all the fisher stuff, but focusing on it too much just makes me sad.
Who in the hell would want to stay in Oakland.
2:41 "don't put your hand on the handrail"
Yeah, my bad!!
This was depressing. Makes me thankful Comerica Park is my home park
Went to the last opening day at Oakland Coliseum, lowest level lines were insane compared to the attendance. Great video though. Sac Athletics all the way
Thank you!
so sad..and the A's have the most passionate , loyal , and crazy fans (in a fun way) in baseball.
during my visit the roof was leaking water and they had to gather it in trash cans. at least i got a sweet black panther funko figure from the whole ordeal
used to go to A's games a lot in the 90s and 00s when i lived in SF and it was fucking great. the A's and the Raiders and the Warriors have all stabbed Oakland in the back, and i hope all of them go bankrupt. really sickening.
Tough to watch. That's for sure. Telling that you went to A's games when living in SF!
I've been to that S hole several times and each time it's a blast. Yes, it's a pile but the few fans are some of the best is baseball. I also sat in the front row behind the visitors dugout tunnel for $46, for a double header. Where else can you sit that close for 23 bucks a game? No Where.
Sometimes the dive bars are the most fun!
Phillies fan here. A lot of fans get upset about the prices of tickets and how much food and drinks are at citizen bank park, but I would take that over this any day. This is upsetting. I love baseball and going to Phillies games for the last 22 years have been one of the greatest things I get to experience. I feel bad for As fans. This is just disgusting.
You can’t blame the owner, the Warriors and Raiders left for a reason and it’s because the city of Oakland is ran terribly
The way I see it, it’s a match made in hell. Both the owner and the city seem to be bad for different reasons, leaving the fans to basically fend for themselves.
Toughs are also in Syracuse dome 😅prolly not for long though
I grew up in Syracuse! I heard they took them out of the dome already. Not true?
I'm kind of sad that I won't get a chance to see it before it goes. I grew up in Baltimore, and that stadium reminds me of Memorial Stadium. The embarrassment of an owner who constantly threatens to move the team even reminds me of the old Baltimore Colts. I feel sorry for the kids who will soon not have any pro team in their city at all. Seems like they had 3 just yesterday
blame the city!
Even playing MLB The Show, getting drafted by the A's comes with a dread I didn't know from any video game.
Hahaha
No way I went to this game, Im a red sox fan btw, im the guy in the gray shirt at 5:13 trying to find better seats than what we bought for like $15
That's amazing! I hope you didn't get yelled at by any of the staff.
@@AdamDoesNotExist nah we got kicked out after like 2 batters 💀
I honestly see a similar fate to what the Expos got happening to the A's.
Yeah, feels like it's a tale as old as for profit sports teams I'm afraid.
Might as well change the name.
Man get this man 500k subs
Cheers brother!
Even back in the 80s, the Coliseum staff had very little issue of fans moving to whatever seat they wanted that was open. That was a really cool place back then, it's too bad Oakland went to absolute shit and the franchise with it.
Cant believe they kick u outnof better seats that are empty i attend blue jays games and never pay more than 20bucks for a ticket then move down to front' ish row no one bats and eye the onpy place u cant go is directly behing the plate
It's a different world out here
Wouldn’t it be funny if somehow the A’s end up making the playoffs in their last year at the Colleseum
That would be amazing!
The Stick in the 70s was even worse. Went to a couple of games when the attendance was below 2000. Fortunately they had a string of owners who actually cared, not to mention are in a city that had not gone to hell in a handbasket and didn't fight the team tooth and nail at every turn. Say all you want about Fisher, but when you lose the A's... AND the Raiders... AND the Warriors... then maybe the location has something to do with it.
And the Seals!
I gotta make it out here before they shut this place down
If you can, looks like the last game in the Coli is going to be great. 9/26
i feel like you could fit that amount of spectators to some finland's baseball (pesäpallo) arenas
Wow. This looks like the most interesting sport I've never heard of!
I remember going to games there 30 years ago and thinking even then the place was a dump
Lol, peeing in a trough 20 times during a cup race at Talladega superspeedway is a privilege 😊
Hahaha. I believe they still have them at Bristol in some places too
Are there any hotels near the stadium?
Surprisingly Acrisure Stadium previously AKA Heinz Field where the Pittsburgh Steelers play, have piss troughs too hahah
They're more common than I thought!
Not an A’s fan, but might catch a game just to experience the coliseum one last time.
You should!
