  • The Oakland Athletics shocked the baseball world when they announced they'd be moving to a minor league stadium. There are a lot of issues with this, sure. But what's it really like to see a game in the Major League Baseball's newest and smallest stadium? And what's all the controversy surrounding this decisions.

    Sacramento resident here. From what I’ve seen/heard. Everyone in Sac is excited for an MLB team to come here. They are also looking at it as a “tryout” to hopefully either steal the A’s from Vegas or get an expansion team. Good takes. But 90 degrees and dry with frequent delta breezes coming off the Sacto River literally right next to the ballpark is not more heinous than 90 degrees and 50,000% humidity in Houston, Dallas, Philly, Pittsburgh, KC, Baltimore, DC, Atlanta, NYC, Boston etc. Delta breezes mean there will be some Summer nights in Sacto that resemble the frozen tundra of Candlestick Park in July.

    • @SlipKid1975
      @SlipKid1975 26 дней назад +13

      It doesn’t sound like you’ve ever been to Sacramento in the summer because if you had, you’d know that it only slightly cools down at night during one of the cities heat waves, with daytime temperatures hitting 105 degrees and above with no evening delta breeze in sight. Also most of the seats in the lower section are directly in the sun so you will roast like a pig on a Hawaiian barbecue.

    • @takiharo
      @takiharo 26 дней назад +3

      @@SlipKid1975 Hey, at least it's not Redding. That would be worse than Phoenix and almost as bad as Houston or Arlington. The only thing I can figure is that they take the temperature readings at the water treatment plant since it's always atleast 2 degrees warmer than what the weather app says.

    • @jerkytoo8184
      @jerkytoo8184 25 дней назад +1

      I've attended a couple of day games at this park, sitting on the "Homerun Hill" in the outfield. During the summer with 105 degree heat, it's no picnic. Maybe I'm a wimp, but I've never lasted a full day game with that heat.
      Even during the first few innings of a night game during the summer you're still getting direct sun on the first base side. Not very comfortable.
      Once the sun sets, the delta breeze usually kicks in, but it's always the case.

Family fun, cheap food and beer, and intimate viewing of some good baseball. However, I cannot imagine how chaotic and awful it will be when the A's take over. I worked in the parking lot at Rally Field in 2019; the last year it was called by that name (and the year the River Cats won the Minor League World Series!). The stadium is immaculate and the River Cat organization treats the fans and their employees very well. Best non-career job I ever had! A lot of fun. When it was owned by the Savage family, the pay and perks couldn’t be beat. Not sure about now.
    Over 1 summer working in the parking lot I experienced maybe 3 days where the heat was so bad, standing in the sun was unbearable. We used canopies on those days. Most day games you could count on the delta breeze to cool things down mid- afternoon…at least convinced you of that…but always making it tolerable. The sun was the devil. Night games were the best time to watch a game! Maybe schedule all night games to beat the heat?
    One of the old timers once told me that when they built the stadium back in the late 90’s, they built the stadium foundation to allow for an additional deck(s) to be built should stadium expansion be necessary in the future. Word was that the Sac area and the Savage family always had an outside hope of attracting a major league team to Sacramento someday and wanted that option. Was never able to verify that story but the same guy told me……
    The story about the War of the Stadiums between the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento trying to attract the Vancouver Canadians to Sacramento back in the mid-late 90’s. Within miles of each other, both cities began constructing stadiums to attract the team. Eventually budget constraints caused Sac Town to stop building the baseball stadium-this later became the site of Arco Arena north of Sac in Natomas; another failed sports venture. This I personally confirmed. If you Google Map the Arco or Sleep Train Arena in Sac, you can still see the columns and foundation to the unfinished River Cat stadium. The playing field is now a pond. Thankfully, it looks like they finally knocked down that hideous Sleep Train arena.

      I have the same question, really, and it makes me think the A's aren't 100% committed to Vegas. If they were, why not even consider moving to LV, displacing the Aviators, and initiating a media deal in Southern NV. Because the chances of the A’s actually moving to Vegas are extremely slim. If they move there before a stadium is built, they’re going to get stranded out there with no stadium. Teams always get a boost in a new stadium. That boost won't last long if they're no good, but teams seem to rise to the occasion and all of a sudden start contending. Plus the value of the team skyrockets due to leaving Oakland, which leaves more money for players, which in turn means better players. In theory. Now if the A's can just ditch the fraudulent, losing strategy called "moneyball" they might actually be something someday. Moneyball was the worst thing that ever happened to the A's, and what they're going through is a direct result of it.
