I love Amtrak.

Great video, I learned a lot. I too love Yosemite, always called it 'God's Disneyland", something for everyone.

21st century and you need a physical piece of paper and to pay with cash 🙄 You were smart to go Paia around midday as opposed to in the evening when the traffic is backed up for miles So the bus system just says FU to NW Maui? TBH never been to that part of the island but there are roads there 🤷🏾‍♂

This is so funny, I literally plan months ago. To take the Amtrak to Yosemite 🤣🤣

At this time unfortunately Amtrack is only good for short rides. I took the train from San Luis Obispo to Salinas and it was a train ride with beautiful valley views and was not too long of travel (3hrs 1/2) works out that both train stations are near downtown. I’ve also taken train rides from Sacramento to San Diego and that was brutal!

That’s weird to me that the path is paved. Didn’t see that years ago when I went. Loving this video.

Enjoyed the trip that I most likely will never come within 600 miles of. And your comment section is most enjoyable. I don’t think most realize how strange it is whenever nightfalls and there’s no other humans around. I grew up alone, and still am, but I worked and house sat on 200 acres of flatland, and once the sun had set, it was like I the last human on earth, just a mere speck on the planet.

Kudos to you making this video Adam! I live in Sonora, which is called the Gateway to Yosemite (Shared by Groveland). Even though we are only about an hour and 45 mins from Yosemite, I haven't been to there in years. I'm almost 70 now, and I used to climb in the Valley in the 70s right along with the big greats back then, Royal Robbins, Warren Harding, Yvon Chouinard. We have a YARTS here as it is based here, and now I think I want to go see the Valley again before I get too old. I think it's the perfect answer to getting to the Valley without driving. Watching this made me very nostalgic. I used to camp alone in Camp 4, even after I stopped climbing, just to get away from the spouse, kids and job back in the 80s. When we climbed we often slept up in the trees in Foresta, which sadly has all burnt down now. Thanks for the lovely video of a place I spent a lot of time in during my youth.

Thanks for sharing, I have been trying to figure out more car-free trips from Sacramento since they are much more of an adventure. I’ll have to add this to the list

I have no intention of watching this video. Sitting in a train as it passes Yosemite is a poor excuse for not strapping on a backpack & equipment & seeing the real Yosemite. TWO THUMBS DOWN.

Not a fan of Maui been there once rented a car did the road to Hana didn’t realize there was a bus system there. However, I go to Honolulu often been a dozen times and my last six trips I’ve never rented a car, just the local bus system.

I did this same trip about 30 years ago, BART to Amtrak, then the Yosemite connector bus from Merced. I had a wonderful time and your video brought up so many pleasant memories. Once I arrived there, I wasn't as ambitious as you hiking into the mountains overnight. I rented a tent cabin at Camp Curry for two nights. And rented a bicycle to explore the valley during the day. There is a great reason Amtrak doesn't go to SF: neither the Golden Gate bridge nor the Bay Bridge have train tracks. So you would have to end the Coast Starlight in SF, rather than having it continue north to Seattle. Also, why would anyone go from the East Bay to SF to take Amtrak? Surely you would do a web search in the morning before leaving yes?

Huh, because the Stonestown mall on the west side has HELLA people. Plus they just opened an arcade. Maybe because it's next to SFSU?

Island looks lovely. Weather is good all the time-- did you see any bicycles, electric scooters, anything that didn't require a driver's license? It seems like a no-brainer. But maybe the roads are too narrow and dangerous.

going through those valleys on the way to dublin/ pleasanton isn’t a coastline or crazy mountain view line but man it sure does take me back to being a kid riding in the back of my grandpas/ parents cars. love the vids man. keep it up

This was an interesting video, but I'm disappointed you didn't "pick a side" - that is to say, share your honest opinion. It makes me wonder how the information you provided is biased and what was left out, if anything. I don't believe any of us are neutral, and seeing the comments you're responding to makes it pretty clear which side you're on so I'm very confused why you chose to keep it to yourself . I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful by saying this. You're clearly super talented and dedicated to this and I appreciate the informative video, but I'll be blunt, my gut reaction is that refusing to share your opinion is either done to maintain a "neutral" position to gain/keep a larger audience or it's done intentionally to obfuscate the true argument being made by it's creator. Is there a more noble reason I'm missing or am I confused on the benefits to the information provided by pretending it comes from a neutral source?

When I went to Maui in 2018, I took the bus and walked most places (I don’t drive). It works for some things, definitely not all. It is a good way to meet locals and see the island.

Oahu would be an interesting one. We have a weird relationship with public transit here. Everybody hates it and loves it at the same time and despite all the criticism it has really high ridership.

I live 3 hrs from Yosemite and I always camp there for 2-3 nights from last minute cancellations. Good for you for making that trek. My ass could never 😆

you saying that you been wanting to do that train ride for 7 years but are just now doing that reminds me of me with hiking. for years i said was gonna hike all over the sierra nevada mountains but yet have only done day hikes 😂 but seeing you complete your goal is really motivating me to finally do mines! thanks for that!

I used to take Amtrak often in college. The trains are lovely. I had two issues. 1) brought a bike. I had done this before and knew which car to go to. It was full, conductor shooed me away to another cart, train left without me. 2) the power outlets have something wrong with them and they might shock you. I had my laptop plugged into the outlet, my arm rested on my laptop and grazed the metal portion of the train wall, zap! It wasn’t bad, I ended up using it as a constant relaxing buzz.
